Dance is now a viable career option: Mansi Agarwal
Mansi Agarwal

Says young choreographer Mansi Agarwal in an interview with TOI

She's in news for her much talked about song bharat mata ki jai in Shanghai. Delhi based dancer choreographer Mansi Agarwal is now busy doing choreography for Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che. She was in Ahmedabad for the shooting. Mansi has been learning Kathak for many years. Talking about her foray into films, she tells, "I belong to the Jaipur gharana. At a performance in Delhi, Anurag Kashyap first noticed me. I then did it choreography for Gulal and Dev D. However, Dev D was released first."

How easy was it for her to move from the world of classical dance to the glitz and glamor world of films? She says, "It has been smooth and nice. Gulal was not your typical masala film. The story had a political touch and that made it really challenging to work. I did research to understand the context and took help from lyricist Piyush Mishra." She adds, "I have enjoyed working with Anurag Kashyap. There is enough freedom to work on one's vision. I also enjoyed doing the Bharat mata Ki Jai song. The song has become quite popular. It's a very nice feeling when the song becomes a hit." Ask her about what makes a song click so far as choreography is concerned? "I feel there has to be a sense of synchronization. You can't make an actor do steps which just don't go with the character he's playing in the film," she says.

Mansi feels that now songs have become prominent in the promotion of films. She says, "As Indians we connect to dance and songs. Filmakers and production houses have realised the importance of songs even while promoting a film. A nice song captures immediate attention."

Ask her about the changing perception about dance in India now and she says, "Today dance is being looked at as a viable career option. A number of dance based reality shows on television have generated much interest in dance. But one needs to do lot of hard work. Television is a wonderful stepping stone to start your journey in the entertainment world. Reality shows definitely give you your share of 15 minutes fame. But you need patience and talent to make it big in this industry."

Does she think that learning kathak has helped her in adding finer nuances to her film choreography? "Yes. Kathak has given me a sense of beat and rhythm. Being a trained dancer helps me in understanding visual elements of songs too," says Mansi who loves to paint and write poetry.

Ask her whom she would see dance to her rhythm? She says, " Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor. I also love the way Farhan Akhtar dances. He's natural." Among the actresses, she finds Madhuri Dixit Nene and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan really gifted dancers. She also finds Parineeti Chopra quite talented.

Her all time favourite song is Dola Re Dola from Devdas. "From a choreographer's point of view, the song was a real delight. I love Prabhu Deva and Vaibhavi Merchant's work. For any choreographer, Farah Khan's song Pehla Nasha is always an inspiration."

Mansi is also writing a film script and she clarifies, "No, the story is not about dance or dancers."

Best friends Ishaan, Omi and Govind – young, ambitious and restless – are trying to make a mark in the India of the early 2000's. These are exciting times – a new millennium has just dawned, India's a nuclear power and ostensibly shining – a perfect place for the 3 Ahmedabad boys to start a business that could be their ticket to fame and riches. In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India's next sporting superstars! What follows is without doubt the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams. Based on Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel "The 3 Mistakes of My Life", Kai Po Che (meaning a triumphant yell in Gujarati) is an unforgettable ode to friendship and the magical moments one shares with one's closest pals – celebrating festivals, drunken dancing, watching cricket matches together, strategizing on how to catch the attention of the cute neighborhood girl, being there to watch each other's back in troubled times and to celebrate one's successes by screaming "Kai Po Che"!

I have not quit television..

We know fans' it has been a
long, disappointing and dreary
road without some Sushant
Singh Rajput action on the tube.
Sushant has a personality and
magnetism that turn his fans into
fanatics.
The actor decided to opt out of
Pavitra Rishta (as Manav) on Zee
TV where he was romancing his
real life belle, Ankita Lokhande
(Archana). Currently, he is busy
shooting in Gujarat for his film
Kai Po Che, directed by Abhishek
Kapoor. The flick is based on
Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3
Mistakes of My Life.
"People loved me as Prem (Kis
Desh Mein Hain Meraa Dil) and
then as Manav (Pavitra Rishta). I
just hope and wish that they love
me in the movie as well," shared
Sushant with Tellychakkar.com.
So has he quit television? "No I
have not. Medium is not that
important for me. The role
should be good. I will be busy
shooting for the film for the next
two months. After that if I get
any good offer which suits my
interest, I will definitely get back
on television," he went on to
state.
He is away from his better half,
Ankita, so is he missing her? "Of
course, I am. I have moved on
from Pavitra and she is still doing
the show with equal love and
conviction, it is something great
and commendable. She is a very
fine actress."
Finally he gave this message to
his fans, "Thanks a lot for being
with me and keep loving me
always."
Sushant, all the best for your
movie!!!

'Kaipo Che' begins shooting in
Gujarat

Chetan Bhagat pranks followers
on Twitter
A film based on the book - Three
Mistakes of my Life, Kaipo Che
begins to shoot at various
locations in Gujarat...
Filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor who
is making a film on Chetan
Bhagat's popular novel The Three
Mistakes of my Life - Kaipo Che
has started shooting for the film
in Gujarat with his cast. The
shooting took place in Vadnagar
and many areas of the old city in
Ahmedabad. Along with him,
Sushant Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav
and Amit Sadh were present for
an interaction with the Gujarati
audience in a 5-star hotel a few
days back.
Abhishek has chosen Gujarat to
shoot for his film because he
thinks Gujarat as a state has
great potential for picturesque
locations. The entire cast had a
great time sampling Gujarati
cuisine and bearing the extreme
heat in the various areas of
Gujarat while they were
shooting. Slated for release in
January 2012, the film 'Kaipo Che'
has a Gujarati title and Abhishek
reasons that he is not reluctant
to give it a Gujarati title because
it adds novelty and gives a
reason for other states and
people in the country to make
that effort to understand the
Gujarati language and culture. He
says, "Why not? People are
making films with different
ambience and so I thought my
film should explore the Gujarati
ambience."
Sushant Singh Rajput who
catapaulted to fame with his
acting in Pavitra Rishta, a popular
show on Zee TV and later quit
the show, is also hoping that his
B-Town debut in a meaningful
film like this will give him the
edge. Ask him about how he is
reacting to the show not
working well after he exited and
he says, "I am unhappy because
my girlfriend Ankita Lokhande is
still in the show and would want
that the show works for her."
With Gujarati locations, exploring
the Gujarati ambience, now
Gujarat is definitely the preferred
state for filmmakers for shooting
their films
