Long before Rock On! happened, filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor acted in a couple of films. He made his directorial debut with Aryan which did not make it big at the BO. But destiny took a different turn for Abhishek after Rock On!. He attributes this to his gut feeling and the conviction to follow his heart. Now, he's working on another project, which is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's Three Mistakes of My Life.

What made you pick the book to base your film on?

The book has romance, humour, entertainment. But I am not an opportunist and don't make a film thinking of only the commercial point of view. The book has more cinematic potential than any of Chetan's other books. And the fact that the book was based in Gujarat also meant a new ambience and a new story that filmmakers had not explored before. I have changed almost 50 per cent of what is written for the film ( Kaipo Che).

The film is set in Gujarat...

See, I don't want to sound like I am promoting tourism in Gujarat, but the state is so rich historically. And there are enough stories which have been done on North Indian and Punjabi culture. Gujarat is no less passionate as a state. There are enough stories hidden somewhere in the remote areas of Gujarat. I don't care about industry trends and what works in films! The Gujarati spirit, the kind of patience I see in people working in this tremendous heat, is something that needs to be applauded. The government here is helpful unlike other cities where for small things we would have to move from one department to another.

Do you feel that you are taking a risk with a fresh cast in the film? The percentage of TV actors making it big in films is very low.

Farhan (Akhtar) was completely new to acting when he did Rock On!. It's not about TV or films - it's about the conviction that you can make a person act. Sushant (Singh Rajput) has great fan following while Rajkumar (Yadav) is a very talented actor. Star kids make their Bollywood debut without any training, at least I have auditioned my cast.

People will have great expectations from you after Rock On!...

A lot of people are cynical about filmmakers trying new subjects. When I was an actor, I felt powerless and dependent on producers and had to act according to the market forces. Even when I was making Rock On!, people said, 'Oh so now you will make a film on music?' It is easy to make a typical Bollywood film with an item number and foreign locales, but today if you take that out from a film, do you feel those films have good plots? As filmmakers, our job is to go with our conviction.

Do you feel that movies that make 100 crore are doing so only because of star power and good marketing?

Movies that have raked in 100 crore at the BO could have perhaps made 250 crore, had their scripts and plots been stronger. Unfortunately in Bollywood today, people are not interested in the shelf life of a film. They are interested in paying a scriptwriter only if there is a big star in the film, and when the film works they don't want to pay the scriptwriter enough saying that it is the star that makes the film.

So are you happy that you are able to make films with conviction?

Yes. I am not bothered about playing by the rules of the game. But tomorrow if my film does not work and I am in the dumps, it will not bother me.

Two television actors are moving to the big screen. Sushant Singh Rajput, 26, and Amit Sadh, 31, will be seen in the on-screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's third novel 3 Mistakes Of My Life.

Rajput, who is popular as Manav in the TV series Pavitra Rishta, plays Ishaan, a cricket enthusiast. Sadh, who made his debut in Kyun Hota Hai Pyaar on Star Plus in 2002, will essay the role of Omi, the confused son of a Hindu priest.

Rajput has also signed an international film Roaring Silence. Sadh, who was last seen in Ram Gopal Varma's Phoonk 2, will also be seen in Kabeer Kaushik's crime thriller Maximum.

I'm not afraid of failure: Sushant Singh Rajput
Sushant Singh Rajput
Who's not allured by the glitz and glam of the big screen? A transition from television to films is what most actors look for in today's time. And Sushant Singh Rajput is no different!

In looking forward to exploring greener pastures Sushant is much aware of the risks involved in taking a big leap from TV to films. A confident Sushant says, "I have worked for four years in theatre, two years in TV and now at 26, I am doing my first film. I think it is just the medium that changes as an actor. You remain the same, you either work from your heart or you don't," says Sushant adding, "Just doing good work matters to me. I might be doing TV or theatre, movies, for that matter open a canteen in a film city, or work on my short films. I don't have the fear of failure."

Sushant, who left stardom and the hefty paycheck that TV gave him, says, "I left college when I was a topper. I got sponsorship from the government to study, but I did what my heart said, moved to Mumbai and lived with nine guys in a room. I like to put in efforts only where my heart lies. I had never planned my life - I never knew I would be able to buy my own house, car and have a good bank balance," says this Delhite.

On a lighter mode, the actor says, "I just want to learn in life. Once I succeed in whatever I am doing, I switch to something else. I am in the process of making myself a Ferrari - I want drivers to drive at 300 kms/hr!."

Revving up with a different look with a new hairstyle and six packs, he says, "I just got the six packs by chance. My film's character does not belong to a rich family, and so I had to look lean. I maintain my physique by playing three hours of cricket in the morning. I do cardio and functional exercise for one and a half hour. I eat eight meals in a day, but I maintain a strict diet - I eat boiled food with no salt and oil."

Quiz him whether he too thinks that the general assumption in B-Town that TV actors are over exposed to the viewer really affects their chances in films and says, "I am lucky - my timing was correct. I was a highly paid actor, and it takes lots of guts to say no to that kind of money. After I left Pavitra Rishta, I said 'no' to nine films but it wasn't easy. My character Manav worked in a positive way for me and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 was one step up for me as it completely changed my image."

Talking about his film, Kai Po Che, Sushant says, "It took me only 40 minutes to say yes to this film. I was excited when I got to know that I would be working with Abhishek Kapoor whose vision and energy are inspiring."

He is in Ahmedabad since almost a month and he loves the street food available here. "Although it's very hot here, I occasionally enjoy gorging on aam ras and pani puri here," he smiles.

Sushant's love for short films is profound. The actor has recently "completed writing one - Incredible Decibels. I am working on two other concepts - an abstract love story called Subway and an untitled thriller story based on Stephen King."

Talk to him about his love, Ankita (Lokhande) and Sushant smiles, "Ankita is my support and strength. I would have never imagined working in Pavitra Rishta without her, and the way she is continuing the show with same love is remarkable."

Kai Po Che! gets what Bond couldn't

Mumbai, May 16 -- Afew months ago, rumours were rife about Hollywood superstar Daniel Craig shooting part of his new Bond film, Skyfall, at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad. Apparently, the film's production team including director Sam Mendes and production assistants visited the place for a recce. But it's believed that they didn't get the necessary permissions to shoot in the Ahmedabad suburb that is home to Mahatma Gandhi's iconic Sabarmati Ashram.

But what James Bond couldn't achieve seems to have been attained by the Kai Po Che! team. Director Abhishek Kapoor's crew has received the permission they need to shoot in Sabarmati. They may also shoot around Gandhi's famous ashram. Apparently, a sequence involving a cricket match will be shot at Sabarmati stadium.

"Our line production team got the requisite permissions within a few days of applying for them. We were very keen to shoot there. Since the story is set in Ahmedabad, what's better than Sabarmati to show the rich culture of the state?" asks a unit insider.

Kai Po Che! is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel, The Three Mistakes Of My life. When contacted, Manish

Hariprasad, creative director, Disney UTV (the producers of the film), confirms: "Yes, we will be shooting in Sabarmati, in the stadium as well as in other places in Gujarat. The administration has been very supportive in giving us permissions to shoot in the best of the locations. Besides, the locals have been helpful and welcomed us as their own guests."

The film stars TV show Pavitra Rishta's Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh of TV serial Kyun Hota Hai Pyar fame and Rajkumar Yadav of Ragini MMS fame.
