Manish Wadhwa To Do A Cameo In Kituu...

Manish Wadhwa who shot to fame with his portrayal of the deadly assasin in Sahara One's Kohinoor, is now back on the channel, now as a terrorist, Kabir.

Manish will play a cameo in the 15 episode track that will see Kituu cover a story dealing with terrorism. "The character is absolutely negative! He's a terrorist that takes over a school. It's interesting," says Manish, who's now only looking at doing good characters in the main lead.

The show has a lot of extreme actions lined up, including paragliding. The track moves forward as Kituu goes to Panchgani to admit Antara and Anshu to a boarding school. As Prabhakar and Kituu venture out to cover a local fair, the terrorists capture the school, take children hostage and kill the principal.

This will be new territory for Kituu as a reporter and the amazing visuals of Panchgani is sure to keep the viewers glued to their television sets. The episodes will be aired from 12 June.

Amit Verma

Since my name is already so short, I don't have a pet name as such. My industry friends call me 'Amy'. I wish I had a longer name so it could be shortened to become my pet name.On second thoughts, 'Amy' sounds feminine. But I don't really object to being called Amy in public.

Yash Sinha
Late Friday night, Yash Sinha was accosted by two miscreants at Chincholi Bunder Road, Malad.

Sinha was driving back home (Malad) from Oshiwara with his cousins in the car, when he noticed two guys on a bike tailing them.

The bikers did not back off even when he entered his building complex nearby. Finally, he confronted them and some verbal volleys were exchanged.

This incident has left the television actor with an altogether different impression of Mumbai. "I have been in the city for over two years and had never experienced such a situation," says Sinha who is from Patna.

Night riders

"All this while I believed that Mumbai was a safe city but this has made me rethink. It was both scary and traumatic. It was not as if they wanted to rob me or anything but it was pure harassment; they were just doing it for sheer pleasure," he says. Sinha was in his Maruti Zen with his two cousins.

"They have been in Mumbai for a few days. One has come from Patna and the other from Delhi to pursue their studies here. Both these young girls had an early encounter with the ugly side of Mumbai."

Evening out

Sinha claims that he had taken his cousins for dinner at a Oshiwara restaurant. On their way back home at midnight just when he had entered the Chincholi Bunder Road, suddenly these two men on a bike came in his path. "They drove by our side passing filthy comments.

At first I ignored them but they continued their antics mouthing expletives. At one point, I swerved the car to avoid a collision. From then on they chased us.

Even when I entered the building complex, they followed me. I got off the car and asked them 'What was wrong?' They appeared drunk and after screaming and mouthing some more filthy language they went away. Due to the commotion the other residents were alerted."

After this incident, the security has been tightened in his housing complex and he plans to lodge a complaint with the cops to the effect.

"It proved to be traumatic to my young cousins and has made me wary of the city. I think the bikers were just some sick youngsters out to get some kicks in the night."

Shillpa back to work
By: Shaheen Parkar
June 21, 2006

Shillpa A Singh
After a five-year hiatus, model-actress Shillpa A Singh faced the camera again. She features in the Sahara One drama Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai as a schoolteacher and was part of the Panchgani location shoot of the daily.

Her character has been inspired by the one essayed by Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na. "It is the role of a glamorous music teacher dressed in chiffons," she says.

Does this spell that she wants to be back in the scheme of things? "Yes," says Shillpa who has lost oodles of weight. "After marriage and motherhood, I took a break."

Bani main Mrs India

She resurfaced in December last year when she bagged the Gladrags Mrs India contest.

"This is what actually had me going. In the past months I have been grooming myself. Kituu is my first step. There is a film song picturised on me in the serial. I am shooting now at Film City and there is a definite track of my character, Ms D'Souza."

Shillpa with husband Aashish and daughter Sunskriti
Shillpa is married to Aashish Singh, an executive producer with Yashraj Films. "He is presently working on Dhoom 2," she says.

While her producer father-in-law, K P Singh's films include Jurm, Hum To Mohabbat Karega, Pathar Aur Payal and Warrant.

After marriage, Shillpa decided to take a break. "I had a baby within a year of marriage. My daughter, Sunskriti, is now four years old."

Past work

From 1996-2000, Shillpa featured in serials like Aashiqui (Zee), Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon (SAB) and in the title role of Urmila (DD). Along with acting she also anchored shows like Jubilee Plus (Star Plus), Amne Samne Antakshri (Zee Cinema), Fitness Plus (Zee) and Pakwan (DD).

"I have also done numerous ad campaigns," she says. As Shilpa Kataria — her maiden name — she was the face of Parachute hair oil and Cadbury's 5 Star.

Shillpa, as the spelling of her name suggests, is also into numerology. "I changed the spelling myself," she says. She's also into tarot card reading and classical singing.

With a new portfolio and new look, Shillpa looks for yet another innings in the acting and modelling circuit.

Tarun Khanna

He has the charm, the looks and the attitude. Hes our Delhi munda basking in the sun of controversial glory. Hrithiks look-alike, Tarun Khanna has definitely benefited the most from the controversy over the Pepsi ad, although he is pleasantly surprised.

Although the promotional ad for Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, one of the Pepsi-ad series was his first, it hardly got him noticed. When his other campaigns with Pringle, Four Square and Maruti also did not get him his due, the Pepsi ad with Shahrukh Khan did the trick. Tarun declares, "As far as this ad is concerned, it is probably a sheer coincidence that I look like Hrithik. Also there has been no attempt to prove that Shahrukh is better than Hrithik.
How does he feel on being called a Hrithik clone? The answer came prompt, "Its heart-warming, but at the same time annoying, for I am conscious its my own look and I dont like to be compared to any one else." Good say, we say!

