Colaba, Mumbai, India
Milind stepped into the express elevator, punched in 20. He stepped out on his floor to find office populated with skeletal staff. Dah, it was Sunday, what was he expecting?
Milind did not have anything pressing, but he did need privacy to set some investigations in motion. Firstly he wanted to see how much money was siphoned off by his wife from his account, since he had entrusted her with this no limit debit card, few weeks ago. That would also give him an idea of her movements by the transaction trail. He wanted to get in touch with Bhiku, his childhood friend who was now an Insp. Paranjape at Koliwada Chowky.
He started to dial out for Prem Khurana, chief accountant, but stopped. Instead, he whipped out his wallet and slipped out his card. He flipped the card and dialed the customer service number listed on the reverse. Within seconds, he had the customer service representative. Milind shot off his card details and requested for all transactions over 3 weeks beginning Nov 20, 2007. The continuous clipping of the keys that he could hear indicated instant processing of his request. Of course with a no limit debit card, the service better be instant. The lady on the other end, requested him for an email address or fax to transmit the transaction list. Milind rattled off his email id. The call was terminated by the CSR promising to send him the report within the next 10 minutes. True to her word, his mail box indicated receipt of a new mail. Milind pounced on the message and clicked it open. The attachment containing the transactions was now open. The first 2 pages had all the Delhi transactions which were pertaining to the conferences. Milind rolled on to page 10, and all the transactions were conducted by him. For the entire period, he could not find any transactions made by Prachi. How the heck was she surviving and that too with a baby.
He cursed himself. "Abhi saala tu uski vakalat karrela hai. Idhar se paisa nahi nikala to, Neev se liya hoga".
(Damn, even now I am trying to defend her. If I am not the source for money, then of course Neev would have been the provider"
He next dialed Bhiku's number.
Tere se kaam tha. Office mein aaj aayega kya? Nahi to phir .......
(Can you come over to the office. I needed to talk to you. If you cant make it today, ..... then how about .......")
Insp Paranjape was instantly alert to his friend's urgent request. He could not leave the investigation on hand, but agreed to drive down to Milind's office by 1 in the afternoon.
Milind pulled out all his conference notes and started reviewing the plans, the numbers, the new requests by the partners. He faxed out all his notes on the project to his legal consul Mhatre to incorporate all the clauses in the JV agreement. The operating agreement which was a simple 50 page document, had seen countless amendments and reiterations in the last 2 weeks. Annexures, Appendices and Addendums were being added and it was becoming challenging to keep track of the changes. He passed on instructions to Mhatre and requested to forward the changes to JV partners. Milind somehow chugged through 2 hours with great difficulty. Unable to concentrate, he went out for a walk. He wandered aimlessly through the crowds without keeping track of time. At half past 12.30, his watch beeped an alarm. Milind came out his reverie and started retracing his steps to the office. He knew was a stickler and was known for his punctuality. Stepping out of the elevator, he found Ins. Paranjape aka Bhikhu seated in the visitors lounge leafing through a magazine.
Milind let Bhiku inside his office and locked the door, which Bhiku found very strange. He thought to himself. "Yeh open door policywala, kya raha hai."
(what is he doing, why the secrecy, he is usually an open door policy man"
Milind very haltingly narrated the whole incident. And requested Bhiku if he could trace his wife and child as a personal favor. If Bhiku came through, he could pacify Daadi and Maa and ease their minds. He cursed Prachi for being irresponsible and worrying the two old ladies.
Bhiku heard the whole story and was puzzled. The pieces did not add up. After getting to know Bhaabi, she did not seem that scheming type. He asked if Milind was successful in tracking any financial transactions on his credit card. When his confirmed his suspicions, he knew something was amiss. He tried pointing out to Milind of a possible misunderstanding, which only aggravated Milind no end.
Milind, "Sab log tum, yehi natije par pahonch rahella hai. Ki koi misunderstanding hai. Tu bol mereko, DNA report jhoot bolta hai kya. Ayesha yedi hai kya. Tum sab lok ussiki side lena. Ayesha barabar boli, yedi bana rahi hai sabko. Woh barabar thi, SHYAA, sabko yeda banaya, aur mujhe Yeda No. 1."
