Chits...I understand that the problem lies with RR. But my justification is if Sona being a mature adult couldn't understand Dev's ideology and could fall in Vicky's trap, how can we expect Golu to understand it. In Sona's case I could understand Dev. But in Golu's case, I feel like is Dev taking Golu for granted. And to top it all, I am fed up of seeing Dev going all around saying sorry to Sona, Golu & even Vicky. Seems like it's only Dev who is responsible for all the wrongdoings till now...Seriously? 😡

So, I have now made myself acquainted with all the posts that I had missed in the previous week's thread as well as this one...

Since, I am away for the past few days... Today, I would like to talk about stuff which is loosely based on our show, but more on my personal views regarding the various discussions that take place on this thread as well as on some interesting themes/subjects that are being touched in our show...

1. As usual, I have enjoyed all the posts but I guess, my favorite one was @Shaavi's post on Ishwari and the ensuing discussion just added more spice to an already sizzling subject...

Whenever someone writes a post on Ishwari and her motives or her psyche, it reminds me of the time when I used to read articles/stories on Voldemort's perspective during the events in Harry Potter series...

It always left me slightly dazed and in awe of the individuals, who had the courage to look past their actions and understand the inner mechanism which made him commit his deeds as well as transformed him from Tom Riddle into Lord Voldemort...

It is very easy to say that he did a crime because he is Voldemort but very difficult, what made him so comfortable with what he does...

The same scenario also applies to Ishwari... It is so easy for us to hate her because of her actions... But, kudos to @Shaavi and all the writers who tried to decipher someone, who goes by the name of Ishwari Dixit, for their courage...

This is one of the reasons that I am such a frequent visitor to this thread... This space is, for all intents and purposes, the place where I believe everyone can share and discuss their perspective... Without any kind of fear of getting bashed or facing undue criticism...

2. After watching Friday's episode, I can clearly say that we are seeing an incomplete picture and it would be unwise to jump into conclusions...

I am finding it quite interesting on how they are using Khatri as a plot device to reveal the fundamental problem in Dev and Sona's relationship... In one of my previous posts, I spoke about how both of them are currently walking on separate paths and until, they start walking on the same road, they will continue to face hurdles in the form of each other's interference and misunderstandings...

Trust, like morality is not absolute, but relative in nature... It is not given to someone by asking someone else whether they trust the former or not but, needs to be proven and earned through your actions...

It needs to be incrementally built and is a time-consuming task which cannot be rushed...

So, I am looking forward on the changes that will occur between the characters due to this track...

3. Durjoy Dutta's blog was an unexpected but a pleasant surprise... It revealed some aspects of the characters which explained some of their current behaviour...

He touched on a lot of things about how Dev and Sona feel about their love, how they are both stubborn and incorrigible, when it comes to their own views and beliefs...

But, I want to bring into attention some of the statements that was made by him, which I felt were quite critical for us to understand, so that we could solve the puzzle known to us, as 'Devakshi'

3-a. "They are riddled with flaws and that's what makes them interesting. They are real and incorrigible and unpredictable."

In very simple words, he explained the essence of both the show and the protagonists...

3-b. "They falter repeatedly and don't emerge as better as a consequence. They are stubborn, and they hold on to what they think it's right. The truths for them are relative, even convenient. They see things from their vantage point. And that's how people are. They seldom change after a certain age."

This statement, surprisingly reminded me of the Constitution of India.. Before, you start searching for my address to come and beat me... Please let me elaborate...

Our Constitution has been written to enforce certain fundamental ideas and concepts (like freedom of expression, equality for all, etc) and it was heavily influenced by the ideals and beliefs of the leaders during Independence movement...

But, now after 70 years of our Independence and innumerable additions and modifications to our Constitution, the core and fundamental pillars of this document has not been changed. And, they will continue to serve as 'North Star', till the end of eternity...

So, this document should be taken as an absolute truth but again, we see that it is not so.. While we would love to be absolute in nature, but like everything in life, it is also relative...
There have been several instances throughout our long history when individuals, communities and governments have used and tweaked the rules, to suit their own purposes and fulfill their own desires...

This example, again leads me to another thing... Newton's first law of motion, also known as 'Law of Inertia'..

According to the law, every object continues to remain in their existing state of motion, even after the state of motion has changed.. In other simple words, an object remains to be in a state of motion, even after the object comes to a rest.. Hence, it explains an object's hesitance and resistance to change.

