When talent is judged by votes

Can voting be the be all and end all of choosing the best participant in a talent hunt show, especially after the method has received so much flak?

This is democracy at its best. Forget politicians, even singers, dancers and actors are chosen by the public nowadays, thanks to the talent hunt shows. As everybody from little girls to screen divas ask you to vote in their support, BT focuses on this talent hunting ka naya funda, which has left most of the 'talented' contenders high and dry.

IT'S NOT ALL FAIR

Vinit Singh, who lost to Debojit Saha in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa despite being considered more talented of the two, says, "Voting ceases to be sacrosanct when candidate's family start providing free booths to public to cast their votes. Mobile companies in the regions provide free SMS facilities. To check things like these, only one vote per phone should be allowed."
Adds Rajeswari Sachdev Badola, who participated in a reality show. "There's no foolproof pattern and the ratio of people voting in one city varies from another. Some areas don't have network coverage."

BIG BUCKS RULE

The commercial angle is of prime consideration for the channels and the sponsors. Pooja Bedi, participant of Jhalak Dikhala Ja reasons, "In the West phone lines are open for two hours after the show is aired and it is ensured that not more than one vote is registered per calling number. In India, service providers allow any number of votes to be cast. So, if there are a thousand loyalists and they have mobile phones, fairness goes for a six." Rati Agnihotri seconds her opinion, "I have been voted out of a reality dance show but I don't know anything about the polls. Whatever decision is given, participants have to accept it blindly. I don't know where I stood, all that I know is the judges' verdict."

GURUS SHARE THEIR ANGST

Known for her crisp judgements in Nach Baliye, Saroj Khan avers, "Judges have the last say, but we say things technically. Before choosing the right people, it is imperative to be assured of their popularity." But singer Ila Arun begs to differ. "It kills talent," she says, adding, "Reality shows should be based either on voting or on the judges' decision. In Fame Gurukul the panel was shocked when Qazi Tauqeer won. The other contenders are discouraged but keeping the channel happy is more important. A reality show is all about the desire to win. So showing both healthy and unhealthy competition is a part of the game but when the public votes, the results are shocking."

BALL IN THE PUBLIC'S COURT

Debojit Saha feels, "When you repose responsibility in the public, there shouldn't be further debate. They judge the person and not the talent per se. A lot of hype was created when I was voted the best, putting my votes under the region scanner. I stand by the fact that if your family members don't support you then it's foolish to expect anything from outsiders." Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant reasons, "I don't think voting is justified at times, but I see more advantages than disadvantages here. Popularity that comes by way of voting can do wonders for one's career."

If Rati Agnihotri scared the audience with her hideous costumes in Sony's Jhalak Dikhhlaja, Shilpa Shetty certainly gave them a fright by wrinkling up when smiling during one of the show's recent episodes. People, especially actresses go to all kinds of lengths to camouflage bags and wrinkles, but Shilpa just shows hers off to the whole world.

On the dance floor, O Kudiye!

Across channels, Sony's similar minded show, Jhalak Dikhhla Ja, is down to its last five participants. Pooja Bedi was the surprise exit in the first round (couldn't the channel have ensured her retention, if only for the glam and energy quotient she supplies?). But now the fight has narrowed to three actors (Mona Singh, Akashhdeep Saigal and Shveta Salve), one ex-cricketer (Ajay Jadeja) and a filmmaker (Mahesh Manjrekar). And despite earlier misgivings, this Thursday's episode was quite entertaining. Every participant has remarkably improved his/her dancing skills, making the performances a pleasure to watch. But the icing on the cake is Manjrekar, who outdoes others and himself every time with his creativity. His 'amba' version of the samba had to be seen to be believed. Let's hope Mahesh doesn't suffer Pooja's fate before the finals.

While Thursday's episodes are shaping up, it's the elimination episode on Wednesday that lets you down. Hosts Parmeet and Archana have obviously told to stretch the suspense for an hour before declaring the eliminated participant. The viewer has to endure endless close up shots of the hapless participants till the result is announced, not to mention the umpteen ad breaks. Frankly, it gets on your nerves.

Break ke baad...

Mona Singh is all set to act in another daily after Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin

Subhash K Jha

For those who've been missing Jassi aka Mona Singh on television, here's good news. Besides hosting for Sony's upcoming reality show, Extreme Makeover, she has signed on another daily show.

When contacted, Mona confirms the news. "I am doing a daily. We're working out the details and the script is yet to be finalised. All I can say at present is that it'll be different from Jassi…"

Talking about hosting the reality show, Mona says, "Extreme Makeover is going to be an emotional challenge for me. I'm hosting this show which does corrective surgery on disfigured persons."

As for movies, Mona has terminated her contract with the Page 3 producer Bobby Puskarna with whom she had signed a film. She says, "Nothing was happening for two years. I realised, there was no point in waiting. At the end of the day it's all about acting. As long as I keep getting exciting offers like Extreme Makeover and hosting a radio show (which I've just started doing), I'm happy."

Besides work, there's no exciting development in Mona's life. "After Jassi… got over, I was at home for two months. I was thoroughly bored. So, now I want to work," she says.

