Shweta is my mother, says Shubhangi

After Kasturi, Shubhangi Atre of Kasturi fame is seen in Jalwa 4, 2 ka 1. And while this maybe her first reality show, the actress says that the fact that it's a dance show makes her feel happy and flattered.
"The show is a combination of comedy, singing and dancing. This is what interested me and dance has always been very close to my heart," says the thrilled actress.
Shubhangi has already shot for 3 episodes of Jalwa. "Jalwa mein you are given marks separately for concept, performance and expressions which is one great thing about the show," she explains, "Recently I performed salsa with Krishna and I simply loved it…it was great fun!"

Dancing has always been a passion for the Kasturi star and she is a trained classical dancer.

"I am a trained Kathak dancer. I've performed at national levels. I simply love dancing especially classical and folk dancing," informs Shubhangi

Who amongst the judges is her favourite?

"Both the judges are nice. Both Satishji and Mahimaji are impartial. They equally observe every individual and then comment. The best thing about them is they are very straight forward. If they don't find a performance dignified, they say it openly"

Shubhangi was earlier in Shakti Kapoor's team along with Krishna and Tanaaz but she has now switched on to Shweta Tiwari's team. She feels that working with Shakti Kapoor has been her honour for her "Shaktiji ne abtak 700 films ki hain. He is full of immense energy and dedication. It has been a great experience," says an elated Shubhangi.

"But Shweta has always been my mother in the industry. She has been like my elder sister. While I was in Kasturi also she guided me completely," says Atre fondly.

A glimpse into the world of celebrity moms

As we progress towards a global world where gender, caste, creed and country do not matter in the professional world, one of the biggest challenges women face today is how to balance their personal and work life. With increasing expectations from both sides, today's working mother finds herself struggling hard to maintain the balance. The situation gets worse in the television industry where work schedules are erratic and hours inhuman. We spoke to some of the celebrity moms from the television industry on how they are coping with this challenge.

Shubangi Atre (Kasturi) :

Being a working mother, that too from the television industry is very difficult. When I started the show (Kasturi) my daughter (Aashi) was one and a half year's old. I still remember the day I got selected for the show I had to travel in the middle of the night. You know how difficult it is to leave an infant in the middle of the night and leave. But I had to and thus immediately called my parents and asked them to stay with the baby while I went for the shoot.

I think it is very important to have either parents or in- laws around for working women. It is impossible to manage otherwise. In fact, just the other day I saw a story on a national channel about how maids and nannies gave sleeping pills to babies to put them to sleep for long hours. I shuddered to think what would have happened to Aashi if someone did that to her. With parents it is so much safe. I am so relieved that my parents stay with me in Mumbai. But I also understand it is not always possible. So my advice for all working mothers who do not have the luxury of having their parents or in- laws around is to stay with the nanny for some time and only after you are comfortable, leave her alone with the baby.

Now Aashi is 3 and very happy seeing me on television. She waits for 9.30 pm everyday and watches my serial! In fact, she was my role model when I played the role of a lady who had become a kid mentally, because of an accident. I tried to imitate her on the sets and was praised by all for my performance. In fact, Aashi wanted me to get back all the toys I used during the shoot!

Interestingly, my daughter is already getting offers for ads but I don't want her to take it up now. One offer had a weird shift timing so I said no. I do not have any problems if she decides to take this up as a career.

Motherly pangs for Shubhangi Atre

Actress Shubhangi Atre maybe back at work but her heart is still at home. The actress says after having enjoyed close to a month with her three year old daughter, Ashi, at home she is finding it absolutely difficult to concentrate at work now.

"For the last 23 days I was at home with my daughter and now it is very difficult for me to leave her and go for my shoots," says the actress.
Previously Shubhangi used to take Ashi to the sets too but now that the tiny tot has begun play school, she stays at home with nani.

"Woh pehle se hi hamesha se mere saath set par jaati thi, break ke beech mein main ussi ke saath time spend karti thi aur fir mera pack up hone tak wo wahin par khelti rehti thi," says the doting mom, "Ashi is pampered by everyone on the sets, hamare director toh uske saath bahot masti karte hain."

"Ashi is close to my mom, so I don't think that she'll have any problem staying with her. However I'll take her with me on shoot some day," adds Atre.

