It was an emotional moment for Kunal Kapoor aka Yudi in Left Right Left. The actor was moved to tears when he was asked to enact a suicide sequence where he was supposed to shoot himself. Ironically, Kunal's mother had committed suicide when the actor was only nine years old.

Recalls Kunal, "I was shooting with Rajeev Khandelwal. It was a terrible moment for me when the director asked me to give the shot. It was like life holding a mirror before me, reminding me of my tragic past. I felt scared and sad at the same time, but both Rajeev and my director Anshuman were very supportive. After finishing the scene, I cried for good half-an-hour in the green room."

Says director Anshuman Singh, "Kunal was reluctant to do the scene and I had to motivate him before he finally agreed. It was a difficult scene as well."

Hitting the high road
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 3, 2007

off we go! Kunal Kapoor with Sue Joseph before leaving for Goa
Early on Friday morning Kunal Kapoor took off for Goa with friends for a break including his girlfriend and Remix co-star Sue Joseph.

The actor, who is presently seen as Yudi in Left Right Left is making the most of the break in shooting.

Due to the cricket World Cup, Left Right Left is taking a season's break as SAB becomes a cricket-only channel.

"I hit the road early on Friday morning and I have no clue for how many days I will be away — anything from five to 15 days. Or better still, till the money lasts," he says while taking a break in Chiplun last night.

Some of my Left Right Left co-stars like Aparna Tilak, Shveta Salve and Arjun Bijlani will also be coming to Goa over the weekend, so there is lots of company."

High road

A keen bike enthusiast, he says this is the first time since Left Right Left went on air that he is taking a break.

"During the Remix days, I once took off for Goa. I just decided to travel one afternoon and within hours, I was on the road on my Hero Honda. It was extremely unplanned and without much money.

I lived on the roads there! At least this time there are friends and adequate money."

Says Kunal, "I have known Sue for over two years ever since our Remix days. She played the character of MP in Remix. She is studying through correpondence, so she could also come along with us."

Interestingly, Kunal was working in a call centre for more than a year before he took up acting.

"There were certain personal reasons also why I took up a role in Remix which was my television debut," he says.

How it began

As a kid, he used to loiter around Mahesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films office. "I was in class seven then and one day Bhattsaab told me, show me how angry you can get.

He then told me to get in touch with Shrishti Arya for a film called Angaarey which she and her brother Goldie Behl were producing and Bhatt saab was directing.

I was supposed to play the younger role of Akshay Kumar. But because of my height, I couldn't do it. Years later when Shrishti was casting for Remix, I got in touch with her again. That's how I began acting."

After this Goa trip, Kunal has plans to go for an all-India tour on his newly-bought Royal Enfield bike. "In Mumbai, there are too many restrictions and no time, with the bike at least on the highway you can break free."

'I know how to flirt!'

... says Vikas Manektala, as BT corners him over the special friendship he shares with his co-star Priyanka Bassi

DEEPALI DHINGRA

Newcomers are often accused of showing high handedness in the glam industry and Vikas Manektala aka Hooda of SAB's Left Right Left is the latest to be accused of having an attitude problem. Quiz him about this and he says, "Everybody reacts differently to different situations. I used to be an introvert and it still takes time for me to open up but people grow with each misunderstanding." So is he comfortable sharing screen space with seniors like Rajeev Khandelwal and Shveta Salve? "Touchwood, there have been no ego clashes on the sets and I feel blessed to be working with such a wonderful unit. Rajeev is a good friend and we hang out together after shooting also. I admit that
jahan kuch bartan hote hain wahan aawaz bhi hoti hai. But these little misunderstandings help a relationship grow," he adds.
Speaking of relationships, sources on the sets claim that Vikas is a little too fond of his co-star Priyanka Bassi. But Vikas refutes the rumours of him seeing Priyanka. "We're just very good friends," he says and adds that he was seeing somebody but it didn't work out. "I'm waiting for some beautiful angel to walk by me now," he smiles. Vikas' character Hooda in the show is shown to be a flirt. Is he like that in real life too? "No, I'm not, but I do know how to flirt," he adds with a laugh.
Vikas is all set to watch the World Cup, now that his show is taking a season break. "The show's doing well and we all have been working so hard. It's feels good to take a break," says the lad from Delhi, who's pretty happy with the way his character 'Hooda' has shaped up in the show. "It's very encouraging to know that people appreciate your work," he says. Future plans? "Well, at the moment I'm taking it slow. I've received lots of offers, including films but I'm taking my time to decide. After all, slow and steady win the race, don't they?" he smiles.