So, using the above mentioned examples, I would like to explain on how these supposedly non-related concepts combines together beautifully in the context of humanity and its complexities...

People are a combination of habits and behaviours.. These habits and patterns are a result of circumstances.. And, these circumstances are a product of the events and the values and ideas being passed to them, especially in their childhood years...

The beliefs, core values and ideals passed down to us, during our early childhood and teenage years, become the axis on which our adult life rotates... These become our guide and our reference points...

I am not saying that people don't change... They do change but as time goes, these changes come at a more infrequent or gradual pace... They no longer happen instantly or occur in a matter of hours, days or months.. Our hesitance and reluctance to go against our core values also becomes a plays a crucial role in this process...

For example, babies who start sleeping in a separate room from an early age, accepts this change much more quickly (in a matter of days or weeks)... But, children who have always slept with their parents (like 6 to 8 years, even longer) will face more difficulty in adjusting and adapting to this change...

Now, coming back to the story and how the above concept applies to our characters...

Both Dev and Sonakshi are a product of the beliefs and circumstances that they have been exposed to, in their childhood..

Both, before meeting each other, continued to believe in their values and were driven by these ideals... Both of them have achieved respect and success following the same values.. For them, these were some of the values which were absolute in nature...

But, as time passed by and their relationship went started and went through all the changes, these values, while continuing to remain important, became relative in nature..

There have been several instances throughout their story when these values took a backseat but their reluctance to let these ideals go and hence, change themselves have always been challenging for them, not only due to external factors, but also themselves...

For example, Dev's habit of always blaming himself for not being good enough or his inability to let of his past... Or, for that matter, Sona's habit of protecting everyone or intervening in the matter of others due to her concern...

I am not saying that they cannot change but now, after living nearly 35 (or 33) years on this planet Earth (27 or 26 years when they initially met), they will no longer find it to change their inner selves...

I guess, the same applies to other characters, especially Ishwari and Bijoy and hence, their resistance to change their stance... They have believed in something for more than 50 years..

Chances are, even if the situation between Dev and Sona improves, their perspectives regarding each other and their children's desired partner will probably, never change...

3-c. "They know for a fact that no one, absolutely no one, can love as they once loved each other, that despite how it ended, no one has felt the love they have. It's the kind of arrogant, rude, superior love that lays waste the feelings of other people."

This statement was an interesting one... For me, it explained why they continue to listen to their hearts and sometimes, act in a way, which goes against the expectations of the people around them... When they listen to the whispers of the inner selves, they don't really care about how it will affect the feelings of people around them, especially those who are closest to them...

3-d. "They love deeply and passionately but that doesn't make them kind, and that's a welcome change. They seldom feel embarrassed about the things they do. They move on, brush them under the carpet like it didn't happen, and that's how most of us behave. When they fight, they pick the points that are most convenient to them, ignoring instances and arguments that don't suit their side."

Now, this probably, was the most fascinating aspect of the blog... In this forum, we have continued to always debate and discuss on the question on, 'why doesn't Dev/Sona understand or introspect on where they went wrong and then, correct their mistakes?'

And, I believe me that we have finally received an answer to the above question.. The above statements spoke about how both of them, not only knows their own mistakes but also has the empathy to understand the other's point of view...

But, still doesn't do the necessary introspection, until and unless they are pushed into a corner.. They continuously try to pick instances and events which support their own thought process and hence, use them to justify their own actions...

They are both stubborn and hence, doesn't like to look at the other side of the coin, so that they could continue believing in their own set of values...

For example, Dev never really wants to know on what challenges has been undergone by Sona during their separation or even during their marriage, since he knew, once he comes to know of the extent pain and the trauma...

Then, his relationships with his family members, especially Ishwari is going to take an even worse turn and that goes against his core values that have been ingrained in him since his childhood...

This also explains why Sona didn't like Dev to speak out his mind (like he did in an inebriated state), since he speaks about his pain and his anguish.. Something which makes Sona uncomfortable since she knows that she is also partially responsible for his torment...

She was never able to see Dev in pain and especially, if she is the reason for it (as she explained to Dev after bringing him back from the engagement ceremony).. But, his continuous, yet unintentional outbursts forces her to see things in a way which also leaves her in an anguished state..

They both don't have the ability to see the other in pain, and hence, they continuously try to turn a blind eye to the other's perspective to avoid that situation but then, something or the other happens which forces them to see the other side and this breaks the walls that they have carefully built around themselves.. And, hence, forces them to reflect back on their shared past...

