Akshay Kumar, who appeared on the finale episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, recently made a tongue-in-cheek remark about the firing incident at Kapil Sharma’s café in Canada. The actor, known for his quick wit, referred to the controversy during his banter with the host.
The season ended with Akshay as the closing guest, where he matched Kapil’s humour with light jibes of his own. While Kapil spoke about Akshay’s diverse work, the actor turned the tables, bringing up Kapil’s latest venture.
Akshay references Canada cafe firing
During their exchange, Akshay said, “Teen season Netflix pe kar chuka hai yeh. Uss pehle Sony pe tha, usse pehle Colors pe. Abhi do filmein kar raha hai. Isne apna restaurant khol liya aur itni aamdani hai ke waha goliyan bhi chali.” His quip pointed to the August firing outside Kap’s Cafe in Canada, where no injuries were reported.
The incident had been linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, with member Harry Boxer claiming responsibility. Reports suggested the attack was in response to Salman Khan’s presence on the show’s opening episode. Threats were issued against anyone collaborating with the actor, though Kapil himself has not commented publicly since the episode.
Legal trouble for the show
Amid the humour, the comedy series has also landed in legal controversy. Producer Firoz A Nadiadwala has sent a Rs 25 crore legal notice to Netflix and the makers, accusing them of using the Hera Pheri character Baburao without authorisation.
The dispute stems from a sketch performed by comedian Kiku Sharda, who imitated Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, a role played by Paresh Rawal. Nadiadwala argued that Baburao is a registered trademark and part of a creative legacy. “Baburao is not just a character, but the soul of Hera Pheri. Culture must be preserved, not exploited,” he said in a statement.
The notice cites alleged violations under copyright and trademark law, demanding the segment be removed from all platforms, along with a public apology and assurance against future use. Failure to comply, Nadiadwala warned, could lead to civil and criminal proceedings.
