Chapter 6 Why do you care?

“Aap ko kaise pata chala.”Jalal asked looking directly at her. “ woh avashyak magi hai. Humein kahi se bhi pata chala ho par avashyak yeh hai ki aap ke pran khatre mein hai.” Jalal stood up.and turned away from her “ Humein pata hai, air waise bhi ismain koi nahi baat nahi hai, ek Shahenshah ki zindegi mein humesha khatre hota hai.” He said “ Nahi Sahenshah aap eishe mat kahiye aap is baat ko itne halke me kaise le sakte hai ,unhone Aagra mein kisi bheja hai aap ko maarne ke liye.”She said Jalal could hear the pain and worry in her voice, he turned arround and approached her, as he came close to her she took a step back “ Aap ko kya, Aap ne to hum ko dhakka maar ke hata diya apne aap se.” I kept going closer to her and she kept backing away until her back was to the wall. She looked at me with fear in her eyes. I trapped her between the wall and me “ toh fir yeh fikr kiyun, Benazir ko humare pass are dekh jalan kiyun.” I went even closer to her she was breathing fast, she had also closed her eyes. “ kahiye na" Jalal was almost touching her cheeks with his lips. Suddenly she pushed him with her hand then got out of his grip and stood apart “humein aapki chinta hai kiyun ki aap humare pati hai. Isse jyada kuch nahi” She said without looking at me. Then she left.

“Jhoot, Jhoot bol rahi hai aap Jodha begum aap jalti hai, air yeh baat hum aapse mama ke rahenge.”

Jodha ran to her hozra, and did not stop before she reached there she sat down in front of her kanha. “ Hey Kanha yeh kaisa ehssas hai , humara hriday itni tivrata se kiyun dhadak rahi hai. Yeh ho kya gaya hai humein. Sahanshah ko Benazir ke Karin dekhke humein itni jalan kiyun. Mano jai humar tan mein aag lag jaanti hai.Aur yeh achanak Sahenshah ko khone ka dar kiyun. Humein rasta dikhaiye kanha.” Moti came in “ Jodha bahut raat hogayi hai aap so jaiye.”she said. Jodha sees a letter lying in front of her from her brother Sujamal she picked it up and read it again. “Priya Jodha, hum Jaante hai ke tym humes krodhit ho. Par humein yeh patra Tumhe likhna pada, Jab hum near ke raste se Amer ke jangal se ja rahe the humne do logon ko baat karte suna un mein se ek Abul Maali tha dusra tumhare mehel ka koi wyakti, jo Shahenshah ko maarne ka shadyantra rach rage the. Unhone kaha ke unhone mehel mein Sahanshah ko maarne ke liye koi hatyar bheja hai.

Tumhare bhaisa Sujamal.”

Jodha was lying down on her bed but sleep seemed to be escaping her.she twisted and turned in her bed how would she save her husband. She couldn’t loose him. She got up from her bed and went out stood near the balcony near her hozra.and looked arround she saw Benazir leave her room wrapped in a shawl. At first Jodha thought that she was going to meet Sahenshah but then she saw her go down stairs Jodha went back to her room took her dagger wrapped swal around her self and went back to the balcony saw that Benazir har reached the angoori bag and was going towards the gate she followed. Benazir left the palace premises Jodha followed her not far away. She saw her enter the forest. Jodha followed her. She saw Benazir come to an opening, then bend down and put her hand into a hole then pull out a snake. Now Jodha’s heart was racing what was she doing Hey kanha. Benazir looked at the snake lovingly and the took out her tounge and the snake bit her on her tounge and Benazir closed her eyes with ecstasy. Jodha let out a squeak and covered her mouth. “ Jalal aab Tumhe hum se koi nahi bacha sakta. Koi bhi nahi.” Benazir said. “ Hey kanha yeh ...to yeh...to ek vishkanya hai.” She ran back to the palace. She ran directly to Sahanshah’s hozra. But came to know he was not their she waited. It was bitter cold but she didn’t move whole night she kept on calling kanha’s name. “ Hey Kanha rakhna karo.” She kept on repeating it.

Jalal’s Pov.

