Budget Blues

It's that time of the year which decides the fate of our hard earned money. The budget for the year 2007 is going public. We ask our TV celebs what they expect from this year's budget.

Rajeev Paul

I would want the budget to help people live a comfortable life. There's no point making huge announcements if it does not help the common man. I hope the price of transportation comes down so that the states could benefit from each other's surplus stock.

Shweta Salve

I wish the new budget could bring down the real estate prices, which have really sky-rocketed. Moreover the tax slab on entertainment should be reviewed to help the sector.

Ronit Roy

Hope the budget this year has many pleasant surprises. The inflation needs to be beaten and I hope the new budget encompasses measures to curb inflation. Plus the economic health of the nation is pretty great and I hope that it would become better with the announcement of the new budget.

Urvashi Dholakia

I hope the new budget is made keeping the majority in mind, who belong to the middle class strata. The budget should help everybody have a good value of his/her hard earned money. I also hope that the price of commodities is brought down.

I still share a great professional relationship with Ekta Kapoor"--Aaamir Ali

He is surely one actor who has grown steadily over the past few years. With his debut show Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Aamir Ali shot up the popularity charts. The model turned actor is currently busy with the Sahara Show Woh Rehne Wali Mahlon Ki. In a tete-tete with Prashant Golecha, the actor gives a glimpse into his personal and professional life.

What's the real Aamir Ali like?

Smiles….Aamir is a simple, straightforward and a no non-sense kind of a guy. His penchant for adventure has seen him travel all over, thanks to my mom for that.

When you look back at your career, how has the journey been so far?

I was a college student and took up flying with Air-Sahara. Soon after I started getting modelling offers. Cheeta Bhi Peeta hai, the caption line of my ad for Mountain Dew made me noticeable. After that I kept doing ads with Pradeep Sarkar. Then I did a film called Yeah Kya Ho Raha Hai, which was an average at the box office. After this film I decided to do serious projects and took up the role of Samir in Kahaani...

But you disappeared suddenly from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki?

Actually my character Samir was not moving forward and the generation leap was happening. I discussed this issue with the creative people from Balaji and we mutually decided to part ways. I never had any conversation with Ekta Kapoor on that. But I still share a great professional relationship with Ekta Kapoor and Balaji.

Has Balaji offered you anything post your exit from Kahaani?

No. Nothing like that.

How did you bag the Sahara show, Woh Rahne Wali Mahlon Ki?

I never tried too hard to get that role. Infact it was Rajshree Productions who called me and told me about the show. Since the role sounded great, I had a meeting with Kavita Bharjataya and accepted the offer.

What really attracted you to Woh Rehne Wali Mahlo Ki?

Well, the show is a beautiful love story between two characters, Pari, played by Reena Kapoor and Saumya played by me. The show allows me to play a character that I haven't attempted before. For an actor nothing is as great as playing varied roles. Now, my character is going through a transformation phase and I am sure the audience is going to love it equally.

You are friendly with Reena Kapoor as well as Poonam Joshi. Whom do you like the more?

They are both great pals of mine. Though I have worked with Reena for quite some time but I am very fond of Poonam Joshi. The reason being that Poonam is crazier while Reena is a sweet sober kinds.

You were linked with Minisha Lamba and Mahek. Comment.

Both of the girls are great human beings and it's great to be linked with them. I know both of them since a long time now and whenever we bump into social parties we meet as friends. I have never worked with Minisha but me and Mahek have worked together in the forthcoming film Anjaan.

Since you are single describe your dream woman.

She has to be a dream woman. Laughs!!

Which medium do you prefer, television or films?

There's nothing like being choosy about the mediums. Both are creative platforms. What really drives me is acting. If I am getting a great role, I would lap it up irrespective of the medium it belongs to.

Recently it was reported in a leading tabloid that you refused the offer of the lead in Kulvaddhu?

Kulvaddhu is something I don't want to talk about. All I can say is that it is a good show.

What is common between you and Aamir Khan?

Besides the first name there is no similarity. He is one of my favourite actors. He is far better looking and far talented actor than me.

Are you considered a chocolate type of a guy?

I might be. Thanks to my mother and father and also Balaji and Rajshree production for presenting me nicely.

