PART 17

Morning comes and the bright sunlight shines in through the large windows of their suite. Bani stirs and opens her eyes blinking in the bright light. She turns her head to look at Jai and finds that while sleeping she had moved very close to him and his arm is now holding her waist. Before now she might well have been surprised, but this morning it felt…. right. She was comfortable in his arms and could have slept there forever.

He moves his head a little and a cheeky idea enters her head. She uses the end of her long silky hair to brush his cheek. He stirs and sweeps it away. She giggles quietly and does it again. He rubs his cheek again and shifts his body. She does it a third time hardly able to muffle her giggles when his eyes open and he looks straight at her making her jump! She tries to move away but he keeps hold of her waist and pulls her back towards him. Struggling against his clutch is pointless!

Bani giggles even more: Jai please… jaane do na!!

Jai, with his deep sexy laugh: Tumhe kya lagta hai Mrs Walia, mein so raha tha?!

He nuzzles his face into her neck sending pleasant shivers down her spine.

Jai: Mein kabse apni pyaari si biwi ko sote hue dekh raha tha. Tumhe aankhen kholte dekha to apni aankhen bandh karli!!

Bani gasp: Badmaash!!

She breaks away and runs to the bathroom. She turns around and sticks her tongue out at him, slamming the door and locking it. Jai sighs deeply and leans back onto the bed with a smile.

"kabse hai dil mein mere… armaan kai ankahe… inko tu sunle aaja… chaahat ke rang chadha jaa…kehna kabhi to mera maan hai… jiya dhadak dhadak…jiya dhadak dhadak… jiya dhadak dhadak jaaye……""

Sometime later Bani comes out of the bathroom and Jai cannot take his eyes away from her. She is dressed in a light pink sari with faint gold embroidery. She wears no make-up and is towelling her hair dry. She looks so naturally beautiful that Jai wonders how he could ever have felt anything close to hate for her. Their eyes meet and she smiles faintly at him and goes to the cupboard to take his clothes out. She lays them on the bed and walks towards the dressing table.

She pretends to be concentrating on her hair but he can see her glancing at him in the mirror. He stares intensely, knowing it is making her blush and enjoying every second. His eyes rove her body as he gets up and walks towards her. She has been trying to tie her blouse ki dori but sees him advancing and stops.

Her eyes meet his in the mirror as he silently walks over, brushes his fingertips against her cool skin and ties the dori for her. His eyes never leave hers. He pushes her hair back over her shoulder and smiles at the effect he is having on her. Leaning past her he reaches for his towel and smoothly turns towards the bed to pick up his clothes and go into the bathroom.

The bathroom door shuts and Bani breathes a sigh of relief. She proceeds to put on her mangalsutra and sindoor, then kangane and kaajal, brushing her hair – the whole while thinking of Jai. No-one had ever affected her in the way he did – and all he had done was tie her dori and reach for his towel!! What would her haalat be if he…

The phone rang breaking her reverie, startling her! She shook her head and sat down on the bed, picking up the phone.

Bani: Hello?

Dadi: BANI BETA?! KAISI HO PUTTAR?!! JANAMDIN MUBAARAK HO!!

Bani moves the phone away from her ear as Dadi shouts loudly! She hears Jigs in the background – "woh Scotland mein hai, chaand pe nahin!! Honestly!! Meri taraf se badhai de dena, mein bahar jaa rahi hu."

Dadi: Suna puttar??

They both laugh.

Bani: Thank you dadi!! Kaisi ho aap? Aur baaki sab?!

Dadi: Hum sab theek hai puttar! Tum or Jai kaise ho? Kaisa laga tumhaara surprise?!!

Bani: Aap bhi na Dadi – bade chhupe rustam nikle!!! Aap sab ko pata tha aur mujhe kuch pata nahin chalne diya?!! I can't believe ke me apna birthday Edinburgh mein bitaa rahi hoon!! Kaash ke aap sab yaha hote!!

Dadi: Tumhaari khushi saaf sunay de rahi hai beta, aise hi muskuraate raho tum dono! Bahut dino ke baad itne sukhi lag rahe ho… achcha lagta hai.

Bani can hear tears in Dadi's voice and begins to feel her own eyes well up.

The bathroom door opens and Jai comes out dressed in the blue jeans and white cotton shirt she has chosen for him. Ordinarily he would have felt uncomfortable in such casual attire, but she had chosen it for him – how could he argue?

He sees Bani sitting with her back towards him, talking on the phone. He goes to the dressing table to see that she has laid out his watch, wallet, mobile phone, and rumaal, and smiles to himself. He finds it hard to remember a time when he used to do these things himself!

Bani hears Jai come out of the bathroom and quickly brushes the tears from the corners of her eyes.

Dadi: Ek minute puttar, Aditya tumse baat karna chahata hai.

… Adi: Bani? Hello Bani!! Happy Birthday Mrs Walia, kaisi ho tum?!

Bani: Mein bilkul theek hu Aditya uncle, aapki awaaz sunke mein bahut khush hoon!

Adi: Toh kitne saal ki hui ho? Come on Bani, apno se raaz nahin chupaaya karte!!

Bani, laughing: Aditya uncle, aap ko meri umar bhi nahin pata?!! Aapki employee reh chuki hoon me, aapko toh yeh pata hona chaahiye na!

Adi: hmmmm…. Voh hasi, voh awaaz, voh bacho ki tarah rona… sola saal?!!

Bani: KYA?!! Adi uncle mein bachcho ki tarha roti hoon?!! Teheriye aap, mein aake Jigyaasa auntie ko bol doongi ke aap unhe pachaas saal ki busurg bataa rahe the!!

Adi: Bani marvaogi kya?!!! Maine aisa kab kaha?!!!

Bani: Aap ne toh nahin kaha lekin yeh baat Jigyaasa auntie to nahin jaanti na?!! Phir bhagwaan hi aapko bachaye unse!!

Jai laughs to himself at the silly banter between his wife and his best friend. The doorbell rings and he quickly goes to the front room to answer the door.

Adi: Ok ok Bani, tum jeetgayi!! Ab mein kabhi mazaak me bhi aisa kuch nahin kahoonga – you know exactly how to get your revenge don't you?!!

They both laugh. Aditya wishes her a good trip and they put the phone down. Bani finishes combing her hair and suddenly realises she cannot hear a sound from Jai! She assumed he had gone to watch television or something and goes to the front room to look for him.

She turns the corner and suddenly hears a loud bang – she jumps with fright, covers her ears and tightly closes her eyes.
