Soaps score over 'L'il Champs'?
After Hours Correspondent
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 18:50 IST

With Diwali round the corner, all channels are getting aggressive in getting new programmes in primetime slots. With 'Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann', Zee TV is attacking one of the two most crucial time slots of 10 pm, where the long running soap 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki' and 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' is playing on Star Plus.

And who becomes the fall guy? Their oldest (14 years) and most successful property, 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa', gets the shove, just a few weeks before it's finale. With this week's elimination, just four kids remain to fight the title of 'L'iL Champs'.

For years, viewers have been glued on to the various formats of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' on Thursdays and when it was made bi-weekly, it's been on air on Thursdays and Fridays. Starting this week, the current series 'L'iL Champs' will now be seen on Fridays and Saturdays.

Director of the show Gajendrra Siingh says he was surprised when he first saw the hoardings of 'Betiyaan..' stating that it will be aired Monday to Thursday, 10 pm time slot and adds, "I was not notified and only saw it across hoardings of 'Betiyaan..' last Sunday. The channel must have good reasons for the change in schedule. Only, my creative team has been working overnight at incorporating the change of day in our script and we are now ready for the change in schedule."

Tarun Mehra, marketing head Zee TV, refuted that the decision to move 'L'iL Champs' had anything to do with the new celebrity dance show 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' (Sony) which is aired at 10 pm on Wednesday and Thursday. "This has not been an ad hoc decision and is part of a long time strategy to introduce soaps on weekdays. Besides, 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' has always been on Fridays and Saturdays so we have gone back to our original schedule. 'Jhalak..' is no competition and the ratings prove it."

The show to be aired this Saturday has Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla as a special guest. "Her love for music is well known and being a regular viewer of our show, she knew all the participants by name and had many words of encouragement for each of them. She gave in to the participants request of singing a song at the end of the show," signs off Gajendrra.

Jhatkas no more!

Being the only participant who had no affiliation to Bollywood, there was a feeling that the judges on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' (Sony) should be less harsh on celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor being a non-dancer and his offbeat movements. Well, this week his journey on the show has come to an end.

"This was to be a show that judged celebrities from different walks of life. It takes guts to be part of this. I agreed thinking it would be ballroom dancing but it ended up being more Bollywood jhatkas that I was not comfortable doing. But having said yes, I gave it my best shot though it did not fit my image," says a relieved Sanjeev at being ousted out.

That the judges were very upset over Rati's (Agnihotri) elimination also made him more determined to make a graceful exit. "I did not treat it as a competition and unlike the other participants, I was not in it to compete, or for the money or fame. Mobilising viewer support was an easy task but to know that I would have gone ahead while the remaining pairs who are definitely better danc, ers, would suffer because of my popularity with viewers was not acceptable to me," says Sanjeev.

"Nicole too had her exams and 10 hours of rehearsals would end up with her missing a year. I spoke to Nicole and I made an effort to make sure that I was ousted. I had fun and have no regrets at all. I cherish the experience as my basic motive here was to learn new things," says a cheerful Sanjeev.

Sanjeev's 19 year old choreographer Nicole Alvares states that her biggest achievement on 'Jhalak..' was getting "Sanjeev out of the kitchen and on to the dance floor".
"I am so proud of how he accepted his weaknesses. I admire his grit and determination at learning waltz, rumba, salsa and even some cool Bollywood moves," says Nicole.

Overseeing the technical aspects of the choreography is Sandip Soparrkar. "I have yet to see a more dedicated person like Sanjeev. He worked hard at mastering various dance forms, concentrated on techniques and would not rest till he got all his movements right. Most of all, I am going to miss his chicken momos and sabudana vadas," laughs Sandip.

Jaddu's fixing fascination

Ajay Jadeja

A SMS doing its rounds these days is that former cricketer Ajay Jadeja is game for taking money to lose his 'dancing' match (read Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa) too.

Jadeja's promising cricket career came to an abrupt end after he was found guilty of match-fixing.

Dear AJ, your greed for moolah finished the sportsman in you. It seems you are all set to end your alternate career (that of an actor-entertainer) as well. Not your fault entirely. Old habits die hard!

Sushama's belt costs sau ki patti
By: Kanika Parab
September 28, 2006

Sushama Reddy, actor
Bargain buy: A metallic, woven gold belt.
From: Roadside shop opposite Elco Arcade, just outside a store called Choice Centre, Hill Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: "The multitude Bangkok maal stores in Bandra stock these metallic belts priced at Rs 1,000. I got it for just Rs 100!" says the model-turned-actor.
I love it because: "It allows me to mix and match my bargain buys with designer clothes. In the picture, my cream trousers are a gift from my sister, Sameera, and the pink top is from New York, again a gift from my other sister, Meghna. Although the belt costs just Rs 100, it adds zing to an otherwise plain outfit," she says.