(All of you think it is a misunderstanding. Is the DNA Report a false one. Is Ayesha stupid to produce a falsified report. All of you want to only support that Prachi. Ayesha was right, she is making a fool of every one of you. She was right.... Shyaa, she made all of us look like fools and me the king of fools")
Bhiku said, "Chal Accha, ek baat bol, mereko thode details dena. Pahila Neev Shergill, baap ka naam, us lab ka naam jahan DNA testing hua. Aur kya ---- un teeno jagahon ke naam aur pate - Church, Anathalaya aur us hospital jahan bachcha paida hua. Koi contact person/s in teeno sanstaano ke"
(OK I need a few details, firstly - details of Neev Shergill, the name of the lab where the DNA testing took place. And what else ......... the names of the 3 places and address - the church, the orphanage and the hospital where the birth actually took place. If you have a name, it would make my work a little easier.)
Bhiku almost blurted out the need for more skin and hair samples for both Prachi and the baby, but refrained himself. Instead he said that he would be dropping in at home – of course in plain clothes in order to minimalize suspicion and go through some personal effects of Prachi
Bhiku, "Aur ek baat, main is mamle mein tehkikaat kar raha hoon, yeh kissiko bhi pata nahi hona chahiye. KISSIKO NAHI MILIND. Bol wada karta hai kya. Jitne log kam jante hain utna hi accha hai. Bata Baba kab aa rahen hai ? 8 tareek na. Main Rashmi aur bacchon ko lekar aa jaoonga 4 shyaam ko. Mujhe bahana bhi mil gaya aur meri tehkikaat bhi ho jayegi aur kissiko shak bhi nahi hoga. Aaj to vardi main hoon, baat to failegi, tu bahana bana de ki, tune kissiko dhadak maari and main aaya tha tehkikaat karne."
(I want you to promise me, that you will not let anyone know that I am working on this case. I mean it - not even a soul should know about this. The fewer know my involvement the better. Tell me when Baba gets back -8th. Alright, I will come down with Rashmi and the kids. It would be a pretext to meet and I can get some investigations out of the way without arousing any suspicions. Today I am in uniform and people are going to talk. You have to let everyone know that I had come investigating a traffic violation')
Milind found it strange but did not want to hamper his friend's investigations and agreed to keep silent. Bhiku further prodded Milind with more questions to get a better grip on the background and all the players. Bhiku's years of training and prodding paid off as Milind rattled off details right from the time when he first met Prachi. More than 2 hours had passed by, all Bhiku did was hear his friend and at the same time, the consummate law keepers brain was chugging in the background.
Aye yay yay yay yaa – Ayesha. Bhiku had not much cared for Ayesha. He was sympathetic towards her. He even admired her grit to get on with life. Her experience in life had toughened her and had shaped her the person she was. But after hearing Milind's story, he felt that she did need some serious intervention, because it did not bode well for her mental equilibrium. He had seen glimpses of her going berserk over minor incidences. He recollected the one instance when Milind spoke to Rashmi, the femme fatale of their chawl. Ayesha's rage was unbelievable – she almost ruined Rashmi's face by hurling a bottle of acid. Rashmi had been very lucky, because as the bottle of acid torpedoed towards her, Bhiku had slid in its path with his newly assigned Maruti Gypsy. His 'Vahan' to this day bore the brunt of that attack. There was a gaping hole in the canvas. He could only imagine what would have happened to Rashmi, had he not come. At that time, they could not prove a thing, other than the fact that the bottle slipped from Ayesha's hand. Only he and his wife knew how cruel Ayesha's intentions were. But all had turned out just as well. That day had marked the end of her femme fatale role and she dorned the role of Mrs. Rashmi Paranjape within 6 months. Now a mother of his 2 kids, she still made the young lads stop and swoon when she climbed down the stairs.
Cursing his meandering brain, he got back to the subject matter. He thought of paying a visit to Ayesha. Maybe the intervention had to come through him without her knowing of course.
He took leave from Milind and suddenly turned around
and said, "Main pass kiya IPS. Ab Civil Services ka result wait kar raha hoo"
(I got through the Indian Police Service exam, I am awaiting the Indian Civil Services exam.)
Milind was delighted for his friend. "Abhi bol raha hai, pehle kyon nahin bataya. Main to bakta raha, aur tu kuch nahi bola"
(Why didnt you let on earlier ? I have been loading all my worries to you and you did not even say a thing?"