Shubhangi: Kasturi could have had a better end

This month seems to have been a refreshing one for television viewers. With all the saas bahu sagas wrapping up, the small screen now promises to entertain its viewers with new and exciting concepts. The most recent serial on Star to bid adieu to its viewers was Kayamath on March 12. Now, it's Kasturi's that's headed for the exit door on March 31.

Shubhangi, the lead actress of Kasturi, says, "It was a very emotional day when we shot for the last episode. I toh just couldn't stop my tears. We all got very emotional but at the same time, we all had loads of fun. We shot for 24 hours on the last day and packed up at 7 in the morning. I threw a dinner party for the entire team and we all had a blast."
Shubhangi feels that the show could have come to a better conclusion. She says, "Kasturi started off really well and garnered immense love from the viewers but in the last one month, it has faced unwarranted problems such as its time slot and certain other things."

The actress also talks about the sometimes unrealistic plots of Kasturi, saying, "The number of marriages that happen on the show should have been reduced. I myself got married six times onscreen. All this shouldn't happen. A proper and important message is a must. Although, I do agree that this is what viewers want and that is why it is shown, I think it's high time that this trend changes."

There are many things that the actress will miss about the show. She says, "I'll miss Kasturi as it was my first show and my first accomplishment. First achievements always remain special and memorable. I'll miss the character, the shoots and everything about Kasturi."

Shubhangi was very close to some of her costars and vows to keep in touch with them. "I was very close to my onscreen mom and dad, Rajyashree who played Mona Maasi and Bharat. We are all in touch and will stay in touch forever. My onscreen mom and dad are like my real parents, they've taught me a lot in terms of acting and I respect and admire them a lot," says the actress.

Shubhangi shot for the last Kasturi episode on March 16 and it will be telecast on March 31. As of now, the multitalented actress is looking after her family and spending quality time with her three-year-old daughter Ashi.

    Onscreen pyaar, off-screen inkaar
    Vandana Shukla/ Hill Road Media

While it's quite common to hear mushy stories of onscreen couples pairing up in real life too, details of certain small screen lovebirds who can't stand to be near each other when the cameras stop rolling are lesser known. We give you the lowdown on the TV twosomes who may share great chemistry on their shows but are anything but lovers in reality.

Shubhangi Atre (Kasturi) and Karan Patel (Robbie)
Kasturi's (Star Plus) Kasturi and Robbie are one of our favourite jodis. However, off-screen, things aren't so peachy. When the show was airing, Shubhangi remained silent about her discomfort with Karan, even though he openly expressed his hatred towards the actress. Since the show wrapped up and the two no longer had to see each other everyday, they managed to wish one another well… at least publicly.

    Shubhangi's Bollywood dreams

Shubhangi Atre, who used to star in the now-defunct Kasturi (Star Plus), is back in action with her next project; and this time, it's on the big screen. Shubhangi will be seen in the kid's movie Little Master.

Shubhangi tells us about her Bollywood project, saying, "Little Master is directed by Ravi Bhatia. Although I can't reveal much, I can say that it is a very fun kids' movie. I'll be seen interacting with the children and it is hilarious."

She says the movie bears resemblance to the Hollywood blockbuster Home Alone, adding, "As far as I've read the script, I think it is quite similar to Home Alone. Although, I haven't ever watched the movie at one stretch, I've decided now to watch it for sure."

However, Shubhangi refuses to reveal much about her character, saying, "All I can tell you is that I am playing a working woman called Pallavi, who is very ambitious and determined. At the same time, she is a mother and being a mother, she is protective of her child. Since I am a mother in real life, the experience will help me play this character."

Atre says she wanted her two-year-old daughter Ashi also cast in the movie but Ashi would have none of it. She adds, "I wish she could star in it but she's camera phobic. She's always doing masti, all the time, but once the camera is on, she doesn't react only!"

The actress took up the offer because of the film's great script. "I was approached last week and the script was so interesting that I just couldn't say 'no'. It has very interesting and beautiful scenes; there are 2-3 songs too which are very nice. Since it's a kid's movie, Ashi has already decided that she will come with me to the sets everyday."

Shooting for Little Master will begin next week.