I feel, we are slowly reaching a point where they will not only be forced to reflect but also, will be required to act on their reflections...

4. And, after seeing yesterday's episode, it is safe to conclude with Vicky-GKB's absurd plan and Bijoy's comeback, the drama quotient is going to turn up a few notches and I guess, I have to go back my former routine to analyze the whole week's episodes instead of analyzing and dissecting each episode (which has been the case for the previous week's episode).

I also wanted to contribute on the change in dynamics between Dev, Golu and Soha... But, I feel that I have already said enough... And, if time permits, I would add my views on the topic..

But, in my opinion, Dev needs to learn to balance his roles as 'BigCha' and 'Papa'... But, this is not as simple as it looks..

I know that I sound vague, and I would definitely like to clarify and elaborate on it... But, due to time constraints, I would address them in a separate post...

Waiting for all your replies and questions...

@ DQ my take on Elena and Ishwari's conversation...perceptions differ but only with tinted glass you can find Elena as the ideal bahu...am I surprised not at all? Because for Ishwari, she wants someone who is much inferior to her as Dev's Bahu so that she can retain her god image... And Elena perfectly fits in there...Here I would like to recall sona's dialogue with Asha where she said "how can I forget his mom who always tried to magnify my mistakes"...so basically her insecurities stem from the fact Sona is a perfect match for her son and Ishwari's fear was eventually he will leave the Dixits...can't blame her also because her exposure is very limited and in her surroundings this is what she must have seen...

@Grace Agreed it is a humongous task to expect Golu to understand Dev's feelings but this is DEV DIXIT...he expects his loved ones to behave in the manner in which he would have behaved...age no bar...

Dev might still be wearing Jeans, but they are not as tattered and torn as they were in the beginning of season 2. Also since the anniversary episode, he is no longer wearing the leather cuffs on his right hand. Also when he goes to meet Khatri in Jail and later to Bose house, he is wearing a watch. Also he was wearing black sports shoes and not those white basketball shoes. 😆

On the other hand, Sonakshi has started to wear flats, is not wearing bracelets or necklaces, sometimes wears finger rings and no watch. Also her hair is not tousled, but is brushed(may not be very well, but it is not like how it was during Saurabh's sangeet).

Too much observation. 😳 😳.

Shaavi, you are not alone. You know crazy DQ is always observing colours, fabrics, accessories, camera angles and light!

I had been looking out for Sona's feet to check her heels.. Thanks for clarifying. I am glad the painful footwear is gone. She looked amazing but it symbolised pain(to me). It added height to an already tall Sona. I am sure they will be back.

Hi all 😊

Amazing discussion going on 👏 regarding Dev favoring Suhana over Golu and balancing relationships.

I am not a parent, not even married. But, I would like to share my views and contribute to the discussion on parental favoritism based on what I feel and what I saw around me growing up and few observations about Dev's nature from the show.

Let me first start with the latter. From the beginning of the story, Dev has been a person who would focus only on one thing at a time. All through his childhood and early adulthood, his main focus was on upliftment of his family from poverty, to become capable enough and earn good enough for his family, to provide his family a well settled life. During this time, his main motivation was his mother. He worshiped her like God, cared for little things related to her but still his main focus was his studies and work (because his mother wanted it to be so). For example, in a flashback a 10 or 12 year old Dev runs to lift buckets for Ishwari, but she sends him away for studying. In another instance, Dev doesn't even know that his mother is facing health problems for past one year as he was abroad due to his work and his mother didn't bother to tell him.

When Sonakshi became his love, we see Dev neglecting work for Sonakshi. He begins to cancel and postpone meetings randomly. In fact, even before the realization of love, he forgot to call his mother about Sonakshi's accident, he forgot about that important meeting with Gujrals and investors because he came to know that Sonakshi was not feeling well etc.

Next, when Ishwari overdosed herself with sleeping pills, his focus shifted to his mother and he broke up with Sonakshi. However, he continued to suffer with a bruised heart and kept stalking Sonakshi (his focus again shifts to her). When he could not take anymore, they reunited, on the face of it with Ishwari's consent, and during the marriage phase, the real tug of war started. Dev is mostly used to give all his focus at one thing at a given time. But here he couldn't choose any one or take a stand. He also failed to create a balance between the relationships. So the marriage broke, and so did his ties with his mother.