Bhiku, "Mere liye tune bahut kiya re, aaj thoda to tere liye karne ka mauka de"
(It was my turn today, you have done so much for me, give me some chance to do the same for you)
Milind, "main samjha nahin, lekin itni badi palti kaissa mara tu?"
(How did you decide so quickly to move to the other side??")
Bhiku, "Yeh decision to Rashmi ke liye tha. Array kafi khatra hai is line mein. Rashmi ne dus saal mera saath diya. Bahut dari dari rehti thi jab night duty aur special operations par jaata tha. Kuch kehti nahi thi, lekin mereko pata chalta tha. Ghar aane tak jagi rehti hai. Agar mereko kuch ho jayega to uska to koi nahi hai aur phir ooper se do bachche. Kaisse manage kar payegi. Isliye kafi sochane ke baad, who boli ki exam likhne ko. Do saal tak hum dono - miya biwi ki raat paali chalti thi. Meri masterni hai woh. Aura ab dekh na, yeh exam pass kiya, aur saath main maloom na, Chintu bonus ke mafik paida hua teen mahine pahile. Agar civil service ka number lag gaya na, to aur bhi accho ho jayega. Is kaam se hamesha ke liye chhutti mil jayegi. Par dekhte hain."
(This decision was solely for Rashmi. There is a lot of danger in this line of work. Rashmi has stood by me for the last 10 years and every time, I have to go out on special operations or covert assignments, she is petrified. She has never said anything so far, but I do feel her anxiety. Till I come back in one piece she is never at peace. And if something really happened to me, she has no support whatsoever. She is all alone and she will have 2 young ones to think about. It has me worried as to how she will manage if something had to happen to me. Two years ago, I remember, we talked long one day and she decided for me to take the exam. Both she and I got around preparing for the exam. Almost every study session was night duty. She was my teacher and guess what everything worked out just as well and I had my second son as an unexpected bonus. If I get through in the Civil Services Cadre exam, I will bid goodbye to this line of work for good. I am keeping my fingers crossed to that"
Edited Part III some more to add a few more dialogues. Enjoy
Part IV
Paranjape walked down the building, pocketing the photograph in his top pocket. As he exited Milind's office, he slickly swiped Prachi's photograph from the photoframe on Milind's bookshelf. First things first, he had to know more about Neev Shergill.
He called Solanki , "Arre Solanki, is Neev Shergill ka kuch record hai kya. Suna hai bade baap ka beta hai. Jitna information milega utna accha. Jo bhi information mile, report mein dalna. Choti se choti information bhi – OK. Doosri Baat Ek photo bhej raha hoon tumhare cell phone par. Naam hai Prachi Mishra - saare railway station, airport, bus stand, taxi stands ke contacts ko phone karo and yeh photo transmit karna, ki kissi ne isse dekha hai kya. Haath main ek saal ka bachcha hai. Teesri baat, - main tumhe teen sanstaano ke naam de raha hoon. Jeevan Naksha- DNA testing facility hai, Church of All Saints and Mother Mary Orphanage ke Mother and Baby Care nursing home. In teeno sanstaano ke pate, contact numbers aur unke top admin officer kaun hai, saari jaankari mujhe kab de sakte ho?? Kab tak milega report, ------ ek hafte mein ???? 7 din – Solanki bahut urgent hai request. Itna urgent ki yeh report I would have preferred for submission yesterday. Ab samaz ayee baat."
Bhiku walked to his Gypsy and drove to Genetica – the crime lab, the police used to get DNA tested. He swiped his ID card to get thru security and walked to the bank of elevators. He made is way up to the 11th floor to the DNA and fingerprinting lab. Geeta the expert came out of the sterilized lab.
Geeta, "Mumbai ka Don, Bhiku Paranjape is bhool bhuliyya mein kaisse?
Bhiku, "Geetadi, kuch sample lekar aoonga. Us par tumhe hi kaam karna hai, kissiko delegation – not acceptable. Btw it is not a recorded case, but a personal favor. Jamega kya ????"
Geeta, "Di bolta hai aur kaam karata hai. Tujhe maloom hai, kitna backlog hai. Aur ab off the record request ??? Trivedi pakdega na meri naukri ja sakti hain aur teri to khair nahi. Mmmmm chal accha, ho jayega, par tu saste mein nahi katega, kya ghoos khilayega??"
