Ektaa salutes the middle class
The soap queen on her latest show 'Kasturi' and plans to make a reality show
Sapana Patil Poojary
Kasturi is one amongst the millions but one in a million," says producer Ektaa Kapoor about the lead character (played by Shubhangi Atre) in her show 'Kasturi' (Star Plus) that launches tonight. She adds, "Usually girls blindly follow their hearts but Kasturi is a girl who thinks before she takes a decision. 'Kasturi' is a heart touching love story It is a salutation to the middle . class of India for surviving against all odds; especially for travelling by public transport from one end of the city to another." She adds candidly "Honestly speaking, I wouldn't be able to , do that!" Interestingly Ektaa has cast relatively new , faces in the show. To this, she says, "I get better performances from the established actors but I get a lot of enthusiasm from new actors. And that is what matters today ." Coincidentally the promotion capsules of , this serial appear similar to those of 'Kkusum', a serial she made few years ago. She bites her tongue and smiles; probably embarrassed at having been caught doing another rip-off ? "It is one of the cutest promos. I wanted to reuse the concept of hundreds of girls getting out of the train and pointing towards just one," she admits.

Even though comparisons between 'Kkusum' and 'Kasturi' are evident, Ektaa is confident that viewers will still watch 'Kasturi'. On why she doesn't make men-oriented serials, she retorts, "Let my competitors make them and we'll see if women allow men to watch them. The remote will still be with women." On being asked for how long her serials "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' (both on Star Plus) would continue, she replies, "If people love the characters, I have no right to pull it off. If the audiences don't like it, the show will be replaced automatically ." Having made several popular serials, Ektaa is now considering making reality shows. "I will make a reality show. It will neither be music-based nor a talent hunt show," she keeps the curiosity going.

Kasturi faints on the sets
By: Upala KBR
April 26, 2007

Gruelling five-day shoot takes its toll on the actress

With round-the clock shooting schedules, fainting fits have become the norm rather than an exception in tellyland.

On Tuesday, it claimed its latest victim in Shubhangi Atre, who plays the title role in the new show Kasturi (Star Plus).

Atre fainted while shooting for a one of the episodes at Sankraman Studios. She was then put on saline and made to rest till she recovered.

Overworked

Gayatri Gill, script head of Kasturi, says, "It's true. Shubhagi fainted on April 24 while shooting for Kasturi. She was shooting for the rokda scene with Naman Shaw, who plays her fianc .

We put her on saline on the set itself. She has been shooting non-stop ever since we began work on Kasturi last Friday, as she plays the title role. In fact all the actors are overworked but have been extremely cooperative."

Gayatri explains that the reason for Shubhangi's fainting fit "is the fact that we have had three units for the show running continuously at Sankraman, and Shubhangi has been running from one unit to the other."

She is now fine but is feeling bad that the unit was inconvenienced. Gayatri adds that they are already falling short of time.

"We had to shoot a party sequence last night (Wednesday), but we still hadn't finished Tuesday's episode."

Too much, too soon

She says that most TV stars fall ill in the initial stages of a show or when there are time leaps. "There are so many creative changes happening – time leaps, storylines, director and cast changes, etc – that people take time to settle in.

Everything is rushed and frantic. In the first three weeks, TRPs fall in place and characters' looks are set. For an average two-hour shoot, the director might take six hours. Such things happen and we take them into account."

Currently, Shubhangi is on an IV drip and an ambulance has been kept on standby on the sets should she fall ill again.

Draupadi's back !

Rupa Ganguly rose to fame as Draupadi from the television series Mahabharat. After this, the talented actress went off to Calcutta in search of meaty roles. Now after a long sabbatical, she will be seen in Anurag Basu's Love Story on Sab TV.

In a candid chat with tellychakkar.com, Rupa tells us all about her second innings on the small screen.

You rose to fame with B R Chopra's Mahabharat. Why did you leave television after that?
I was greedy and hungry for good work so I left tellywood . I was doing Bengali feature films with reputed filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghosh. Though these films haven't really been seen by people here, but there's a section of society who has appreciated these films.

Or where there other reasons..
I am a very simple girl from a middle class background. Thodi si acting kar li (just did a bit of acting) and that was a big achievement for me. I could never wear skimpy clothes and do films here in Mumbai. This was the trend those days. There were no heroine oriented films .I did one film but somehow it didn't click though it did good business. Also, I would run away to Calcutta every second day. Also, I wanted to get married at the right age and have children. Now, I am happily married and have a ten year old son Aakash.

Why have you taken up Love Story now?
Well, Anurag Basu also happens to be a Bengali and he knows the kind of work I do. So, when he offered me this role, he told me I would be playing mother to Aakash in the serial. I jumped at the offer since I could identify so much with this character.

