PART 19

Jai: Agar tum mujhe suits se nikaalke jeans pehena sakti hai, to main bhi tumhe sari ke badle dress mein nahi dekhsakta? … You look beautiful.

Bani smiles shyly and they get back into the car.

They spend the rest of the day driving around the city visiting the beautiful Edinburgh Castle, the gardens and the lakes. Bani is delighted by the quaint little shops, the beautiful gardens, the breath-taking views. Jai is delighted by a breath-taking view as well – but it's not Edinburgh he's looking at!!

Evening draws near and their driver takes them back to the hotel. Bani steals a secretive glance at her husband. He is staring contentedly out of the window, a small smile playing on his lips. She rests her head on his shoulder and wonders what surprise he has up his sleeve now!

They walk into the lobby of the hotel and back to their suite.

Bani goes out onto the balcony to watch the sun set. Jai follows her. Standing behind her he wraps his arms around her waist and rests his chin on her shoulder. As the sun sets, the colours that light up the sky are so beautiful, reminding her a little of the sunsets in Mt. Abu.

Bani: Thank you Jai.

Jai: Kis liye Bani?

Bani: Mujhe itna pyaar karne ke liye. Mujhe ghar wapas lane ke liye. Mera birthday celebrate karne ke liya itna kuch….

Jai: Raat abhi khatam nahin hui hai Bani.

She turns and looks at him in surprise. She knew he was planning something else, she could tell by his cheeky smile!

Jai: Tum neeche restaurant mein jaake betho, mein abhi aata hoon.

Bani: Akele?

Jai: Mein abhi aaya Bani, jao jaake restaurant mein beth jao.

She sighs and shakes her head at him and leaves the suite. He quickly runs to the phone and dials reception.

Jai: She is on her way down, is everything ready…?

Meanwhile, Bani makes her way through the lobby towards the hotel restaurant. The place seems unusually quiet!! She catches her reflection in a mirror and is surprised at herself all over again! She was used to salwar kameez, sari's, and at work she had worn suits. She wasn't used to looking … … like this! Oh well, she had only worn this on Jai's request. She found it very hard to refuse him….

She walks towards the large glass doors of the hotel restaurant, covered by pink silk drapes, in line with the general deco of the hotel. Just as she reaches for the handle the doors open from the inside into a large dark room. She takes a few steps forward and the doors shut behind her.

She glances at the floor to see little lights light up one by one, creating a pathway into the centre of the room. A single spotlight illuminates a round table with two chairs. She walks towards it and sees a beautiful bouquet of roses on one chair.

The spotlight widens and Bani looks around at the faintly lit, beautifully decorated room. She picks the flowers up and reads the card.

"Tumhe dil mein basaaye rakhta hoon… Aur duniya ko bhulaaye rakhta hoon

Tumhe meri nazar na lag jaaye… Apni nazar jukha ke rakhta hoon

Tera diwana hoon, inkaar nahi… Kaise kehdoon ke tujhse pyar nahi

Kuch shararat teri aankho ki bhi hai…Main akela hi to gunehgaar nahi"

Never in her life had she read such beautiful words written to her. Bani's eyes fill with tears of happiness as she read them over and over again.

She hears the door open and turns around to see Jai standing in the doorway, dressed in a black suit, looking so good it made her knees weak!

He began to walk towards her. He opened his arms and she ran straight into them. They hugged each other tightly and tears of pure joy fell from Bani's eyes. She whispered into his ear…

Bani: Itna pyaar mat karo mujhse Jai, mein apne aap ko sambhaal nahin paoongi!

Jai: Main hoon na… jaha bhi jaogi, mujhe paogi. Ek baar kho diya hai tumhe Bani, aisa dukh mein phir bardaasht nahin kar paoonga.

He takes her hand and leads her towards the dancefloor. She smiles as she hears the sound of soft melodious music…

"Nazre bichaade… pehre laga de dil pe… par dil kisi ki na maane…

Kaaton pe chalke… sholon mein jalke, roke… milke rahenge deewaane… ho…

Chaahat ki lau to… aandhi me bhi jhilmilaaye… shaayad yahi to pyar hai…

Ek ajnabi sa… ehsaas dil ko sataaye…shaayad yahi to pyar hai…"

She rests her head on his chest and feels his arm around her waist as they slowly dance to the beautiful song that seemed to describe their feelings so perfectly. She loses herself in his arms, not conscious of making any movement. Her body moves in tune with his, as if controlled by something other than her own mind.

The song comes to an end much too soon and she unwillingly pulls herself away from him. He leads her back to the table and pulls her seat out for her like the gentleman he is. Waiters come out with dinner and champagne, which Jai pours for both of them.

For the first time in… ever, they… really talk. Listening to each other share their hopes and dreams and fears. She realises how little she knew about this man who had become her reason to live, and the same becomes evident to him. The night draws on as they enjoy each others company and glass after glass of champagne. Jai becomes even more enamoured with this stunning woman as they talk about their childhood, their family, the circumstances of their own marriage.

Jai: Ab koi kuch bhi kahe, mujhe is baat pe 100% yakeen ho gaya hai – jo hota hai, voh vaake hi achche ke liye hota hai. Pia se me sirf isiliye mila tha taake me tumhaare saath bandhsaku, aur is baat ke liye me kitna thankful hoon shaayad tum kabhi na jaan pao.

The champagne has turned her cheeks red and each time Jai stares at her with those dark soul-penetrating eyes and she blushes ever further. To Jai, no-one has ever looked more beautiful than his wife tonight.
