I assume everyone is reeling from the events of the past week! I know I am. 😳

What I want to do most in response, is dissect the heck out of the characters, situations, and the possibilities for the leap, without having to make individual posts for each idea. Since there isn't really a place on the forum to do this, a few other members and I thought of making a thread dedicated to in-depth character and story analysis in this new phase of the show. Let's explore how the show, in its complexity makes us think.

Everyone is invited to join as long as they avoid:

1. Moral policing. This thread should be an inclusive and safe space for people to express their views. This is a work of fiction and multiple interpretations only make it a richer experience. If something about the show makes you uncomfortable, be open to the idea that you might be missing the necessary perspective that someone else could provide.

2. Bashing CVs. Criticism is welcome, but should be focused and constructive.

3. Bashing the characters, or pitting them against one another. If you think either the Dixits or the Boses are entirely right, and the other entirely to blame, this is not the thread for you.

And most importantly...

4. BASHING OR PERSONAL INSULTS OF OTHER MEMBERS

This means we accept other people's viewpoints with respect, and don't call them names for not agreeing with us. Either we continue the argument calmly, supported by examples from the show, or we respectfully agree to disagree and leave that discussion alone.

I will leave the thread open-ended so that we can discuss varied topics with each other in a more informal way. If it works out well, maybe we can start one every Sunday evening to have ongoing discussions as the week unfolds. If you are interested in this exercise, jump right in!

Would love it. In fact sounds like a wonderful idea.
Discussing the show like this sometimes gives a fresh perspective and helps us empathise and understand the characters better. I have anyways always liked your posts as they always analyse the show in a very neutral manner

Wow! Great to see so many positive responses already. Excited to enter this new phase with you guys 😃

Since I didnt get a chance to post my views last week, I thought I would kick-start the thread with some of my feelings on the past few episodes before we "leap" ahead. 😆

The highlight of the last few episodes for me was the fight that Sona and Dev had when Sona came to return the money. They were both so good at pointing out each other's ego, but so blind to their own. And this is precisely the effect that Ishwari and Bijoy, respectively, have on them. I thought it was very significant that in the car, on the way back from Shimla, Sona cited the two major sources of her anxiety: Ma ke expectations and Baba ke questions. Looking back, she has been torn the whole time about not living up to Bijoy's exacting moral standards in her marriage with Dev and in her dealings with the Dixits. That guilt overwhelmed her when she found her father, who trusted her, put in such a compromising position, and the deal was sealed by Dev's accidental slap.

If you look at it that way, you can see the ways in which this union was always doomed unless something changed -- why it was not difficult for the writers to amp uo Vicky and GKB's role for a few episodes and take us down this particular path. Any effort of Sona's to fit in with the Dixits was met with resistance from Bijoy (tempered by the fact that she didn't live and home, and Asha's good sense), and any effort by Dev to become a part of the Bose family was interpreted as betrayal by Ishwari. Here we had two individuals who were willing to go to the end of the earth for each other, but every tiny effort they made for each other was made into a huge issue that needed further weeks and months of sorting out.

I can't blame them for being as exhausted as they were in the last episode, and just ending it. The tragedy is that they got so much joy from each other, but it was not enough when confronted with the unhappiness they gave their parents as a result. And Sona and Dev, from the beginning, have put their parents first. It is what made their story unique, and apparently what will continue to drive it in the future. But now we are adding a new generation into the mix, and that should bring up some interesting questions.

Short version:

Bijoy was always a man who lived in an idealistic world untouched by reality. He is a person who hates adjusting and hated the fact that Sona has to adjust in the Dixit house. When a person develops the feeling that he or his way of living is perfect he starts on the path of destroying himself and his loved ones.
Same is the problem with Ishwari. Dev's designating her God made her believe that she is actually a Goddess like selfless person who has sacrificed a lot for everyone and now it is the duty of everyone to keep her happy. Gkb fuelled this by her chamchagiri and so Ishwari kept her close.

But the price was ultimately paid by their children. But yes, at least Sona successfully ignored her father's dictates and ideas till it became impossible to ignore his insult in the five crore drama. Dev on the other hand kept on blindly following his mother without stopping to think even once that she could be wrong. Even where he could see how wrong she was, he turned a blind eye.

That is why post leap, Dev's character change is so drastic. He is a guy who has been betrayed by everyone including his mother. He is on a mission to prove that no one can hurt him.

