a very big thanks for all who have read so far what i have written and passed on their feedback.

For those who have a hard time getting the Mumbaiyaa Hindi, translations are in blue. I think I am almost done with all the translations, bear with me. I am neck deep in work and am having a hard time to continue further.

Secondly regarding the translation, I will try for a word to word translation. But it is hard to do that since the punch gets lost in translation. Please do bear with me.

And thanks for all those PMs. I will get to them over this long weekend and hopefully I will have another instalment for you to enjoy.

Thanks once again, take care 😉 😉

Part VIII

Sukriti mustered every ounce strength she could and unglued herself from the doorframe.

Sukriti : Bhaiyya, please don't talk about Bhabi like that. I have something'''..

Milind: Don't you dare open your mouth to defend your Bhabhi. I have had enough for one day. I don't need to listen to any of you. Go home and be with your husband.

Sukriti: But Bhaiya, if you could just''..

Milind: Just what Sukriti, listen to you crow your Bhabhi's goodness. Yes, my implicit trust in her has led me to this stage. Nobody is thinking of what I am feeling, every one of you seems to be defending that Prachee, who had no qualms lying to us. I am your son Baba. Instead of consoling me, you are here defending her - you have no idea how it hurts. But you know what Milind Mishra is done being hurt. I know who is on my side and who is not.

Baba, remember as a kid I used to watch Karamchand, I am tempted to hand over to you a carrot and title you as the Karamchand of this household. On that note, I am excusing myself so that you detectives can carryon his investigation to come up with another improbable defence in your DIL's favor.

Sukriti cursed her fate ' what a day this had turned out to be. She wanted to confess and defend her Bhabhi, but was told to keep away. She unhinged herself from the threshold while the whole drama unfolded in front of her eyes and walked towards her father.

Chander Mishra found his younger child walking towards him with wounded and helpless eyes. He had tried to break it to Milind, but obstinate that his son was, would not heed anyone. Very soon, he would have to become the rock to console his son, when the truth would explode in his face, but the present called for bolstering his daughter ' Sukriti. His daughter ' his pride had dealt him a crushing blow with her affair with Alaap Shah. He had not forgiven her for her folly and had not spoken to her. He felt that somewhere in his hurt and disappointment in his child, he had failed his duty as a parent In the last hour, he realized how alone his daughter must have felt not knowing who to turn to when she was expecting Hritik. He thanked the lord for looking over his daughter during her pregnancy and bringing her out of childbirth unscathed. But his daughter did carry a big burden on her shoulders.

Sukriti ' I am so sorry Baba. I was way deep in it. I am paying for my obstinacy. Both you and Bhaiyya warned me, but I would not listen and look at me now. What am I going to do? I was ready to confess to all of you about Bhabhi and Hritik. I am scared ' the truth is going to hurt a lot of people. But I don't know how Saket will react. I really love him, I confided in him before the wedding, but he does not seem to know. If I open up to him, he is going to think, that I cheated and did not tell him the truth before the wedding. Bhaiyya's trust is so implicit that the truth will be very traumatic for him. I did not know how to approach you with anything. With your health being so precarious, it was hard for me come to you with anything. And what I did was unpardonable. I crossed my limits not knowing what it was going to cost me. I have already lost my best ally ' Prachi Bhabhi. What I did is unpardonable ' but can you find it in your heart to forgive me.

Baba ' Hush my child, we will take one step at a time. Now, since you decided to confide, I need to know the whole truth. I was your best friend at one time and was privy to all your thoughts. Don't you think it is time to resurrect that relation? It has been eclipsed for a while, but it is there behind all the murkiness of disappointment and hurt. What do you say Suku? I would like my daughter back.

Sukriti ' Thanks Baba, I would love that.

Sukriti hugged her Baba and cried noisily against his chest. Chander Mishra held his daughter as she broke down, consoling her. Col Aman Shekhawat felt an intruder watching father and daughter make up. He slipped past both into the garden giving them privacy.

Baba supported his daughter and slowly walked her to her old room. He rested his back against the headboard and held his daughter.

Baba: Can you tell me what is going on? I have an idea what Prachee has done, but there are certain pieces of puzzles that I don't know of since I was not present here. I need you to put things into perspective and fill in the gaps. You can start off by telling me how you managed.

Sukriti elaborated her pregnancy story and concluded how Bhabhi had found out about the baby during the picnic. The goal had been to hold Alaap in abeyance, but with Ayesha wanting to ruin Bhaiyya and Bhabi's relationship had used it as a trump card to drive a wedge successfully. Sukriti also narrated more details about Bhaiyya and Bhabhi's relationship and Ayesha's constant efforts to undermine their relationship. She went on to say how Prachee had left the house earlier and had come back with Baba. She then told Baba how Bhaiyya had asked Bhabhi to remain in the house and continue their marriage charade. Sukriti confided in Baba that she felt at some point, Milind started to fall in love with his wife, but Ayesha had been instrumental in creating upheavals all the time and most of the time successfully. Sukriti further told Baba about their escapades at the Orphanage while adopting Hritik and the name switch in the records at the Nursing Home, and then Bhabhi hiring Kamini to bring Hritik into the household.

