I've just read through all the parts and needless to say but you are a brilliant gifted writer
Hi guys, Part 5 is here. Hope you like it 😊
*Flashback*
Sonakshi was standing in the balcony of their room, staring pensively ahead when she felt two strong hands grab her from behind and felt Dev's soft lips trailing butterfly kisses across her neck.
"Hey beautiful" whispered Dev. She struggled out of his hold and turned to look at him. "Not now, Dev." she said while walking inside their room. Dev followed her. "What's wrong? Why so serious?" he asked, completely clueless as to why she was behaving so weirdly.
"Does it matter?" replied Sonakshi, as she sat on the bed and grabbed a book, pretending to read. Dev was confused. So he tried again. He slipped into bed beside her and started kissing her jaw again, trying to get further than her neck this time. All but shoving him aside, she glared at him, causing him to finally take notice of her foul mood.
"What is the matter with you?" he said, a little irritated.
"Why don't you ask your mother," she replied, indignantly.
Dev rolled his eyes. "Not this again. What happened this time?" "She doesn't like me Dev. How many times do I tell you this. She accepted me for your happiness. But she doesn't consider me her daughter in law as yet. I'm still that outsider who managed to capture her son's attention long enough for him to marry her." said Sonakshi.
"Come on Sonakshi, you're being unfair. It's been less than 6 months to our marriage. She needs some time to adjust. She's trying. And she is always so sweet to you in front of me." Pleaded Dev.
"Exactly. In front of you. She's sweet to me only in front of you. Once I am alone with her, she becomes cold and distant. I tried to bond with her. I took some days off from work so that I can spend some time with her, try to gel better as her daughter in law and not as your wife. I tried to learn cooking from her, but she refuses to teach me. Yesterday, I asked her if I can accompany her to her kitty party that she attends at Mamiji's place, all the daughter in laws were going to come, but she dismissed that as well. You know I am not even a least bit interested in these kind of social gatherings, but I tried, only for her. She doesn't even want to give me a chance, Dev. It's like she's trying to convince herself that you never married me, that I'm only a guest here for a few days, not a family member" finished Sonakshi.
"Okay, now you're over reacting. Just because she refused to let you tag along for a party doesn't mean she hates you," reasoned Dev.
"Oh really? Why don't you ask her if I can accompany her instead of you for her monthly medical check-up. It makes more sense for me to go along with her. I'm her nutritionist also, apart from being her daughter in law. Plus, I work in the same hospital."
"Fine, lets do that," said Dev.
They both walked down towards the living room where Ishwari was instructing Kicchu bhaiya about some chores. She saw Dev and a big smile graced her face. "Arey beta, you came home early today. Kicchu, set the table, let's have dinner together today." She said, still smiling as she ran her hands along his face.
She didn't bother acknowledging Sonakshi, who was standing behind Dev, a fact that went completely unnoticed by him. Sonakshi gestured Dev to ask her about the check up as they all sat down for dinner. Dev nodded imperceptibly and held Ishwari's hand. She looked lovingly at her son.
"Maa, you have to get your medical check up done tomorrow," he said. "Oh yes, beta. I remember. We both will go together, like always" she replied.
"Ummm, Maa, I was thinking, wouldn't it be better if Sonakshi accompanied you, after all, she works in the same hospital, and will also be able to immediately look over your reports."
Ishwari's face immediately fell at the mention of Sonakshi accompanying her instead of Dev. "Are you busy tomorrow Dev? We can go later. I don't want to trouble Sonakshi. She has so many patients and lots of other work also" said Ishwari.
"No No Maa, I can accompany you. It would also give us an opportunity to spend some time together," cut in Sonakshi. "Arey nai beta. Tum kyu takleef karogi. After all, we already spend so much time together at home." said Ishwari. "Besides, Dev, If you're busy then tell me, I will go alone," she said with a dejected look on her face.
"No Maa, no work is more important than you. I will come with you tomorrow, ok?" said Dev. Ishwari regained the smile on her face and started talking animatedly to Dev about her day, as Dev glanced in Sonakshi's direction. Sonakshi, who had a I told u so' expression on her face, ignored the two of them and concentrated on her food.
After dinner, Sonakshi was busy folding her clothes and prepping for the next day, looking over her patient's files as she packed them in her bag, when Dev entered their room. He could make out that Sonakshi was mad at him, but he didn't know how to make things better. She saw him entering but pretended to ignore him. He knew she was pretending. Finally, conceding their unspoken war, he broke the silence, "Look Sonakshi, I know Maa said no regarding you accompanying her, but I always take her for her medical check ups. She's just used to going with me. Plus, she knows that you are currently very busy with work since you took a few days off recently."
"Really Dev, are you serious? You're actually buying that story of not wanting to put me through any trouble coz of my workload? Why do you think I have all this workload in the first place. I did not take those leaves to relax. I took them to spend some time with her and try to bond with her. But on all the days I was home, she made some or the other excuse to avoid spending time with me. Some times going to Mamaji's place and sometimes to kitty parties. And I am not the only one who's busy, you are one of the most influential businessmen in India, your workload is much worse than mine. But she doesn't seem to mind any of that. It was very clear that she did not want to go with me. Stop defending her all the time and accept the fact that she doesn't like me and never will," said Sonakshi, almost on the verge of tears.