For the last seven years, Golu was the only child who looked at him as a father figure and his only ray of hope. The realization that Dev has become a father, he has a daughter of his own has brought a huge change in him. He has changed forever and his ray of hope is now Suhana. Now with both Golu and Suhana in the picture, another similar tug of war has started, but an innocent one (till now, God knows what RR would do). Dev's approach is still the same and this time too he cannot choose any one and needs to balance relationships. The faster he realizes this, the better.

Now I come to the first point.

Parental favoritism is very common and maybe even natural. But just because it is common, it does not mean that it is acceptable. There are many more things that are common but not acceptable; like patriarchy, crime against women, racial discrimination etc.

Parental favoritism may not be much of a big deal for the parent. It may only be an extra scoop of ice-cream, little cheating on the game of ludo, a little more attention, love or an extra piece of chocolate or whatever. But for a child it means a lot. Children are very perceptive and sensitive to such things, because they thrive on love and attention by the parent. And both kids on either side of the partiality line bear its brunt, especially if the kids really care for each other. The discriminated kid feels being let down by their parent and bears a strong sense of resentment, towards the parent or the favored child or both, that may even carry forward till adulthood. It may even affect their self esteem. The favored kid ends up feeling guilty for no fault of his/hers.

One can compare the situation with Neha-Ishwari-Dev relationship. Neha bore a lifelong resentment over Ishwari's favoritism for Dev, though she loved both her mother and brother. We could starkly see how her jealosy affected even Dev-Sona's marriage after she came back to IN. Neha and Dev would have shared a different relationship, they may have been best of friends (a small glimpse of which is seen when Dev approaches Neha to understand how to identify if you are in love) had Ishwari not separated them with this invisible line of partiality that brewed a poisonous one-sided resentment on Neha's side. Dev may been more stable emotionally with a sister to guide him and Neha would have been happier with a brother to show her path to liberate herself from all past sorrows. Instead, due to Neha's resentment, Dev always ended up feeling guilty for "stealing" her mother from her, while he was not even the real culprit. (Trust me, I know this feeling; it feels very bad. I am glad, all is now well between me and my sister).

Another example is Vicky, who felt his father loved and cared for Dev more than him. We can clearly see today in Vicky's actions what fruits are borne by those early seeds of resentment and unfairness towards Dev, bowed by his own father. Vicky has turned into a ruthless person driven by jealosy, but one day he too was an innocent kid like Golu. How did he grow into the Vicky he is today? What drove him to be this? Now imagine Mamaji asking young Vicky gently why he is not studying, if he has any kind of problem, or something he wants to talk about, is he angry about something that he is throwing these temper tantrums; instead of scolding him why are you not like Dev, learn something from your cousin. "Shabash Dev, well done son." "My son is permanently nalayak"...Vicky always felt his cousin stole his father's love and appreciation that was rightfully his.

Or think about Bijoy-Saurav relationship for a moment. Their relationship has been well dissected in the series of this thread, along with now Ronita coming into the mix. Hence I am not writing much about it.

Not only homes, such favoritism happens in classrooms as well and they affect a growing child's self-esteem as well. And we all know how much the other kids hate that kid who is the teacher's pet , because the teacher would not give them enough chances for reading aloud or acknowledge their participation in the class just because they are not her favorite.

I believe, it may be natural that the parent (Dev) like one kid (Suhana) over the other (Golu), but while showering with love, attention and care one should be cognizant about each child's feeling. These little things leave a lifelong mark. (On that note imagine how much difficult it would be to manage a pair of twins😕😆).

Suyash...your posts always leave us in a state that we remain awestruck for some time, until someone says...mooh band kar do; varna makki guss jayega 😆...And each of your posts conveys how much gutan you would be experiencing while working with those dumb machines...And that is helping you to express each soch & feelings in such a convincing way.

Now, coming to the above part of your post, when I read DD's words (point 3-d of your post) I was like what was he trying to convey. But, I should say, your words cleared all my doubts. And thank you very much for the same.

Tia...you have well presented all the facts with reasons...and thank you for it.

That's all what I wanted to say...being a parent or guardian, we need to be aware of the other child's feelings when he is let down, whether it was done knowingly or unknowingly.

Dev now already have seen Golu being disappointed with him not once or twice. And it should for sure ring an alarm in him on why the otherwise understanding Golu who supported him to the extent of taking the mobile to school so that his bigcha could talk to Soha, is now throwing tantrums. Don't want to see another Dev-Sona parallel in their relationship.