Jalal opened his eyes and found Rukaiya wrapped around him like a second skin. He moved her hand and got up. Went out of her hozra and then started approaching his hozra. There she was sitting on the seat in front of his hozra, with her hand on backrest and head on her hand she had dozed off. Jalal asked the gaurds “ yeh yehan kab aayi” “ Kal raat se baithe hai huzur.” The gaurd answerd. He looked at Jodha in shock her shwal had dropped from her shoulders and she was shivering. He went near her , she was murmuring something “ vi...vi...vishkanya,” She sobbed in her sleep “ Raksha karna kanha Shahenshah ki rakhna karna.” She sobbed again.... Jalal shook her “ Jodha Jodha utho." He said she woke up with a start. “ Sahanshah....” she looked at him. She stood up and “ Shahenshah woh ek vishkanya hai. B...Benazir. woh aap ko maarne aai hai .”Jodha said.” “Kya....Kya bakwas hai. Zeherili doshiza. Aap apne jalan mein andhi ho gaye ho." He said “ Nahi Sahenshah humne aapne ankho se dekha.” She pleaded “ Ek baar bas ek baar janch karwaiye.”.

“Thik hai. Sipaahi, Benazir ko kaho aaj Deewan e khaas mein hazir rahen.” Saying Jalal left.

Jalal sat in his hozra fuming. He couldn’t belive that Jodha had stooped so low. How could she blame an innocent person like this. In jealousy she had done something that jalal was finding very hard to belive. Was power and position so important to all these women. Be it Rukaiya be it his badi Ammi now even Jodha. He thought back to how after drinking the same milk benazir had drunk zakira was fine and how Benazir had gone crying from the court even after that Jodha kept on pleading with him. “Shahenshah mera visvas kijiye mein ne apni ankho se dekha hai, maar dalengi yeh aapko.” She pleaded “ Chup ho jaiye Jodha begum. Hum kabhi soch bhi nahi sakte the ki aap jhoot bolengi ek Masoom par illzam lagayengi. Chi.” Jalal said walking away. “ Nahi Sahenshah rukiye. Suniye.” She shouted. Jalal poured himself a drink and tried to relax.

Jodha’s POv

On the other while leaving from Deewan e khaas he did not see Jodha fall on her knees and break down, he did not see that moti had to force her to go from there. In her hozra she had still not stopped crying. “ Yeh kya hai Jodha. Jab Sahenshah tumhari baat nahi maan rahe tum kiyun roye has rahi ho. Chodo na . Woh swayam apne aap ko samhal sakte hai.” Moti said. “ Nahi Chod sakte moti. Hum unhe musibat mein nahi dekh sakte.unhe kho ne ke kheyal se dar lagta hai .unhe kuch hojaye to hum bhi.....” Jodha kept on crying “ to kya tumhe Sahanshah se ....” Moti asked “ Nahi pata par eyesa lagta hai kaise agar unhe kuch ho jayegi to humari sanse bhi band hojayegi. Hey kanha yeh kya hai.” Jodha answered. Moti smiled.

Jalal’s POV

In the morning Mahamanga had arrived at Jalal’s hozra and told him that the people of Agra had attacked Benazir after yesterday’s court hearing. He had also said that it was the emperor’s duty to protect her.

This time Jalal wanted to make an announcement. He wanted to see her face.

Jalal entered the Deewan e khaas and went to his throne and sat down. He looked arround to where she was sitting, he was shocked to see her eyes. It looked as if she had cried the whole night. But Why? His ego again came in between he looked away. “ Aaj Benazir par baazar mein Aagra ke logon ne hamla kiya. Par ab yeh nahi hoga. Hum ne faisal kiya hai ke hum Benazir se nikkah karein ge.” He said. Everyone seemed please. He looked at Jodha , tears were flowing down her cheeks but she didn’t speak or create a scene. She looked up at him, he saw that her eyes were swollen and red,As if she had spent hours crying it looked like she was still pleading to him through her eyes. He felt like someone was tearing his heart apart but still he forced himself to smile.

Chapter 7 Sleepless nights.

