Tarun & Hrithik

Name Tarun Khanna
Birth Sign Pisces
Height 180 cms
Weight 78 kgs

Tarun Khanna came to be noticed after the controversial Pepsi ad and according to him this ad is lucky for him. Although the promotional ad for Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, one of the Pepsi-ad series was his first, it hardly got him noticed. When his other campaigns with Pringle, Four Square and Maruti also did not get him the needed recognition, the Pepsi ad with Shahrukh Khan did the trick. Tarun declares, "As far as this ad is concerned, it is probably a sheer coincidence that I look like Hrithik. Also there has been no attempt to prove that Shahrukh is better than Hrithik.

Tarun very much resembles Hrithik and according to him at times its quite annoying to be called a Hrithik look alike. Tarun has now focused his attention to showbiz and is making his debut appearance with a Mahesh Manjerekar film Tere Pyar Ki Kasam, which also stars Sunil Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary and Hrishita Bhatt.

Ami Trivedi (the small screen's Kituu) has a younger brother, Karan, also an actor.

Karan does Gujarati theatre, as well as dubbing. "He, too, wants to do television, but before that, I have told him to put on weight. He is too thin and looks very young," says the doting sister.

Phone family

In the last few months, Ami has barely met her brother. She shoots almost everyday for SaharaOne soap, Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai. "As the shoots are at various locations, we keep in touch via phone. While Karan stays at our home in Marine Lines, I stay with my uncle in Andheri. It is convenient for my shoots."

Karan has featured in Gujarati plays Goodbye Gomti and Best of Luck, and also dubbed for the Hindi version of the Harry Potter film, titled Potter aur Aag Ka Pyala.

"I am doing a lot of dubbing work. I also have to complete my TYBA," says Karan. "Due to our work schedules and timings, Ami and I mostly catch up on the phone."

Their father, Gujarati theatre director Tushar Trivedi, is currently in London — he is the director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and has been in the UK for four years. "My mother, Jaya, is also in London. So the family keeps in touch through the cell phone. I speak to my father almost everyday," says Ami.

That rare day off from shooting means catching up with Karan. "I make it a point to go home and spend the day with Karan and friends."

Everyone's happy

But she always wanted to be an actress, so there are no regrets. "My dad was not too keen that I take up acting. He wanted me to be a professional — like a doctor. After my schooling at Manav Mandir, I joined Jai Hind College. I even appeared for the Common Entrance Test (CET) for medical admissions. Eventually, I did my BSc, with physics."

The television world is starkly different from theatre, "So Kituu was a whole new learning experience," adds Ami who has featured in Gujarati plays, like Mahapurush, Life Partner and Ek Aakarshan Ajnabi.

"Now, of course, my family is very comfortable with my acting on the small screen."

Ami facts

Began as a theatre artiste in father Tushar Trivedi's Gujarati play, Maa Baap when she was only nine.

Bagged the title role in Manish Goswami's Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai through auditions.

Actor Tarun Khanna has struck a double whammy with 'Kituu Sabb Jaanti Hai' and 'Mahi Ve' writes Sudipto Chattopdhyay

What took so long to get a break?
I think I was a bit immature when I stepped into this industry. In the five years of my television career, I did get a few good roles. But I was waiting for something big to come my way. Somehow I couldn't go to producers asking for roles.

Tell us about your projects.
I am excited about 'Kituu, Sabb Jaanti Hai'. I am playing the role of the programming head of the news channel where Kituu is the journalist. The character of Yuvraj is very strong. But at heart he is very soft and there develops a love angle between Kituu and him. I am also playing the lead, Kuljeet, in 'Mahi Ve'. He is a family man. I think I can fit into any character and want to explore various genres.

Do you regret leaving your family business?
I can go back to my father any time and join his business. That option is always open for me. But I want to be a self-made man. I know I can speak well, act well and look good. So there is nothing to get depressed. I will definitely make it to the top.

