CHAPTER-14.

Sudha Singh was just in time,to overhear Prithvi giving his identity to her husband,and she had also seen her husband's reaction to it.

This is not good.I need to stop Ram before he does or says something damaging.She thought to herself,as she hurried over to control the tense situation.

The atmosphere in the veranda was so tense,that you could actually cut through it with a knife.Sudha quickly placed a hand on her husband's shoulder,and gave him a warning squeeze to keep calm,as she smiled at Prithvi,and tried to lighten the atmosphere.

"So you are Prithvi Khanna?!Brother Rajeev's son?!!"Sudha exclaimed out with a fake forced laugh,her laughter sounding stressed even to her own ears,so she was sure it had not gone unnoticed by the two men sitting now in a dangerously quiet state.

"Yes."Prithvi replied finally,looking up at her with an understanding smile,as if he sympathized with her and understood the dilemma she just had been forced into.

"We heard of his sad demise..."Sudha left the sentence hanging in an uncertain voice,as she looked down at Ramdhari,who was now staring somewhere past Prithvi's shoulder,and seemed lost in painful thoughts.

"Yes..Yes..He died 7 years ago..."Prithvi managed to reply in an unusually tight voice..Even after so many years of his father's death,Prithvi still felt the excruciating pain of his father's loss,everytime he was reminded of it.

"Oh..So..."Sudha was again searching for a new topic to lighten the atmosphere,when Prithvi suddenly stood up.

"I should get going."Said Prithvi."And thank you Mrs. Sudha for such a wonderful lunch and hospitality."Prithvi said to Sudha with a polite smile.Then he turned to face Ramdhari.

"Mr. Ramdhari?"

Ramdhari turned to stare at Prithvi,but his mind seemed to be faraway..And that moment Prithvi was not really interested to know about Ramdhari's troubled thoughts.

"Thank you for your hospitality,Mr. Ramdhari.And now I'll take your leave."Prithvi said to the unmindful Ramdhari,offering his hand to shake.But Ramdhari who it seemed had not heard a single word of Prithvi's,just stared on blankly.

So Prithvi just lowered his hand,and turned to leave,while Sudha Singh politely walked him to the door.

"Please don't take Ram's behavior to your heart."She explained in an apologetic voice."He has become nostalgic on learning you are a Khanna and hence was unmindful.He has so many memories with your family..."she said in way of explanation.

"I am sure he does..."Prithvi replied in a thoughtful voice.

"You should call me Kaki,you know?"Sudha suddenly said to Prithvi in a soft voice,as he turned to bid her farewell,again at the front door."That was what you used to call me,when you were a kid,and you used to come to me everyday for stories and treats.At that time,I had just come to this house as a new bride."She finished,surprising Prithvi,with a tearful smile,and gentle caress of his cheek.

Prithvi was not immune to such tender,motherly affection,especially when he had missed his mother's love all his life.

"Thank you."Prithvi replied in a choked voice,and with a joyful smile at her while gently squeezing her soft hands,he quickly turned to leave.

Prithvi walked away,as fast as he could.His eyes were getting misty and he needed to get his emotions under control,as fast as he could.Prithvi Khanna,the renowned industrialist,always stayed calm,and kept his emotions under check.So it was mandatory for Prithvi,as he walked back towards Khanna Haweli,that he calmed the storm brewing inside him,atleast for some time longer...

Meera looked down fom her upstairs window,at the departing tall,well built physique of Her Stranger.No..Not Her Stranger..Her Prithvi.She quickly corrected herself,remembering their conversation earlier.

Her Prithvi!Did she just think HER PRITHVI?!She realized with a shock,her cheeks already heating up in embarrassment,as she blushed red.

Prithvi.Just Prithvi!Why should this tall and handsome guy be hers?!!She scolded herself,unaware once again that she was now thinking of Prithvi as tall and handsome too.

But who is he really?I need to find out more about him.Meera thought to herself,and chewed on her bottom lip,as she watched Prithvi's departing figure fade from her view...

Back at the Khanna Haweli,Prithvi stared at the hallroom furnitures still covered with white clothes,to prevent dust from accumulating on them,as the Haweli was closed and unused for years,since his grandfather's death.

"Ramu Kaka!"Prithvi called out.

As if he was standing outside,just waiting for his call,the old man instantly ran into the hallroom.

"Please get the house cleaned,into its old habitable conditions?Hire helps from the village or from the town,fix the electricity,get the kitchen working,and fix whatever else needs to be fixed,please?I want this house in tip top condition and fully functioning in its old splendor within a week."Finished Prithvi in a determined voice.

"Fix this house...Beta..?Are you going to stay here?"Asked a baffled and confused Ramu Kaka.

Slowly Prithvi turned towards Ramu Kaka,and gave him a dazzling smile.

"I am here to stay Ramu Kaka.Whatever it takes,I am staying right here."Prithvi finished in a calm and determined voice.The same tone of voice,that scared his business opponents to death,when they were sure ruthless industrialist Prithvi Khanna was after them,and will not spare any of their mistakes...
