'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' takes a generation leap on 15 November

MUMBAI: Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii is all set to take yet another 18 year leap by introducing its generation next on 15 November.

With the new generation, Parvati Bhabhi will also be in a never seen before avatar - her wardrobe, her style, her appearance will change and the new makeover is given to her by designer Manish Malhotra.

Parvati has always been the ideal bahu for the Aggarwal family, even when Shruti (Om-Parvati's daughter), Krishna (Kamal-Nivedita's son) and Monalika (Avantika-Ajay's daughter) took the centre stage. And now, it's once again time to hand over the stage to the younger generations of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii - the primary characters leading this new generation being - Sanskar (Shruti's son) and Mythili (Parvati's accountants daughter), Adi (Shikhar's son) and Pragati (Gun's daughter).

The Current Story:

The story currently revolves around the three younger ladies of the family Shruti (Parvati's daughter), Gun (Parvati's bahu) and Sonu (Gaurav's daughter), who share the news of their pregnancy with the family and Parvati comes to know about Ranu (Rajeshwari Mehra) and her relation with Suyash Mehra. Krishna gets killed in exactly the same way as Om was murdered. Parvati goes onto find out that the cause and means of the murder and also leaves some proof on the murder site. She is sent to jail for the murder charge of Krishna and Om with all the hatred from everyone including Shruti her own daughter, where she meets Narayani Devi (Aroona Irani) who becomes her Godmother and helps her in making her new life.

The story going forward:

After spending many years of her life in Benares, Parvati comes back to Mumbai. Parvati, who has always been the Sita, now takes on the teachings of the Bhagwad Gita as she prepares to fight her own to win back her own. Apno ke liye, apno ke khilaf. It is a side of Parvati that one has never seen before, as she dons a modern persona, who will employ every means to defeat her enemies.

The generation next:

The four main characters of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's generation next are Mythili, Pragati, Sanskar and Adi. They are the young teenagers who define their own mode of living and bring a colour and set of values to the show that has not been explored before. Along with a passionate love story, the generation next of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii will bring freshness and verve to the show.

What makeover?

When A-list designer Manish Malhotra and television czarina Ekta Kapoor announced a makeover for Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii, we were an excited bunch. Especially since the ugly duckling in question was none other than Parvati bhabhi (Sakshi Tanwar). We hear she was itching to get out of her chiffon saris and step into some sexy denims (so were we).

So we waited with bated breath for Parvati's all-new avatar, but what we got instead was the biggest anti-climax of recent times. Far from a makeover, all that Parvati has got is a different hairdo and maybe a better shade of lip-gloss.

If that counts as a new look, everyone on the tube is getting one these days. We expected better things from you, Miss Kapoor!

'Kahani...' takes a generation leap!

Ektaa Kapoor sure knows the tricks of the trade. When one thought that the six year old show 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki'(Star Plus) was losing its lustre, producer Ektaa has gone ahead and added an interesting twist to it. The show will now see a generation leap of 18 years and a fresh lot of young actors. In addition to this, lead actor Sakshi Talwar (Parvati) gets a chic new look by Bollywood's favourite designer Manish Malhotra.

At the function held to introduce the six new talents and Sakshi's new look, Ektaa was present with her parents, Jeetendra and Shobhaa Kapoor, designer Manish Malhotra and senior creative director of Star, Shailja Kejriwal.

Speaking at the occasion, Manish said "I am doing it only because it is Ektaa's show and she is a dear friend. When I was briefed about the new look, I wanted to give Sakshi a modern look. But Ektaa and Shobha aunty were clear that they wanted Sakshi in a sari. So, I have given Sakshi beautiful sarees which will complement her modern look."

Looking radiant in a yellow 'n' orange creation with a new hair-style, Sakshi exuded sheer excitement as she quipped, "the idea of this new look is to create a beautiful look keeping the older age-factor in mind".

Ektaa cited Parvati as her favourite character in comparison to Tulsi of 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' (Star Plus). "Parvati has this vulnerable quality about her which is alluring," she says.

Speaking about the makeover, she said "In the West, weekly shows get seasonal breaks. But the commercial aspect here does not allow us to do so. So, in order to keep a long drawn show interesting, we have to refurbish it from time to time. Thus, we cover the entire cycle of the protoganist's life—youth, middle age and old age by adding newer dimensions to it. Also, the younger generation bring their own added freshness and spice to the show."

