I would like to add to what Sam said here
How about we look for Gender Neutrality in the show and more generally around us? The show no doubt does a great job of bringing forth many uncomfortable issues around us. However, they barely scratch the surface on this one topic. Like Sam said, its raising the questions. I would say I want to see more.
When Sona and Bijoy spoke about how men do cry and when Dev reminded his nephew that Men get hurt but need to build endurance, those were high points in breaking the stereotypes associated with men in our society.
Some of you will recall my post on use of the term hickey and how I then further asked if use of similar terms and perhaps women given space to be able to breastfeed when out and about is now changing in our society?
Ishwari, for example, had a very clear definition of what a girl can and can't do and what a boy can. Dev who wasn't much older than his sisters, but ran a successful business, was allowed to be out an about as he pleased (he proposed at 2 in the morning!) but the girls weren't. She had no qualms about this. Riya taking the public transport and reaching home later than Dev was a shock to her. Dev helped us see, why cant a woman come late from work when a man can. Now I wonder, when Asha wanted to model for the nighties why was she not allowed to. Why was it a big deal that Kushal would allow his wife to work? Why could dada not sell lingerie but sona could at times be alone in her boss's house with only her boss there? Why could Asha not write about her crush in the book? Why was Sona only looking for jobs in Delhi when Mr Dixit got her sacked but dada went to Shimla (or somewhere) for an interview?
When the pink saree date happened, I was very keen to see Ishwari's reaction on finding out that Dev had a young woman in his room in a fairly sexy outfit and a romantic setting. I was also keen to see Asha and Bijoy's reaction when they find out that Sona was at Mr Dixit's house, alone with him in a sexy outfit and a romantic setting. Because I really wanted to see how these sanskari families feel about their adult children's romance male or female. Alas, we didn't see any of this.
Gender neutrality is a difficult concept to implement in real life. Everyone should strive for it. Everyone should for example watch the movie PINK and learn from it. This will only make every man and woman's life easier and safer. But absolute gender neutrality is far from 100% achieved and sadly we have to live with that but also keep making it better every day.
After the first break-up and when Bijoy wasn't keen on the rishta, I had high hopes we will see a live in relationship. I have often been tricked by the makers into believing that they will open the society's uncomfortable relationships' bonnet. How would the Boses and Dixits feel about that?
Lets take this a step further. How would the Boses feel about Jatin & Sona having an intimate relationship that they mutually do not want to convert into the commitment of a marriage? What if dada was to be in such a relationship?
How does Ishwari feel about her son's numerous girl friends who he potentially spends his nights with?
I would love to see the makers scratch the surface of feminism and show us how many times do our characters actually allow their sons and daughters to step out of their own perception of gender equality and be happy about that.
I often wonder, why did Dev, Dada or Baba not offer the mussourie to Sona when Sona does drink alcohol?

It's interesting that you mention this, because after separation, the focus seems to be on what Dev and Sona couldn't give each other. It reminded me of when Ishwari told Dev that there were other women who, unlike Sona, would have stood by their commitment and stayed no matter what, even if it were a question of life and death. Dev rightly dismissed this, and I think it's because the part of him that undestands Sona knows what she did give him. That acceptance and emotional security is not something every girl would be able to provide him, no matter how long she was willing to stay in a marriage made empty by Ishwari's constant manipulation. His anger may stem from what he thinks she failed to give him, but his love was born of the things she did bring into his life.Similarly, with Sona, there are any number of men who can give her what Dev didn't, but the question remains open as to whether there are other men who can give her what Dev did -- the reason she fell for him in the first place. In my understanding, that thing is romance and excitement. This idea was further reinforced by the story she told when he was injured. He is the one who picked her out of the crowd and filled her life with the colour she craved. I think that is possibly the reason her relationship with Jatin remains platonic (obviously we need to see more to know for sure). The Boses, especially Bijoy, see themselves as perfect so it makes perfect sense to bring someone just like them into the fold. But the way I am beginning to understand Sona, she wants more than what her family provides in terms of life experience. She likes the drama and wants the adventure.I know this was a bit tangential to your post, but it's a thought that occurred to me as I read. Let me know what you all think!
well said and I think there is another reason too why she think she is not equal to Dev. Dixit family was poor but Dev made them come out of poverty. they struggled but Dev with his hard work, dedication and intelligence he made his family come out of gareebi..i think it was really something to do. there are some people who is poor but all can't become rich how much they tried but Dev made something impossible to possible. maybe she thinks if she is in Dev place is she is not capable of to do that. though she is also bread winner for her family but they are not that poor as dixits. and before leap she didnt think she is equal to dev. its different he never seen her like his unequal but after leap she thinks she is equal to dev as she also did the same bring her family out of misery ,bring back their house like dev did in S 1 and make her family rich like dev did ,provide her family every thing like dev did so I think now she believes she is equal to dev.becuase she also did something which was impossible as dev taunted her how will you you get your house back. don't know iam making sense or not 😆Originally posted by: LiveLife321
@shaavi, let me share my 2 cents on this topic of why Sona never felt equal to Dev? I feel partly it's because of her upbringing and mainly because of Mami. When she fell in love with dev she doesn't have this kind of doubt and that's the reason she also wanted to confess her feelings to him initially. I feel her this feeling of inequality started when Natasha came in to picture and then how Mami used to compare her with Natasha and used to tell her how she is not equal to Dev? I feel somewhere that got imprinted in her mind which even dev words were not able to remove later. She also conveyed the same in her talks to Dada and Elena before Dev's confession.
She came from a family where everyone praised her for being perfect. So anything less than perfect is not acceptable for her when it comes to acknowledge of her efforts and I feel that's reason she use to push herself in to dixit family matters even after receiving resistance from them. She needs to listen from ishwari and Mami that she is perfect bahu for this family and she kept all her efforts towards this direction at the cost of her relationship with Dev since some where in this hunger to be perfect, she took his love for granted. And she never allowed him in to this space to know what is happening but at the end all these details came to him like a storm from which he was not able to escape.

Sorry, went to pick my son back from school. Here is the continuation to my previous reply.
I feel this is where dev should have helped her. For him and his family, Mami's words may not matter may be because they must have listened worst than these when they were under their shelter. But it's not the case with Sona. He protected her when she was his employee and also even after marriage he took stand for her in many occasions. But I feel where he failed is in communicating same to her. Any way lack of communication is always their issue. She never voiced her struggle and he never understood her trouble.
