6.30 am, Dec 4, 2007
Shah Mansion
A groggey eyed Milind woke up to an incessant ringing of the phone. He picked up the handset of extension in his bedroom. He had been awake way past, scrutinizing documents received from his overseas partners and nail certain technical issues, before the US technical team arrival for a sight visit on Dec 8th. Just when he got done with tackling the work front, he got thinking of ways to update his father of the happenings. Worry knawed at him like acid and he had no idea how his Baba would tackle this precious DIL's ultimate betrayal and how the disillusionment will take a toll on his frail health.
Just when he thought, his worries could not have gotten bigger and excited Sukriti's thrilled shrill – 'Bhabhi' came across the line, which was jarring to ears early in the morning. Blandly, Milind answered Prachi's unavailability opting to disclose everything in person. Sukriti totally unawre of the happenings, informed Milind, that she would drop at the Shah Mansion later in the day and disconnected the phone.
Milind could not go back to sleep, instead, he turned on his lap top and went back to his numbers. An hour later, a hot shower made him feel more human to tackle the work cut out for him for the day.
As Milind, put the car in motion, a taxi turned into the drive way effectively blocking his exit. He stepped out off his car to give the driver a piece of his mind, when he saw his father alight from the rear of the taxi. His Baba and his friend had come back 3 days earlier than scheduled. The elation of seeing his Baba earlier was totally marred by guessing how his Baba would react to the train of events that had transpired in the last 3 weeks. He gestured both the men to come into the house.
Baba: 'Col, meet my son Milind and Milind this is my pal Col. Shekhawat.'
Col. Shekahawat: 'Ab to Aman bula, (At least now call me Aman), all my life I have answered to Maj., Col and commander. My parents gave me a wonderful name – Aman and now that I have been retired for a while, I would like to be addressed by my name. Young man, it is Aman Shekhawat'and it is a pleasure to meet you. "
Baba: (Chuckling) Your name is AMAN (it means peace) and you have been fighting wars. This is irony personified.
Milind: (Was amused to see his father in such an upbeat mood) It is my pleasure Aman Uncle.
Col Shekhawat : Yeh hui na baat. I like your son. Nice looking lad. Ab teri bahu se bhi mila Chander.
Baba (Chander): Milind beta, proceed, I wont keep you any longer. I will introduce Aman to Prachi. Come on lets go in. Prachi, Prachi ……………
Milind wished that the earth would split open wide and swallow him right then and there, so that he would not have to face this situation. But invariably, time and again, he ended up being the designated messenger of the bad news and the crutch on whom everyone leaned on. Lugging the luggage, he followed the older men into the house to face another bout of emotional upheaval.
Baba: Ganu, I am calling for Prachi and she is yet to make an appearance. Where is she? Has she gone to the market this early? But it is the time for breakfast, where is everyone?
Gkaka's silence and a pale looking Premlata's awkward stance, had Baba's intuition up and running,
Baba: What happened? What is it you are not telling me? Where is Prachi….. tell me nothing is wrong with her or is she in any danger?
Milind: Prachi is not here.
Baba: What do you mean she is not here? When is she expected? When I called here a few days ago, they said that she was going to join you at Delhi? So what happened?
Milind decided to take a chance and come clean with his dad. He would have preferred to do this without an audience, but even if his Dad had made an appearance as planned on the 8th, it still would have been status quo. Grabbing the back of a chair, he narrated to his Baba the sequence of events. Milind's senses were at red alert. As he narrated, Milind kept an eye trained on his father. He was expecting a calamity to drop on him.
Surprisingly, Baba remained calm and looked at him with dead eyes.
Baba: Tell me something, as per your story, the whole thing seems to have been an Ayesha project.
Milind: I am very greatful to her for unearthing the whole charade and bring it to our attention.
A gasp at the hall doorway diverted everyone's attention. At the door a shocked Sukriti dropped all the colorful bags she was carrying.
Baba: (Turning towards Sukriti) Mmmmm…….. I am guessing this is news to you too. Milind, let me tell you something, You have the wrong person.
Milind thought to himself, 'Here we go again, another Sir Galahad to fight to restore Prachi's honor.'
Milind: "How do you say that Baba?"
Baba: I have always been proud of you my son, and your achievements. But even you have your shortcomings. You never see the evidence that is right in front of you. This shortsightedness is going to cost you big time this time.
