‘We wanted to pull each other’s hair’: Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal on the phase that nearly broke them

Sonakshi Sinha has spoken openly about a difficult phase in her relationship with Zaheer Iqbal, sharing that they chose couples therapy three years into dating. The actress said they reached a point where they couldn’t understand each other’s perspective, which led to frequent arguments and rising frustration. In her words, it felt like their three year itch, a stage where they “wanted to pull each other’s hair out.”

She recalled the moment during a conversation on Soha Ali Khan’s podcast. Sonakshi said that even though they cared deeply for each other, something as simple as a discussion would quickly turn tense. Nothing seemed to land right, and both of them began to feel unheard. What this really means is that they were struggling to translate intention into communication, a problem many couples quietly deal with.

According to Sonakshi, the idea of therapy came from Zaheer. She didn’t resist it, and both agreed that if they wanted the relationship to last, they needed help from a neutral space. The actress said that after two sessions, things began to shift, mainly because they finally understood how the other person processed emotions and expressed themselves. She added that therapy made them realise that what someone says in the moment is not always what they truly mean.

Sonakshi and Zaheer eventually married on June 23, 2024, in a simple ceremony at her Mumbai home. After the wedding, they hosted a reception in the city with several well known names in attendance. Celebrities like Salman Khan, Rekha, Tabu, Anil Kapoor, Kajol, Richa Chadha, Gulshan Devaiah, Aditi Rao Hydari, Siddharth and Raveena Tandon were part of the celebration.

The couple’s story began in 2017 at a gathering after the Tubelight premiere. What started as a brief interaction turned into a long conversation that stretched for hours. Sonakshi said she walked out of that night knowing their connection felt different. Her recent comments now give a clearer picture of how they nurtured that bond through both easy and difficult phases, choosing to work on it rather than walk away.
