Sony also says 'Nach Baliye'

Plans are on for desi version of American superhit Dancing With The Stars with Siddharth Basu
Shaheen Parkar
shaheen@mid-day.com

After Indian Idol, Sony has plans for another massive show — Dancing With The Stars. Comparisons may be odious, but Star One's big ticket Nach Baliye was loosely inspired by the hit American show.
Though the channel prefers not to comment at this stage, it is reliably learnt that the Sony folks will ink the deal on Monday when they will spell out the details. Says an source, "The channel has been in talks regarding Dancing With The Stars. In the next few days they will make an announcement. They are hyping it as their next big show after Indian Idol."
Fancy footwork
Dancing with the Stars airs on ABC in the United States, besides several other countries like Canada and Australia. The concept of the show is to a pair a celebrity with a professional dancer or choregrapher. The duo then attempts to win a high score from a panel of judges and the maximim number of votes from the viewers. The person who receives the lowest score is eliminated at every round, but they are allowed one last dance at the end of the show.
This means that a professional has to teach his or her partner, so that both can put their best foot forward as a dancing couple. Apart from the dance, there will also be the pain, emotion and tears of the non-dancer partner. After all, matching steps with a professional can be really tough.
Besides the list of Bollywood choregraphers the channel is in talks with, a string of telly, Bollywood and Page 3 faces are expected to be the partners.
'Quiz'zical makeover
What's most interesting about Dancing With The Stars is that it will be produced by Siddharth Basu's Synergy Communications. This marks Basu's entry into a new genre of programming from what he is best known for a quiz master.
This also means that Basu will step over to Sony from the Star network . In the past, Basu has produced shows like Star Plus's biggest draw Kaun Banega Crorepati with Amitabh Bachchan. He has also produced Hum Tum Aur Mum (Star Plus) and Bluffmaster (Star One). Presently, his show Heartbeat airs on Star One.
Incidentally, Sony has earlier announced another formatted reality show, Extreme Makeover, to be hosted by Mona 'Jassi' Singh. The show will have on board a team of doctors who will give individuals with flawed looks (a prominent birthmark, a cleft lip or a victim of an acid attack) a complete transformation by changing their looks.
While Extreme Makeover is slated to air early next year, Dancing With The Stars will air by the year-end.

Watch out, ladies

smooth operator: Ajay Jadeja

Cricketer-turned-television anchor Ajay Jadeja reportedly has a roving eye. It is believed that Jadeja brings out his stock of limericks and corny one-liner jokes whenever he spots a PYT in the vicinity. Now that he's a part of Sony's Jhalak Dikhala Jaa, we want to give some advance warning his female co-stars: be wary of this smooth operator!

Burn the dance floor, O kudiye...