With water balloons and colour being thrown on random strangers (especially women), Holi doesn't always work out well for all of us. We asked women from the small screen what their worst incident during the festival colours has been. A few of them have admitted to actually doing some damage themselves.

Shveta Salve
I think everybody, especially girls; have these incidents happen to them. When I was in school I was traveling by rickshaw and I was hit by a nasty water balloon that had rocks in it. There was also a time in college where I was sitting at a window seat on the bus and someone threw a balloon at me. Both times I got hurt really bad. I'm not fond of Holi unless I'm celebrating with family and friends. It's become really bad and even traveling or walking the streets during that time is dangerous.

Vikas Manaktala a.k.a Huda of Left Right Left is being touted as the latest hunk to hit the small screen. His love triangle which involves gorgeous cadet, Priyanka Bassi and Rajeev Khandelwal has also grabbed quite a few eyeballs. Over to Vikas for more.

Q There is a very interesting love triangle involving you, Rajeev Khandelwal and Priyanka Bassi in LRL. Will she fall for you or for Captain Rajveer?
Yes, there is a love triangle involving the three of us, but I too don't know whether she will fall for me or not. I leave this to our creative team. Till now no one has been able to say 'no' to Huda, but Naina is the only one to reject him. That is actually the reason why Huda is attracted to her (laughs). We'll have to wait and see what happens as the story goes on.

Q So you agree that being part of this intriguing love story has increased the audience's interest in you…
Yes, I am very happy about it. I feel encouraged and it feels very nice. I feel that my hard work paid off.

Q How do you and Priyanka get along offscreen?
Oh, very good. Priyanka is a great girl. We pull each other's legs and basically have lots of fun.

Q Had you ever thought of playing the role of Captain Rajveer?
I feel that each role has its own identity. so I can't play his role nor can he play mine. Rajeev (Khandelwal) is a very good actor and a nice and friendly person too.

Q And how are things with your other co-actors?
Onscreen, we are all playing different characters. but offscreen, we enjoy a lot whenever we get the time. We just hangout, go bowling and party quite a bit.

Q This role seems to have been a great way to kickstart your career...
Yes. I had got many other offers too, but this story and script appealed to me so much that I lapped it up. I am really satisfied as an actor right now, as this character allows me to explore both positive and negative shades. As of now, it is going really good. I am enjoying every bit of it.

Q How is Vikas in real life?
I was an introvert before, but now I have changed and have become an extrovert. I am friendly and I love to make new friends. Apart from this, I love kick-boxing and singing. dancing is my passion. I also love doing stunts onscreen.

Q What are your plans when Left Right Left goes off air owing to the World Cup?
For starters, i want to visit my parents in Delhi. I also plan to hang out with friends and catch up on old times. And when the show will be on air again I will surely entertain the audience more.

Q Any new project?
No, nothing as of now. I am not so keen on doing television serials as I am getting offers for films too. I am waiting for some good roles in films.

Hooda the fightercock

By now it's old hat that Vikas Manektala aka Hooda of Left Right Left has a huge attitude and doesn't miss any opportunity to throw his weight around.

According to the grapevine, Vikas picks up a fight with everyone from the spot boy to the dress designer, including his co-stars. Recently, when they were shooting a scene where Dr.Shalini (Aparna Tilak) turns into a crystal gazer and predicts the future of the cadets and others, Vikas refused to shoot. Neither did he leave the sets but sat outside saying unless and until his payment was made, he will not shoot.

Of course, not that this bothered the director who went ahead with the scene without Vikas, although he is one of the main characters in the serial.

Reports have been filtering in regarding his high-handed behaviour with everyone except Priyanka, Naina in the serial, for whom he has a soft corner. It is believed that they are seeing each other.

The serial deals with men in uniform, training cadets for military enrolment and is quite a hit on SAB TV, with actors like Puneet Issar, Rajeev Khandelwal, Shveta Salve, Aparna Tilak and Priya Arya besides a lot of youngsters as new comers like Vikas Manektala, Kunal Kapoor, Priyanka Bassi and Ghazal Rai. Versatile actor Rajesh Khera had also essayed the role of a Major on the campus.

Rajeev Khandelwal talks about the rumours which stated that he and Ekta Kapoor had patched up recently, his holiday plans, how he isn't close to Priyanka Bassi and how close he is to Aamna Sharif.

Q Rumour has it that you have patched up with Ekta and are quite keen on working with her? Is it true?
I am keen on working with Balaji? No way. They might be keen on working with me. I have no issues against Ekta and Shobha Kapoor. But I don't connect with their shows. After quitting Kahiin To Hoga there has not been a single Balaji show that made me think I missed doing it. None of their shows have really turned me on. My concern is about good content. Let them make one good show and I will be the first person to call Ekta and Shobha and tell them that I want to be a part of it.