The other attraction of the 'refurbished' show will be the inclusion of Aroona Irani who plays a pivotal role in the serial. "I simply had to get her in this role. So I called her up and requested her to come on board. Since she is dad's friend too, she sweetly complied" says Ekta.

E t tu, Parvati Agrawal? Sakshi Tanwar, who plays one of television's favourite prime time bahus in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, has also undergone a makeover. The bahu, whose cup of woes have been overflowing for the past six years, will now be seen in Manish Malhotra's de- signer saris, courtesy Ekta Kapoor. The K-soap producer has not only made the long running Star Plus serial take a generation jump yet again, but has also giv- en its protagonist a much-needed, glam- orous change. It was high time Parvati got out of her drab gharelu look even if she "found it very comfortable" and the new avatar will might well prove to be an in- centive for the ac- tor to carry on with her rona- dhona. Tanwar laughs aloud: "That's not true. The look won't be just one incentive. For the past six years there have been enough things in the char- acter that have proved to be incen- tives for me." Expectedly, Tan- war gives all credit to Kapoor for thinking about the makeover. "It's all Ekta's handiwork. She decided on everything with Manish and I'm just doing what they want me to". So will she be now seen in sexy and sheer saris? "Yes and even my hair will have highlights to complete the glamorous look," she says a trifle amused. The actor says that while she has never really owned a Manisha Malhotra creation, "I did wear a sari by him for an episode of Koffee With Karan." A generation jump obviously means adding more years to her character and of course being generously addressed as dadi and nani by same-age 'screen' grand- children. Why do it again? "Any change unsettles you. One is al- ways wary of new things but then I also realise it is essential for the story." With her colleague and anoth- er prime time bahu, Smriti Iraani (Tulsi Viraani) having broken her Tulsi image with a younger char- acter in Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasmaan, doesn't she too sometimes feel the need to expand her horizons? "I have done different serials in the past, but Kahani offers me everything an actor possibly wants to do. I have enacted every possible emotion and the fact that Parvati Agrawal has a connection with all the different characters offers me a chance to do so many different things in one serial. I have never felt the need to do something else because my family and friends tell me: 'Sakshi, re- member there are a whole lot of people out there who want to be in your shoes'. And that's so true. I couldn't have asked for a bigger and better platform than this". So, in the new scheme of things, what will Parvati's agenda be? "She'll be on a mission to bring to book her husband Om and Krishna, her nephew's killers and also take re- venge on all those who wronged her and her family." And so the kahani of Parvati Agarwal's life will hopefully get more interesting just like her colourful wardrobe. Enter the mentor Shruti (Parvati's daughter), Gun (Parvati's daughter in law) and Sonu (Gaurav's bahu) are preg- nant. Krishna (Parvati's nephew) is killed in the same way as her husband Om. Parvati is framed for murdering them and jailed. The entire family, especially Shruti, is now against her. Parvati's mentor and god- mother Narayani Devi (Aroona Irani) enters her life and guides her. The generation jump likely to occur this week will have the younger generation of four characters entering the Agrawal household — Maithili, Pragati, Sanskar and Adi.

Kamal to play jailor

Ali Asgar will play Asrani's role in the Bhojpuri remake of Sholay

Ranjib Mazumder

Ali Asgar aka Kamal is all ready to play the jailor (the character made popular by Asrani in Ramesh Sippy's Sholay) in Ekta Kapoor's Bhojpuri Sholay. When contacted, Ali confirmed the news. He said, "I have just signed the film. We are yet to look into the finer details of the film and my character. I do not know about my scenes in the film."

The actor is intent to give his best to the film. "Sholay has been one of the popular movies ever made. I am fortunate to be a part of this project, even if it is in Bhojpuri." But will Asrani's character be an inspiration for his role? "I have seen the original movie several times. So, obviously there will be some traits of his character, but as an actor, I would like to add my inputs within the limits of my role," he said.

Ali is not happy with the responses other remakes have generated so far. "I don't know why people look down upon remakes. I think the best way to judge a remake is to see it from the director's point of view and never compare it with the original. We should try to respect an individual's endeavours," he added.

Meanwhile, the actor, besides doing one popular Ekta daily and a comic serial, has no time for leisure. "I am extremely busy with these two serials. I have got several offers, but am unable to sign any new show," he said.