Shruti Seth, television anchor /actor
Bargain buy:
See-through, black chiffon kurti with dull silver and bronze sequin work
From: A tiny hole-in-the-wall shop located at First Cross Lane, Lokhandwala Market, next to Lokhandwala Chemist, Lokhandwala
It's a steal because: When Shruti was shopping for a friend's sangeet party, she saw similar kurtis at all the big Indian stores. "And they costed nothing less than Rs 2,500," informs the Shararat actor. "This cost me just Rs 500," she says proudly.
I love it because: "When teemed with a pair of formal black pants, you've got yourself a smashing Indo-Western outfit."

Pia Trivedi
, model
Bargain buy:
Silver Kolhapuri slippers
From: Roadside shoe stall opposite Shoebiz, Linking Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: There was a time when Pia travelled abroad, and saw Kolhapuris being sold for an exorbitant sum. "Although they were fancier and mounted on platforms, the basic idea was the same," she points out. So, naturally, when she spotted a funky silver pair for just Rs 50, the model couldn't resist buying it. "They turned out to be quite sturdy too."
I love them because: "They are a chilled-out pair of chappals that don't look out of place on any occasion."
Shveta Salve
, Television actor
Bargain buy:
Beaded earrings with seaside charms (sea horses, crabs, fish and sequins)
From: A jewellery stall in the lane opposite Bandra Book Centre, Linking Road, Bandra
It's a steal because: "First of all, they cost just Rs 40," says the Left Right Left actor. "Secondly, they don't look tacky. In fact, people always ask which store I picked them up from," she says.
I love them because: "They've earned me loads of compliments," smiles Shveta. In fact, she is so fond of the pair that she even sported them on the second round of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa dance show. "I wore them during my Cha Cha dance."
Dolly Thakore
, Theatre personality
Bargain buy:
A pair of cotton shorts from Versace
From: Fashion Street, Dhobi Talao
It's a steal because: "I got a designer pair of shorts (they are usually original export quality) for just Rs 40. Besides, I wouldn't want to pay too much for something I wear around the house. So, these were perfect," says Dolly.
I love them because: Dolly insists that the label has nothing to do with why she loves the pair. "The cut and fabric make them super comfy to lounge around at home in," she says.
Sagarika Mukherjee
, singer
Bargain buy:
Beaded choker
From: A garage sale organised by Namrata Barua, at Bandra
It's a steal because: "I know my friend Suchitra (Pillai) paid a lot of money for it abroad, and was selling it at the jumble sale for fun. I paid just Rs 50!"
I love it because: "It can lift a plain dress or a regular top, and give it a formal look" says the singer.

Street shopping ka funda

When actor Tanushree Dutta needs an outfit, all she has to do is call her stylist and specify the occasion. "She comes over to my location, complete with an outfit, shoes and accessories," says the actor. But that doesn't stop her from doing the occasional round up of Colaba Causeway. "I believe that there are two sides to buying stuff off the street:
Upside:
It's a lot of fun to go street shopping with friends.
It can be extremely satisfying to bargain for something, and get it at a rock bottom price.
Downside:
Raste ka maal isn't too big on quality.
It is good for one-time wear. I bought cheap junk jewellery from Colaba Causeway's jewellery store outside Caf Leopold. It looked great when I wore them, but in a few days the beads started falling out.

'I didn't know Farah would be judging me'

Akashhdeep Saigal on whether former-girlfriend choreographer Farah Khan is a stern judge

ROSHNI OLIVERA

Akashhdeep Saigal's working hard on his dance moves for the show Jhalak Dikhla Ja to impress the audience and the judges. Incidentally, one of the judges on the show Farah Khan was seeing Akashhdeep a few years ago. So, what's it like to be judged by an ex-flame? BT quizzed the the light-eyed actor...
How does it feel to be judged by your former girlfriend Farah Khan?
On the first day it felt a little strange. But from the next round onwards it felt like... she is a judge, one of the judges.
Did you know she'd be judging?
No I didn't know that earlier. I got to know later.
Once you knew this, did you think twice about participating?
No, not at all. Why should that make a difference?
Do you find Farah rather strict in judging?
I think she is just doing her job.
Were you and Farah in touch after you split a few years ago?
Yes. But we lost touch after she got married.
Do you consider yourself a good dancer?
As of now I'm just learning. I can dance, but I may not be the best. But, yes, I will get there someday soon.
What's the response to your Eklavya character in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi?
Women are loving my new look! I think they are liking the positive character that I'm playing. I have been well-accepted.