What's the difference you found working for Balaji and Rajshree's?

Rajshree's are known to be sweet and they are actually sweet. Balaji is known to be a troublesome production house but they are not. Balaji is very professional and I had a great time working for Balaji.

What are your future plans?

At the moment I am busy with Woh Rehne Wali….plus I am doing up the new house I have recently purchased. I hope things would shape up fine for me in the coming time.

Kasautii UNO ki
By: Tushar Joshi
March 3, 2007

still can't get the hang of it: Ronit Roy and Shweta Tiwari
Sanjit Bedi, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Shweta Tiwari and Ronit Roy have found a unique way to spend time in between shooting on the sets of Kasautii Zindagi Kay.

The actors have become hooked to the game of UNO. Sources report these actors have become addicted and they all look forward to the game, between shots.

New pastime

she started it: Jennifer Winget

While actors on the tele and film sets usually spend their free time reading, chatting on their mobiles, or catching forty winks, the KZK team pulls out the deck of cards each time they have spare moments.

The person responsible for introducing the game on the set is Jennifer Winget (Sneha).

She is very good at the game and she usually beats everyone else at the game.

Jennifer admits that she got hooked on to the game on the sets of another serial.   ;   ;

still learning: Sanjit Bedi

"I love UNO. I was introduced to the game on the sets of Kkusum and have been addicted to it since then.

In fact, I taught the game to Sanjit and other actors on Kasautii set. It's a great way to kill free time on the sets."

Shweta can't play

The butt of jokes during the game is Shweta Tiwari who is still struggling with the game. Jennifer laughs, "Shweta sucks at UNO at the moment.

But she's trying very hard and will pick it up soon. Shabbir is quite good, while Sanjit is still being tutored by me", jokes Jenny.

good at it: Shabbir Ahluwalia

Apart from UNO, the cast also play games like dumb charades, and Twenty Questions amongst others. Jennifer reveals that 20 Questions was Shabbir Ahluwalia's idea.

"A player comes and thinks of a person and the others have to guess his identity by asking under twenty questions.

It's quite interesting. Shabbir is quite good at it and I am picking it up slowly."

What is UNO?

UNO is one of the world's most popular family card games, with rules easy enough for kids, but challenges and excitement enough for all ages.

The custom deck consists of cards of 4 suits (colours): red, green, blue, and yellow.

The ranks in each suit are 0-9. There are 3 "honor" cards in each suit, labelled "skip", "draw two", and "reverse".

There are special black cards, "wild" and "wild draw four". Each player is dealt 7 cards with the remaining ones placed face down to form a "draw" pile.

The top card of the draw pile is turned over to begin a "discard" pile. The first player has to match the card in the discard pile either by number, colour or word.

For example, if the card is a red 7, player must throw down a red card or any colour 7. Or the player can throw down a Wild Card. If the player doesn't have anything to match, he must pick a card from the draw pile.

If he can't play what is drawn, play moves to the next person. When you have one card left, you must yell "UNO" (meaning one).

Failure to do this results in you having to pick two cards from the draw pile. That is, of course, if you get caught by the other players. The first player who has no cards left is the winner.

Manoj Bohra, Kasauti's Prem is following in his on-screen father Anurag's footsteps and is walking out of the show. Like Cezzane Khan (Anurag) he too is very unhappy with the show's upcoming leap and refuses to play a 50 plus man when he is twenty something in real life. "It's really sad. The generation leap is an unfortunate development because I really loved the character. I feel empty because I don't know what I will do next. Of course I will do something better but I feel sad because I was so attached to my character," he says regretfully.

Reminiscing about his role Manoj says, "Playing Prem has been an overwhelming experience. The way he talks, walks, dresses up and behaves makes him an unusual character. Prem was planned like a normal character who would stay around and not make much impact. But I took it to a different level of success. Kids and Page 3 aunties who never used to watch the show became its regular viewers. It was a humbling feeling when Salim Khan (Salman Khan's father) and his wife told me that they started watching Kasauti because of me."

Coming from a theatre background Manoj says he worked very hard on the role. "A character stands out because of two counts, its look and acting. My wife worked on my look and my theatre experience helped me play the character in a different way," he adds.