'I will never let anyone walk all over me'

She may be the epitome of sacrifice on TV, but in reality, Saakshi Tanwar is not as vulnerable

DHAVAL ROY

She is one of the two pillars of the TV industry. Apart from Tulsi, the only name that comes to mind for making TV what it is today, it is Parvati. But in spite of all the worship, she really is like some Goddess, someone everyone knows the existence of but hasn't quite seen! Tell Saakshi Tanwar this and she flashes a bright smile and says, "That's because I really have nothing to talk about. Whatever there is, one sees of me in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. And, I myself get bored of reading about the same people everyday, I don't want the audiences to feel the same about me. I do my work and go straight back home, take ten days off every month and go to meet my parents in New Delhi. This is how boring my life is," she giggles. Ask her if she keeps safe distance from the media because of the reports a few years ago that she has a mental problem and she says warily, 'I don't want to talk about it."
But what she is willing to talk about right now is her makeover in the show. After sporting a bhabhi kind of look with heavy saris, hair tied up in a bun and big bindi on the forehead, Parvati will be seen in pastel colours, dainty jewellery… basically a chic look. So how is it to change after all these years? "It's always good to change. It means growth of the character and also the person. Now Parvati has a mission, which I cannot talk about much right now, for which we needed the change. We have taken a chance by changing Parvati after all these years but we are sure about it working, the rest depends upon the audiences."

Ankola bye, party ho jaaye!
By: Upala KBR
November 14, 2006

Ekta Kapoor
Salil Ankola
According to a source close to the Balaji camp, Ekta Kapoor had a get-together at her Juhu home last Thursday, to celebrate the ouster of Salil Ankola from Bigg Boss.

Apparently, the queen of soaps was extremely happy with the fact that she had managed to get an injunction restraining Salil Ankola from appearing on Sony's Bigg Boss.

Our source adds, "People in Ekta's office were very excited about the court order. It was a victory for Ekta and Balaji to have Salil out the show." Some of the guests at Ekta's party included her best friend, Anupam Kapadia, Suvarna Jha (Trupti in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Thi), Ekta's close friend, Preeti Gupta and Prachi Desai (Bani in Kasamh Se).

Unimportant issues

When asked about the party Ekta Kapoor laughs and says, "No! Why would I throw a party to celebrate Salil Ankola being thrown out of Bigg Boss? I did have some close friends over for dinner at my Juhu residence but there was nothing to celebrate. I would have reason to celebrate if I got bigger TRPs for my shows or if I started new shows. I am starting two new shows in January but when I'm not throwing a party to celebrate that, why would I throw a party for Salil Ankola? I would never celebrate such small things."

She scoffed at the idea that it was a big victory for her to have Salil evicted from Bigg Boss's house. "These are small things. I don't host parties for unimportant issues!"

Nevertheless, a guest at the party says on condition of anonymity, "Ekta had a good reason to celebrate. We're happy that the court has promptly acted on the breach of contract petition that Balaji had filed against."

However, Salil Ankola is in no mood to confront. On hearing about the get-together, he says, "Oh really! I didn't know about this. But I can't say anything. The matter is pending in the courts, so I can't make any statements. Let's talk after four days."

Kahaani TRPs kii

Sakshi Tanwar in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii
When asked about being worried about the TRPs of Bigg Boss overtaking that of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Ekta smiles and says, "I would be worried about something consequential, like if the TRPs of the shows of Zee overtook my shows. For me, the bigger competition is Zee's Dulhann, Betiyann and Saat Phere."

Adds a source in Balaji, "The TRP of Bigg Boss came in last week only. On Friday, they were 2.8 and on Saturday they were 2.4 while Kahaani's was 9.5. The TRP of Kahaani had slightly fallen during the cricket matches but that was before Bigg Boss started and had nothing to do with it."

Jayaa quits Kahaani...!

One more generation leap in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and many actors have started shying away from ageing. One of them is Shilpa bhabhi i.e actor Jayaa Mathhur who has refused to add grey streaks and play a granny!

Jaya Mathur: Play my age!

Post her exit from Kahaani the actor has already been signed for Aroona Irani's rechristened show Dolee Saja Ke for Sahara One. Here she plays Anuj Saxena's second wife and has a negative character to portray.

"After a long time I'm essaying a negative character called Maya and am very excited about it. And it's a good production house and a fabulous role so I couldn't say no to the role," points out Jayaa who starts shooting soon for the show.

So we ask the actor what made her say no to Kahaani... after being a part of the show for one and a half years. " I don't see myself playing a grandmother in the show so I nicely bid adieu. Now in my free time I hitthe gym, "states Jayaa.