Hat-trick for Longinus and Shveta

Usha Thomas
The stellar dance performances by choreographer Longinus and television actress Shveta Salve in 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' (Sony) week after week are one to watch out for. This week, for the third time in a row, they have received the highest marks and are known as the technically most perfect pair.
The credit for this goes entirely to 40 year old Longinus. Having choreographed over 200 music videos and advertisements each and numerous corporate shows, he has also worked on many Bollywood projects like 'Bombay Boys', 'Moksh', 'Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar', 'Khushi', 'Corporate' and 'Page 3', amongst many others. He has also choreographed many plays by Bharat Dhabolkar.
Enjoying his stint on the show, Longinus says, "It feels good to be appreciated by the judges for all the hard work we are putting in. We have just four days to prepare the new dance form for the next week and we rehearse endlessly, late through the nights, as Shveta gets free only after 10 30 pm. My aim is to maintain the maximum of Latin American dance and I am comfortable with the format veering towards Bollywood's style of dance."
Complimenting Shveta, he says, "She has a great flair for designing clothes and helps me wear colour co-ordinated clothes that make us look good on stage. I wear my own shoes and capes when required and that helps to enhance our overall performance. Shveta comes from an acting background so the zeal to do more Bollywood is there but she leaves it to me to take the final decision on our moves. She is a not a great dancer but is very hard working and trusts me completely."
On the shoot, this week, Longinus had a minor mishap with his dhoti for the dandiya round. Despite expressing reservations on wearing the outfit, he went ahead, only to get it under his foot while dancing to 'Dhole tara..'. "I lost balance as the edges of the dhoti came under my feet, but I regained my composure and finished the dance. Like they say, the show must go on."
'I have not taken part in a dance competition since 1991 and am enjoying the experience. My son is thrilled that I am a part of it, especially at my age. The concept is to make my partner shine and I am working hard to make Shveta the best dancer on the show," signs off Longinus.

Mona, Shveta in dance-off
By: Vickey Lalwani
September 29, 2006

Mona Singh
Competition and jealousy go hand in hand. And so it comes as no surprise that all's not well between Shveta Salve and Mona Singh in Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

We've heard that while the two girls haven't had an open fight yet, but there's a palpable cold vibe between them.

Says an insider, "Let alone talking, Shveta and Mona don't even sit with the same set of people. If Mona is sitting with a group, Shveta will not join them. Mona comes and greets everyone, except Shveta."

Separate directions

Shweta is very aloof on the sets. The insider says her behaviour is a consequence of her superiority complex. "Shveta is a very high-handed person. Once the cameras stop rolling, everybody huddles in groups and starts chatting. Manjrekar and Jadeja are always together, while Archana, Parmeet and Mona form another group. Shveta is left doing nothing. To avoid being on her own, she'll then call her hairdresser or stylist for something or the other."

Shveta Salve
But once the cameras are switched on, all is hunky-dory. The source says that Shveta and Mona are then sporting plastic smiles for each other. "They surely won't allow their cold vibes to show on screen. Image ka sawaal hai."

Shweta's insecurity

The friction started once Shveta realised that Mona was one of the participants who could give her a run for her money. But Shveta preferred to laugh it off, saying, "I'm friends with everyone on the show, be it Mahesh Manjrekar, Ajay Jadeja or Mona Singh. In fact, Mona and I had a whale of time in the dandiya round recently. Ask Mona."

However, Mona kept a stony silence on the issue when we tried to get her version. She neither answered our calls, nor replied to SMSes. If all is hunky-dory Shveta, then why did Mona seal her lips?

Vigilant Parmeet

My best friend: Apart from my wife, it is Apurva Agnihotri.

One thing no one knows about me: I observe a lot and am constantly making mental notes about things.

If I weren't an actor: There's a long list of things I would do—be a restaurateur since I love food and meet people, be a producer, director, writer or anything associated with the creative field, be a businessman since I was into garment exports earlier.

My dream role: Dilip Kumar in 'Gopi' and 'Ram Aur Shyam'

What turns me on: Mental stimulation—a good conversation with a point of view that is intelligent.

My recent buy: Nokia N73 for my wife and myself.

What I love and hate about my profession: I love the fact that being an actor saves us from standing in queues for anything. But I hate the fact that I can't spend much time at home with my family.

My food fetish: Mutton biryani and rajma chawal made by my mother. Archana makes excellent sandwiches.

I'd be lost without: A purpose in life! I wanted to make a name for myself in the industry and that keeps me going.

Last time I was on a high: This morning when I was practicing the Sudarshan Kriya (Art of Living) as it does wonders to me.

What a fan

Ajay Jadeja is undoubtedly one of the popular contestant in Sony's Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa. Recently, he was in Lucknow to promote the show and was giving an interview to a radio station. He was pleasantly surprised when a fan of his entered the station and told him that she is so fond of him that she has changed her name from Naina Singh to Naina Jadeja. Howzzat!

They met on the sets of Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahi and from there on Mona Singh took her friendship with Karan Oberoi very seriously. Soon reports about the two of them being spotted all over the place did the rounds. But Mona, being the ambitious young lady, didn't want to commit to a serious relationship fearing that it would hamper her Bollywood dreams. So she refused to admit to her relationship with Karan. Soon there were rumours that the couple had broken up.

But after a recent episode of Jhaalak Dikhla Jaa, the lady has once again fuelled the controversy. Post her performance on a Bollywood number, host Parmeet Sethi turned his attention to Mona's family for their comments and voila, we see Karan seated with her parents! It was reported a few days back that Mona's mom is very eager to find a suitable match for her lovely daughter. So has the groom hunt ended? And if so, why does Mona continue to deny Karan's presence in her life. Could his unsuccessful career have anything to do with her decision? Only time will answer that question.
