Part 5
Somehow the night ended, yet Bani didn't know how. She cried for what seemed to be hours and hours. It was the longest night in Banis life. She had experienced her share of long nights. The night her father died, the night she married Jai Walia, the nights following the death of her precious child. In Banis mind one of the longest nights was the first night that she spent away from her husband, the same night she had found out she was pregnant. She had to leave him then because of what she thought he had done. Even though she wanted to hate him and punish that night she couldn't. Bani missed him so much that night. She missed the warmth of him sleeping next to her, she missed the fimiliar smell of his body next to hers, she missed him all together. That night seemed to not want to pass either. Now, looking back, that night went by with light speed compared to this one; and it was for one specific reason. In that night she knew that even though she wast with him, he was still with her, in her body, heart and soul. She knew in her heart that whereever he was his mind was thinking aobut her, even if it was for a split second. She was his and he was hers even if they were apart then.
This night, she had no such support. She cried and cried until there were no tears left. She didn't know when but somehow she ended up on the bed still huddeled in between Massi and Rano. She cried on the shoulder of the woman who was like a mother to her, and on the shoulder of one of the girls she had become a mother too. It was ironic how one was the shoulder Bani was crying on and the other had caused her to shed these tears. The night seemed to stretch on forever. Even when she had no tears left, she still felt like crying. Her body was wiped of energy and strength, the felt like she would shatter at any momemt. She was already shattered in mind, heart and soul...but Bani felt like in any minute she would phsically shatter too. She didn't know how but sme how she manged to fall asleep; but it took a while. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the picture of Jai kissing Pia and yelling that the baby was his. She saw pictures of them together, together in a way that Bani never imagined. She saw them being together, making love, both sprawled out on a bed. She had to shake her head to get that image out. Although it did very little good. Once she setteled she say images of Jai and herself, happy...or so she thought...and they too shattered. But somehow she managed to sleep, a restless sleep.
Bani's eyes opened at the first rays of light. It took her a minute to recall the events of the night b4. She looked around to see that Rano and Massi had both fallen asleep next to her, yet each still had a grip on each of her arms. Across form the bed was Anu and Raashi sleeping on the couch, not looking the least bit comfortable. They had been with her all night and Bani was touched. Her own flesh and blood had shattered her and others took the time to attempt to put her back together. Bani slowly got up and saw the after math of her rage. There was glass scattered all over the room. Her clothes, all the ones that held any meaning all lie on the floor some torn even. Near her vanity she saw her sindoor scattered all over the floor, almost like red blood. When she walked into the bathroom her eyes first went to the broken mangalsutra that lie on the bathroom counter. She faintly remembers coming into the shower and tearing it from her body. The ring she had gotten from Jai was there too. She took a shower to help clear her mind, but it did no good. She came out and closed the door which caused the girls and Massi to jolt awake. Once they got their bearings as to where they were and what happened they all looked at Bani. What they saw left them speechless, there was nothing to say. They understood her pain.
Ras- Bani mami aap please batiyeh..main aapki dressing change kardeti hoon.
(Bani just sat down)
M- Bani beti aab kaisi hai tu?
R- Didi..please kuch toh boliyeh...aap tik toh hai naa.
B- Main tik kaise hosakti hoon Rano, meri toh puri zindagi hi ujar gayi, kuch nahin bacha.
A- Bani mami...umm...main aapke liye jiuce lati hoon. (b4 Bani can say no Anu is gone)
M- Jaao tum log fresh hojaao. Aur Raashi zara dekh naa ke niche Ranveer aur baki ke log kaise hai. Thoda sa nashta bhi banadena...vaise toh khanne ka maan kisi ka nahin hoga...phir bhi.
Ras- Gi Massi...abhi gaya ..(reluctantly Rano and Raashi leave)
B- Massi aap bhi jaaiyeh naa...aap ko toh fresh hona hai...aur aapki dawa...
M- Nahin main..
B- Massi please...main...main todi dehr ke liye akela rehena chati hoon.
M- Tik hai...(Massi too leaves; leaving Bani to her silence)
Downstairs the guys wake up from their sleep to see Rano, Raashi and Massi coming downstairs. Anu is coming out of the kitchen when Massi tells her not to go up to Bani just yet. Massi tells they guys to go freshen up first b4 they start asking about Bani. They do as they are told, knowing that this is no time to argue with Massi. They all gather around the living room, the guys, while the girls are in the kitchen. Raashi comes out...