Are films on the agenda?
I will do films if there are offers. But to me both the mediums, television and films, are fine. I want to keep my cool and not accept whatever comes in my way.

What are your other interests?
I am a film buff. I watch films from all over the world. I can watch 'Pather Panchali' with equal passion as 'Chachi 420'.
I am a great fan of filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. I also like to play chess and exercise. I am a black belt in karate.

Yash Sinha
Double trouble on the sets
Monday, June 05, 2006 | Television

Actor Yash Sinha suffers a severe nose punch and a nerve pull, both within 48 hours

Sapana Patil Poojary

Yash Sinha plays the role of cameraman Prabhakar in Sahara One's Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai. His job often involves saving his journalist colleague Kituu's life during dire situations. But this time, it was Sinha who suffered mishaps and that too in real life.

On Friday, the cast and crew of the serial were on an outdoor shoot at Panchgani. They were filming a track in which school students are hijacked by terrorists and Kittu (played by Ami Trivedi) and her cameraman are on an assignment to cover the children's rescue.

"We were shooting this adventure sequence in which terrorists are being killed. In that particular scene, I had to grab a terrorist's gun and he was supposed to bring it near my face in a threatening manner. But in a fit of over enthusiasm, the actor playing the terrorist used such force that the gun hit my face with a thud," says Yash.

"My face was hurt, but my nose had taken a worse beating. There was a cut on it, and blood oozed out. The pain was searing. I could almost feel my nose falling off, but thankfully it wasn't that bad. I applied some antiseptic and continued shooting. If you watch closely, you will notice patches on my nose," he says.

Could Ajay be more accident-prone as he suffered another injury the very next day? "A chase sequence being shot in the rains and the ground had turned slippery. During the shot, I slipped. This pulled a nerve in my left thigh. The pain was excruciating and I realised what cricketers go through when they experience a hamstring. I was advised rest. But when we actors hear 'action', we simply roll. We can't set the schedule haywire with our injuries," says Yash.

Shubhaavi's friendly quotient with Vidya !

Doesn't one find a striking resembelence between the talented TV actor Shubhaavi K and Vidya Balan of Parineeta fame? As a matter of fact, both the spirited gals initiated their innings on TV with Balaji Productions and have showered maa ki mamta in ad films. With time, Shubhaavi and Vidya have graduated in terms of qualitative work. Personally too, they share a common friend and keep in touch as and when possible.

"My good friend, Lin is Vidya's friend too and when I met her two years back we hit it off instantly. In fact, while shooting for Parineeta, Vidya called me and applauded my performance in Kyunki... ," says the striking actor who is maha excited about her new look and role in Kyunki… which is getting bitchier by the day.

The grime behind the glamour

We tend to see the tele-stars' lives as glamorous. But only a few realise the grunge that lies behind the label, says SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY after visiting the sets of SaharaOne soaps in Mumbai

While most of the workers are asleep on the sets, we catch the lead actress awake

LISSOM THREESOME Niyati Joshi, Ami Trivedi and Manasi Salve in their reel get-up

Feeling more disheartened at the huge divide between the grunge and glamour of the telly-world, we make yet another visit, this time to a studio in MIDC area, where yet another serial of the channel, Kituu Sabb Jaanti Hai is being shot. The scene here is even worse, nowhere near the thrill of television. Since morning, there has been a power cut in that area and so, all the actors, in their reel get-up, are waiting for the return of electricity. While most of the workers are seen sleeping on sofas, chairs and even on the floor, we catch the lead actress, Ami Trivedi awake.

"Sorry, it is very hot in my cabin. No power," she says by way of greeting. Having arrived on the sets at 9 in the morning, she is game, along with the others, to grind through the heat till 10 p.m. in the hope of the lights coming back. "When you can't shoot for some other reason, at least you have the comfort of sitting in an air-conditioned room," she says.

She wants to do other serials too, but like most tele-actors doing dailies, she has no time to spare. The best thing, though, is that none of them are found complaining. Well, such is the pursuit of popularity!