Milind: "How so? I have the DNA Reports, the birth records and Prachi's silence which only proved that she was guilty. I am glad that I did not get too attached to the child, otherwise, she would have palmed off her lover's kid and given that child my name."
Baba: "Even if that was true, would it have been such a bad thing, legalizing a child by giving him your name, when that child is already been labeled as illegitimate. What was that child's fault? He did not choose his parents. I maintain by my earlier statement, you did miss out on evidence that was staring right in your face. Maybe you need to be spoonfed, come on, come on all of you, I will show you that my Prachi is not the mother of that baby"
Baba led the party to the family room that had a collage of pictures on the wall. He stopped at the section where an 8x10" Shah family protraint hung & also pointed out to latest 13 X 11" portrait picture of Prachi with Hritik.
Milind: "Ok, you have a point to make, just don't lead us to random pictures and leave us high and dry. Is that your proof'?
Sukriti never recovered from the scene that unfurled in front of her eyes. Her mother's heart yearned to see her son after her 3 week honeymoon. Saket had dropped her before proceeding for work. For Hritik, she had shopped at every boutique and toy shop. Now she had lost her child and her pillar of support – her Bhabhi. Bhaiyya was not in any frame of mind to hear anyone. The tirade with Baba was indication enough.
In the meanwhile, Ayesha who had returned from Pune late in the night came down for breakfast. The last 15 minutes drama was unfolding in front of her eyes and she wondered how Baba was going to prove Prachi's innocence.
Ayesha (thinking to herself): 'Hardly do I bury her, someone has to dig her out. But this time, Baba, she dug herself too deep down, even you can bring her out. Once the ink on the Mishra divorce papers dries, it will be final nail in the coffin. I don't need anyone of you, I have the one person in my corner, no one else matters. Milind, she sighed inwardly, you will be finally mine.'
Baba: Ok…..ay (mimicking Milind's tone), look at the pictures, do you see anything familiar. Particularly Milind, this should have been obvious to you – but lets see if you can see it even after I point it to you.
Milind was absolutely clueless, yet he thought if he talked, something might trigger his memory.
Milind: 'I know this first picture was taken during last year's Navratri. I was here at the Shah Mansion trying to pin down Alaap Shah, but instead of I got hit by princess Prachi since she could not hold on to her Dandiya stick. You have to give credit to the photographer and his profiency in his art. He has brilliantly captured her vibrant orange saree with black gold jardosi embroidery. Her eyes reflect a calm and purity which astounds me considering the depth of deceit that has sprung forth out of her 5.2" frame. And flanking her on either side is Daadi and Soumya. The second row it is Inder Shah, Maa and Saalesaab - Alaap. This picture is not telling me anything, and I am moving on to the second picture. What do you say Baba - Kya picture hai, maa bete ki. Kitna sundar lag raha hai, Hritik hai na. And see how cute, apni Maa ka mangalsutra ke saath khel raha hai. Aur Prachi – look at her, doesn't she look gorgeous. This was my gift to her and Hritik's black athletic tank bodysuit was again picked up by me. Dekho, dekho. Look both of them are sporting broad smiles at the camera. You know who is behind the camera, it was me standing there capturing this picture. What an idiot I am, visualizing to expand my family. I give up Baba, nothing is obvious to me.
Baba: Just as a I thought, totally blinkered. Let us talk a little about the background. Hritik just turned 1 year a few weeks ago. That means he was born a year ago. Prachi would have looked like a house before her delivery. Now this family picture – note the date since it has been clicked around the same time. Does Prachi look remotely pregnant? Look at this picture when Naren Mama visited from Australia. That picture was taken with Prachi 10 days before Hritik's birth. Does she look anywhere close to being pregnant? I have seen upclose how pregnant a women looks when she is ready to deliver. I had seen Nandini carry both you and Sukriti full term. Secondly, I was here at the Shah Mansion the last week of October, if you remember, because Indersaab had to finalize the bonus payments. I saw Prachi at the house on a daily basis. Son, someone has gone to great lengths to protect the real perpertrator here.
Baba went towards Premlata: "Sambdhanji, how come you never defended your daughter more strongly? How did you stand and watch Milind do something like this and get away with it."
Before Premlata could answer
"Ok here is the next clue. Look at Hritik. If your naked eyes don't help you, here are my reading glasses."