Jodha’s POV

Tears seemed to have become a permanent fixture in her eyes. She sat near her kanha crying. “ Hey Kanha yeh kya hogaya aab hum kaise rokeng us Benazir ko. Agar unhe kuch ho gaya to hum.... Hey Kanha sahayata karo koi rasta dekhao.” She put her head on kanhas feet. “ Jodha tumne kaal se kuch nahi khaya hai, soi bhi nahi ho kuch to kha lo.” Moti requested. “ Apne aap ko eyshe dando dene ka kya Arth hai.” She continued. “ Nahi humein Nahi Khana... Moti tum Jao aur Benazir par nazar rakho. Sahanshah ko bilkul akela uske sath mat chodna, par Shahenshah ko pata na chale.” Jodha commanded. Moti left. “ Sahayata karo kanha.” Jodha murmured.

Jalal’s POV

It was the middle of the night, the palace of Agra was in pin drop silence. All was dark everywhere. Only two rooms had their lights on one was the queen’s room and other the emperor’s room. Both were in the same state of mind. Jalal came out on his balcony and looked towards Jodha’s room the lights were still on. Why was she awake. Jalal walked slowly to her chambers and stopped at her door he saw she was sitting in front of her kanha’s temple with her head on his feet. Her duptta was off her head, Jalal walked in slowly and leaned down beside her ,she was murmuring something “ Raksha karo Kanha mere suhag ki Raksha karo.” She murmured Jalal smiled. He picked her up in his arms and took her to the bed and laid her down. Then covered her with a quilt. As he was going out of her chamber his eyes fell on the plate covered on the table. He went to it and picked up the cover. The food was untouched. What was she trying to prove? Why was she doing all this? He couldn’t understand.

The next morning Jalal met his mother and told her what he had seen he wanted her to go and talk to Jodha.It had been 3 days since the announcement of the Jalal’s wedding. The preparation were in full swing.

Jodha’s POV

Jodha could see that time was slipping out of her hand everyday. She felt helpless. Moti could see that she that Jodha seemed to be loosing her liveliness day after day. She tried her best to cheer her up but no use. Three nights she had spent without closing her eyes in front of kanha. Most of the days she dozed of at his feet. She just wouldn’t budge. Today was the day before the wedding, along with her morning flowers Jodha had received a message from Sujamal bhaisa, Since then she seemed more worried. “ Kya hua tum ayese vichalit kiyun ho.”Moti asked. “ Moti Bhaisa ne likha hai ke unhe apne sutro se pata chala hai ke Benazir Sahanshah ko vivah se pehle hi maar dalengi.” She said paceing up and down inher room. “To aab tum kya karogi.” Moti asked. “ Main raat bhar Sahanshah karmre ke bahar baithungi aur pehra dungi” she said.” Ayesa kaise ho sakta hai bahar ka maham dekha hai aapne. Aap bimar pard jayengi .” Moti said. “Mujhe yeh karna hoga.” She said.

She thought about the confrontation she had with Benazir on the night which the wedding was announced. Jodha had just left the Deewan e khaas. When she came and stood in front of her. “ Aadab begam sahiba. Karliya Joshua. Dekhliya aapne mujhe nahi harasakti aap. Main yeha jis maksad se ayi hun usse pura karke hi jaunngi.” She said. “ Kabhi nahi mere jeevit rahte to main yeh hone nahi dungi. Yeh mera times vada hai. Jab tak main jeevit hun tum Sahanshah ke pass bhi nahi bhataksakti.” Saying so Jodha had walked away.”

Jodha was lost in her thoughts. When a baandhi came in and Announced the arrival of Rukaiya begam. Rukaiya came in “ Jodha begum hum chahte hai ke aap yeh hozra khali kar dijiye.” “ Par kiyun.” Jodha asked shocked. “ Kiyun ki yeh karma Sahanshah ke sabse nasdiki hai aur yeh nahi Fulham ko diya jayega. Yani benazir ko.” She said giving an evil smirk.” She told moto and other bandhis to empty the room.