Baba listened to it patiently to his daughter. He knew that he must have done something really good in his life to be gifted with a DIL like Prachee. With a serene smile on his face, he laid his back against the headboard and let the feeling of gladness seep through his system. He hoped his calm flowed through to his daughter who was traumatized. He needed to move things and had to get in touch with his old cronies in the army to track his DIL. He was going to collect on all the favors. But that would be another day.

Part IX
Dec 4, 2007, 6.30 pm
Shankar & Associates ' Law Offices
Nariman Point

Pawan wanted to just finish and get out. He had been at work since the crack of dawn. The 2 appeals at the court had gone through smoothly. He dialed out his Private Investigator Chinmay Pratap's cell phone (hereinafter referred to as PI - Chini).

'You have reached Chinmay Pratap ' I am not available, please leave a message and I will get back to you asap.'

Pawan: I never get you, don't I? I have worked with you for 5 years. You do a fab job everytime, but I have yet to get you talking to me at least once directly. Why does it have to be this machine all the time? 5 years of association does warrant some face time..... once at least? Huh ' I know you are listening''.. No reply'Ok I get it''.. like every time, I get the silent treatment for giving you all business. Anyway, here is the deal. I have certain leads for a new case. It is a divorce case. I need to you get me details on the following. I will be tracking certain leads that you should know, but you need to start off with the file that I will be sending you shortly. They are photographs of certain people ' gather every kind of information. I am interested in any information that you can provide about these individuals. I need the report in 3 weeks. And I will remit the payment as per your requirements. I am heading out to Pune tomorrow on a business trip, I will be back in a fortnights time. You can send me your progress report midweek. You have my contact numbers, let me know. I will get in touch with your secretary and hand over some more details after my business trip.'

Pawan: God now I have to talk to that frumpy secretary of his. He is never visible, at least try to keep someone more attractive at the front office.

Two floors up the same building in Nariman Point, Chinmayee Pratap keenly listened to Pawan's voice message.

Chinmayee had started the detective agency 5 years ago. She had studied, apprenticed and acquired the degree of a licensed Private Eye. She opened for business, but had no patrons. A female private eye was not the convention. She realized that it was a man's world, hence the birth of Chinmay Prakash, an absentee boss. And very soon, Chinmay Prakash was the most sought after name in town. Chini had no complains. She thrived on her work. She did not mind that her alter ego took all the credit while she did the dog's work. But it amused her no end. She was dying to thumb her nose at the world, but she knew that if she opened her mouth, she would be back to where she was 5 years ago, swatting flies in an empty office.

A ping from the computer indicated an incoming email. Chini came out her reverie and switched to her bank of computers to open the file that was sent by Pawan Shankar. Interesting guy she thought. He was one of her earliest clients and a nosey one at that. She had lost count the number of times he had sent invitations to various siorees and she had ended up going to every one of them as her boss's representative. But that did not stop Pawan from stopping the invitations, in fact it made him more determined to get a glimpse of the elusive Chinmay Pratap. He devised innovative ways to get in touch with him. Little did he know that as the adage went ' Behind every successful man, stands a woman! God it was so true to her case.

She browsed through the file and jotted down all the people's profile that Pawan needed. The list included members of the Shah family, Shergills and Mishras. Wow, the man had a talent for getting the most notorious and high profile cases. Well good for her agency. She decided to start off with the Shah's and proceed. Well tomorrow promised to be a long and a busy day. She grabbed her purse and keys to her Kinetic Honda and stepped out for the day.

PART X
Dec 5, 2007
7.00 am
Divyalakshmi Apts, Mulund (W)

Chini stepped out of the shower to don a linen drawstring pants and a white T-shirt. A pair of tinted glasses and cap completed her outfit for the day. Chini grabbed her zoom lens Olympus digital camera, recorder with enhanced microphone and fitten them into her backpack. All she needed was her water supply. She pulled out 2 bottles of frozen water from the freezer. The frozen water would melt during the course of the day, and they would keep her cool. She checked her wallet for her license and sufficient cash. Grabbing the keys from the wall mounted key-ring, she climbed down the stairs rather than waiting for the elevators. Soon she was at Mulund Railway Station. She hopped on to the fast commuter train that was going to take her to Thana. Then she would proceed to Badlapur by boarding a Karjat train. The journey to Thana itself was going to take an hour. The hour would give her time to mull over her findings. She had come home, and started her investigation of the Shahs. The credit check followed by a criminal check on all the members of the Shah family had come through by midnight. Boy all this would have taken her more than 2 months to dig had the computers not been there. Now it was child's play. All the information was easily available on the net if you knew where to look. The older members of the family had clean records. But Inder Shah's older son and daughter had very interesting records.

Alaap seemed to have extravagant tastes which were reflected in his credit statement. Alaap's spending habits divulged his involvement in risky speculations. He seemed to have the penchant to back the wrong horse resulting in margin calls a couple of times. But that did not seem to deter him. His subsequent investments seemed to have been even more risky. Chini wondered how he funded all these risky propositions. His driving record was also not clean either. He had been cited and issued multiple tickets for driving without a license. Speeding tickets too. She wondered who gave speeding tickets in India. The record also indicated a very recent an almost involuntary manslaughter charge. Definitely, there was no contest who the black sheep of the family was. And he was married to Gunda Ganpat's daughter Suyesha.

