Saakshi ko gussa kyun aata hai?

Saakshi Tanwar, who plays the self-sacrificing Parvati on Star Plus' Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, is very angry these days. The actor has never been media-friendly and after posing for the cameras post her make-over in the serial, she has gone back to being her ownself. Saakshi is apparently unhappy with the way she has been portrayed in the media and hence, is refusing interviews. Of course, when it come to publicising her new look the actor doesn't mind stepping in front of the camera. Looks like Saakshi doesn't like it if things don't turn out the way she wants them to.

It was reported recently that Abhay Vakil is making a comeback with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. But the actor quashes all those stories as rumours and clears the air. "It's a rumour that I am re-entering Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Actually I decided to take a break and go for a vacation to the US. It was really hectic shooting two dailies at a time," he says revealing the real reason.

He is however willing to talk about his second passion, that of being a writer. "I have always been a writer. The point is that I didn't have time to pen down my ideas. I started as an assistant director to Priyadarshan. I was also in touch with renowned writers like Neeraj Vohra. In fact there are no acting plans at the moment. It has taken a backseat. I am also into choreography," he informs.

But then where does his future lie – will it be more of acting, choreography or writing? "Writing and direction probably would always remain in the forefront. But I don't plan for the future. No one can predict what turn your life or career is going to take in the future," he says candidly.

He also reveals another talent of his, which few are aware of. Since the age of eight I have been doing magic tricks. I started with doing magic shows at kids' birthday parties. Soon after that I started getting a chance to perform on stage. Then my magic tricks helped me entertain my fellow co-actors on the sets," he says with pride.

Also it's a new revelation that Abhay suffers from back pain as well and does all the work in spite of the condition. "It has been there for 12 years now and has become a part and parcel of my life. It started while I was performing an intricate dance step," he explains. Since he is into doing so many things, if given a chance what is the single change that he would like to bring about the television industry? "I would definitely like to make the industry more organised so that life would get easier for the unit members. They should all get one holiday every week," he says.

Generation leap takes 'Kahaani...' atop ratings heap

Indiantelevision.com Team

(25 November 2006 7:20 pm)

MUMBAI: The leap theory has delivered yet again for India's lead Hindi entertainment channel Star Plus. The channel's second biggest show Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's generation leap episode (Week 46 of 2006) has garnered a whopping 15.3 TVRs to top the ratings charts.

The Wednesday episode reached out to more than 12 Million viewers (Source: TAM, Base: C&S 4+, Hindi Speaking Markets). This is a record-breaking ratings of sorts because no other show this year has delivered such phenomenal ratings, a statement issued by the channel claims.

Star Plus overall week-day as well as weekend prime-time has simultaneously improved – with a total recorded growth of 14 per cent over the previous week.

Additionally, the channel's recent launch - Karam Apnaa Apnaa - has also performed well by touching its highest average rating of 6.93. Out of the weekend programming pool of Star Plus - Sai Baba has recorded the highest ratings of the year with 7.22 and Prithviraj Chauhan also has touched the highest ever rating of 8.55 TVR, the channel asserts.

'A grey-haired Parvati bhabi wouldn't work'