Didn't Ekta persuade him to stay on ? "You can't force someone to do something against his wish and she understood my point of view. I came out of the meeting with Ekta with a sulky face but then I didn't want to succumb to any nonsense and have decided to quit," he reveals. "A daily soap is not a film and can go on and on. But then a character has a certain graph and lifespan. It can travel from point A to B and after that it's all over. It was not possible for me to play a 50-year-old man," he says.

After he walks out of Kasauti, the actor will be giving TV a break for sometime. "I am getting back to stage and don't see myself doing another television show in the near future," says the 27-year-old actor who bonded very well with every co-actor on the show, including Shweta Tiwari who played his mother. "Shweta is a good actress and a nice lady to work with. She is my age and I did find it odd playing her son. I don't how she is going to play a grandmother," he wonders.

Jennifer Winget
TV actress

"I began my career as a child artiste in films and then started acting TV soaps."
Maheka > How did you bag the role of "Sneha" in Kasauti Zindagi Kay (KZK)?
Jennifer Winget > I acted in a Balaji production, Koi Dil Mein Hai and later got a role in the serial Kkusum . And then, I got KZK.

Jaspreet_11 > Your birth date?
Jennifer Winget > It was yesterday on 30th of May.

Ani > How did you make a transition from modelling to acting?

Jaspreet_11 > Your favourite co-star in the serial KZK?
Jennifer Winget > That's a tough question. Sweta Tiwari(Prerna) and Ronit roy (Mr Bajaj).

Riya786 > Did you star in the movie Kuch Na Kaho as one of Abhishek's sisters? How was it working in that movie with Aishwarya and how old were you then?
Jennifer Winget > Yes, I was in the movie. I was overwhelmed at working with such big stars. They are such down-to-earth people. It was a very good experience working with them. I was 14 at the time.

Kali > Please tell us something about yourself.
Jennifer Winget > I am very much like my on screen character "Sneha" in real life. I am very fond of my parents. I am a very family person. I am doing my second year B.Com and I live for the day. I am from Mumbai.

Jennifer Winget > Yes, Anuraag was happy when Kasak (Surveen chawla) was getting married to Shravan (Pradeep). And also when he saw me after 20 years, for the first time. I don't think Ektaa Kapoor does injustice with Anuraag's role.

Higs > Given a chance, which heroines role would you like to do onscreen — Rani Mukherjee types or Priety Zinta and Aishwarya Rai type? Why?
Jennifer Winget > Rani Mukherjee type because of the films and the roles she chooses.

Jaspreet_11 > Your upcoming TV serial and on which channels?
Jennifer Winget > I am just doing KZK, as of now.

Doom > So Jennifer, is Bollywood your next step or you are satisfied with TV?
Jennifer Winget > Right now I am satisfied with TV. I don't know whether I would make an entry into Bollywood. But, as of now, I don't see that happening.

Jaspreet_11 > Will you ever call "Anuraag" your father in the serial?
Jennifer Winget > Right now I haven't shot a scene like that. Wait and watch.

Richa > Are you open to doing item numbers in Hindi films? Or you think you can get to do the main lead in a film... since you have already done a character role (sister of Abhishek) in a film.
Jennifer Winget > I would only like to do a main lead, not an item number. But, as of now, I am not looking at doing films.

Riya786 > HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!!!!!! You are doing a really good job as "Sneha" in KZK. Could you tell us when a guy will come into your life in the serial because it's sad to see you single when the rest of the cast has partners.
Jennifer Winget > Thanks a lot. I am very happy with my parents as of now. Ektaa Kapoor will decide when a guy will enter my life.

Jaspreet_11 > How is working with Anuraag (Cezanne Khan)?
Jennifer Winget > It's great fun. We keep doing masti (enjoy) all the time.

Clod > Jennifer, do you have any problem speaking in Hindi?
Jennifer Winget > No, not at all. I have been brought up in Mumbai and my mom is a Punjabi.

Hali > Why did you become an actress? What would you have been, if not an actress?
Jennifer Winget > I was very young when I started acting. The acting bug bit me and I was very happy doing it. It's fun. I would have been an air-hostess.

Jaspreet_11 > Your dream role?
Jennifer Winget > Rani Mukherjee, in BLACK.

