Ekta Kapoor: Parvati Bhabi is my favourite bahu

Srabanti Chakrabarti

November 15, 2006 13:30 IST

Whenever a television serial is not doing well, Ekta Kapoor uses one of her trump cards -- the generation leap.
It has been done many times before in soaps like Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai, Kesar and of course, Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.
The latest addition to the list is Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. The serial, which has been under threat from Sony's reality show Big Boss aired in the same time slot, has resorted to another generation leap.
To enhance the show further, Balaji Telefilms has also resorted to a complete makeover of one of India's most popular bahus, Parvati Bhabi, played by Sakshi Tanwar.
Actress-turned-producer Aroona Irani has also joined the cast of Kahaani...
Ekta Kapoor explains, "I feel a leap is required in any long-running serial. When we show the entire life of a person, it becomes monotonous beyond a point. That is when a leap is required. And this is the right time for Kahaani to take a leap."
The 18-year-old leap will take place in tonight's show, and Parvati will turn 60 with an all-new glamorous look.
Ekta continues, "Undoubtedly, Parvati Bhabi is my favourite bahu among my serials. Please don't construe this as a competition between Smriti Irani (who plays Tulsi in Kyun Ki...) and Sakshi Tanwar -- I am referring to the characters only. I can relate much more to Parvati. This is a much-needed leap and makeover. But we, of course, will retain the old flavour of the serial and its characters."
Ekta then warns us, "Everyone in the audience who is a Parvati fan will be in for a shock!"
Parvati bhabi's makeover will be done by Manish Malhotra, who also worked in Balaji's Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai.
"They are the best production house in the Indian television industry. So when Ekta called me, I couldn't say no for a makeover for Parvati," Malhotra says.
Ekta and Shobha Kapoor briefed Malhotra on Parvati's makeover. "I wanted to give her a western look," he adds. "But they wanted an Indian look. So we designed the perfect combination between Western and Indian. Let me clarify that the new look will not make Parvati sexy, but it will suit the new role."
Malhotra first worked on Parvati's hair and opted for straight hair. "For the saris, I thought of soft, pastel shades which would suit Sakshi. And despite the fact that Parvati will look very different from the way she has been shown in the last six years, the audience will love it," he says.
Meanwhile, Sakshi is very excited and nervous about the makeover. "Earlier, it would take 45 minutes for my makeup. Now, it's double the time!" Sakshi exclaims. "I am as excited and nervous as I was on the first day of shooting for Kahaani' It is a big risk too, as Parvati has become iconic. The badi bahu of the Agarwal family can never do wrong. I hope she is proved right this time as well!"
Kahaani Ghar Ghai Kii is aired at 10 pm from Monday to Thursday on Star Plus.

Ali Asgar aka Kamal is all ready to play the jailor (the character made popular by Asrani in Ramesh Sippy's Sholay) in Ekta Kapoor's Bhojpuri Sholay. When contacted, Ali confirmed the news. He said, "I have just signed the film. We are yet to look into the finer details of the film and my character. I do not know about my scenes in the film."

The actor is intent to give his best to the film. "Sholay has been one of the popular movies ever made. I am fortunate to be a part of this project, even if it is in Bhojpuri." But will Asrani's character be an inspiration for his role? "I have seen the original movie several times. So, obviously there will be some traits of his character, but as an actor, I would like to add my inputs within the limits of my role," he said.

Ali is not happy with the responses other remakes have generated so far. "I don't know why people look down upon remakes. I think the best way to judge a remake is to see it from the director's point of view and never compare it with the original. We should try to respect an individual's endeavours," he added.

Meanwhile, the actor, besides doing one popular Ekta daily and a comic serial, has no time for leisure. "I am extremely busy with these two serials. I have got several offers, but am unable to sign any new show," he said.

heres a good news for all of us.kamal has got a new born baby daughter whose name is ada.n tht is y he is away frm work.

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Daddy cool: Ali Asgar with wife Siddiqueh, son Akbar and newborn daughter Ada

Actor Ali Asgar (Kamal Agarwal in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) has worked without a break for six years. However, recently Ali was forced to take a month-long break. Reason? The actor's wife Siddiqueh delivered their second child, a baby girl. Says Ali, "I'm a workaholic and don't like sitting at home. It makes me feel sick and edgy."

But this time it was a paternal leave of sorts for Ali. "After the birth of our daughter Ada, our three-year-old son Akbar began to feel neglected. He thought that it was unfair on our part to shower so much love and affection on his sister," says Ali. Understandably, his wife was busy with the newborn baby. "I too was shooting round the clock. After a few days, I realised that my son had become quiet and withdrawn, and was not behaving like his normal self. The fact that he felt left out was evident from his behaviour, so much so that it started bothering us," he adds.

Ali then decided to take over and help his son get over his insecurity. "I requested the production house to grant me leave. Since my wife was busy with Ada, I had to take charge of my son. At this age, sibling rivalry is a common phenomenon. Every parent must have dealt with the problem at some point of time. So, I wanted to be there for my son and help him overcome his fears. Our life is incomplete without him and I tried to explain that to him. This kept me away from my work for almost a month. But I don't regret it," he says

Saakshi would never quit Kahaani...

