Robby's here!
Been There, Strummed That: Karan Patel

The male lead for Kasturi has finally been selected.Karan Patel, who has acted in pretty much every Balaji show, will now play the character of Robby Sabharwal (apparently, Ekta Kapoor finds a bit of Sanjay Dutt in him.

Good heavens, someone give that woman glasses!).

Karan's character is that of a super successful rock star, who is very arrogant (reminds you of Angad aka Iqbal Khan from Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai, no?) and is used to always having his way.

Yawn. Can we have another (original) 'rockstar' story, puhleez?

My Character & I
By: Shaheen Parkar
May 8, 2007
Nikkhil Arya plays a ghar jamaai in the Star daily Kasturi. Here, he talks about the character, also called Nikkhil!

Nikkhil loves to mess up other people's lives in Kasturi?

The small screen is full of vamps, and I play the male version of a vamp! I sport blue lenses and a stubble, reeking of attitude.

So he is brash and outspoken?

Absolutely. It's his way — the easy way — always. He knows his wife Alaana (Priti Gupta) is besotted by him, so he conveniently parks himself at his in-laws place and lives off them.

What is your relationship with Kasturi like?

Kasturi works as his assistant. The folks at the music company have intentionally hired a simple, middle-class girl so that I don't flirt with her. So I give her a lot of grief. I'm a demanding boss.

Are there Nikkhils in real life?

There are so many ghar-jamaais perfectly ensconced at their wife's side.. In that sense, it is believable.

Nikhil Arya all set to strike back !

Nikkhil Arya, who had created quite a few ripples when he quit Balaji's noon soap, Kesar, is now a happy man essaying negative shades in yet another Balaji primetime soap, Kasturi (Star Plus).

"I play a very dapper villain, also called Nikhil. The best part is that you really hate him for he is the epitome of evil. He is a ghar jamia, but even that does not stop him from having a keep (Pooja played by Amita Chandekar) on the sly," says this ex -model and music video artist.

This Pune born and bred dude openly admits that the first week of Kasturi was not up to the mark, "but later we all worked hard and managed to bring it up to par. Now the audience is beginning to sympathize with the poor Kasturi ( Praneeta Sahu), who is hired as my secretary just because she is a bad looker and Pooja does not trust me, as I have a wandering eye. My character has many more interesting layers, which will be slowly unraveled as the show progresses."

Nikkhil, who was recently seen as Aseem in Kyunki is tired of answering questions on what went wrong with Kesar. "I could not do that show any more as a generation leap was being introduced. Hence I clearly expressed my desire to Ekta that I wished to quit (with a proper notice, et all). The problem surged when the press clubbed my exit with Nandani (Kesar) walkout. She had major issues with Balaji, while my exit was a mutual decision. This really hurt Ekta. Possibly somebody in the production house had played mischief. However as Ekta knew that I had never troubled anyone, she soon offered me a
cameo in Kyunki. Unfortunately even that role could not be given a proper end as my dates were clashing with the Kasturi schedule. I would have hoped that this aspect could have been handled better," Arya sighs.

He has no regrets of quitting Kesar, "My decision has proved right for the show's TRPs post generation leap have dipped. When I was a part of this project it had reached a peak of 7. Anyways I had done all I could with the character of Rudra, be it a passionate lover, good son, a bad man….all the possible twists and turns that a daily demands.

Along with devoting half a month to Kasturi, the actor is looking forward to other avenues as well. "I would love to anchor all kind of shows (musicals, talent hunts,
game shows etc.) The current crop of anchors don't seem spontaneous enough. A good anchor is one who gives a written script his own personality and take". Nikkhil is also quite willing to do other fiction shows as well, "but this time around I would like to try my hand at comedy."

And the 'right'
Bollywood break is also on his wish list, "I would be lying if I would say no," admits this honest dude.

Karan from cameo to lead role

After a series of appearances as side characters and cameos in the Balaji camp, Karan Patel has finally managed to grab the lead role in Star Plus' new serial Kasturi. Although Karan says that his patience has finally been rewarded, he keeps his fingers crossed and refuses to talk about his future prospects in the camp. We spoke to him about the new serial, his experiences and future plans. Here is the excerpt.

Q: Finally you have got a lead role? Are you happy?
A: Yeah, it feels great.

Q: How did Kasturi happen to you?
A: Nothing special, I was in the Balaji camp for a long time now and thus I did not have to appear for any kind of screen test.

Q: What is you character like?
A: My character is called Robby Sabharwal, who is a famous rock
singer and thinks he is the best. In fact, he is the best and is also arrogant. He always likes to be in the company of people.

Q: Can you relate any of your characters with Karan?
A: Yes, Robby is very much like me when it comes to being in the company of people, I too really do not like to stay alone.