Tina > Are you of a mixed breed? Haven't heard a second name like yours. Where are you from?
Jennifer Winget > I am not a mixed breed. My dad is a Christian. My mom is Punjabi and I am from Mumbai. Both my parents are Indian.

Riya786 > Can you relate to your on-screen character "Sneha" i.e. being soft-spoken and the one who loves her parents dearly or are you opposite to her?
Jennifer Winget > I am very close to my parents and love them totally, like "Sneha". But I may not be as soft spoken as she is.

On screen –Off screen: Manoj Bohra

This week we try and dissect Manoj Bohra, better known as Prem from Kasauti Zindagi Kay.

On screen: Prem
Prem is the first child of Prerna (Shewta Tiwari) and Anurag Basu (Cezanne Khan). He is very rude and doesn't care for anybody's feelings. In the serial, he rejects the love of Mukti (Tina Parekh) even though he slept with her. He even went to the extent of supporting his friend Sharad (Karan Singh) who raped Mukti. The character of Prem is negative. He hates emotions, family bonding and likes to stay alone. At least that was the case, till his character started turning positive.

Off screen: Manoj Bohra
Teejay Sidhu, wife of Bohra, tells us about the real life Manoj
"He is completely opposite. He is emotional. I'm practical sometimes, but he is not. Whenever, he is on the sets he keeps messaging me "I love you" and "had your lunch?" and stuff like that.

During lunch time he calls me and asks about my whereabouts. He is very romantic, caring, and protective but not possessive. He is also very disciplned and always keeps the house very clean. In short, he is a typical Virgo.

Whenever we go out for the dinner, people recognise him as Prem. They appreciate his role but sometimes the elderly people tease him saying, "Prerna maa ko tang mat karo." Whenever I go out, people often ask me how he is in real life? Is he like the same rude guy? But the fact is that in real life he is totally opposite. "He is very sweet."

    'I can't see myself as a 50-year-old father!'

Manoj Bohra quits Kasautii Zindagii Kay, makes Bollywood debut.

    NICOLE DASTUR

Manoj Bohra, the bad-turned-goodturned-bad again Prem of Kasautii Zindagii Kay is quitting the serial that made him a household name on television. But it's not a very easy decision, says the actor. "Leaving Kasautii... is a heartwrenching experience. I can't imagine my daily routine without Kasautii in it." But it's a decision the actor in him had to take, he says. "The time-leap just didn't convince me. I couldn't see myself playing a 50-year-old father of three! If I can't convince myself of the character, how can I convince the audience? Luckily, the director/ producer understood my professional concerns," says Manoj.

But even as one door shuts upon him, another one opens up. The actor will be making his Bollywood debut — he will be doing a cameo in Samir Seth's Fame. "I never plan my life or my career. The offer just came my way, and it sounded interesting. So why not? I'm quite adventurous by nature anyways," smiles Manoj.
However, on a more serious note, Manoj admits that Bollywood is on his agenda. "It's like graduation in high school. It's a transition: from theatre, you do television and then films. But at the end of the day, I consider my work more important than the medium through which I'm seen. I love acting, whether it's in films, on TV or on stage." Which medium does the actor find most challenging? "Theatre for sure! I s**t in my pants when I'm on stage! TV and films are like playing a war game on a videogame, but in theatre, you're on the battlefield!"
Yet, despite moving up the professional ladder, Manoj has not forgotten his smallscreen days. "I've not quit television per se. I probably never will. I am most grateful to this medium for the success it has showered upon me." Even as he sums up his professional life at this stage as "a series of fortunate events" and says he still doesn't know exactly where he's heading — "I leave the house with a prayer, I do my work and the rest is left to grace" — Manoj is excited about his second wedding. Yes, to his wife Teejay Sidhu again. "We'll be leaving for the US soon for our "wedding season part two", he chuckles, adding that he'll also be busy reviving his play which will be touring abroad in July.

    Woman I salute you!

    HITEN TEJWANI

I have high regards for Ekta Kapoor who has accomplished so much at a young age. To create a production house in the dimension of Balaji Telefilms is a big achievement in itself and to sustain it and still remain on top is laudable. I have personally seen her work hard and for late hours. She is great!
