The Church of All Saints
Karjat
Sub-Inspector Ajay Solanki stood outside at the gates of the Church of all Saints. He looked intimidating in his police uniform. He asked for Father John and was led by a serene Sister.
Father John: Yes Inspector what can I do for you.
Solanki: I have a favor to ask of you. I will get straight to the point. I am trying to investigate this case which involves a child being adopted from this orphanage. The child was born in the hospital, I believe is your sister concern. If you can shed some light, it will be very helpful
Father John: I will try my best.
Solanki pulled out a copy of Hritik's DOB certificate and a copy of the hospital records that indicated Prachee as the mother and the copy of adoption papers in the name of Prachee. He narrated to Father John about the facts of the case that did not make sense. He showed photographs of Prachee getting engaged 5 days after the date of the so called date of birth on the Certificate. He went on to show Prachee dancing at the Navratri function on the date of Hritik's birth.
Father John was very thoughtful for a while collecting his thoughts and let out the whole story. Finally
Father John : You realize that I am bound by my vows of secrecy. These vows are not only my professional vows, but they are my personal ones too and that to, to my maker. I hope I am helping the law here and the lives of all the people involved. Hope you know what your are doing with this information. I have had Mr. Alaap Shah come in here asking the same information. Since I had specific instructions from Mrs. Mishra, I dodged him. Then a few days ago ' there was a Mrs. Ayesha who came here in the guise of wanting to adopt and ended up running away with the birth register for last year. Then there was a Neev Shergill wanting to know about Prachee. I managed to intervene before vital information was passed on by my staff who are unaware of the circumstances revolving around the case.
An elated Solanki with his findings assured the father of total secrecy. As he started his motorbike, he called his boss Paranjape to give him an update. So engrossed was Solanki the he missed an oncoming Jeep and ened up being hit by the jeep.
The watchman from the church witnessed the accident and had medical assistance in no time from the Mother and Baby Care Nursing home. Solanki was patched up before he was dispatched to Sancheti Orthopedic Institute that handled complex accident and fracture cases. Within no time, they ran X-rays and blood tests and the Dr. Patil decided to operate on him quickly. As luck would have it, the theatres and staff were available to get the procedure underway within no time. With no close relative, he signed the Medical Indemnity form and was wheeled into the OR. The sterile atmosphere was a little daunting, but the anesthetist was very calm and administered the dose of anesthesia that felt cold as it flowed thru his veins. A few seconds later, he could feel a metallic taste in his mouth. The anesthetist asked him to count and Solanki could not remember counting beyond 30.
After 5 hours, Solanki was wheeled out of the theatre and into a ward. It would be atleast another 6 hours before Solanki would come out of the effects of the GA (General Anesthesia).

Solanki groggily became conscious of his surroundings. He pressed the bell to call for assistance. A nurse with a ward boy came to his room. All his vitals were quickly checked. He recollected the days events and wanted to inform Paranjape of his plight. But he felt so drained that, he fell again into a dreamless slumber.

It was well past Solanki's reporting time. Bhiku called his cell phone always getting his voicemail. He was concerned. It was unlike Solanki not to call or pass any information. He called Kamble ' the hawaldaar and asked him to drop by at Solanki's house. Kamble had returned with no news. The last Bhiku had heard from Solanki was a missed call around 2.00 pm yesterday. There had been no message. He decided to give him another 8 hours before starting a full scale search. He had to also call Milind and confirm their visit at the Shah house today. But before that he had lots of things to get done.
At 1.00 pm Bhiku found time to make a quick call to Milind. And that too from a bathroom. For heaven's sake, he thought, if anyone were hear him, he would be ridiculed for the rest of his life. He got Milind's voice mail and left him a message.
Arrey Milind yaad hai na, aaj shaam ko main family ke saath lekar aa raha hoon.
(Milind, I hope you remember, I am going to come to your house today at 5.00pm along with Rashmi and the kids.)
He called Solanki again but encountered again his voice mail. He left him a message requesting him to cover for him that afternoon, since he was going out with his family.

Colaba, Mumbai
Milind: How is 8.30 tonight for you.
Bhiku: Sounds good. I am working overtime, since my lieutinent did not turn up. I am severly short handed. I will catch up with you later. I will see you at 8.30 tonight. Bye for now.

