It's raining TV stars at premiers!

Of late we have noticed that our TV fraternity has been thronging film premiers, especially angrezi movies. Here they get the dual advantage of getting a free invitation of catching up on the film as well an opportunity to grab a place on page 3.

Similar was the case at the recent special screening of the Leonardo De Caprio film, Departed at a suburban multiplex. Marked present were tellydom's Rucha Gujrati, Chetan Hansraj with wife Lavinia, Kushal Punjabi, VJ Maria Goretti, Mini Mathur with hubby Kabir, Shreeyas Talpade (now a film star), Samir Soni and many more recognizable faces from the small screen.

So here's a short cut to fame for the wannabes on TV. Try grabbing an invite for such premiers. You have a chance to get noticed!

An actress for over 40 years, acting is her first love. Most of her experience comes from acting and producing Hindi and Gujarati films for the last six years. Starting with Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, the TRP topper one-hour weekly that enjoyed unrelenting success for over two years, the veteran actress-cum-producer followed it up with two more moderately successful shows, Menhdi Rang Layegi and Rabba Ishq Na Hove.

Currently busy producing and acting in her own weekly show Vaidehi which has been revamped into a daily from November 6, Aruna Irani is all set to work outside her own production banner. The veteran actress will be seen in Ekta Kapoor's Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki.
Obviously the call came from Ekta.

"She called up to see if I was interested in doing a role in Kahani. I asked for a couple of days to think but before I could say yes another call came from Balaji. I thought I must do it because I am an actress first and I want to do good roles," she says adding "Ekta's success story is amazing. I don't think it's possible for anybody to emulate her success."

It's not just the role that made Irani say yes to Ekta's offer. "Most of the time we live and work in our own world as if nothing exists outside. A closed mind is a sign of creative death. But I have an open mind and want to see how others work. I am really excited about getting into the Balaji camp," says Irani who plays Nayan Tara in Kahani.

"Nayan Tara is like Krishna of Mahabharat who will guide Parvati fight against people who have done injustice to her. It's not a very long role but a cameo that will last for about two months. I could not have done a long character because I am busy with Vaidehi which is becoming a daily.""

Given her age Irani was never comfortable producing and working in a daily. "But circumstances have forced me to get into the grind of making a daily. It's the need of the time. Nobody watches a weekly, no matter how gripping the story is simply because the waiting period is too long for viewer who is used to watching television drama on a daily basis," she reasons.

Irani really seems to be opening up to the opportunities that television is offering. For, she is making another daily show Doli Saja Ke, a story of father-daughter relationship staring Barkha Bisht and Anuj Saxena that will premiere on Sahara One soon.

When you think Babul, images of the yet to be released movie starring Rani Mukherjee, John Abraham, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Hema Malini might come to your mind. But for people at Sahara, Barkha Bisht, Amit Sareen, Monish Behl and his real life wife Arti come to mind. Confused? Don't be. Sahara is all set to launch a new TV serial called Babul.

The soap is a family drama that revolves around Barkha Bisht. She plays the daughter of the house who isn't treated well as she is considered to be unlucky for the family. Arzoo Gowitrikar plays her horrible sister-in-law who makes life miserable for her. Amit Sareen plays Barkha's knight in shining armour. Aroona Irani too will be seen in this serial. More on Aroona, she will also be seen soon in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. She will be a close pal of Parvati on the show.

Parvati to shed 'bhabhi' image
By: Vickey Lalwani
November 7, 2006

Bye bye bhabhi! Sakshi Tanwar
While Smriti Z Iraani (aka Tulsi) had to go the gray way post the second-generation leap in Kyunki, her counterpart Sakshi Tanwar (aka Parvati) is going the reverse way. Tanwar will sport a very hip look from November 15, when Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii takes a leap of 14 years.

Glamour beckons
The makeover got underway at Balaji's Sankraman Studio, yesterday afternoon. Ojas Rajani will give her the new look while Manish Malhotra will take care of her costumes.

According to a source, "Kahaani mein bahut bada twist aanewala hai. Sakshi will adopt a western look and she will be called Paro. Sakshi has no problem wearing western outfits because she wears them in daily life."
Tanwar says that she won't comment until Balaji makes an official announcement in this regard. A close friend of Sakshi offers, "Sakshi has been strictly told by Balaji not to talk anything about this. They all are keeping it under wraps."

Main bhi modern: Sakshi in western attire
Meetu, creative head of Kahaani, too, confirms Tanwar's makeover, but refuses to divulge any details. "A press conference is slated on November 9. We will speak only then."

However, Ojas spills the beans, "We are giving Sakshi a very glamorous look. Her hair will be coloured in brown and gold and she will sport a layered hairdo. The tone will be very warm, which will bring out her features very well."