The Hrithik 'lookalike' on the Pepsi ad that spoofs the star's Coke commercial

Are you ever mistaken for Hrithik Roshan?
No, not at all! I have a better face.

Then why did you agree to do the ad?
What's wrong with the ad? Besides, I wasn't even told which Cola company I was shooting for. The only brief given to me was that I'd be shooting with Shahrukh Khan and I'd have to wear braces.

Why did you agree to wear braces?
It was just a character I was playing. If I join films I could be made to wear anything. Anyway, male actors are made to wear female costumes, which I think is more derogatory than wearing braces.

So, you aren't vain...
I'm basically modest but anybody into modelling is bound to be in love with himself.

How good was the money?
I cannot disclose that. But for a newcomer it was good.

Do you think Hrithik and his dad are overreacting?
They are not overreacting. Certain people with vested interests are instigating them.

Has the Pepsi ad helped your career?
I don't think a small ad can help anyone's career, although it has got me a lot of attention - magazines like yours want to interview me now. But no one said anything when I did an ad for Pepsi's Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani music album contest.

Would you mind doing a film with Hrithik Roshan?
I wouldn't, if my role and footage are equal to his.

If you wore braces in real life do you think you'd meet the fate of your ad character?
I don't think so, if a girl wanted to kiss me on the lips she would do it anyway. In reality, I do have a little dental problem for which I might need to wear braces when I join films.

What does your mom feel about this whole look-alike thing?
Everybody who knows me is surprised and angry at my being called a Hrithik lookalike.

The small screen is getting bigger. And not without reason. Long under the shadow of big brother Bollywood, the TV industry is no longer the second best in the entertainment sector. They are hungry for a piece of action, ready to fight and bulging in the right places — their wallets. According to an estimate, TV budgets have shot up by 40 to 50 per cent in the past few years.

"Today, there's no upper limit. With the competition increasing, the audience has to be tuned to quality products. And quality comes with a price," says Purnendu Bose, COO, Sahara One. The channel reportedly spent Rs 1 crore on the set of a news channel for Kittu Sab Janti Hai. Other channels, too, have jumped on the bandwagon. How else can one explain opulent sets, lavish production and innovative marketing techniques on the small screen.

Sagar Arts' Prithviraj Chauhan — Dharti Ka Veer Yodha is being hailed as one of the most expensive shows ever. The Sagars splurged a whopping Rs 6 crore to put up "opulent sets" in Sagar film city, Vadodara. Explains Prem Sagar, producer of Prithviraj..., "Showbiz is an escapist affair. People like to see rich and plush things on the screen. And we have no option but to provide that since we are not making documentaries."

Sagar further informs that it took him six months to complete the sets for his 200-plus episode saga. The same goes for Ravi Chopra's Viraasat, which will cost at least Rs 20-25 crores. "Be it a film or TV serial, no costs should be spared to create the look that it requires. I approach both on the same scale," affirms Chopra.

While Kaun Banega Crorepati set the ball rolling for big budgets with its rich sets and high production costs, no more can a producer afford to overlook the grandeur of his products. Sample this: the sets for Zee's Saat Phere and Kasamh Se have cost Rs 85-90 lakhs. Similarly, the set of Star's Kavyanjali cost Rs 50 lakh plus. Other shows towing the line are Baa Bahu Aur Baby with Rs 75 lakhs riding on the sets.

If fiction is about bringing the story alive with a realistic ambience, then the sets for reality-based shows too are matching global standards. The case in point being: KBC, Deal Ya No Deal, Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul, Heartbeat and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. hese shows require a lot of money, infrastructure, marketing and promotions.

The presence of celeb guests also throw budgets out of gear. Stars like Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Hrithik Roshan have already made a telly trek. But the question arises, does this glamour and glitz translate into high TRPs? "It certainly makes an impact due to its lavishness," says Ashish Kaul, senior vice president, Zee.

Soap queen Ekta Kapoor, too, holds that "good looking and expensive sets hook audiences and improve the production value" of serials. "But looks aren't the only deciding factor," she was further quoted as saying. Well, as long as it remains a treat for the eyes, viewers aren't complaining.

Arzoo enters Kituu Sab Janti Hai

From Sony's Ek Ladki Anjani Si as a conniving vamp(Tulika) to playing a negative character yet again in Kituu Sab Janti Hai where she plays an ambitious journalist. Arzoo Govitrikar's journey from films to television hasn't been long but has surely been a fruitful one.

Arzoo Govitrikar enjoys doing the vamp act!

Better known as model Aditi Govitrikar's kid sister Arzoo began her career with modeling followed by films like Enjoy and Dreams besides a few regional films down south.

"My character will surely add spice to the showI play Shweta; a US returned journalist all set to destroy NNN channel and Rohan Kapoor (Amit Verma) also she thinks that Rohan's father is responsible for her family's bad times. I took up the show because I can manage Kituu... along with Ek Ladki… besides I always wanted to work with the production house (Siddhanth Cinevision). ," chuckles Arzoo who started shooting from 27 June for the show and will be a part of the Sahara show for the next 50 episodes (two months).

The svelte actor also has an interesting track in Ek Ladki... which is essentially her claim to fame in tellydom. "I will have maximum scenes with Mohnish Behl for now. Mohnish turns out to be my ex-boyfriend and I try to kill him in the show," says Arzoo who is an engineer by profession in real life.
While the actor complains of no time for herself as she is busy running from one shoot to the other and working at a stretch for 16 hours a day.
Well Arzoo, all work and no fun would do no good...