And the logic behind her name change? "I read a book on numerology and decided to change my name accordingly. I have also taken a second opinion from Sunita Menon. And needless to say it helped and has got me positive response. " smiles the actor who is yet to find her prince charming.

Jayaa started her career with films like Raat, Baazi and Anmol and later switched to a career in television with shows like Kaun Apna Kaun Paraya,Jaagir, Bandhan, Kasamh Se and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. The actor is a homebody when not shooting and prefers to be with family and friends besides watching television and being a music freak.

Sakshi is the biggest manipulator I know...
By: Upala KBR
November 15, 2006

Sandiip Sikcand
Sandiip Sikcand stepped in as creative director at Sony 10 weeks ago and he's already being touted as the channel's 'lucky mascot'. With three big shows (Kaajjal, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Bigg Boss) already on air, the channel's in the midst of launching two new serials and two more reality shows in the coming months.

So the battle lines are drawn. Parvati bhabhi has gone in for an image make-over, while Salil Ankola's replacement will step into Bigg Boss's home. The Ekta Kapoor-Sandiip Sikcand war is just hotting up. So who will garner the maximum eyeballs is now the BIG question.

As ex- creative head of Kahani, do you think Sakshi's makeover will help viewership?
I am sure it will. That is why it's being done. Anything new in a fiction show gets attention, but it also depends on the track and way the story is played out.

Did you quit Balaji because of Sakshi?
No comment. Sakshi Tanwar doesn't exist for me, so why are we talking about her?

When Ekta asked you to choose between Kahaani and your play Black, fed up of Sakshi's manipulations, you chose the play?
My reasons for quitting Balaji are very personal and it still hurts to talk about it. In the four years I was with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, I never spoke to Sakshi. She has her own take and would like to direct and produce the show on her own. Sakshi is one of the biggest manipulators I know, and I don't want to give any importance to her. I have fabulous memories of Kahaani, Balaji, Ekta, Shobha aunty and my colleagues there. I will always be fond of them. But there will also be certain negative elements like Sakshi and other people I wouldn't like to be associated with.

Is there an outright war between Ekta and you?
There is no war or Balaji bashing, neither am I proving a point. I'm just doing my job. I am proud to have been a part of Balaji and I hope it was proud to have me. Today, I want Sony to be proud of me as their creative director, so what's wrong with that? Big Boss is a good show. It's sheer coincidence that Kahaani is in the same time slot. It's a good product and Sony is going all out to milk it. I don't think that's a bad idea.

It's being said that everything on BB is staged.
That's a complete lie! We have based it on an international format and can't mess or tamper with that. If I had my own script I would use background music and jhatkas too. It's totally real.

Bigg Boss is a three-month show. how will you keep the interest up?
The interest will be in the kind of activities or tasks the celebrities are made to do. In the future, we will have some amazing games in keeping with each character's features. We will spice it up more and add masala, masti and fun. There will be times when the celebs will be frustrated and will not give enough fodder, but this is about watching celebs in their true form – from cooking to brushing their teeth.

Was Salil Ankola's departure a big blow?
We were neither shattered nor demoralised. If Salil was in an agreement with another production house, he shouldn't have joined Bigg Boss. Also, if we had been told about it, we wouldn't have taken him in the first place. But these things happen and life goes on.

You are being called Sony's lucky mascot…
I don't know whether I am lucky or not, but all these shows have great potential and it's been great working on them. Bigg Boss is my first experience with reality TV. The hype it has created is tremendous. Besides there are also two more exciting reality shows.

Are you poaching Balaji's actors?
Sony's doors are open and if the role and character suits an actor, why not? I have heard of copyrights on stories and songs, but not on actors! I am here to do my job, and it doesn't include poaching. Smriti is a producer and she came to me with a concept. There is nothing wrong with that. Aamna (Shariff) was to host Bigg Boss or join as a participant. She came to meet me, I asked her what plans were and narrated the concepts.

Has Gurpreet from KTH also approached you?
All I will say is that a male lead from a current Balaji show came to meet me with his wife saying they wanted to create problems for Balaji. I asked them to get out. I'm not here for someone else's vendetta.

If Balaji came to you with a serial…
If any producer comes with a good show and concept, we will hear it out.

Has Iqbal Khan approached you?
No. I've heard he doesn't like me (laughs).
