Nupur Talwar slams murder based serial

NDTV Correspondent
Monday, June 9, 2008 (New Delhi)
Aarushi Talwar's mother, Nupur Talwar has a plea to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, ''Please don't commercialise our tragedy.''

She has demanded that any television serials being planned on the girl's life and murder be banned.

This plea comes after Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Films announced a plan to make a television serial based on the murder case, which the CBI is still investigating.

Fourteen-year-old Aarushi Talwar and Talwar's domestic help Hemraj were found murdered in the house with all of the other family members present.

Aarushi's father, Dr Rajesh Talwar is the prime accused in the murder.

With all the media attention to the investigations and apparent bungling of the case by UP police, Aarushi murder has gained lot of interest.

Nupur Talwar moves child commission against serial on Aarushi

Nupur Talwar, the mother of murdered teenager Aarushi, moved the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) against Balaji Telefilms' plans to make a soap opera on the life of the victim whose father is the prime suspect of the murder.

Accompanied by her friends and relatives, Talwar, a prominent dentist, came to meet NCPCR authorities and urged them to stop any attempt to make a TV serial on Aarushi.

NCPCR member Sadhya Bajaj said that Talwar has requested that Balaji Telefilms head Ekta Kapoor should be stopped from making a TV opera on her daughter.

"We are going to serve a notice to Balaji Telefilms telling them not to make a serial on a child who is no more and where the investigation (into her murder) is pending. This is all for TRPs (television rating points). This is not the way to exploit a child's story when she is not alive," Bajaj said.

Kapoor is planning to include Aarushi's life and death in her popular soap opera Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii.

Arushi's body was found at her Noida residence on May 16. While police initially suspected missing domestic help Hemraj, his body was also found from the same home the next day.

Her father Rajesh Talwar has been arrested for the twin murder. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the case.

Bajaj said Nupur Talwar had already approached the information and broadcasting ministry against Kapoor's move and has written a two-page note to information and broadcasting secretary Asha Swarup.

The 'K'ueen of soaps turns 33!

Celebrating Ekta Kapoor - the woman who revolutionised Indian television

With her new mega serial launching and the woman turning 33, here's an ode to the absolute 'K'ueen of Indian television soaps – Ekta Kapoor! Let's trace the K-factor that brought her success and fame. We have listed some memorable soaps that started with the letter 'K' and created history for Jeetendra's little daughter.

Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

Who doesn't know about this one? A favourite at TV awards, this serial has made history by having almost five to six generations in the same house (Wonder what Ba's age is now?). This story about the Virani parivaar has made a lot of things popular – like theplas, Jai Shri Krishna, tulsi (the plant), joint families and so on.

We all know how the country cried when the original Mihir died in the show and got replaced by another one – Inder Kumar, whom we hated. Ekta replaced Inder with Ronit Roy whom we fell in love with, soon enough. And today, though a lot of us might be confused with what is happening on the show since god knows how many characters and generations have happened in the family, we still love the way the serial takes dramatic twists and turns almost every day!

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii

Another joint family drama which took similar turns as the show that followed it, Kahaani has also stayed on air since times immemorial. If Tulsi is the star of Kyunkii, Parvati holds her own in this one. If Mihir decides to marry Mandira, Om does too. These two serials have been running parallel since their very inception and still there are loads of people who watch both!

Kasturi

Another woman centric soap, Kasturi is about, well, Kasturi – a simple middle-class girl and her love story (obviously, the eternal, timeless, undying sort) with Robbie Sir. And don't we all love Karan Patel as the rock star Robbie Sir? Marriages, remarriages, amnesia, near death scenarios, good boys turning to bad boys overnight and saas-bahu drama – this serial portrays all the quintessential Ekta Kapoor serial traits.

Kasautii Zindagi Kay
We thought it would never get over. But it did. Well, that is what makes Ekta Kapoor's soaps so successful – you expect something and the opposite happens. Kasautii... was the story of Anurag and Prerna – again it was more about Prerna than Anurag. Come on, guys, by now we know that Ekta Kapoor only makes women centric serials. She has women heroes, women villains – only women and more women. Men are just 'by the way' in her soaps.

Kkusum

If it's a K-serial, we generally know what it would be about. Mostly, the main protagonist would be a girl. Here, it was Kkusum. And she obviously was a middle-class girl with good values and who could recite the gayatri mantra 24 times a day. Well, maybe not really. But this made Nausheen Ali Sardar and Anuj Saxena a huge success and though they had a fight with Ekta, they made up and were back shooting a party scene in another of her many soaps.