Bhiku: "Khane par aaja raat ko. Aaj to Sunday hai, Rashmi ka Sunday ka routine tujhe nahi pata kya ??"
Geeta : "Mard ke maafik bola na, kaam tera, ghoos meri, lekin ghoos deniwali teri biwi. Kya bola tereko, tu saste mein nahi katega, barabar. Ghar aaoongi tab detail mein boloongi. Teri help chahiye, Chal bhaag yahan se, nahi to Trivedi ka koi jasoos dekhaga na, to meri to waat lagegi."
Bhiku thought two people in a row. He had heard things happened in three. Who was going to the 3rd person that he will agree to help today. He drove to the Koliwada police chowky, parked his Gypsy. He ran into the chowky, opened the documents cupboard pulled out a paper which had numerous numbers. He quickly photocopied the page and relocked the document. Picking up the copy and his empty lunch box, he put on his leather jacket, glasses and helmet and started his motorcycle. Even with Sunday, the traffic was murder, but he reached home 40 minutes later. Prathamesh his oldest ran down the from the 1st floor of the chawl as his father rode in. Prathamesh just leaped into his father's waiting arms to be seated on the fuel tank of the motorcycle. He started honking the horn, which brought Rashmi and chintu onto the balcony. Bhiku thought to himself, that sight of his wife always drove fatigue from his body. She came down with the baby and Bhiku drove his motorcycle through the chawl gallis to give his children their routine mini ride.
Rashmi watched her husband play with the kids as she made the tea and upma.
Bhiku, "Aga aee, Geeta aanewali hai khane par"
Rashmi, "Abhi, aaj, pehle phone karne ko kya ho gaya. Acche se khana bana deti na."
Bhiku, "Woh to akeli hai, to tu dal chawal bhi degi to khushi se khayegi. Anyway khane mein kya hai aaj."
Rashmi, "Maine aaj sirf Khichadi Kadi banaya hai. Bahut kantala ayaa to jyadabhi nahi banaya."
Bhiku, "Wah ri patni, aaj mein itni good news laya hoon, aur tu mujhe kichdi khilayegi."
Rashmi stared at him, "Pass ho gaya tu, haila, sacchi. Chal sab kuch cancel kar, hum sab Mahalaxmi hokar Siddhivinayak hoke aate hain. Dev paavla re"
Bhiku: "Kal challenge, promise. Aur bhi baat karni hai tujhse. aant taareq ko main jaldi aaoonga, Milind ke yahan jana hai."
Rashmi: "Main nahi aati, tu jaa"
Bhiku: "Dekh Milind ko bura lagega, aur tu Baba se mil lena. Dekh main hoon na, kya karegi Ayesha."
Rashmi: "Dekh, Milind se baat karna kafi bhari pada tha, ab uske ghar jayegi to, soch woh kya karegi. Ab to mere do bachche bhi hai, us yedi ka kuch bharosa nahin"
Bhiku: "Milind bahut pareshaan hai, Prachi 10 dino se ghar mein nahin hain. Koi pata nahi laga ab tak. Mere dost ki madat karne mujhe jaana hai. Tum aati to kissiko shak nahi hota. Issiliye bola chal, aur agar tu Baba ke saath baat karegi, tho Ayesha ka dhyaan tere par rahega aur mein meri jasoosi aasani se kar paoonga."
Rashmi: "Prachi nahi hain ghar pe ??? Ghar ki beti ghar ke bahar aur woh bhi bacche ke saath, yeh log jab paissewale ban jaate hain to kya hota hai re inko. Koi kissika dhyaan kaisse nahi rakta. Aur who Milind, kya kara raha tha. 10 dino tak biwi lapata hai….. aur haat pe haat dhare baitha hai"
Bhiku: "Chal andar ki kholi mein, puri story bolta hoon. Bilku film ke maafik hai re. Aur mujhe thode batate aur kaande de. Kaat ke deta hoon. Batata aur kanda bhaji saath milke banate hai. Story bhi boloonga tujhe, tere saath time bhi bitaoonga and teri madat bhi ho jayegi…….mmmmmm……. what, idea accha hai na….. bolti kyon nahi tu, aisse kya dekh rahi hai ………Aeeee Kya bolti tu."