Channels are determined to make celebrities dance to their tunes and stars too are more than willing to do the hip- hop. Shake a leg and make a booty, is their mantra. Every couple on Nach Baliye 2 is reportedly being paid Rs 11 lakhs besides the moolah they earn for rehearsals per day. With every round they clear, the couple earns extra points and lucre. The winning couple walks away with a prize money of Rs 59 lakhs while the runners-up stand to gain Rs 49 lakhs. No wonder, the stars are taking to the dance floor with a vengeance.
Last year there was only STAR One's Nach Baliye to lure the viewer and it straightaway raced to the top. This year Sony is giving competition with its version of the international hit dance show Dancing With The Stars. The latter has assembled a variety of celebrities from chef Sanjeev Kapoor, ex-cricketer Ajay Jadeja to director Mahesh Manjrekar.
The rest of them, however, are TV stars which include Mona Jassi Singh, Shveta Salve and Pooja Bedi.
Nach Baliye 2, on the other hand, has a head start as the viewers already know about it and are eagerly awaiting the second instalment. The TV couples who are all set to to put their best foot forward are hot and happening on the small-screen. As Sameer Nair, COO, STAR India puts it, "We had initially thought of doing a Dancing With The Stars but we realised that it would be difficult to get popular celebrities from different fields who are willing to dance. That's why we came up with our version of the show and it's been a runaway hit."
Both the channels have doled out an exorbitant amount to get top film personalities to judge their shows. Nach Baliye 2 continues with Saroj Khan and Malaika Arora while Farhan Akhtar makes way for Kunal Kohli. Sony had initially roped in Karisma Kapoor but the star asked for more than they were willing to pay and the deal fell through.
Now, Shilpa Shetty has been taken on as a judge along with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Farah Khan.
Both shows start rolling in September. The viewer is definitely in for a visual treat. Now, it remains to be seen which show will have the viewer doing a jig?
Moves and grooves
Sony's dance show Jhalak Dikhlaja starts airing from September 7 every Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday will be the performance episode while Thursday will be the eliminating round. The first episode, however, is being aired on Thursday. Produced by Siddharta Basu, the show will have celebrities from different walks of life paired with a choreographer. It is being hosted by ex-Nach Baliye couple Archana puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi. The celebrities shortlisted for the show include:Mona Singh aka Jassi. She underwent the transformation from the ugly Jassi to the sexy Jessica in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. She is looking forward to making her debut in films and had won the Best Actress Award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2005. Pooja Bedi is best remembered for the Kamasutra condom campaign which she endorsed. She made her film debut in the film Vishkanya in 1991. Her most popular role was in Jeeta Wohi Sikander. She is hosting a celebrity talk show formerly titled. Now she is known for her Just Pooja aired on Zoom. Also turned author with two books, A Fit Pregnancy- A handbook for moms-to-be and Timepass, a biography of her mother, Protima Bedi. Shweta Salve is known for her roles in Kittie Party and Sarrkkar. A student from Sophia College she participated in the Gladrags Model Hunt and became the second winner in 1999. After that she did many ads and even dabbled in theatre with an English play. She also has a film Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi to her credit.
At the age of sixteen Rati Agnihotri played the female lead in the Tamil film Pudhiya Varpukkal (1979). She also starred in Telugu and Kannada films and acted in thirty-two films in South India in just three years. Her fame in South Indian films led to her starring role in the Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye(1981) with Kamal. Sanjeev Kapoor is the most celebrated face of Indian cuisine today. At his best, he can be Chef Extraordinaire, TV show host, author of best selling cookbooks, restaurant consultant and winner of several culinary awards. Nominated for the "Best Executive Chef" in India by Food Service in 1993 and 1994 and winner of the award in 1995, he was also chosen for the Mercury Gold Award at IFCA Geneva (1993) for "Best Meal Concept and Creation". Sanjeev Kapoor one of the top chefs in India has authored many books and hosts the popular television cookery program Khana Khazanaa. Ajay Jadeja belongs to the Royal family of Nawanagar in Gujurat now known as Jamnagar. Ajay is a descendent of Duleep Singh and Ranjit Singh after whom the Ranji trophy is named. An exuberant batsman, and an incorrigible charmer off the field, Ajay Jadeja entered international cricket with an infectious effervescence that won hearts and matches. Mahesh Manjrekar started his acting career in 1984 with the Marathi play Aflatoon, which paved the way for him as an award winning producer with more plays like Dhyanimani, Doctor Tumhisuddha, Gidhade and Akashmaat to name a few. He has directed films like Vaastav, Astitva and Viruddh. Besides direction he has acted in several films including some of his own productions. Akashdeep Sehgal is best remembered as Ansh Gujral of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi... Twists and Turns
Last week STAR unveiled the 10 couples selected for their popular dance show Nach Baliye season 2. Like last time, this time too most of the couples are not ace dancers save for a Hussain or a Shweta Tiwari but everyone from Raja Choudhar to Rasik Dave is eager to put his/her best foot forward. Says Rasik, "The last time I danced was in college over two decades ago. But I am looking forward to a couple of things from the show. First and foremost it will help me lose weight which will make my wife extremely happy. It will be my gift to her after 25 years of marriage." Yet, when the couple got a call from STAR, it was Ketaki who was hesitant to give her nod. This despite the fact that she loves dancing. "I always wanted to dance. I joined films for that but only heroines got to do the jhatkas and then I did serials where there's no scope for dance," sighs Ketaki. The few times she has done the jig for the big screen was in Kal Ho Naa Ho and Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyya. No wonder, Rasik who believes in taking up challenges coaxed her to be a part of the show. Such is his enthusiasm that despite having to take pain-killers after six hours of non-stop dancing, Rasik is gung-ho about the show. "I am getting used to it," he grins. For Hussain who is a brilliant dancer, the show is an opportunity to be paired with his wife for the first time on television. "Since she is not from the industry, there was no scope of us acting together. But Nach Baliye has brought us together on screen," he says fondly. And though Tina has watched each and every episode of Nach Baliye 1 and had a feeling that they would be called for season 2, when the offer actually came, she held back. "I had to do a lot of convincing. She was not very comfortable initially because she felt out of place," informs Hussain. A few rehearsals later, Tina who is a 'okay' dancer is slowly getting into the groove. When Kirti and Sharad Kelkar got a call from STAR they were all but set to don the dancing shoes. "We are a young and happening couple on television. We had to be called," says Kirti confidently. The couple which loves dancing and has a record of sorts for taking to the floor whole night at a celebration party is taking this opportunity to learn the right moves. Of the two, Kirti acknowledges Sharad as a better freestyle dancer. One couple that complements each other as far as body language goes is Gurdeep Kohli and Arjun Punj. "We both are good and the best part of the show is the chance to spend time with your better-half," smiles Arjun who will soon be seen in another STAR One show from September.x Another good dancer on the show Shweta Tiwari had to convince her husband Raja who has two left feet, to be a part of the show. "Dancing is my weakness but please I am not an accomplished dancer," pleads Kasauti Zindagi Kay's Prerna who is grateful to Balaji and STAR for sorting out her dates agreeably. Right now, the couple is just about loosening up with the rehearsals but Shweta has her eyes set on clearing the initial five rounds atleast. "I want to dance on as many new songs as possible and that will be possible by clearing all the rounds," she states. The other couples on the show include Tanaaz Currim-Bhaktiyar Irani, Shweta-Manav Goyal, Narayani Shastri-Gaurav Chopra, Gouri-Yash Tonk and Gauri-Hiten Tejwani. Though the basic format of the show remains the same, it has been tweaked a little to make it more interesting. Instead of 10 weeks, the show will be on for 13 weeks. There will be a wild card entry after the fifth episode wherein one of the eliminated couples can make a comeback. The judges remain the same save for Farhan Akhtar who is being replaced by Kunal Kohli. Saroj Khan and Malaika Arora will continue to give their expert comments. The hosts are yet to be decided but according to Sameer Nair, "the couples of Nach Baliye 1 will come onto the show as and when they are free to host and perform." That certainly is an added attraction to the eagerly awaited show. Though the date hasn't been fixed yet, the show starts rolling in mid-September.