Prachi Shah now Mishra's clean criminal record was marred by a single record. She had been booked for prostitution 3 months ago. But she had been bailed out by her husband the same evening. Other than that, her credit report seemed pretty good. The youngest and the baby of the family was Soumya whose record did not disclose any anomalies.

But Chini could not digest was how Prachi married Milind Mishra. Until 8 months ago, Prachi was all set to marry Neev, her childhood sweetheart. The press had covered the engagement and the gossip columnists had thrived on when the grandiose Shah-Shergill wedding plans were announced. Speculations had run rampant when, Inder Shah had died suddenly. Till date his murder was not solved due to lack of evidence. It seemed to be hit and run case. And then Neev Shergill was married to Prachi's step-sister who stepped out of nowhere. Hardly did the gossip die the flames of speculations were fanned again with Prachi-Milind wedding.

An hour seemed to fly. The beep on her watch indicated that the train should be reaching Thana. Soon Chini switched trains at Thana and boarded the next train to take her to Badalpur. With 20 minutes, Chini was in Badlapur. Coming out of the station, she had to haggle with the rickshaw driver to drop her off at the Church of All Saints. The rickshaw driver seemed to know his way around and soon she was at the entrance. Chini walked through the massive doors of the church to be let into the dark prayer hall. It was still 9.30 in the morning, other than a handful of people who were praying it was pretty much empty. She found a pew boy cleaning the alter lamps and the dais area. She asked him for the directions to go the Arch Dioceses office and was pointed to the door at the end of the corridor.

Chini:
Good morning father, sorry to intrude. I am Chinmayee Pratap a second year student persuing a degree in Social Work at St. Xavier. Sister Isabella recommended your name highly and said that you would be able to direct me in the right direction.

Father John:
Isabella, who Isabella? I am don't know of anyone from St. Xavier's by that name. Neither was I informed by anyone from that institute that they will be sending a student for information or field work.

Father John was very cautious. His institution had lately been bombarded with a lot of snoopers. He had sworn to protect the privacy of his wards and their adopted parents. It was becoming a nuisance and it was hard for him to maintain a patient fa'ade while dealing with strange requests.

Chini: (who had pulled out a name out of hat and tried to work her charm knew that she had no recourse but to come clean).
Sorry Father, I lied about Isabella. On hindsight, it was the stupidest thing to do. I guess I was not ready for a No from your end. Hence the white lie. You see, I am conducting a research on Orphanages particularly how they are funded, how the lack of funds hamper the well laid plans. And I recall, a few years ago Barkha Ray had covered your organization and you had explained shortage of funds were limiting your expansion plans. With your permission of course I would like to do a follow up on that issue. I have no references with me to prove my story other than the college ID I am carrying in my wallet.'

Chini pulled out her ID and laid it on the father's desk. She prayed that the father would not turn the card, since it had the date of the last quarter, which was more than 5 years ago.

Father John:
'Why the reason for subterfuge? You request is valid and I would have extended my help. You did not have to resort to subterfuge. We do need people to be aware of these issues. It will be really helpful if your research and findings do find publication. It might evoke a few to come forward and commit funds to our projects here. As it is our children are already deprived of their parents. With limited funds, we can't even fund their basic needs, let alone a few frills.'

Chini: 'I would like to do a good job and this will take time. I am willing to commit a week for this project. If you could designate me with a work area, I will try to be out of everyone's way.'

Father John:
'I have a small room next to the kitchen supplies room. Sister Katherine will assist you gathering any kind of details you would want. If you walk with me, we can go ahead and meet her now."

Father John walked Chini next door, where an older motherly figure sat at the desk. Father introduced Chini to Sister Katherine. Chini found Sister Katherine very intimidating. She knew she would have to get really pally soon with the sister to get access to the records and that to within a week. That meant that she will really have to write a beautiful thesis on the subject she had spouted earlier. Chini for the next hour jotted down all her thoughts about the subject and went to Sister Katherine for detailed Q&A session. In the next hour Chini could see the speculation in Sister Katherine's eyes. But anyone could see how devoted Sister Katherine was to the cause. She pretty much knew her facts and figures by heart. Chini knew she had to bide her time here.

Three hours later, Chini decided to take a break and stretch her legs. She stepped out of the Church compound and walked to the Orphanage. As she took in the lay of the land, she watched kids play, while the nuns supervising the kids. Chini wondered how they managed children with disabilities. She had learned that a large portion of the kids in the orphanage were abandoned kids because of their disabilities. As Cini watched the matrons and the ward aides help the children in the play area, she noticed one of the ward aides move towards the fence, to receive a packet over the fence from an outsider. The matron too had watched the same incident and had done her job of reprimanding the ward aide.

Walking back to her room, Chini knew who could be her source at the institution. She decided to return tomorrow with a renewed plan of attack.