Tell us
Are you an expert?
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
Have you seen them in Pune?
Sakshi Tanwar is not your regular television bahu. For starters, she is Ekta Kapoor's favourite bahu. Secondly, the actress has had a stunning makeover by Manish Malhotra when her serial, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, went through a generation leap.
So instead of an older, greyer woman, Sakshi's Parvati bhabi looks more glamorous now.
Srabanti Chakrabarti spoke to Sakshi about herself, her initial years in showbiz, and playing a gorgeous 60-year-old woman.
You have become an established actress now. Looking back, do you feel you have achieved what you wanted?
Frankly, I never thought I would become such a busy actress. I always wanted to do something creative and had an interest in acting. But I never thought it would become my career.
I took studies very seriously and wanted to become an IAS officer. I was also very active in extra-curricular activities especially acting, dancing and elocution. But I did not do it with the intention of becoming an actress.
From an aspiring IAS officer to a TV actress, how did the transition happen?
When I was in Delhi, I would do small roles in Doordarshan programmes. Since I had a passion for acting, I did some roles for Sony and Star Plus too. I came to Mumbai for one of those serials, and stayed with a friend.
As luck turned out, she had some work at a Balaji studio and took me along. Ekta's aunt noticed me and asked me to leave my portfolio. Unfortunately, I didn't have a portfolio then. In fact, I still don't have one. So I left a few working stills with them.
So that's how Sakshi became Parvati?
Yes. Ekta saw my photographs and within a month, when I was visiting the Balaji studio again for some work, she spotted me.
'You are my Parvati,' she said.
I thought she was talking to someone else. Only after she said, 'Excuse me, I am talking to you,' did I realise that I had bagged the role!
But I was not sure whether I wanted to take it up because I was just starting my career and was being offered the role of a bari bahu (eldest daughter-in-law). When I expressed my concern to Ekta, she narrated my role in detail and told me that within a week of the serial being launched, people will call me Parvati. And that actually happened.
Tell us something about the initial days of getting into Parvati's skin.
Don't ask me. When we started shooting for Kahani, we would work for 15-16 hours every day. It was like getting into a new life altogether. I hardly had time to think of anything else.
At times I would feel so low that I would call my mother and start cribbing about the work schedules. It was only after she scolded me and said that I need to stick my decision, did I realise that there is no shortcut to success.
After playing Parvati for so many years, has Sakshi Tanwar changed as a person?

Sakshi has remained the same person. I have become more confident and responsible after playing the role for such a long time. Today, I live alone in Mumbai; something I never dreamt would happen.
Being the youngest in my family, I have always been pampered. So, this is something that Parvati has taught me.
Parvati and Sakshi are different in many ways. While she is the decision maker in the family, I prefer if my decisions are taken by others.
What is Sakshi's weakness?
Sleeping! I am extremely fond of sleeping. Whenever I get some time off, I catch up on sleep. On my day-offs, all I do is sleep.
You have not been seen in other serials for a long time...
That's not entirely true. When Kahani started, there was hardly any time for me to do anything else. When I did get the time, I started working in serials like Devi, Gurukul and Sansar. But I realised I was working 24/7. I didn't want that.
Now, I am happy and content with just one serial. Besides, most of the offers I was getting were similar to Parvati.
Are you happy with your new look -- that of a 60-year-old woman without any signs of greying?
As an actor, I am never really concerned about my getup. The modern look that you see Parvati in now is a decision taken by Ekta. I have immense faith in her. Plus, I believe that you cannot judge a person by her dress.
In the last six years that Parvati has been seen on screen, she has got her share of success and failure. She was vulnerable, she made mistakes and learned from them. Now, she makes a comeback with a motto of revenge and a grey-haired Parvati wouldn't have conveyed the message properly. Thus, the modern look.

'Kahaani...' delivers and how!
Usha Thomas
Tuesday, November 28, 2006 23:50 IST

Refreshing and believable content, new cast and Aroona Irani's debut have all gone in to get the show a record 15.3 TVRs
Nobody expected that the makeover of the lead protagonist and a generation leap storyline in the six year old show 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii' (Star Plus) would bring in more viewers, but the ratings have proved otherwise.
The generation leap episode (Week 46 of 2006; Source: TAM, Base: C&S 4+, Hindi Speaking Markets) has garnered 15.3 TVRs to top the ratings charts. The November 15 episode reached out to more than 1.2 crore viewers.
'L'iL Champs' (Zee) had recorded a high of 11.1 TVR in October and 'Kahaani…'s ratings breaks records as no other show this year has delivered such excellent ratings. The channel's overall week-day and weekend primetime has also improved – with a total recorded growth of 14 per cent over the previous week.
On receiving these phenomenal ratings, senior Creative Director of Star, Shailja Kejriwal says, "We worked on the content, apart from introducing new characters and that has paid off. Also, the marketing hype created around it came together and people were curious to see Parvati's new avatar where she was no longer the crying, sacrificial person but a front footed person who faced her problems rather then weep over it."
"Parvati represents the social change that we, as a nation, are going through. From an accepting and complacent nation we are moving to being here and now. We are no longer waiting for karma to sort out our problems and this transition in society today is reflected in 'Kahaani..'. Truly, Parvati epitomises the new woman," adds Shailja.
On Aroona Irani's role, Shailja says, "The introduction of Aroonaji's character is another crucial element. Being a powerful actor, she has brought in her own set of fans and goodwill to the show. And in a subliminal way, with Aroonaji coming across as a 'mother' figure to Parvati, the latter seems younger and vulnerable, which is a refreshing to see."