Q: Are you happy with the kind of roles that you have been offered?
A: Yes, I'm happy and what else can I ask for. I have been with Balaji for around long three years and have done a lot of serials. But now the patience has been paid back and I have grabbed the lead role.

Q: Tell us something about your journey in Balaji.
A: I started in Balaji with Kahani..., then was Kesar, Kasauti., Kkvayanjali and lots of other serials. I tell you once the
actors become a part of Balaji, they are a pat of the family and the amount of attention and pampering that they get is something any actor can only crave for. I guess, there is no other production house, which pampers its actors to this extend. That is why every actor wants to associate with the name Balaji.

Q: So, tell us do you find any difference in Balaji in the past three years?
A: Yes, there have been a lot of differences in the Balaji camp since the time I joined. Today, Balaji has become more competitive as more and more actors are joining it. But this change is for the better. Actors now put in more efforts in their performances.

Q: Who are you good friend with in Balaji?
A: Hiten (Tejwani), Yash (Tonk) and myself are very good friends and always hang out together. We are like the
three musketeers of Balaji (laughs).

Q: How did you get into acting? Was it planned?
A: I always wanted to become an actor and I'm happy that I finally become one.

Q: Had you taken any formal training in acting?
A: No, I have not taken a formal training as such, but I have attended Shaimak Dawars dancing classes and done a bit of theatre.

Q: Are you looking forward to a career in films too? Is anything in the offering?
A: Yes, I am looking forward to a career in films, but nothing has come up so far. I wish
the producers took a look at me (laughs)

Q: You seem to be becoming the eye-candy of Balaji.
A: I don't think I should speak on speculations. Let my work speak for me.

"I will get the audience to watch me at 9pm
every night!" -
Karan Patel
.

The bad dude of Kasturi: Lakhon Jaisi Par Lakhon Mein Ek has got the TRP's scoring (even with the tacky sets and low production values). Wanna-be sensation and Ekta's new rocker shocker since Iqbal Khan, Karan Patel is enjoying the monarch chair as Robby Sabarwal.

We caught up with him not only to check on his role but also because he was a vital member the designing team when 'the Robby Sabarwal look' was being finalised. He avers, "Yes, I have worked on conceptualising the look to a certain extent. It's Nim Sood (Ekta's maternal aunt) who designs all the looks and, of course they need to get approved from Ekta before we takeover. I have sat with them for hours on deciding the entire styling, be it hair, clothes, accessories, the works."

The look has gelled well with his role in the soap. So how well does he like the image? "It's cool, classy, not jazzy and very me!" Elaborating on 'very me' he continues, "Yes, there are certain aspects in me which akin to my on screen character. I too am a strong headed guy, who will stand by the people he loves and will make life hell for the ones he hates. I am not two faced and wont smile at some one and make a face behind his back. I can't fake my expressions!"

Robby is a rocker in the show- is he also obtusely inclined to music? "You will be surprised; I am, but only Bollywood music!"

What interests us the most is the change in his characterisation- will be turn into the prime villain or be Kasturi's true love bumming off Naman Shaw? "Hey, I am not going to reveal the plot to you! But I am sure it's going to be very exciting, irrespective the character swinging the good way or bad way. I will get the audience to watch me at 9pm every night!"

For now this actor is riding high on the show, we hope it remains that way too!

By A.L.Chougule

As a member of Shiamak Davar's dance troupe for three years, he has several dance performances to his credit. But that was before he got a break in acting with Balaji's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. Since then he has been doing only Balaji dailies. Apparently his ability to dance and his three-year long association with Balaji helped him get the main lead in Ekta Kapoor's latest show Kasturi where Karan Patel plays the famous, super successful rock star Robby Sabharwal.

"Ekta said she wanted me to play the lead in Kasturi. After playing character roles in Kahani, Kavyanjali and Kesar, this was the first big opportunity that came my way and I said yes. A particular look was designed for the character and I appeared for the look test. Ekta was happy and I got the first major role of my career," beams the young actor who did theatre workshops and backstage work with Nadira Babbar before he got a break on TV.

Though he has been doing serials for the last three years, none of the roles he has played brought him into the limelight. "In daily soaps the focus always remains on the lead characters, others stay in the background, no matter how good their role is," elaborates Karan thus explaining why his roles in Kesar and Kahani... didn't give him great fame.

"I knew my time would come and I would graduate to lead roles one day."And the main lead that he patiently waited for finally came his way when he was chosen to play Robby Sabharwal in Kasturi. "Robby is a big rock star. He's flamboyant, arrogant and a self-made man with loads of attitude. He loves his fans and he's not a snob but he is rich and classy with a lot of style. Adulation is a way of life with him. I think that's how rock stars are," he says.