Kasamh Se
The show that made Prachi Desai
famous, Kasamh Se was the story of three sisters and their lives. This moved on to become the story of the eldest sister Bani, her husband (Ram Kapoor) and her middle sister played by Roshni Chopra. And that moved on to a story of jealousy and betrayal. And now Prachi herself has moved to big screen to star in Farhan Akhtar's Rock On. But this serial surely did a lot for her career!

Kahiin To Hoga

Rajeev Khandelwal as Sujal Grewal stole our hearts in the show. The story about five sisters, this serial was out and out a love story of Rajeev Khandelwal and Aamna Sharif. And we also heard that the two took their reel life a bit too seriously in real life too.

Kahin Kisii Roz

This was a serial of Sudha Chandran aka Ramola Sikand. The scheming plotting villainous saas of the unsuspecting bahu Mouli Ganguly, this serial was about the clash of these two women with Yash Tonk the stepson and husband hanging in the middle. We will always remember the big bindis and bold dressing of Ramola Sikand since this serial set the trend of fashionable vamps on the small screen.

Kayamath

Ekta Kapoor is often considered the person responsible for women's lib on the small screen. Her powerful female trio that starts at 10 pm IST with Parvati and then Tulsi is completed by Panchi Bora at 11 pm with Kayamath. And well, this is the serial where we all fell in love with Shabbir Ahluwalia – the rugged, bad boy who symbolises eternal love for the female protagonist.

Kahaani Hamaare Mahabharat Ki

Mahabharata – the epic tale of India has been made and remade into animation movies, TV serials and so on, and every time it has been called Mahabharata. But when Ekta decided to make Mahabharata it had to start with...you guessed it right, 'K'. So, now there were several options – like Kunti (Ekta is also known for her women-centric serials) and she could have been the main protagonist; or Kauravas (she also is known for the mighty villains, you see) but she thought otherwise.

The epic serial will finally be called Kahaani Hamaare Mahabharat Ki. After all, there always has to be that special Ekta touch, right?

Happy Birthday, Ekta!

Ekta and her serials may only consist of women but there is surely no dearth of men in her life. With good-looking men strewn over all her serials (c'mon she gave us Rajeev Khandelwal, Ram Kapoor, Anuj Saxena and the likes), Ekta has her share of a few good men too. And once we even heard the K-queen was all set to find her King in the man governed by the letter 'K' – Karan Johar. They sure would have made a kuintessentially happy kouple! Here's wishing her a very happy birthday. And we hope she finds the King of her heart soon enough.

Ali Asgar maintains his consistency

Ali Asgar aka Kamal of Kahaani has been consistently nominated in the Favourite Devar category. This year too he has bagged a nominated in the Critics Choice Favourite Devar category.

About maintaining his consistency at the nominations, Ali says, "Yes, it's become like a tradition for me and it's amazing that even after so many years neither the audience nor I have got bored of the character. Also the way the character of Kamal has shaped up over the years has been different thanks to Balaji .From a positive one to a negative one and then to funny one. So it is a remarkable achievement for me."

Speaking about Star Parivaar Awards, Ali says, "Star Parivaar Awards has become like a family now to me. It definitely motivates an actor. After all an award is a result of one's hard work. Initially, winning was important for me but as the years have passed, winning or losing has stopped affecting me." Further, jokingly Ali adds, "But yes not getting nominated in the same category of Favourite Devar does affect me."

Ali performed at the previous Star Parivaar Awards and considers himself to be a complete entertainer but would not be performing this year. "Even if I am not performing, I will always be there for the awards nite," Kamal signs off.

Youngsters rally against Ekta Kapoor on blogs

NEW DELHI: Blogosphere is agog with outrage over TV producer Ekta Kapoor's reported plans to serialise the murder of teenager Aarushi Talwar, with youngsters reacting angrily on social networking sites to any such move.

Calling Kapoor's reported decision as 'mean' and intended to 'cash in on the death of an innocent child', youngsters have rallied against the soap opera queen on social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook.

Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms has already earned the ire of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, which has written to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to stop it from serialising the Aarushi murder case.

Various online social fora on these networking sites campaigning for justice for the girl have been flooded with postings flaying the reported move.

"This is the utmost decline of humanity. The poor girl lost her life and now people are cashing in on her death. This is so mean. How could they do this just to increase the TRP of their serials?" writes a member of the Orkut community 'Tribute to Aarushi Talwar'.