Pawan Shankar was glad to get his laptop back. His computer was infected with a virus. It had taken him more than 2 days before it was returned to him by Salil ' the local HP service guy. To make matters worse, Rajni, his right hand at the office was down with hepatitis and would be out of commission for a while. He had no time to even visit an internet caf' to check his email. He found he had a 100 messages to respond to. It took a while to wade thru the messages. He thought it was interesting to see the update from Chinmay Pratap's office. CP was very result oriented and he had a nack to zero in on what was required of the client. He knew he would hit it off with this guy. If only if the guy would make an appearance. Anyway Neev would be one happy man to see this. He left a message for Neev to call him back. He was also satisfied with the outcome of the Delhi two cases. He had won one and the other case the prosecuting lawyer was considering an out of court settlement. Pawan was not sure how he was going to deal with that, but at least he could shut these cases for a while. The loss of not having his laptop for the last 2 days was amply made up with positive updates on his cases. He logged out of his account and went down to get some fresh air on Bhandarkar Road.
7.30 pm
Milind grabbed his Blackberry device, his cell phone and his set of keys and set out for home to meet Bhiku. It took him 40 minutes to get home. He had less than 15 minutes before Bhiku made his appearance.
The doorbell peeled at 8.35, and in walked Bhiku. Chander Mishra was glad to see Bhiku.
Bhiku: How are you? How is your health? I should not even ask, you look good to me.
Baba: I am good, you look good too. This uniform really suits you. And congratulations, I heard you got thru IPS ans ICS exams. And I also hear that you are favoring the latter.
Bhiku: Thank you. Yes I am leaning more towards civil services. I should be posted soon.
Baba: Come sit down and have dinner with us.
Bhiku: No Baba, Rashmi will be waiting for me. I am fine and I just dropped by to say hello'.and'
Bhiku's phone buzzed in his pocket. He excused himself and flipped open his phone. The screen displayed Solanki's phone. He gestured to Milind that he wanted privacy and Milind led him to the library cum study situated down the hall.
Bhiku: Kahan hai tu, kabse try kar raha hoon. Teek hain na'..bol
Where are you, I am trying to get a hold of you since this morning. Are you Ok'.
Solanki: Boss, I am in a fix.
Solanki ened the call after updating his boss of his findings at the Church and his accident.
Bhiku felt awful and very guilty. Since Solanki went on this assignment at his bidding.
Stepping out of the study, he rejoined everyone.
Milind: Chal tujhe ghar dikhata hoon. (Come I will show you around)
Bhiku: Maybe not this time, next time when I come with Rashmi and the kids
Milind: Arrey yaar, this wont take more than 5 mintues.
Baba: Go Bhiku, it should not take long.
Milind and Bhiku went upstairs. As soon as they reached Milind's bedroom, Bhiku quickly extracted a pair of gloves, picked up Prachi's hairbrush, toothbrush, an extra set of Hritik's clothes, the baby hair brush. He looked through Hritik's stuff to see if he needed anything and was quite satisfied with his specimen stash.
Milind: Chaar din pehle Baba achanak aa gaye '' aur Aate hee unhone Bahu ke baare main poocha' aur tujhe main kya boloon''uski vakalat karne lage. Pata hai us din kya hua'''''.(Milind recites his confrontation with Baba)''..Shaaaa, sab nautanki hai sala. Mere side per sirf Ayesha reh gayee hai, joh ek sacche dost ke tarah meri khushi ka dyan rakhti hai.
(Four days ago, Baba came home suddenly with his friend. Hardly did he step into the house, he asked for Prachee, and what can I say, he started defending her. I will tell you what happened that day '..(narrating the 4th December incident)... Everyone is a drama king and queen here. The only person who looks from my point of view is Ayesha, who has been a true friend, looking out for my interest)
Bhiku: Ek muft ki salah deta hoon. Police mein hoon, to kehna nahi chahta, aam aadmi kafi emotional hota hai aur swabhawik hai hona in halaaton mein. Aur tum mere friend atyant bhaavook bahut jaldi ho jate ho. Jitna sayyam apne business mein rakhte ho, ratti bhar agar non-business baton mein bhi rakhoge to doosron ke nazariya ko dekhna asaan ho jayega. Aur kabhi kabhi jo dikta hai woh sach nahi hota.
(I am in the police and I have seen that under such circumstances a common man does get emotional and it is natural that he will. And you my friend, if you exercised a fraction of control and equilibrium that you are so famed for in the business circle in your personal life, then it will be easier for you to see things from other person's point of view. And sometimes what you see is not the truth)
Milind: Main samjha nahin, tujhe baat ko itna tedha bolne ki kya zaroorat. Seedha bol na.
(I don't understand, why don't you tell me straight, why are you trying to beat the bush here)
Bhiku: Nahi, Milind, mujhe 4 din ki mohlat de. Yeh lab test ke baad, main tujhe bolta hoon ki kya maajra hai. Chal mujhe ab chalna chahiye.
(Give me 4 days to get the lab results and then we will see. I need to get going. )
Bhiku took leave. He was disturbed, but he had a task on hand, deliver the samples to Geeta asap. The information and results from Geeta would go a long way in proving Prachee's innocence. Concrete proof with his findings would make a solid argument to put forth to Milind. Bhiku made a small detour to Genetica and handed over the specimens to Geeta and soon was on the way to his home.

Ok I read the last three updates in one go. I must say your writing definitely reflects an Alfred Hitchcock style. The entire investigation is so perfectly narrated it seems we're following some criminal series where the crime is slowly unfolded and the culprit just about to be unveiled.I hope Milind comes to know the truth soon,I believe words cannot explain how much I like your writing.Update soon. 😊