"Oh please Sonakshi. Stop over reacting." Dev said, getting tired of her non stop repetition of the point that his mother didn't like her. "I'm over reacting?" Sonakshi screamed in disbelief.
"No, now you're just repeating my words." said Dev. Sonakshi scoffed at his sarcastic reply.
"Are you PMS-ing or something?" asked Dev. As soon as the words were out he knew he'd made a blunder. The daggers she shot at him made him want to crawl into a corner. She threw him one of her coldest looks and went and slept on the bed, facing away from him. He followed suite. He wanted to reach out and touch her, to apologize, make her feel better but he knew she needed to calm down before he could apologize. So much for never going to bed angry, he thought.
The next day she was gone before he woke up. She'd left him a note saying she was leaving early as she wanted to stop by her house to meet her parents before heading to the hospital. He sighed, he knew this was just an excuse to avoid a confrontation with him. She hadn't forgiven him yet.
After work, Sonakshi came home to find the house empty. Auntyji, I mean Maa, she mentally corrected herself, must've gone to that kitty party. She decided to make herself some instant pasta. The nutritionist in her frowned at the thought, but she shut her down. She was still upset coz of her argument with Dev the previous day, she was entitled to some comfort food. She hated fighting with him. She had been cold the entire night. She was so used to crawling in his arms each night and basking in the warmth his arms provided, she almost forgot what it felt like to sleep without him holding her. Once or twice she almost reached out to him in her sleep, but she would wake up and catch herself just in time. She missed him the entire day. She had sneaked past Dr Sinha's cabin when Dev brought Ishwari in for her medical check up. She felt strange sneaking up on her own husband, but she wasn't ready to face him yet. Perhaps, he knew that as well, since he didn't drop by her cabin to see her while he was at the hospital.
She was boiling water for the pasta when she heard a gentle knock on the kitchen counter behind her. She turned to find Dev standing there, six roses tucked in the curve of his arm. Extremely shiny roses, she noted.
"I'm sorry" he said, in his most adorable puppy dog voice and his eyes shining in a way she found impossible to resist. The face that made her want to hug him tightly. He knew the effect that face had on her and wasn't afraid to use it to his advantage.
She nodded towards the bundle in his arms, "Are those for me?"
"Do you forgive me?"
"I haven't decided yet"
"Neither have I"
It was difficult to resist him on her own. But when he played charming, it was damn near unbearable. Knowing she would just be prolonging the inevitable, she decided to save time. She turned back to the stove.
"I'm making pasta, do you want some?"
She didn't have to look at him to know he was grinning. "I would love some." His fingers linked around her abdomen as they both watched her stir the pot.
It was after he had taken it upon himself to get them both reacquainted with their bedroom and sleeping habits that he finally gave her the roses.
She sat up in bed, taking the sheet with her in a display of modesty he found endearing.
The stems were long, thorn-free and plastic. She fingered one of the six in her small hand, trailing up until she reached the gleaming foil of the rose.
"Flowers die, so.."
She peeled back the foil to discover a perfect chocolate rose. She laughed as she bit into it, her small teeth ruining the petal design. She offered him one, but he refused, sweeping the remaining flowers on the ground when he leaned forward to kiss her.
She tasted of chocolate and hope.
There were things they hadn't said, things she needed to tell him. But later, she decided when he reached for the sheet that separated them. There would be plenty of time later.
*End flashback*
Later, she determined with the onus of hindsight, had never come. He'd continued to ignore his mother's behaviour towards her, never taking her concerns seriously, always managing to make up for his behaviour by buying her a bouquet of chocolate roses or getting them tickets to a place on her bucket list. After this argument, he had surprised her with a week long trip to Paris, and she had kept quite.
If she were honest, she'd own up to being slightly pathetic. Was it better to be unhappy during the day, cherished at night, and silent in between than it was to be alone?
There were ways around it that didn't involve confrontation. She would ignore Ishwari's behaviour 9 times out of 10, turn a blind eye to it. Tried being a real life 'khargosh'...
*Present Day*
Sonakshi frowned on the bed, trying to concentrate before she lost the tenuous strand of something she knew she needed. It was there; elusive, but there. She told herself to think faster, to reach it before it went beyond her grasp. But the pressure alone was enough to push it over until the last vestiges were gone and she was left with an empty box and cluttered non-memories.

Author's Note : So that's all for part 5. This flashback was intended to give an insight into the relationship of Dev and Sonakshi post marriage, when they never really dealt with some fundamental issues. How Ishwari's acceptance but subtle resistance affected them as a couple. A clear communication gap. How this will affect the events that followed, you will have to find out as we move along the story. Hope you liked it :)I soo much wish ir is romantic..☺️