Milind very condescendingly obliged his father by accepting the glasses and went closer to examine the portrait. The child was perched on Prachi's arm and the child's forearm was facing the camera directly. On closer examination of the arm, under the grainy matt finish of the photograph, he could see a mole that resembled the shape of a tiny raisin. That mark looked very familiar. And suddenly it struck him, he turned around
Milind: Baba, he is your child. How can he be your child? You have such a mark on your back. But how can be it?
The audience gave a collective gasp at the allegation leveled by the son at the father. But Baba was thoroughly tickled.
Baba: Thank you Milind. Well I will give you full marks for observations. Now that you have established that this is my child, apparently Prachi was protecting me and my family's name. Would it be such a hardship to give your name to your own brother Milind?
Milind was perplexed his Baba was going way out the way to protect Prachi. And then there was this mole thingy. "Are you OK Baba? Look, when Ayesha first pointed it out to me, even I did not believe it. But this is reality, I did not mean for things to come about in this way. How are you going to contradict the DNA Report."
Ayesha intervened: 'Baba you have no idea, that deceit she would have palmed on Milind. I am glad that I was able to flush out all the lies and bring it all in front of you. Baba, even you have to agree, I have Milind's best interest at heart.
Milind: We have to be thankful to Ayesha, without her, I would have been taken for a ride forever.
Ayesha could not have gloated enough. She smirked at all of them almost thumbing her nose at all. Milind had supported and approved of her.
Baba: Ayesha, I never thought my son needed you to flush out anything between him and his wife. I understand you are his friend and you will always have his best interest, but is Prachi's best interest in your heart. You being Neevs wife, or in this house is an indicator that her best interests are the last thing in your mind. Would you like to dispute that?
Ayesha had nothing to say and could not fathom how to respond to that. She sputtered tyring to think up a coherent response.
Baba: Yes…. the DNA Report that you are so sure about. How can science be wrong here. But you know the report can be easily trumped up. Anyway I am not blaming you Ayesha, if it sounded like that.
Ayesha: I did not need to do any such thing. I just took the hair samples from Prachi and Hritik's brush from the Master bedroom and submitted it to the lab.
Baba: Oh subterfuge, lovely Ayesha. By the way Milind, have you ever used Prachi's brush.
Milind looked at his Baba. The old man was way over his head.
'Yes as a matter of fact, I have for the past few weeks, I have borrowed my wife's hair brush. So now you are telling me that I am the father.
Baba: Don't be so touchy son, I don't need to jump to conclusions. Well coming to the point. Ayesha, can you now confirm to me that the sample used was Prachi's hair or Milind's hair. Now the question is which hair sample matched up the DNA sample? As of now there are 2 known contenders whose hair was on that brush.
Milind was exasperated, but his mind was racing with possibilities.
"Yes I know, it could be Neev's. He could have used Prachi's brush. I have caught them numerous times in very compromising situations. I agree with you, if I could have used Prachi's brush, so could Neev have used it. And as luck would have it, the lab also picked up the right sample – Neev's.
Baba's laughter boomed in the hall.
"This is priceless. I wish it were true for your sake, to hang on to the illusion of your wife being unfaithful to you. Milind, you have blamed the butcher, candlestick maker and the baker. But still you are barking up the wrong tree."
Milind: Kya baat hai Baba, how come this chit of a girl came to matter to you so much, that you are going out of your way to protect her. In the process you have taken the blame on yourself. You almost convinced me that I could have been the father. This is sheer waste of time. All the evidence points to her and you still are trying to defend her. Now next you will tell me that Sukriti is the mother since she spends a lot of time with Hritik and is also attached to him.
Baba: (turned around and looked at Sukriti) Is she or isn't she?
Sukriti cringed against the wall unable to accept or deny the accusation. Her father had figured it out. She shut her eyes fully and braced herself. It was indeed payback time for and that too with interest. Well what did she have to lose now. She had lost her son, her ally Prachi Bhabhi and will lose all the relationships that were dear to her after her confession. She had lost her dad's approval a while ago. It was only a matter of time, before Milind and Saket would also disapprove of her. She was going down, it did not matter if the water was over a foot over her head or 10 feet. She was sinking fast, she might as well get around telling the truth. At least she would be free of this overwhelming fear.