The criticism came after the promos of the popular TV serial 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki', having a close resemblance to the murder of Aarushi, were aired.

However, Balaji Telefilms has denied that story of the serial has any resemblance to the murder case.

"We are saying that the characters in the planned episode in the serial concerned have no resemblance to people in the actual crime. And if at all there is any, it is purely coincidental," Creative Head of Balaji Telefilms Nivedita Basu
said.

However, some members do not find anything wrong in serialising the murder case.

"It is a free country and everyone is free to express an opinion on every issue. It is a bold step to put light on such issues and to provide the common man with such re-enactments so that the common man can understand both the sides and may improve their sensibilities," writes a member on a community on Orkut.

The dramatic turn of events surrounding popular Balaji soap Kahani Ghar Ghar kii is no less appalling than the shocking murder case of Aarushi that rocked Delhi a few weeks ago. In an attempt to resurrect the sinking TRPs of her soap, Ekta Kapoor apparently wanted to reconstruct the real life murder of the teenager as her new track. According to reports that did the rounds, the murder plot that dealt with the issue of honour killing was to be aired the coming week, between Monday and Thursday, in the popular Balaji daily soap.

Parvati's rebellious and wayward granddaughter Tanu was to be murdered by one of the members of the Agrawal family. The track was expected to add a major spike to the show's TRPs. But that was not to be.

In a new turn of events, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) approached the Information and broadcasting Ministry expressing concern after Aarushi's mother, Nupur Talwar sought its help in stopping Balaji Telefilms from using the family tragedy to earn TRPs. Alleging that Balaji was planning to show her daughter's life and death on television and claiming that the production house will incorporate the Aarushi killing as part of its plan to glorify honour killing, Arushi's mother pleaded with the commission that the serial makers should not be allowed to go ahead with the track.

In order to avoid getting into legal hassles, Balaji has promptly dropped the honour killing track. When contacted, Nivedita Basu, chief creative head of Balaji Telefilms, refused to comment saying, "We have nothing to say in the matter. You should contact the channel."

However, Star Plus authorities conveniently washed their hands off this, and blatantly denies that such a track was planned in the first place. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Star India also expressed shock and disgust at the recent media reports rife with speculations about the storyline of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.

When contacted, Anupama Mondloi, Star India's senior creative head, denied that such a track was planned for Kahani.

However, the honour killing track inspired by Aarushi's murder was indeed planned and that cannot be denied. What the channel heads forgot is that they had given out a media release last week which said, "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki will be taking a major turn with its track bearing a close similarity to the Aarushi murder case in the coming week (June 16 to 19). Parvati's granddaughter, Tanu will soon get murdered leaving the Agrawal family in shock when they find out that the murderer is one of them. The murder will deal with the issue of honour killing."

That's not all. When this correspondent interviewed Akshita, who plays Tanu, on June 11, the actress admitted that Tanu's murder was supposed to be a case of honour killing. Elaborating on the role, Akshita further said, "Tanu is a total spoilt brat. She loves partying and doesn't listen to anyone. Her behaviour and way of dressing doesn't go down well with her family," she said.

How did a project with Balaji Telefilms come your way?
It was a surprise for me when I got a call from Balaji Telefilms. All this while, I have grown up seeing their serials on TV and considering the fact that I had no prior experience in acting, it was quite an opportunity for me. I was just returning home from a shoot when I got a call from a Mumbai number. At first I thought it was a joke that my friends were playing on me but later I came around. The role that I was being offered was the lead role of Kuchh Is Tara.

But you finally landed in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii...
Yes, the lead in Kuchh Is Tara is a Marathi girl and I needed to have a strong Marathi accent for that. Since I had just begun with my Hindi classes, it would take me some more time to grasp Marathi. So they decided to me cast me as Shivangi in Kahaani....

So, did you have to audition for the role?
When I got the call from Balaji Telefilms, all I was asked to do was e-mail a few pictures of mine. I went there last September and didn't have to go for any audition. I had a bit of a problem with Hindi though. I was only told the next day that I was to act in Kahaani... and that too my first few days of shooting was with Sakshi.

Saakshi and most of the cast of Kahaani... have been there from the very beginning and are all good actors. As a novice, how did you feel?
I was extremely nervous initially as my part required me to behave very rudely with Saakshi. It was the first time that I was facing the camera and on top of that such a way to begin! But she was so very supportive that I sailed through smoothly. In fact, all of them have been so nice to me that I never was made to feel like a newcomer. I did have some problems with my dialogue delivery but they all helped me overcome my hesitance.