Ask him how the rich, stylish rock star falls for a middle class girl from Chandni Chowk and he says Kasturi works in his office. "They come across each other in his office and whether they fall in love or not has to be seen," he adds. "It's an excellent role and it's definitely a huge responsibility on my shoulders to play the character convincingly. I am giving it my 100 per cent," says Karan who feels youngsters will easily relate to the character.

"Young people don't watch television much, particularly the family soaps. But Kasturi will get a good share of youth audience." Apart from acting and dance, Karan loves horse-riding and script writing. "I am an amateur writer," he adds. He also likes to party and socialise a lot. His best friends are Hiten Tejwani and Yash Tonk. "We are called the three musketeers of Balaji," he laughs. Going out for dinner and to night clubs after a hard day's work with his two close friends and their spouses is a regular activity with Karan. "We enjoy each other's company and have the best time," he signs off.

Meet Kasturi

Kasturi is starting from 23 April, which will be replacing KBC 3. Balaji is now launching their new girl Praneeta Sahu through this show. The show will come on air from Monday to Thursday 9.30 PM.

Praneeta says: "I was in Delhi when I received a call from Balaji. I had auditioned just like that. Then I specially came from Delhi for a 'look' test. My parents are in Delhi. None of them belong to this field. My brother is a builder and my sister is married and also working. My father is a businessman (builder) and my mum is a housewife. So I'm from a business family. When they heard this news that I'm going to Mumbai and doing television they were surprised. But later they were ok with it"

"They never thought that I'll do television. They were aware about my theatre activities and auditions which I used to go for. But they were fine with it. However when I told them that I'm going to do this show they were surprised."

"I'm playing Kasturi, who is a middle class simple and innocent girl. They have asked us not to reveal anything more. I have done my acting workshop in Pune this year for 18 days. Bunty and Prashant had conducted this acting workshop. I'm doing Bachelor in Business Administration course. I'm studying in the second year. My exams are starting from May. So I may take leave for it. Here in Mumbai right now I'm living with my family friend. I'm hunting for a house on a rental basis. I want a house near my studio so that I can travel easily. I'm looking forward for house near Marol (Andheri). My parents are not going to shift here in Mumbai. They may visit frequently here but they will not permanently shift here in Mumbai."

"I haven't received my first payment as yet. So I haven't decided that what I am going to buy after I receive it. I'll use 70 per cent of it for my personal use and rest I'll give it to my family."

Nikhil Arya who is playing lead role in this show says: "I usually maintain complete difference between my roles. This role will be a total surprise for my audiences. I have changed my looks for this role. The characterization is also totally different. The interesting thing is that I'm playing Nikhil on screen as well.

I'm playing lead role and I'll start my shooting from tomorrow. I have signed a contract with them which require 15 days of a month. So I'm also looking forward to anchoring offers. Ekta has given me the best offer through this role. The show is replacing KBC 3, so there are chances of getting more audiences for this show. Apart from new girl Praneeta, Mahesh, Vikram Kapadia, Panchi Bohra and Rupa Ganguly are also there in this show."

Nikhil has done serials like Kesar, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Rabba Ishq Na Hove.

It is said that Amrita Singh and Sangeet Bedi are also playing important roles in this show.

Naman Shaw, the next Ronit Roy?

Naman Shaw seems to be following Ronit Roy's footsteps of working around the clock. Ronit is presently doing four serials and Naman is now taking on a new role as Kasturi's fianc in Kasturi. It will be the third serial he is doing simultaneously. He is also present as Nakul Virani in Kyunki… and Pushkar in Kasam Se.

We caught up with Naman on his first day of shoot. He says, "My character will be engaged to Kasturi in the second or third episode and I do not know whether this character will play a lead role as yet."

The fact that he is doing three serials does not put any strain on Naman:

"Doing Kyunki…, Kasam Se and now Kasturi doesn't give me any stress as Balaji production manages my timings. I work for 15 hours a day and get a 12 hour roll over period. I can manage everything as all my shootings are done in shifts. I also manage to spend time with my family which is the most important. As for exhaustion from overworking, I think it's all about how you manage yourself. Not every actor faints on the sets. I'm enjoying my work. It's not that an actor is in front of the camera for 24 hours. When I'm not in a scene I just relax in my vanity van."

Naman promises his characters will be more prominent in days to come:

Both the serials are going nicely. In Kyunki… the audience love seeing Nakul's track, especially his love story with Sanjhi. In Kasam Se my track will become more important after the leap."

Shaw is slowly making his face very prominent on prime time television with Kasam Se, Kasturi and Kyunki... being aired daily at 9 PM, 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM respectively.
