Ranveer Singh is currently riding a massive box office high, but a recent controversy has placed him under intense scrutiny. Even as his latest release Dhurandhar: The Revenge storms past Rs 500 crore within just four days, the actor found himself addressing the Karnataka High Court over remarks that didn’t go down well with many.
What sparked the controversy
The issue traces back to Ranveer’s appearance at the 55th International Film Festival of India in Goa. While applauding Rishab Shetty for his performance in Kantara: Chapter 1, Ranveer recreated a moment from the film. During this, he referred to the revered Chamundi Devi as a “female ghost,” a phrase that quickly sparked backlash online.
For many devotees, the reference was deeply offensive, especially considering the cultural and spiritual weight the deity holds. In Kantara, the presence of the divine is central to the storytelling, with certain scenes rooted in local beliefs and traditions, making the portrayal sacred rather than symbolic.
Legal heat and court proceedings
As outrage grew, the matter moved beyond social media. A complaint led to legal action, and soon an FIR was registered against Ranveer under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to hurting religious sentiments.
During the hearing, Justice M Nagaprasanna made it clear that the comment was inappropriate. Represented by senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, Ranveer expressed regret before the court and agreed to submit a formal written apology. He also assured that he would personally visit the Chamundi temple in Mysuru as a mark of respect.
Ranveer’s team maintained that his words were misunderstood and that there was no intention to offend. However, the complainant argued that his earlier apology on social media lacked authenticity, as it appeared to have been issued by his team rather than the actor himself.
Balancing controversy and blockbuster success
Interestingly, this controversy unfolds at a time when Ranveer is enjoying one of the biggest successes of his career. Dhurandhar: The Revenge has opened to roaring numbers, quickly crossing the Rs 500 crore mark and dominating the box office.
While the legal proceedings are set to continue, with the next hearing scheduled in April, all eyes remain on how Ranveer navigates this moment. Between a public apology, a promised temple visit, and a film breaking records, the actor finds himself balancing both applause and accountability.