How was the experience of facing the camera for the first time?
(Chuckle) I wish it never happened the way it did. My entry, which was my first scene, had to be reshot.

Is it only the Balaji camp that you will work for now?
The way things are right now, yes. I am doing a cameo role in Kasamh Se of Santoshi mata. It's a
mythological character. Thirty days are blocked for these serials, where do I get the time for more? I have also been offered the role of Satyavati in 9X's Kahaani Mahabharat Ki but that hasn't been finalised yet. In fact, I couldn't do the Airtel ad that finally Bidita did because of date problems.

Are these daily soaps taking a toll on your health?
There have been times when we shot at a stretch for 44 hours. I probably just returned home to be called back again for dubbing. Time management goes for a complete toss. Also eating outside is another problem that I have to cope with on a daily basis. In fact, I have put on weight since I started eating food on the sets.

How do you rate your performance?
There have been times when I have come home and watched the repeat telecast of Kahaani... and feel that I am not doing too bad a job, considering the fact that I am a fresher. Of course, I still need to improve on a lot of points and I am working hard on it.

Finally, have you met Ekta Kapoor herself?
Yes, in fact, just after landing in Mumbai I was taken to her house first.

Stars balance Mahabharat k-serials schedule

Ekta Kapoor's Kahaani Hamari Mahabharat Kii has the topmost television actors being part of the project. We spoke to the creative director of the serial Suraj and also to some of the actors about how the shooting schedules are managed.

Suraj informs, "There are no hassles happening regarding the shooting schedules since the shooting itself happens on days when the stars do not have to shoot for their other serials - be it Saakshi Tanwar or Kiran Karmarkar who play the roles of Ganga and Shantanu in the serial. They have already finished their shooting schedule without any change in their other serials' schedule."

Speaking about Chetan Hansraj, who will play Bheem in the serial, Suraj says, "Well, Chetan still has to start shooting for the serial. Regarding him too the dates are not clashing with any of his other commitments."

Ronit Roy plays the character of Bhishma Pitama in the serial and is even seen as Mihir in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. But Anil Nagpal, the scriptwriter of Kyunki is not too worried. "Ronit has already started shooting for Mahabharat and his track in Kyunkii still continues as per the schedule without any delay."

Kiran Karmarkar, who plays the role of Shantanu in Mahabharat, has already finished shooting his part for the epic. He says he too did not face any difficulty. "Since, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kahaani Hamari Mahabharat Kii belong to the same production house, I did not have to decide on my shooting schedule at all. Wherever the production house used to direct me I used to go there. It was fun working in the serial and there was no special preparation that I had to do for the character so I am looking forward to it."

To Gattu Bhai from Ekta Didi with Love

The whole world and its favourite television guide have been wondering why Ekta Kapoor allowed her favourite actress Prachi Desai to work opposite Farhan Akhtar in Rock On when she has been openly unresponsive and hostile to the idea of her other actors leaving her company to pursue the big screen.

Now it can be told.

Rock On director Abhishek Kapoor better known as Gattu, is Ekta's favourite cousin. And there's absolutely nothing she would refuse him.

Ekta admits her fondness for Abhishek 'Gattu' Kapoor.

"Yes, he's my favourite brother after Tusshar. Gattu is my dad's own sister's son. So we're very close. We don't meet that often any longer. We're both busy doing our own thing.

When we were younger we used to bond very regularly. We've been on holidays together, just Gattu and me. We don't meet that often any more. But he's my coolest Bhaiyya. And there's nothing I wouldn't do for him."

When Coolest Bhaiyya decided to cast Farhan Akhtar as the lead in Rock On he was on the look-out for a fresh face for the female lead.Gattu seemed to running into stumbling blocks.

Says Ekta, "Gattu asked me about Prachi. And I immediately agreed, " says Ekta.

And never mind it it meant Balajee losing its blue-eyed girl.

Says Ekta, ""Honestly, Prachi is like part of our family. My father, mother and I have adopted her. But as a producer I tortured the hell out of her.

I made her work harder than any of my actors just because I was so close to her. Prachi feels that was unfair. But I didn't want to be accused of favouritism. Now she's moved on.

I want Prachi to give films a sincere try. I've told her to keep away from television for 6-8 months to focus on films. If, God Forbid, it doesn't work out we're there for her."