Rashmi: "Kya Main boloon. Chance marne ka achcha idea hai. LEKIN ……… mujhe koi aitraaz nahin. Achcha lagta hai, tu itna khayal rakta hai to."
She grabbed hold of him at the collar of his shirt and dragged him into the andar ki kholi.
By 7.30 both Bhiku and Rashmi had made their bhaji's and had time enough to make gajar ka halwa as dessert. Bhiku also brought her upto speed on the afternoon events and his plan. Bhiku called the grocery store in the baajoo ki galli, who delivered Vanilla icecream home pack for Prathamesh. He went out of the balcony and called out for Prathamesh and told him that the SRGMP little champs had already started and he would miss Tanmay's performance if he did not come in soon. Prathamesh came home bounding to catch his favorite contestant on the show.
Geeta made her appearance a little after 7.45 pm. She tried to play with either of her nephews but was unable to draw either of them. The older was glued to the TV screen and the other would not leave his mom's lap. Bhiku pulled open the folding table and started placing the place mats, coasters, plates, katori, glasses and cutlery. Geeta joined Bhiku in the kitchen in warming the food and passing it on the table. Rashmi in the meanwhile picked up Chintu and proceeded to the partitioned section of the room to nurse him. By 8.30, Chintu was fast asleep, and Prathamesh's shoved his food as he watched his favorite contestant Tanmay croon Rock & Roll Soniye from the movie KANK. As the show drew to a close, Tanmay had slid from an upright position to a prone position. Rashmi came out lifted her first born, washed his hands and rinsed his mouth and laid him down on the mattress next to Chintu's cradle.
The adults were now free to eat with no interruptions. The next half an hour, the three carried on conversation mainly pertaining to the Mishras. Bhiku told Geeta he would get her the samples at the lab on 8th evening itself as the lab was conveniently situated on route the Shah Mansion. As dinner concluded, Rashmi got the halwa and ice cream out. As she served, she heard Bhiku's phone ring.
She stopped everything to see if he was going to leave on an assignment, but was relieved to see that he was talking to his junior Solanki.
Bhiku: "Abhi de sakta hai mujhe tu, aaja,……kya khaana nahi khaya, teek hai aaja, main khilata hoon na tujhe, ……arre ekdam jhakaas - ghar kar khana. Itni mehnat karke mere liye tu information laya, aur main tujhe khila nahin sakta. Kitni der mein ayega ? Haaan….. niche khada hai, phir aa na oopar."
If looks could have killed, Rashmi would have killed Bhiku then and there. She had just finished putting away the left-overs. Now she had to remove everything from the refrigerator and warm the food.
Solanki::"Bhabhiji, khana garam mat karna, main aisse hi kha loonga. Roz mess mein khane ki aadat hai. Yeh to taaza ghar ka khana hai aur mujhe zoron ki bhook lagi hai, bas khila dena. Main ab paanch minute mein khatam karke, aap logon ko dessert ke liye join kar loonga. "
As Solanki wolfed down the food on his plate and went in for the seconds, Bhiku opened the file folder that contained all the information.
Bhiku: "Sala yeh to ekdum clean hai, Shergill. Dekh iska baap jyaada masti karnewala hai. Pata nahin kaun baap hai aur kaun beta. Aur yeh mahashay hain apne Ayesha ke pati. "
Rashmi: "Bechara, gaya kaam se, ab tak to vaat lagayee hogi"
Bhiku: "Dekh Ayesha ne usko talaak ka paigaam bheja hai, who bhi aaj hi. Solanki, kamaal kiya re toone. Ekdum up-to-date information laya re tu. Aur yeh kya, yeh to apna Father Breganza hai, woh nahi kya apna Karjat kya Badlapur mein ………hain na ??…. woh All Saints Church and Mother Mary Orphanage, udhar ka paadri hai who. Kal jaake baat karega. Aur guess maroonga main, kissine bhi Prachi Mishra ko nahi dekha right. Chalo teen main se do ka to kaam ho gaya. Teesre ki taraf dheere bhadenge. "
The party dispersed. Solanki agreed to drop off Geeta and Bhiku and Rashmi retired in their kholi along with their kids.