Tell us a bit about the role?
I play Ritu who's married to a very honest and upright policeman. Somehow, both cannot get along and decide to separate. The story reflects on how the umhappy
marriage and separation affects their son Aakash, Later on, as he grows up, one see a drastic change in hi behavioural pattern. Ritu gets into another relationship with a friend but then she doesn't want to get too involved in it because of her son. Love Story is about relationships and the way Anurag has tackled it, the script runs like a film. All the episodes are connected and weaved in an interesting way.

You also signed on Kasturi?
Ya, Kasturi I play one of the bahus and who's a great pillar of strength for Kastrui.

What are your views on marriage and divorce?
I suppose in today's world, one is too busy with duniya dari, maintaining one's own lifestyle and building a career. It sometimes becomes very difficult for two people to live together. In the olden day, no one had any option but today we do have the option. Now for the last 18 years I am earning my own money and leading my own life. I think seperation and
divorce are never a solution, as it leaves a bad influence on the child. But if the fights are getting too ugly for a couple then its better to part ways. But then remember there are no perfect people in this world. If two people are alike, there are problems and if they think differently even then there are problems.

You also signed on Kasturi?
Ya, Kasturi I play one of the bahus and who's a great pillar of strength for Kastrui.

These two serials in hand would take away most of your time?
Both the serials put together take away more than twenty days of shooting in a month. Now my son has grown up and he can take care of himself. And I am very happy to be here.

Kut and paste soaps

(Posted on 27 April 2007)

Much as I would like to convince myself that Balaji soaps offer the much
needed escape from reality to the harassed housewife, each of its offerings,
trotted out at regular intervals, continues to disappoint.

Kasturi is no different. The idea probably was to replicate the Kkusum story - the plain Jane next door, who's actually one in a million, but it's a tired old premise now. The novelty has worn off Kkusum-like characters, and grandiose Balaji sets (however middle class the protagonist, her house can be nothing less than a mansion) don't impress any more. Nor do the designer sarees and custom made baubles. The sameness is omnipresent, whether it be a new Kasturi, a recent Kayamath or even the old Kesar.

Kasturi's protagonist is a plain looking girl, who in the inaugural episodes, has to battle the issue of getting married against her wishes, to a chocolate face, who seems kind enough. Does nothing more exciting happen in the lives of Indian girls even today? Do all their dreams and aspirations end at the altar even in this age? Balaji and Star seem convinced it's so.

Barely a few days after shooting for Kasautii... Shubhangi gets a call from Balaji telling her she's the chosen one for their new serial Kasturi. The newcomer is on cloud 9, all set to take on the pressure of working in a daily. Here she spills the beans on her new role in a K serial, on future her plans and her reel and real life.

Q How does it feel to be the leading lady of a big Balaji show?

I'm so excited. I cannot believe it has happened. Though this is not my first TV venture — I'm playing the character called Palchin in Kasautii Zindagii Kay — this is my first lead role.

Q Tell us about yourself.

I'm originally from Indore, have done my MBA. I'm a trained Kathak dancer. But I have no formal training in acting and neither have I done any theatre.

Since I was a dancer, I got a few offers for modelling. One of my photographer friends told me there were auditions in Pune for Balaji. He advised me to give it a try. I gave the audition for Kasturi but I was given a role in Kasautii… instead. And a few days later I was told I have been selected to play the lead in Kasturi.

Q What's your character like in Kasturi?

Kasturi belongs to a middle class family. Her parents are everything for her. She is also an ambitious person in life but does not forget her traditions. The story revolves around her family and her dreams.

Q Any similarities between Shubhangi and Kasturi?

I also belong to a middle class family and am ambitious. I've three sisters and we are a close knit family. So there are a lot of similarities between Shubhangi and Kasturi.

Q Does this mean it'll be easier for you to play Kasturi?

I really do not know. I can only give it my best shot. Let us see what happens. Once I start shooting I'll have a better idea. Till then, I can only pray that all goes well.

Q Are you nervous?

I'm excited as well as nervous. Excited because I have got a lead role and nervous because it adds to my responsibilities.

Q What kind of roles do you think are your forte?

Well, I'd like to do different kinds of roles with different shades. Anyway, it is too early in my career to say what I'm capable of doing.

Q Are you prepared for the work pressure?

I know it's a great of responsibility playing a lead role. I also know there are going to be a lot of hectic schedules. But I think I'll handle it.

Q Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Five years is a long time. I don't know what's going to happen in the next five years. I haven't planned anything too. Right now I'm clueless. I'd rather take it as it comes.