Ras- Aap log aajaiyeh...nasta tayar hai.
Adi- Nahin bete, aaj toh khane ka bilkul maan nahin hai.
Ras- Jaanti hoon papa lekin kush toh likiyeh.
T- Nahin Raashi hum toh kuch nahin khaa sakte.
Anu- Rohit tum..
Roh- Nahin Anu...mera bhi maan nahin hai.
Ras- Um...Ranveer aap? Pushkar?
Ran- Nahin...
Pus- Main bhi.
(Massi comes out)
Adi- Aare Massi...aab Bani kaisi hai?
M- Kaisi hogi...uski zindagi barbad hogayi...woh khud barbad hogayi...
Pus- Massi lekin...
Just then Jai walks in, seems like he has been up all night.
J- Massi...Bani kaisi hai?
(No one says anything to Jai. They all just look at him with disgust and contempt.)
J- Please koi mujhe batao, Bani kaise hai...woh tik toh hai naa?
T- Jai tu toh.....
Tarun stops mid way when everyones gaze turns to the top of the stairs. There they see Bani and they are all shocked; but no one more than Jai. Bani is coming down the stairs like a zombie. In her hand is a suitcase, but that's not what kills Jai; her appearance kills him. Banis eyes are red and swollen like she has cried for hours, which he knows she has. She has no sindoor, no mangalsutra and the ring he gave her was gone too; even her hands were bandaged up. What killed Jai the most was the fact that Bani was wearing a white sari...full white...blinding white. Jai runs up to Bani but she backs away from him. He keeps attempting to come closer but Bani keeps backing away; and she has a look of terror in her eyes. Having seen enough Pushkar and Ranveer come and stand infront of Bani to block Jai and from behind him Tarun and Adi pull Jai aside. Not paying attention to the Jai asks...
J- Bani..OMG Bani...tum tik toh ho naa.? Tumhari haath ko kya hua? OMG...yeh chot kaisi aayi tumhe?
R- Kyun "jiju"...aapko paata nahin...kaal raath meri behen ek vidwah bangayi. Didi ki paati kaal raath margaya. Issiliyeh kaal raath ko didi ne aapne hi hatoon se khud ke churiyaan tod di. Aapne hatoon se didi ne aapne mang suni kardi, aapne hatoon se didi ne aapne mangalsutra toda hai. Aaise kismat toh bohot kaam logo ko milti hai. Issiliye toh didi ne safed saari pehene hai.
J- Nahin Bani...main hoon naa...tumhara paati main hoon...
B- NAHIN!!! Aap mera kuch nahin hai, kuch nahin! (and she breaks down in front of everyone)
M- Bani bete tum kahaa jaa rahiho? Aagar iss ghaar se koi jayega toh woh Jai hai, tum nahin.
B- Nahin Massi, main yahaa nahin rehe sakti. Iss ghaar ki haar ek kone mein, haar ek jaga paar meri zindagi bassi hui hai. Haar ek dewaar se meri yadeein judi hui hai. Aagar main yahaa rahungi toh main nahin seh paungi. Jaab mera ghaar hi nahin raha toh yahaa kyun rukna. Nahin Massi main nahin ruksakti yahaa.
M- Paar tu jayegi kahaan?
B- Paata nahin...
Pus- Mere saath, Bani mere saath jayegi. Mera ghaar bhi uska ghaar hai.
M- Lekin....jaa beti tu jaa...main janti hoon ki aagar tu yahaa ruk gayi toh to saach mein marjayegi.
B- Massi, main toh jiteji margayi...aab saach yah jhut se kya leena dhena.
Bani takes blessing from Massi and Dadi (lets say she was there the whole time). Raashi, Anu and Rano all hug her and they all cry. Adi takes her bag as Pushkar takes her by the shoulder to take her outside. As Bani passes Jai she gives him one last glance and as if on cue her eyes fill with tears. She tries to blink them away but they fall. She turns away wiping her tears and heads to the door. As she is about to step out someone comes up to her and says...
"Toh aap jarahi hai iss ghaar se?"
