Welcome to the weekly analysis thread, where we dissect the heck out of the characters, situations, and the possibilities for the leap! This thread is dedicated to in-depth character and story analysis in this new phase of the show. Let's explore how the show, in its complexity makes us think. We leave the thread open-ended so that we can discuss varied topics with each other in a more informal way, and new thread begins every Sunday evening for ongoing discussions as the week unfolds. If you are interested in this exercise, jump right in!

_____________

Everyone is invited to join as long as they avoid:

1. Moral policing. This thread should be an inclusive and safe space for people to express their views. This is a work of fiction and multiple interpretations only make it a richer experience. If something about the show makes you uncomfortable, be open to the idea that you might be missing the necessary perspective that someone else could provide.

2. Bashing CVs. Criticism is welcome, but should be focused and constructive.

3. Bashing the characters, or pitting them against one another. If you think either the Dixits or the Boses are entirely right, and the other entirely to blame, this is not the thread for you.

And most importantly...

4. BASHING OR PERSONAL INSULTS OF OTHER MEMBERS

This means we accept other people's viewpoints with respect, and don't call them names for not agreeing with us. Either we continue the argument calmly, supported by examples from the show, or we respectfully agree to disagree and leave that discussion alone.

In Friday's episode, one of the things that intrigued me most was Ishwari's justification for not allowing Sonakshi in the house on that fateful day five and a half years ago. She reasoned that Dev had been through hell when Sona left, and what a hard time it was for him and the whole family. Then when Golu came into their family, Dev's life started improving slowly, and Ishwari states that she didn't want to risk that slowly-emerging happiness by allowing Sona back in their lives. I thought this tied in so beautifully with the show's central tagline, "kya paate hai, kya khote hai jab dil ke faisle dimag se hote hai."

If we take my definition of dil/dimag ke faisle (in pursuit of happiness vs. prevention of suffering), Ishwari made a dimag ka faisla that day. She chose to protect the new, delicate happiness that Dev found in Golu instead of taking the risk to get him his true happiness, Sona. However, as she and Dev both discovered all these years later, that would have been a risk with huge returns for Dev's happiness in the form of Soha. If Ishwari had thought about pursuing Dev's happiness instead of protecting him from suffering, the scenario today would have been very different.

And I think this is where Ishwari's character remains complex and interesting. She is still stuck in survival mode from all her years of dire poverty, and has never developed the confidence to pursue happiness either for herself or for her children. To her, it is an unnecessary risk that compromises the family's security. Since she wasn't the one to earn the money, nor does she have any idea how much they have or what it means, she is constantly insecure about losing their position, unlike Dev who is ever-confident that he can easily amass the wealth again if lost. Basically, she is totally unable to make dil ke faisle and she never fought for Dev's happiness, she fought for his security (but she doesn't see these as different because survival mode). As a result, she denied him his own family once again and forced him to settle for being a foster parent for Golu. I am not undermining Dev's relationship with Golu, which is real and deep, but highlighting how Ishwari made him settle for second best so that the rest of the family could live without insecurity.

So in the end, kya paaya? Dev did recover and become a functioning adult again, without Sonakshi in his life, and continued to provide for the family. He developed a close relationship with Golu and is able to derive some contentment out of living freely and for himself. Kya khoya? Soha, Sona and therefore a deep and lasting happiness and fulfillment in Dev's life, the kind of happiness he doesn't have to struggle for on a daily basis. Sadly, only Dev feels this loss.

Even I feel the same divorce word is not a taboo in Indian television y the makers have refrain from using it god knows.Nobody any day mentions about it but only about that unfateful night. They would have met atleast once if they had gone for divorce proceedings,so even I doubt it.