In fact she did admit her heart almost missed a beat when her production team called to say the lead star in Kasturi has refused to shoot round-the-clock for the new serial because she had her exams coming up. Ekta who was on her way to Tirupati was in a dilemma as the promos were already being aired. Overnight she told the team to call another 50 applicants for auditions. She liked none, yet zeroed in one girl. But after a few episodes were shot Ekta felt the girl was too plump and couldn't carry off the role. So she cancelled the shoot once again.

The d-day for the serial to go on air was nearing and Ekta had no shoots! She looked everywhere but couldn't find a suitable girl to play Kasturi. She even requested the channel if she could postpone the show by a week. And like magic, suddenly things fell into place. While she looked all over the country for a suitable actress, the girl she finally zeroed in on is Shubangi Atre, who plays Palchin in Kasauti… Ekta wonders how Shubangi missed her eye earlier. "She has got the perfect looks for Kasturi," she said. But her woes didn't end there. Ekta is desperately looking for a suitable male lead. Rumour is Naman Shaw is almost finalised.

Chit-chat with Naman Shaw

Famous as Pushkar of 'Kasamh Se', Naman Shaw will now be seen in the Star Plus' brand new serial 'Kasturi' where he is being paired opposite the lead protagonist Shubhangi Atre.

Finally you have got a lead role. Are you happy?
It is not a lead but yes I will be playing opposite Shubhangi. Today was the first day that I shot for the serial and it is great.

How did 'Kasturi' happen to you?
I was doing 'Kasamh Se' but now my track will be out for a few months after the break. Presently my main track is in 'Kyunki..' as Nakul. So Ekta told me to play the role here in 'Kasturi'.

What will be your role like?
I will play a sweet loving guy by the name of Girish. I get engaged and then there are twists in the tail for which you will have to watch the serial.

Now how will you manage three serials, especially when you are playing the lead in one?
See
time management is not my headache. Most in Balaji work for more than one serial and Balaji manages the time for them. I do not have to do anything. I always get a roll-over time and come back to the sets and after ten hours I leave.

Can you relate any of your characters to Naman?
I think Pushkar (Kasamh Se) in the beginning was like Naman. Next is Nakul who is not at all like Naman(Kyunki..). And again Girish is like Naman in the beginning.

Are you happy with the kind of roles you have been offered?
Yes I'm happy with the sweet loving simple character that I am being offered because I personally do not like to do those screaming and shouting. Plus I'm being offered three major serials in Balaji which are doing well. What else can one ask for?

How has been your journey in Balaji till date?
It has been a lovely journey in Balaji. As a newcomer I had been treated very well and made to feel extremely comfortable.

With whom you are close to?
In Balaji we are like one family and it is a separate world out here. I'm close to Joydeep, Prachi, Sahil, Ali Merchant and Neel.

Will you be missing 'Kasamh Se'?
Yes it is my first television venture and I will certainly be missing it a lot. But don't worry as I will also be back soon.

You're slowly becoming the eye-candy of Balaji or rather Ekta? What do you feel about it?
Who does not want to become the
eye-candy of Ekta Kapoor. I am happy that now I'm becoming a Balaji boy.

How did you get into acting? Was it planned?
I had always wanted to become an actor. I was a model and had even participated in Grasim Mr.India 2003 where I won the 'Best Smile' award. I was also one of the top ten finalists in 'Zee Cinestar Ki Khoj'. After the show got over, I started giving auditions and looking out for a career in acting. 'Kasamh Se' was my first serial. I have never done any theatre.

Are you interested in films too?
Yes I'm and who is not interested in films. But as of now I have only received offers from B or C grade films which I'm not interested in doing. If I receive any good offers, I will certainly do it.

Where do you see yourself from a few years hence?
I actually do not know. Even I keep asking myself the same question all the time as to where I will be few years hence.

One-woman show!

Reportedly, Star Plus will now have only Ekta Kapoor's shows on primetime.

Kya hit hai: Team Balaji

Ekta Kapoor has done it again. If the grapevine is to be believed, Ekta is on her way to become the official partner of Star Plus. And eventually, Star Plus will only have Balaji shows on primetime. Consequently, all non-Balaji shows will now be shifted to Star One.

However, Harsh Rastogi, General Manager of content and communication at Star, denied the development. He said, "There is no such deal happening in the near future."

Star had already signed a project with Balaji to create a leading television network in regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and other key, targeted at the fast growing South Indian market within the next three years. Fifty-one per cent of this joint venture is owned by Star and 49 per cent by Balaji. The potential deal is only an extension of the strong relationship between the two.

Says a source in Star, "Ekta is on her way to sign an exclusive contract with Star Plus according to which, her shows will henceforth be dominating the primetime slot. Ekta shares a good rapport with Star and the channel is also very keen on Ekta's proposal. With this agreement, Ekta will be a major shareholder with the Star team."