He adds, "Sakshi has lost quite a bit of weight and her face and cheekbones are now more pronounced. This will accentuate her look. Add to this, Manish's outfits which are going to be very hot. This is definitely going to be a challenge for Sakshi."

Who's that girl?
Ojas shares a comfortable equation with Tanwar also. "I have worked on Sakshi's look when she appeared in Kandy Floss and Koffee with Karan. She received a lot of compliments and some people did not recognise her at first glance," he says.

Regarding Sakshi's outfits, Manish Malhotra maintains he would be sticking to saris, "That's Ekta's call. But the hair, saris and make-up will be so stylish that it will completely metamorphose Sakshi. Will the saris be sexily draped along with blouses having sexy cuts? Pat comes the reply, "Wait and watch."

Kahaani Achint ki.........

She may be the most villainous vamp on the tube courtesy her roles in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahanii Ghar Ghar Kay. The negative portrayals by Achit Kaur have provided the much needed succor to the narrative and it would be impossible to get the drama sans her character.

Now after scorching the small screen with the heat of her roles, the actor will soon be seen in a film by Anant Mahadevan (of Dil Maange More, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar and Aksar fame). Titled Kahani (once again…but only the initial word!), Achint plays Dino Morea's (the main protagonist) sister.

Admits Achint, "Oscillating between vampish and positive roles has been happening for a long time now. I am on a lookout for different roles; I always try to get into a new character. It would be great to leave a trail of memorable portrayals behind when I call it quits!"

So how easy is it to impersonate different shades of a character? "Well, not very difficult for me. I may not completely relate to the idiosyncrasies of a character per se. But once you try to understand the nuances of the role, the getting-in becomes like a cake walk."

And it's not just acting that keeps Achint on her toes. The actor is also a core entrepreneur; she runs a successful chain of salons by the name 'Beyond the Fringe'. How does she manage all this? "See my only job is to handle the monetary aspect of this enterprise. I have devoted friends who take all other decisions related to the business and it simplifies my life."

Great Achint! Hope your small screen vibes are generated on the big screen too!

"I am very scared of the Bigg Boss.."

The wait for the baap of all reality shows The Bigg Boss is soon to end with the show going on air today. Though it's speculated that many big names were approached to participate in this show, only a select few braved to give up their cozy lifestyle to be trapped in a mansion with strangers! Imagine being constantly spied by cameras, being starved of all sorts of entertainment and eventually throwing your life open in front of the telly audience.

One such sporting contestant of this hungama packed reality show is Rupali Ganguly aka Monisha of Sarabhai VS Sarabhai fame. This vivacious and loquacious actor took up this show as a challenge, as she puts it in her own words, "The concept sounded very strange initially, so I refused it point black. But later I thought of not missing out on such an opportunity!"

Here's a candid and exclusive chat with a rather scared and apprehensive Rupali who is busy packing her bags ready to head off to Karjat, where the contestants will be secluded and cloistered for three whole months!

"My first reaction was: are you crazy"

The buzz is that only losers have taken on Bigg Boss….What's your take?

I am very hurt by some news reports which have called me a loser. I have not taken up the show because I have nothing else to do, but because I want to do something different. In fact, not many know but I was also offered Zee's Sindoor Tere Naam Ka. The role was on the lines of Tabu in Viraasat. I am not sure if it was the lead role, but it was definitely a very promising character.

So you chose Bigg Boss over Sindoor?
Ya. I have these weird mood swings in life, you know. And there's nothing really exciting happening. Something which makes me get up in the morning, put on my makeup and make me commit myself for a 12 hour shift. So, one fine day I just decided that I wanted do this, so I can tell my grandchildren that I did something like this.

Ok, let's be honest. You must have been apprehensive initially?
Yes, of course. I got a call from the channel about three months ago. My first reaction was… are you crazy. Because the concept of being cut off from the world, with no communication whatsoever sounded a rather eerie. So, initially I said no to them.

Then what made you change your mind?
I don't have a boyfriend, so obviously its not that I would be pining to speak to someone throughout the day. But I am a totally family person and my dad doesn't keep too well. So, I need to speak to him everyday, my mother and my dogs. I have seven of them. I had requested the channel if I could make at least one call to my dad, they said no. It seems they will pass on all the messages to us.

"I don't have a boyfriend; I won't be pining to talk to someone throughout the day"

Why did you finally say yes?
I called up J D Majethia who means a lot to me and asked him for advice. To tell you frankly, I was a bit scared of revealing my true self to viewers. And what if it backfires on me in the future. But somehow, JD has assured me that he will give me work, no matter what.