Jalal’s POV

Jalal was returning from a meeting with adgah sahab when he saw Jodha leaving her room with her kanha and all her stuff out of he room. His heart stopped beating for a second. “ was she leaving. No.she couldn’t” he went to her and said “ To aapki jalan itni badh gayi ke aapne amer jane ka man bana liya.” “ Nahi Sahenshah, hum apna sasural chod ke nahi jaa rahe, par kisi ne humein apna kamra chosen ko kaha to hum ja rakhein hain.” She said. Jalal was shocked “ kya kiyun humberto nahi kaha.” He said “ kiyun ki kamra Benazir ko dena hai.”she answered. Jalal held her hand and said “ chaliye humare saath.” He took her to her room and saw Rukaiya emptying the room. “ Rukaiya b kya kar rahi hai aap. Humne kab kaha yeh kamra khali karne ko kab kaha" he asked “ Nahi kaha par ....humne socha.” She answered “ Yeh kahi nahi jayegi.” He said then he turned to Jodha and said “ Aap yehi rahengi air ghabraiye mat hum is kamra mein kasam bhi nahi rakhenge. Hum ek galti dohrate nahi hai. Aur each kahe to aab aapko dekh ke Gila hota hai air agar aap ki ankhe band bhi hojaye tab bhi hum aapki taraf nahi dekenge.” He looked her . He saw her face fall . He turned and went but he knew he had gone to far.

Jalal stood at his window and thought about what he had said to Jodha he knew he had gone too far. He was just so angry. Now he was regretting it. He looked at the moon, his heart was not in the wedding he didn’t know why he was doing it.

Chapter 8 Sacrifice

Jodha’s POV

Jodha sat in front of Jalals room shivering in the cold winter air. Moti looked at her from her room. She felt helpless, Jodha didn’t even let her stay with her. “ Tumko kiyun samaj mein nahi aa raha hai ki tum Sahanshah se prem karne lage ho, nahi to yeh jalan yeh bechaini kiyun.” Moti thought to her self.

“ Nahi hum aap ko kuch nahi hone denge chahe is keliye humein apne pran hi kiyun na dena pare. Nahi. Kuch nahi hoga aapko.”She said to herself.

Early in the morning Moti came woke her up. “ Jodha uth jao, Dekho agar Sahanshah ne dekh liye to gussa karenge. Chaliye, aap ke kanha ke puja ka samaye ho jayega. Chaliye.” She said. Jodha woke up stood up and looked at Sahanshah’s hozra. Today was the wedding what would she do. She took her bath and then did her puja and took the aarti thal and went to Sahanshah’s room, he was getting ready for his wedding. Her eyes burned with hidden tears. “Aarti Shahenshah.” She said.

Jalal’s POV

He was getting ready for his wedding, when he heard the sound of her anklets. He looked up to see her standing with the aarti thal in her hand. “Aarti Shahenshah.” She said. He could see the hidden tears in her eyes but didn’t react. “Aap yeha, sayad humne aapko kaha tha ki hum AAP ka chehra nahi dekha chahte hai.” He said. A drop of tear escaped from her eyes “ bas aartike liye. Sahenshah” she said. He came forward and took the aarti. “ aapne humko Mubarakbad nahi diya.” He said with a smirk. “ Iswar Kare aap humesha surakshit rahe....aur aapki sari sankat humper ajaiye.” She said and turned away and went away. Jalal was shocked. His heart had started protested against his brain. What is happening?

Jodha’s POV

Jodha got ready to go to the wedding hall. “Hum wachan dete hai chahe humare pran hi kiyun na chali jaye, hum aapko kuch hone nahi denge.” She said “ Humein ab samajh mein aa gaya hai ke hum aap se Atyant prem karte hai , bina aap ke humara jeevan nirarthak hai.”

Before leaving she went to her kanha and said her last prayers. Then she left for the wedding hall.

As she entered she saw Ammi jaan and Salima begum come to her . Ammijaan said “ yeh kya hai Jodha humne suna ke tu pichle theen chara din din se soi nahi khanabhi nahi khaya thik se. Aur to Aur tum kaal puri raat Jalal ke hozra ke bahar baithe thi, Yeh kaisa pagalpan hai Jodha.” She said “ Akhir kis baat ki saza de rahe ho tum apne aapko. Dekho kaisi phiki pad gayi ho. Aur ankho ke niche kaalik bhi pad gayi hai.” She said “ Hum nahi Chahte ke Sahenshah ko kuch ho." She said “ Humein kya hua hai, hum to thik hai chodiye chaliye. Chalke baithe.” She said.