Countdown for Tina, Manoj
By: Tushar Joshi
November 29, 2006
After having worked as co-stars in Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Tina Parakh and Manoj Bohra will now be seen anchoring a musical countdown on Star One.
Confirming the news, Tina says, "I am very excited about this new project.

I have never anchored a show before, so this will be my first time. It is a countdown show with many interesting elements. We will begin shooting soon."
When asked why she took up the project in spite of doing two dailies (Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii), Tina says, "I have done my fair share of acting.

Hosting this show is an opportunity to explore something new."
Tina adds that working with Manoj is was added incentive to take on the project. She says, "The fact that we share a good rapport and are comfortable with each other will work in our favour."

Spiritual sojourn

Even though she won the Best Supporting Actor award at the Indian Telly Awards for her role as Mukti in Kasautii, Tina wasn't present at the ceremony.

"My guruji Sri Sri Ravi Shanker was in town so I had a tough choice between going for the awards show and spending time with him. I chose the latter and visited him along with Manoj."

When asked about her association with the spiritual leader, she says, "I have always been a God-fearing person. I am very religious and always pray for blessings in personal and professional life. For me, Guruji is a medium to get in touch with higher powers."

Currently working out to be in the best of her form, she says, "I am happy to be back in both Kasautii and Kahaani. These days, my focus is on working out and getting back into good shape," signs off the actress.

Not just parvati: Sakshi Tanwar
Sakshi's crime thriller

Though viewers only know Sakshi Tanwar as Parvati bhabhi in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, not many know that the actress is also an anchor. For the past few months, she has been hosting a crime series for Doordarshan called Kab Kyon Kaise, based on real stories of crimes against women.

The show is produced by Rajat Sengupta of Gayatri Tellesoft Ltd.
Seems like the low-profile Sakshi prefers to only let her work to do the
talking.

Star One readies Idea Ek Se Badkhar Ek

With just a month away from celebrating a new year, Star One already has plans to add a new show to it's programming strategy. Premiering on 23 December is Idea Ek Se Badhkar Ek - a one-of-its-kind countdown show to be hosted by the dashing Manoj Bohra & the chirpy Tina Parakh.

The show is interspersed extensively with celebrity interviews, graphics, special effects, compelling AV montages and more. Adding to the fun element, in an all-new look, Manoj and Tina share an interesting chemistry but are usually at loggerheads, trying to out do one another with witty and snide remarks and fun repartee but an entertaining combination in all! The countdown show includes exciting categories ranging from 'Top 10 Action Heroes', 'Top 10 Love Triangles' to 'Top 10 Sizzling Singles', amongst many others.

Announcing Idea Ek Se Badhkar Ek, Mr. Paritosh Joshi, Advertising, Sales and Distribution, Star India, said, "Idea Ek Se Badhkar Ek is a unique Advertising Funded Programme and is all set to add excitement to Saturday night viewing on Star One. With young hosts, Tina and Manoj, there will be a great amount of interactivity in every episode and viewers will get to win prizes as well. We are thrilled to be associated with a young brand like Idea and hope to reach out to our audiences like we have done in the past with shows like The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Nach Baliye and Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai amongst others"

Let's see if Tina-Manoj can re-create the same chemistry that they are portraying in Star Plus' Kasauti Zindagi Kay.

Post the Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii leap, the limelight might have shifted to Sakshi Tanwar a k a Parvati and the new generation but Shruti i.e Tina Parekh is unfazed. She promises to hold her own in the high profile show.

Q: Are you enjoying your role in Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii after it has taken a generation leap?
It's too soon to decide whether I am enjoying my role or not. It can only be answered after a while.

Q: Will you be seen in a grey character now?
Ekta (Kapoor) has appointed a creative team to decide on my character's growth. It would be better if you address this question to one of the creative guys.