Even now you sound very scared and hesitant. Why so? Aren't you still convinced about the show?
You're right. I am still scared because we have been told nothing at all about the show. I just know that I am going to be with a few other participants in a room. Our reactions will be monitored, but then we don't get to know the audiences' reactions. No hairdresser, no make up. I am really sacred of being watched by the entire nation sans makeup. I think I'll look very bad.

Which thought scares you the most right now?
I've never ever lived away from my family, or lived on my own, not even in a hostel. I am going to miss my own room, my parents, my pillows and my dogs..

So how much money are you being paid for the show?
I cannot reveal the exact amount, but it's definitely something that I earn over a period of twelve months.

Will you evolve as a person because of Bigg Boss?
My mother feels I need to be disciplined as a person. I don't get up early in the morning, don't exercise and just keep throwing things around in the house. My three month long stay in Karjat will hopefully help me evolve as a person.

"I was a bit scared of revealing my true self to viewers"

You mean to say, you don't know much about what's going to be happening there. But you are just going off to Karjat?
I have no clue who the other contestants are. I just know that we're going to be put up at Karjat, there's a gym and a swimming pool. But, of course, you will never see me in a swimsuit. The only saving grace is that cameras will not follow us in the bathroom.

So what happens to your role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar ki.. for three months?
In any case, I don't get too much footage on the show. There are 37 actors and at the end of it its Sakshi's story, with her family and husband. Also, there are a number of established actors and characters on the show. Though, I would say Balaji is one of the best production houses that one can work with. And, of course, JD and Aatish' production house Hats Off is family for me.

So, why don't you ask Ekta for a role?
I have never ever been a PR person, so I have never really gone around asking for roles from producers. And in any case, Ekta is too intelligent a person who can spot talent and characters. So, if she has a role, she will definitely offer me one.

Aroona Irani discovers the actor in producer Ekta Kapoor

DEEPALI DHINGRA Times News Network

Aroona Irani will soon be seen in Ekta Kapoor's soap Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki on Star Plus, which is a little surprising since Aroona has a production house of her own. Mention this to her and Aroona says, "That way, every other production house is my rival. But the fact remains that I'm an actor. If Ekta was an actor, I would have loved to cast her in my serial. Just like how she said 'Aroona aunty, will you work in my serial?' I would have asked her 'Beta will you work in my serial?'" she says with a smile.
According to Aroona, she took up the opportunity to play the character of Narayani Devi in the serial as she believes that Ekta's company is the best place to work in, if she wants to work outside. "I'm very excited about this role. I have known Jeetendra and Shobha even before Ekta was born. So for me, working with her company is like moving from one room of my house to another," she adds. But isn't she afraid of any ego hassles, considering she's senior to Ekta? "Of course not," says Aroona, "After all, an actor is supposed to follow the ideas conceived by the director."
Aroona who had packed in so much of punch as a scheming mother-in-law in Beta, is now hardly seen in films. "I got busy with my serials," explains Aroona, who also laments the fact that good roles are hardly written for female actors of her age, but if she's offered a good role in a film, then she will definitely take it up.
So who's the one actor she wouldn't mind working with year after year? "That has to be Sangeeta Ghosh. I haven't seen a more professional actor than her and I'm sure I won't for the next 40 years," she smiles.

Ekta steals the show!

After having strategised the makeover of Parvati bhabhi in the upcoming tracks of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Ekta Kapoor seems to have got into the same mode personally!

The queen of soaps was spotted recently at an event, looking refreshing - in a slimmer, svelte avatar with her red tikka and rings-n-beads intact. We can't help but imagine - what if this Balaji matriarch sets her foot in front of the camera! With a dynamic combination of beauty and oodles of attitude, Ekta can definitely give the current crop of talent some sleepless nights!

Is Ekta hearing?

Ekta prefers Parvati to Tulsi!

Ekta Kapoor isn't known as the soap queen just for anything. When she walked into the venue for a TV do on Friday evening, the young lads who're part of her show literally stopped talking as she strolled past them. Now if that isn't worthy of a queen, what is? Sakshi Tanwar, looking pretty in a canary yellow sari, sat by her side all through the do, but hardly spoke much.

WHAT IS MOBILE NUMBER? Manish Malhotra was seen juggling calls between two mobile phones. Now whether they were personal or work related, we're not so sure!

BLACK OR WHITE: Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor made their proud presence felt here, with the former preferring to wear black shoes for the evening. White's too filmi, right Jeetu?

PLAYING FAVOURITES: Ekta can be diplomatic too when she wants. Sample this. When she was asked who she likes more, Parvati or Tulsi, she said that she likes Parvati more than Tulsi but not Sakshi more than Smriti. Art of diplomacy?