Shveta looks up to J-Lo for jig tips

learning the tricks: Shveta Salve

The actress has been doing her homework for Sony's Jhalak Dikhla Jaa by watching dance movies
Tushar Joshi
tushar.joshi@mid-day.com

One thing Shveta Salve wants to make clear is that she isn't a trained dancer. There has been buzz among her rival participants about how Salve is turning out to be a tough competitor thanks to her formal training. "I don't know who started this rumour, but I have not been to any dance school in my life. I love dancing but have never been coached to dance."
Old friend
Interestingly, Shveta is happy about that fact that her choreographer Longinus is an old friend. "I have never worked with him, but have known of him for a long time. We know each other through a common friend, so its fun to be rehearsing with him."
The practice
Now that she's a part of the competition, Shveta wants to make sure she is well equipped to face her challengers. "Besides having a good time, I know that this is a serious show, so I obviously want to give my all to it." As a part of her preparation for the contest she is revisiting some of her favourite dance movies. "I love watching Dirty Dancing, Fame, and Shall We Dance? There's so much you can watch and learn." Apart from watching movies, Shveta is also reading books and surfing the Internet to get some background on the dance forms. "I didn't know what the waltz or the cha-cha-cha was, until I started my rehearsals. Every form is different from the other. It's a challenge to be able to master all of them."
On the work front, Left Right Left is keeping her busy. "Its fun working on the show, and am happy with the response it is getting."