Q: After the comeback of Parvati, the serial seems to be concentrating on her and the new generation. Where would your character fit in now?
Parvati and I were present in the serial before also. Both have their own individual significance and story tracks. Everyone stands out differently.

Q: Your new look is being talked about. What is the significance of that scar?
You are asking me to disclose the story again. There's some significance attached to that scar which would be revealed in time.

Q: Have your costumes also been designed by Manish Malhotra too?
No, Manish (Malhotra) hasnothing to do with it. Ekta (Kapoor) and the creative team worked on it. Ekta (Kapoor) wanted a particular image for me. She even made me try a lot of hairdos.

Q: It's been a long association with Balaji Telefilms. How has been your experience been?
The experience has certainly been good; otherwise I wouldn't have been here. I started here as nobody and people recognise me now. What more can I ask from Balaji? I owe a lot to them.

Q: Tell us something about your journey in the television industry. How did you bag your first role?
Nimbus Television gave me my first break in their serial, Shakti after which I did a serial for Sahara. Then Khichdi happened. But seriously speaking, I don't believe in looking at the past.

Q: Given a chance what would be the one factor you would like to change in this television industry?
I would be happy to have more weekly shows so that the unit members can have more time for themselves. It's very necessary to have proper rest to deliver good work.

Q: Are you working on any other projects other then Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii?
How can one person even think of more work when one is already doing two dailies?

Q: You have already acted in a film called Satya Bol. Do we see you doing more films?
Given a chance I would love to do an art film.

Tina Parakh's secret sagaai
By: Upala KBR
December 5, 2006

Tina Parakh
Tina Parakh (Mukti of Kasauti Zindagii Kay and Shruti of Kahaanii Ghar Ghar Kii) got secretly engaged on November 22 to Vikram Hazra, with the blessings of her guru Shri Shri Ravi Shankar.

Tina met her fianc five months ago. Hazra is the programming head of the International Art of Living. She tells us all about her secret engagement and her impending marriage in February next year.

How and where did you meet Vikram?
I have been associated with the Art of Living for the last couple of years, and Vikram is the programming head of the International Art of Living. We met at a satsang function where Vikram was the speaker five months ago. The event was held at Shanmukhananda Hall in Dadar. I was asked to introduce Vikram to the audience by one of the teachers. We met then and it's been wonderful, but I wanted to keep our relationship out of the media.

Vikram Hazra
When did you fall in love?
Vikram travels all over the world because of his Art of Living commitments and every time he returned to Mumbai, he would message me. Over a period of time we realised that we had fallen in love with each other and so we decided to get married.

Apart from his job, Vikram is a fantastic singer and sings only devotional songs. He also plays the electric guitar extremely well. He's appeared on MTV and Sansara TV for satsangs many times and is very close to Shri Shri Raviji. I have a collection of his CDs.

What attracted you to Vikram?
He's very intelligent, well read and widely travelled. He speaks six languages, knows people from all walks of life, is very proud of what I do and accepts me for what I am, with my limited knowledge. When we met, neither of us knew the magnitude of each other's popularity, so you could says that we fell in love with each other rather than our images.

Why did you keep your engagement under wraps?
It was the most beautiful moment of my life. Guruji was in Mumbai to conduct the Shibir in Bandra between November 19 to 24.

On November 22, when Vikram and I met him, he gave us garlands and asked us to present it to each other. He also produced rings and made us exchange them. It was the biggest gift that Guruji could have given me.

Everything was so simply yet so beautifully done. I can never forget that moment. I kept it under wraps as I am very superstitious and believe in good and bad vibrations. I didn't want people to talk about it till the time was right.

When is the wedding?
It will be in the first week of February. We are still working out the date. We will have the wedding at the Art of Living ashram in Bangalore, after which there will be a reception in Mumbai. I have taken a month's leave from Balaji from the last week of January to plan out all the details.

What else are you doing besides Kahaani and Kasauti?
I'm hosting a Bollywood countdown show, Idea Ek Se Badkar Ek, produced by Contiloe Films. It will go on air very soon on Star One, and very I'm very excited about it!