@Payal: Completely agree with you about Bijoy, as well as the important distinctions between the Dixits and the Boses. I think one of the main reasons Sona could put her father's expectations aside was because of Asha. She tempered Bijoy's absolutism a lot and gave Sona plenty of space and support to try and become a part of the Dixit family. In fact, Mamaji was a similar force for Dev, and I think it was significant that he was conspicuously absent when things really began to get out of control.

I think you are on to something with Dev's drastic transformation post-leap as well. Dev gave Sona that fire to fight, a cause to fight for (her family's honour), and a conviction that leaving him was the right thing to do. When we left him, Dev himself had no such purpose or peace of mind. I am guessing that is why he wanders aimlessly.

I want to talk about some symbolisms and hints we saw in the last few weeks.

Gosh... where do I start...? Perhaps from the start (of this New Year...). Some of you know how I tend to focus less on what's said and more on what's not said (in that particular scene). The episode that aired on 2nd Jan 2017 had all the hints in there for us. Hindsight is 20/20 so we can say that now. The makers did a brilliant job of keeping us in the dark. It had all the major players in the days to come. If time allows, please go and watch it again. It summarises what I think has happened in all these 7 years.

Ishwari squarely puts the blame on Sonakshi and if the spoilers are correct continues to do so 7 years on. Asha reminds Bijoy that if they don't step back, this couple will split. Dev puts Boses and Dixits at the same pedestal when he said he lied to everyone to be able to marry Sonakshi. Similar to what Sam says, both the families let the couple down badly.

I think we can also predict who will be the main players in season2. Dev, Sonakshi, Ishwari, Bijoy, Asha, RR, Vicky, Elena and Dear Lord (more on that later. Have a theory there too lol!). Like everyone else, I am curious to know what happens to Neha and dada. And what's the deal with Elena. We will know... tonight or tomorrow we will.

And I can't help but think about the last scene. They both part ways but the fire is still burning... Does that fire represent their love? Or their hate? I think both... Like before they don't go their separate ways in the ishwari niwas. Last time it was the hospital, this time it's their farmhouse (Dev you had a farmhouse with a fully stocked bar? Why didn't you take your wife there ever?). But again at night. All good things happen in this show at night. (I know I say good... I think 7 years will give them time to introspect)

And then clothes. There is a meaning to them also. This was the first time Sonakshi wore a dress where her mangalsutra was not visible. It's as if she was protecting her marriage instinctively however she herself had to then burn it in the fire which is burning in them both. Also Dev's new avatar wears leather jackets - tough on the outside?

Will Baby Devakshi be the new Ishwari albeit a more pleasant avatar? Will she be the reason they meet and will she like Dev till she realises he is the dad? Just like Ishwari liked Sona till she became her son's girlfriend? Will the next phase be a pleasant (suhana) one?

I for one cannot imagine how Dev woke up every day of these last 7 years without seeing Sonakshi's face. The way he used to look at her with his one eye in the mornings, I never thought in a million years they will separate. I cannot imagine how Sonakshi held this tiny miny khargosh in her arms and didn't think of Dev for the last 7 years. For the last 3 days for me...

Gila Gila bas pani palkon pe rehe gaya...

PS1: I want to make another response talking about Closure (or the lack of) and role reversal. I'll try to get that in before we end our 7 saal ka vanvaas... else later after the show gets aired

PS2: I have a theory on when the season 2 was planned. Will post later

PS3: I had theorised that Sona moved to Shimla because we saw Suhana in a woollen cap in the promos. Obviously I was wrong. Seems she went to Calcutta.

PS4: Is Suhana Dev & Sona's biological daughter? Is she Sona's biological daughter? Is she an adopted child?

PS5: The jhula will be gone for now. But will we get a weepy Dev flashback on the jhula? Will he live in the same room? The photos will surely be gone. Will Elena address him as jeeju or dev bhai now?

PS6: Would be lovely to see Riya manage the business... Sona "saved" Riya and she is the only one trained by Dev to manage the business. And Sona once told Vicky she won't let him steal from Dev

Good thought Sam.😊
Keeping aside who is right or who is wrong in this entire mess or whose share is more and whose share is less in this entire destruction, one thing I felt after Friday episode is that they both are tired of trying. Esp Dev, I think this time he gave up on every relationship in his life and I think that's the reason for this drastic change in his character post leap. Intensionally or unintentionally, he gave a reason and aim for Sona and at the same time he became aimless. Let's see how the story gets unfold.