Is Pooja Bedi dating her choreographer?

Has Pooja Bedi got a new arm candy? The TV host has been spotted with choreographer Hanif Hilal at several places over the week. Incidentally, Hanif is Pooja's choreographer for Sony's reality-based dance show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa'.

Refreshingly, Pooja doesn't mind showing her soft corner for him, squealing in excitement at the mention of his name. "Isn't he handsome?" she asks. She further reveals, "Hanif is from Pune and doesn't know much about Mumbai. He is also an aspiring model and I take him around to meet people. It's been so much fun with him around. We've been to the movies and I also took him along for a brunch recently."

According to sources, Hanif flirts "outrageously" with Pooja while rehearsing. The television host laughs, "He is always flirting with me and we do have a wild time on the sets. Hanif is simple and a very sweet person." So is anything brewing between the two? Pooja clarifies, "I keep telling him not to try and flirt with me. In fact, the other day my dad came to see my rehearsals and I told him about Hanif. It was so funny when dad stood up and told him 'Puttar, zara sambhal ke'. It is all in good humour and we enjoy it."

Justifying her relationship with the choreographer Pooja further says, "You can't help but get intimate with the person while performing a Latino dance form. You are always holding each other and most of the time you are just six inches away from each other. The chemistry is inevitable." And the duo practice for four hours everyday for the competition!

'I'm not a jobless actor'

Shilpa Shetty says she hasn't got into television for lack of work in movies

SUBHASH K JHA

Shilpa Shetty is upset with recent reports that have said she doesn't have too much work on hand at the moment. It all started with Shilpa replacing Karisma Kapur as a judge on the dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (JDJ). It was said that Karisma demanded a huge amount, as a result of which the deal fell through. Shilpa then stepped in settling for a much lower fee. This has deeply disturbed the Shetty girl. "I don't know why I am targeted," says Shilpa. "They called me a jobless actor, which I am not for sure. I currently have two major films on the floor. I know the truth about why I've stepped into Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and how much I've been paid. I see no reason to tomtom my career moves to people who are hell-bent on writing me off. If people see my debut on television as a stepdown, I can't help it. Let me remind them I'm not doing a soap." Incidentally Karisma Kapur, in the past, burnt her hands badly with the soap Karishma-A Miracle of Destiny. Says Shilpa, "I've been offered lots of television work before. So far I resisted the temptation because I didn't want anyone to say I was getting into television because I had no films on hand. It's another matter that even now I'm being subjected to barbs about being jobless! I can't run my career according to the bitching that happens. Right now I'm working on Anurag Basu's Metro where I've a role to die for. If I've chosen to cut down on films it's only because I can't do crappy parts at this stage of my career. I'd rather do a TV show where I get to be part of something I enjoy unconditionally, which is dancing. The best part of doing this show is that my colleagues are Farah Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I've never worked with either in any film. But I've always admired their work."
Talking about insecurities in the profession, Shilpa says, "I've been around long enough not to get insecure about less work now. I've seen so many girls come and go. By God's grace, I'm still around and in a position to do the kind of work that I really enjoy."

What's keeping Aakashdeep awake all night?

Aakashdeep Saigal seems to be the sorts who doesn't like to do things half-heartedly. The actor who's participating in the dance show Jhalak Dikhlaja, is trying his best to master the steps. But his return to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus, leaves him with no time for rehearsals in the day.
So after pack-up, Aakashdeep rehearses his steps late into the night. The actor has apparently been sleeping for three to four hours everyday, what with all the dancing rehearsals that go on at night. Considering the fainting spells that actors have been going through, hope Aakashdeep can carry on with his balancing act.