Now that Ekta will have the monopoly, the other producers are quite wary of the situation. "Star Plus being one of the leading channels, getting a time slot is an achievement for any production house. Now, all of them will be barred from the primetime slot, which is unfair. Apparently, Deeya and Tony Singh, who were supposed to do a show for Star, have already been shown the door recently," adds the source.

It all started seven years back with Balaji's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhu Bahu Thi, when the 10.30 pm (post-KBC slot) was given to this path-breaking saas-bahu show. Later shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kasautii Zindagi Kay followed. Seven years down the line, the scene is almost the same; these three shows are still ruling the roost with multiple generation leaps. There was just one time slot, that Balaji could not intrude (from 9-10 pm) on primetime. But now, Kasturi has made its way in the coveted time slot.

The K-Slot

As the deal is yet to be signed, the newly-launched Meri Awaaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni is safe for the moment. The reason is that Ekta already has a show Kasamh Se, going very strong on Zee TV. And according to the deal, no production house can produce serials for two channels simultaneously in the same time slot.

8.00 pm — Karam Apna Apna (Balaji)
8.30 pm — Kasautii Zindagi Kay (Balaji)
9.00 pm — Meri Awaaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni (Fox Television Network)
9.30 pm — Kasturi (Balaji)
10.00 pm — Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Balaji)
10.30 pm — Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Balaji)
11.00 pm — Kayamath (Balaji)

Kasturi ki kahani

Married and loving it: Shubhangi Poorey

Only two female leads of Balaji's ongoing shows, Shweta Tiwari (Prerna of Kasautii) and Smriti Iraani (Tulsi of Kyunki), are married with children.

And just when we thought that Ekta Kapoor only prefers casting unmarried girls in lead roles for her shows, HiTLIST has learned that her latest discovery Shubhangi Poorey (who plays the title role of Kasturi) is married with an 18-month old daughter, Ashi.

Maid of honour

Our source from the unit reveals that Shubhangi's baby daughter was seen on the sets a few days ago.

When we speak to Shubhangi about her, she does not beat round the bush. "Yes, I'm married, and I also have a daughter," she admits.

As long as Shubhangi is on the sets, Shubhangi's husband, Piyush (who is on leave from work), looks after Ashi.

Her parents were here for few days to look after Ashi too, but now they have gone to London for some work. "My husband has got his job transferred to the Mumbai branch.

This happened because I got Kasturi. I am very proud of my husband. He has been very supportive," she says.

Piyush says, "I will be joining office very soon. I think we'll then hire a maid to look after Ashi."

No big deal

Shubhangi, who is from Pune, has now shifted to Mumbai. She shifted into her new house in Malad two days back. Prior to this, she was staying with some friends in Lokhandwala.

She has been going home for barely a few hours rest, but feels it's no big deal if one is married and working in a TV serial.

Asked how she manages the hectic schedules of a daily serial, Shubhangi says, "Shweta Tiwari and Smriti Iraani too are married and mothers. If they can do it, why can't I?"

Shubhangi and Piyush had a love marriage. After marriage, Shubhangi got some modelling offers for advertisements, which Piyush did not object to.

A few days later, Shubhangi was finalised for Kasturi.

Interview of the week: By Mili S
Popular as Pushkar of Kasamh Se and Nakul of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi, Naman Shaw will now be seen in another new serial, Kasturi, wherein he's paired opposite the lead protagonist Shubhangi Atre.

Excerpts from an interview

Q

Finally you've got a lead role? Are you happy?

It's not a lead but yes I will be playing opposite Shubhangi. I just started shooting and it feels great.

In Kasamh Se, for a few months now I won't be seen. Presently my main track is in Kyunki... only, as Nakul. So Ekta told me to be a part of Kasturi.

My role here is that of a sweet, loving guy called Girish. I am engaged to Kasturi and then there are twists in the tale for which you will have to watch the serial.

Time management is not my headache. Most people in Balaji work in more than one serial and Balaji manages the time for them. I do not have to do anything. I always get roll-over time and come back to the sets 10 hours after I leave.

Q

Can you relate to any of your characters?

Pushkar (in Kasamh Se) in the beginning was like Naman. Nakul (in Kyunki...) is just not me. Girish (in Kasturi) is again like me. But it's just the beginning.

I'm happy with the simple, loving characters that I play on screen because basically I'm like that. I do not like aggression. Plus I'm being offered three major serials in Balaji which are doing well. What else can one ask for?

Q

How has your journey in Balaji been till date?

Lovely. As a newcomer I was treated very well and made to feel extremely comfortable.

In Balaji we are like one family and it is a separate world out here. I'm close to Joydeep, Prachi, Sahil, Ali Merchant and Neel.

Even I keep asking myself the same question.