Saakshi Tanwar has been playing Parvati on Star Plus' Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki for more than four years now and it's only now, that her character is undergoing a makeover. So how is it living in the shadow of a character? Doesn't Parvati's identity overshadow Saakshi's? "It would be wrong to say that. Really how many people knew Saakshi Tanwar before Kahaani… ? Yes, I did become famous as Parvati first but I also became famous as Saakshi because of Parvati," she says. Saakshi adds that this is the one serial that has always been there for her. "So I will always be there for the show when it needs me, which is to say I will do the show till its last episode." Must say, Saakshi's one loyal lady!

After ruling the TV screen with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii for six years looking almost the same, Sakshi Tawar finally gets to don a glamorous garb as Parvati bhabi's image undergoes a makeover. She speaks about her new look as well as what's new on Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

How do you feel about looking more glamorous than ever?
This is like a new chapter in my life. It's a big challenge for me. People have watched me as an icon for six years. I thank Ekta for this. There is a child in every actor who gets excited with every new thing that comes up. I hope I do justice to my new challenge. I don't think anyone else would have given me this kind of a role. But Ekta took that risk. One thing has surely changed. Before it used to take around 45 minutes for me to complete my make-up and be present at the shoot. But now it takes one and a half hours for me to do my make up. I was very tense about this whole look thing. Thank god, the promos have got a positive response.

So, will this new look get you more glamorous roles?
To tell you very honestly, glamour is not what I search for in a character. For me the story should be strong. There should be something about the character, which contributes to the larger picture, even if it is a one-scene role. It doesn't really matter if it's completely deglamourised.

It has been six long years. Aren't you bored of playing the same Parvati day in and day out?
On the contrary, it has become an essential part of my life. On a day off I suddenly feel at a loss. It's like any other nine to five job. The retirement age is 60 and an average individual starts working at the age of 20. And most people spend their entire life in the same area of work so it's no big deal.

Tell us something about your character. Will there be a change or will we see the same old Parvati?
I personally feel what you wear doesn't necessarily reflect what you think. I can wear a mangalsutra, sindoor, bindi and than also believe in modernism and forward thinking. I can wear jeans and a kurta and still feel that it's essential to have a son in the family. Values will always be the same under any circumstances. It's an integral part of Parvati's character. Only the situations will change.

Your interaction with Manish Malhotra?
Manish is a very sweet guy. He is very professional. He discussed my new look with me. He knows what he is doing. He has really worked hard to design my look.

Would there be a romantic interest in Parvati's life?
Not at the moment. Right now she has only one mission in life that is revenge. I can't say anything more, as I don't know how the story is going to move ahead. Right now I can just say that she is completely focused.

Veteran actress and producer Aroona Irani has joined the Balaji camp. Irani, who has her own production house and has her serial Vaidehi on air, said that she was very happy to work with Balaji Telefilms in their show Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Irani, who began her career as a child actor, was one of the undisputed queens of the item dance along with Helen and Bindu. "Ekta called up and asked whether I would be interested in working with them. I am an actress first, and then a producer. As I liked the role, I accepted the offer,'' says the senior actress.

Elaborating on her role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, she said, "Narayani Devi, the character which I play, is very interesting. She is highly influential and a strong person. She guides Parvati while in trouble. She is Parvati's mentor. The role resembles the character of Krishna in the Mahabharata.'' Narayani supports Parvati when she left helpless without any support from family. Parvati then regains confidence and fights back to get her rights with the help of Narayani.

This actress has also made a mark as a comedian in films. She says, "The role is certainly exciting, and I share a cordial relation with Jeetuji and Shobhaji, so I feel at home while working with Balaji." Irani has acted in films like Bombay to Goa, Dil to Pagal Hai, Garam Masala and Beta and feels that if given a good offer, she would like to continue acting in films as well. Meanwhile, the new serial by her production house, whose name she did not disclose, will be telecast in December.

Before: Tina Parekh as Mukti
Tina Parekh is having an identity crisis, thanks to her make-up in Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Tina, who played Mukti in the show, is now back in the new avatar of Devaki, a village girl who now plays an active role in helping Prem (Manoj Bohra) get back his lost memory. Tina has been given a new look, wherein she is dressed like a village girl with a scar on her face. And, incidentally, people have stopped recognising her after that.

Tina says, "After I put that make up on my face, people found it very hard to recognise me. Since Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki set is just adjacent to Kasautii…'s, I went there to chat with friends during the break. But, to my amazement, no one recognised me. Then, I spotted Ketan, GM of Balaji, on the sets and waved at him. But, he too didn't recognise me and walked away. I was really confused. Then, I caught hold of him and asked him what happened. He pointed to the scar on my face and it was all clear to me."

After: As Devaki
This is not the end. The actress was also denied entry in her building. Tina recalls, "On the third day, we finished shooting at around 10.30 pm and I was too tired to remove my make-up on the sets. So, I decided to go home directly. But, the security guard did not let me in and created a hullabaloo. I kept my cool and explained to him about my make-up. But, even then, he made me sign the register and only then he let me go inside," she adds.

As Tina will have to play Devaki for some more time, is she feeling embarrassed? "It isn't a hassle for me. But, I do feel awkward when people do not recognise me," she says.