Mahesh hopes to score for entertaining

Director-actor Mahesh Manjrekar who is one of the celebrity participants of Sony's Jhalak Dikhla Jaa hopes that the judges will give separate marks, purely for entertainment. "Only then will I make it to the next round," he says adding, that if they judge him solely for his dancing he will be the first to go out. Manjrekar who has been rehearsing for three to four hours every day gives full credit to his choreographer Sonia Jaffer for taking up the challenge of making him groove. "I have two left feet and it's quite a task for me to dance," he says candidly. Backaches and leg pain notwithstanding, he's enjoying himself and "slowly getting into the groove..."

Celebs tell us why they decided to participate in Jaalak Dikhla Ja

Rati Agnihotri
I am not treating this show as a dance competition. I am having great fun and enjoying it. In fact, when Sony approached me for the show I said yes instantly. I have danced in films, but that was 24 years ago and that too with a lot of cuts and retakes. Now I have put on weight over the years and my body is stiff. But my choreographer is patient with me. He helped me a lot. Since I was very rusty I started with warm ups and gradually moved on to dance steps. Now I am prepared. I have a few films in hand but now that TV is big medium I am open to do serials.

Akashdeep Sehgal
I am a very bad dancer but am trying to learn and dance well. My muscles are not stiff and neither am I bogged down with inhibitions. But I have two left feet. The whole idea behind taking part in a dace competition is to enjoy the experience. It's a wonderful feeling to share the stage with professionals from diverse fields. Since I am busy with Kyunki I am not getting enough time for rehearsals. I may not reach the last stage but I will try to do my best.

Sanjeev Kapoor
Anything new that you try is going to be difficult. Nothing is easy in the beginning and nothing is achieved without trying. I wanted to be an architect but chose to be a cook. I have been a professional cook for the last 24 years. A few months ago I decided that I will try to do something new every year. I wanted to learn singing but I got this offer to do Jhalak Dikhla Ja and accepted it. My body was stiff in the beginning and I also had to overcome my inhibitions. Now thanks to my choreographer I can at least shake half a leg. Besides my wife is very happy that I am learning dance. She loves to dance and I couldn't give her company. Now we can dance together in parties and clubs.

Mahesh Manjrekar
I took four days to decide before saying yes to Sony. People may not expect me to dance well and they might laugh at my performance. But then what's life without challenges. It's a fact that I am not a good dancer. But my choreographer took it as a challenge to make me dance well. I get tired very fast. My feet were not moving at all in the beginning. But now I am more at ease with different steps though my body is still stiff and my back hurts. May be I will be the first to get voted out. But that doesn't worry me. I am getting tired of making the usual commercial films and don't want to be in the rat race. Dance is just the first step towards learning different things in life.

Mona Singh
It's a wonderful experience to be part of an internationally formatted show that's been a huge success across 27 countries. I love music and the mere sounds of the beats make me shake my legs. I know it's going to be tough competition and everyone is working hard. But then nothing is gained without trying. I don't know whether I will win but I am preparing myself to do my best. I want to have a blast.

Shilpa Shetty
Since the last few years I have been getting offers for serials but I said no because I am not inclined to do television at this stage in my career. The reason why I agreed to be a judge for Jhalak Dikhla Ja is because it is a formatted show and is presented very well. Besides it takes just 16 days off my time and will be over in two months.

Though I will start shooting for my next film Metro with Anurag Basu in the second half of September I will be able to manage my dates for Jhalak. It's not going to be an easy job to judge the participants especially because they have gone through five weeks of intense training. I will try my best to be fair. There won't be harsh comments and criticism. The idea is to appreciate efforts of the participants who are all achievers in their chosen fields and are trying their best to compete in a dance competition. It takes lot of guts to do that.