Jalal’s POV

Something inside his heart was hurting. His sixth sense kept telling something would go wrong. His heart felt heavy as if he was going to loose something very precious . Atgha Sahab came and said “ Chalein Shahenshah. Waqt ho gaya hai.” “ Haan chaliye.” He said. They proceeded to the wedding hall.

He enterd the hall which was decorated very tastefully. There was a large chalice in between with water in it. He sat opposite to it. His eyes went to Jodha. He was shocked to see her. He had not noticed her state before. What had she done to herself.? She looked pale there were dark circles under her eyes as if she hadn’t slept for days. Jalal couldn’t bare to look at her so he looked away. The rituals for wedding started. First everyone started giving him and benazir gifts. He accepted them by touching them.

Mahamanga on the other hand was very happy to see the state of Jodha. “ Aap ne Humare bete ko taklif di hai kaal se aapki ahmiyet bhi Jalal ke ankho mein khatam ho jayegi. Jalal sirf aur sirf humare bete he rahenge.” She thought.

Benazir looked at Jodha begum and “ Humne kaha tha na ke aap kuch nahi kar payengi, dekhiye aab kya Kaerngi aap.” “ Humare hote huye aap kuch nahi kar payengi Benazir.” Jodha said.

Jalal’s POV.

The maulvis announced that the groom and the bride should come for muh dikhaiye. Both Jalal and Benazir came to the chalice filled with water. Both look in the water. Benazir smiled at him. Jalal looked into the water but saw Jodhas face in it. He felt a pain in his heart. After muh dikhaiye the mmaulvis announced that the bride and the groom would feed each other sweet. The baandi brought in and Mahham tasted it first then it was handed over to Benazir, she sipped on it directly, then mixed it and gave it to Jalal. He was about to sip it when Jodha came out and said “ Nahi Sahenshah mat lijiye usse us mein vish hai. Is vishkanya ne usse apne mukh se lagaya hai. Aap.ko bhagwan ka wasta” she shouted. “ Bas kijiye Jodha begum, apni jalan mein aap itni girl gayi hai. Benazir ne apne aap ko be kasoor saabit kar diye hai. Phir bhi aap chi.” Jalal said. She gave him a teary smile.and took the bowl from his hand. “ Aap chinta mat kijiye Sahanshah hum aapko aur jyada der nahi satayenge. Aur waise bhi aapni ne kaha hai ki agar hum mar bhi jaye to bhi aap humare taraf nahi dekhenge. To phir humari jarurat kisi ko nahi. Humari khushi to aapki khushi mein hai. Hum aapko jeevit dekha chaahte hai. Aur is mein vish hai hum yeh saabit karungi" saying this she drinks the kheer. As she finishes the whole sees her sway and then to Jalals astonishment she falls but he holds her before she falls to the ground. He is shocked to see what just happened. Hamida begum orders Atgah sahab to arrest Benazir.

Jalal looks at Jodha who gives him a teary smile. “ Jodha yeh aapne kya kiya ...” before he can finish Jodha says with difficulty “ K..kuch mat k...kahiye S..Sahenshah. Humein A..ap k..ko. J..jee bhar k...ke dekh l..lene d...dijiye. K...kya p...pata p...hir n..na mile.” She says “ Nahi Jodha.”Jalal says with tears in his eyes. “ Humein m...Mauf k...kar d...dijiye hum aapko dhakka dena nahi chahte the humne aap ko koi g...galat patra n...nahi likha.” Jodha says than she picks her hand and touches Jalal’s cheeks with difficulty “ hum aapse Atyant p....p....prem .k....k....karte h....hai.” saying this she becomes unconscious. Tears were not stopping in Jalal’s eyes . He was shocked.” Hakim sahiba inhe le jaiye in ke badan mein zeher fail raha hai.”