Q What's your definition of a good role?
It's a question that I have been asked a number of times and I think it's the most difficult one to answer. I have never had any particular role in mind and even today I can't think of any specific one. It all depends on the kind of roles being written. Many times you hear scripts but nothing excites you. You just don't feel like doing them. I would like to do roles that ignite a spark in me.

Q Aren't you an odd man out asking for the stars when they are not on offer?
I have always said I want to maintain my exclusivity. I don't want to burn my energy on doing any and every role that doesn't interest me. I didn't do much after leaving Kahiin To Hoga except Time Bomb for four months. This shows how particular I am about my roles.

Q How do you find your role in Left Right Left?
I am very happy with it. I have made a mark as Rajveer Singh Shekhawat. After Kahiin To Hoga this is my second major show and I am very happy that it's become a cult show, particularly amongst the youth.

Q Did your family's army background help you to play the role?
I had an edge because of my family's association with the armed forces. It helped me get my costumes and body language right. Of course the army I know of and understand is quite different from what's being portrayed in the serial.

Q Left Right Left is heading for a two-month break. What are you planning to do?
I am going to have a blast. The break is good for the show and everyone working in it. I will be going to Jaipur to meet my parents and will also travel a lot from Laddakh to Rishikesh. I love travelling and seeing new places. Besides that I will be hearing scripts too.

Q It is said that you have developed a soft corner for Priyanka Bassi. Comment.
It is said that there can't be smoke without fire. But the fact is there is no fire and yet people are seeing the smoke. I don't even know Priyanka's cell number and don't know where she stays either. I meet her only on the sets. In fact, we don't even speak much on the sets. All I can say is that she is a nice girl.

Q How's your friendship with Aamna Sharif going?
She is a dear friend and the frequency of our meetings has increased. She is there for me whenever I need her and vice versa.

Priya Arya joins Maahi Ve
By: Vickey Lalwani
January 2, 2006
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

Priya Arya
SabSony's first daily Maahi Ve launched on December 5, has a new character Jagiro, which will be played by Priya Arya.

"My character will be on the lines of Anupam Kher in Saudagar, trying to build bridges between the two warring families of Thakur Bikram Singh and Thakur Vir Singh," an excited Priya tells hitList.

Panju hi Panju

"Jagiro will be a typical Panju girl with two parandiyan (chotis), with a tone and accent to suit the character. I was dying to play a Panju since long. I am a Panju myself and what better, than to be just what you are," she adds.

Arya got Maahi Ve when the executive producer on the show Shahid gave her a call. "I know Shahid since the days of Sanjivani (where she played Sweety). I quite liked the role when he narrated it to me."

Double whammy

Arya will also be seen in Tigmanshu Dhulia's (Haasil, Charas) serial Ek Chabi Pados Mein (to be directed by Santosh Sivan's assistant Ajay Behl) which stars Varun Badola (who plays an international bank employee), Sanjay Mishra and Sulbha Deshpande.

"It's a Nukkad kind of story, dealing with everday problems faced by the residents of a colony." She will start shooting for this one from January 7.

Aur kya?

Arya has two films ready for release — Ek Se Bure Do (co-starring Natasha, Arshad Warsi, Rajpal Yadav) where she plays a comic NRI and Bhoot Uncle where she teams up with Shahzad Khan and Akhilendra Mishra against Jackie Shroff and the kids.

Arya, who began shooting for Maahi Ve at Russian Villa and Beach House (in Madh) and United Studio Six (Sakinaka), enters the show in the first week of January 2006.

Naacha aur kamaya

Year end, she was in Jalandhar, hosting a New Year's Eve night at Hotel Radisson, "Brought in the New Year with music, dance, and above all, money. I am on a high, looking ahead to 2006. That's the way, Maahi Ve," she signs off with a song.

What touches Vikas Manaktala' heart?

Actors sometime are amazed at the kind of popularity they enjoy and the kind of effect they can have on the audience. Vikas Manaktala aka Hooda of SAB's Left Right Left was left speechless recently when he read a mail from a fan in Oman. "She had written that her father had been feeling stressed out lately and after watching one episode of the show, she saw him smiling. It's these kind of responses that make you realise that your work has touched some people," says Vikas. As it's his first show, Vikas says that he finds this really encouraging. "At the end of the day when you're feeling dead after work, these kind of mails totally refresh me," he says with a smile.

JOB SATISFACTION: Vikas Manaktala