Mona Singh wants to be in TV, radio and films

The actor speaks on how her career is shaping up

Chaitanya Padukone

For exuberant actor Mona Singh, her career is top priority. "I am totally concentrating on my dancing as well as my latest dimension as a radio jockey on Big FM which for me is a 'radioactive reality ' show," enthused Mona who is delighted that she finally knows how to play the 'Dandiya'.
Not surprisingly 'Jhalak..' rival-contestant Ajay Jadeja offered her tips on holding and clashing the 'sticks' the right way "Being a Sardar-ni, there is that balle balle Bhangra element that crept in when I was initially swinging the Dandiya. But gradually I got the correct hang of it and it turned out to be great fun," chuckles the actor.
But wasn't she originally a non-dancer? "Yes, but dancing is my ardent passion .When 'Jassi..' concluded, I was on the verge of joining a dance class to learn Latin American dancing . With 'Jhalak..' happening my dream came true. Imagine, I get to learn dancing and am even being 'paid' for it. And, now I am freaking out," laughs Mona who is a die-hard fan of former Bollywood glamour dance-diva Helen.
"If I get to perform my favourite Helen cabaret number with the guy screaming 'Monica O my Darling' before I make my exit on , I guess my mission will have been accomplished," insists Mona who has "terminated " her filmi-debut contract with producer Bobby Pushkarna (of 'Page 3' ) "because nothing was happening for far too long".
Had she given up on movies after being disillusioned with her initial move? "No way! I will definitely do a movie with a challenging lead role which will also have the naach-gaana syndrome," smiles Mona who will soon be seen hosting the 'emotional' reality TV show 'Extreme Make-Over'(Sony), counseling mentally-shattered victims which will literally be a 'make-over' of an image for her.
Even as Mona's birthday is drawing closer (Oct 8), she is hoping that she "should not get eliminated but be able to have a janamdin hungama on the 'Jhalak...' sets."

'Suddenly men think I'm hot !

...says Mona Singh. So has she finally managed to break free from her Jassi image?

"Ineeded this. Jhalak Dikhla Jaa has given me a new life after Jassi," says Mona Singh, who's over the moon. "The show has changed my life in many ways. People are no longer calling me Jassi. I'm finally known as Mona." The judges seem to like Mona more for her spunk and spirit than her intrinsic dancing skills. "I really like the way the judges know that I've two left feet."

Last week Mona complained about the judges being less than generous about their marks. "I didn't complain. I was slightly disappointed. It came across wrongly in the way my words had been edited. That's reality TV for you. I'm very happy people are finally seeing me and accepting me in a personality far removed from Jassi. They thought I couldn't look glamourous and have fun. Suddenly I'm getting messages from guys who think I'm hot. During Jassi, I connected only with girls. I think I'm on the right track now. I've always been the bubbly girl next door."
Mona gives all the credit to her choreographer and dancing partner Tobey. "He's such a funny person, and so am I. If he cracks up at something I say and laughs for forty minutes flat, so do I. We're basically birds of the same feather. He tells me, bigger the mistake the broader the smile. Over the weeks, we've become really close friends. I also plan to join his classes."

Rea O Rea!

The long holiday weekend saw Ajay Jadeja take off to the golden beaches of Goa. And accompanying him to the getaway was his Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa choreographer, Rea Krishnatraye! But no honeys, don't raise those finely tweezed eyebrows just yet.

A short holiday doesn't mean some work can't be done, eh? And so Jaddu rehearsed for the Sony dance show on the beaches, we assume. And being very much the 'family' man, Jaddu also had his wife Aditi and son Aiman in tow.

But it's not Aditi he was dancing on the beaches with, eh?

Celina Jaitley dances in 'Jhalak..'
After Hours Correspondent
Tuesday, October 03, 2006 18:50 IST

psst...

Actress Celina Jaitley is a trained Indian classical dancer and has been learning jazz-ballet as she gets set to play a night club dancer in her next film, making her the ideal guest on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa..' (Sony).

She will be seen shaking a leg on the show which to be aired today. The other celeb guest is Sufi singer Kailash Kher will sing on the show. Tobby has got a 6 inches muscle tear in an accident few days back.

Despite being adviced to use a plaster, he is still dancing away. It is rumoured that Akashdeep has offered a lamb as sacrifice in Guwahati to win the contest.

Akashdeep and Mahesh Manjrekar kept sitting in Mumbai airport's VIP lounge and missed their flight to attend a press conference in Ahmedabad. Their choreographers boarded the flight and returned only the next day and this has obviously upset their rehearsal schedules. The pairs will be dancing a waltz or jugalbandi and they will perform two dances from this week onwards.

I should not have joined this show'

After his ouster from 'Jhalak...', a furious Akashdeep Sehgal accuses Farah Khan of letting their past colour her judgment

Usha Thomas

Akashdeep Sehgal created quite a ruckus on the sets after being told that he and his choreographer Bindi Khare were being eliminated from 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa..', the celebrity dance show on Sony TV.
Yanking a mike from Archana Puran Singh, he first turned to former flame Farah Khan and let her know that she had judged him unfairly. He accused her of letting their past relationship cloud her judgement.
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was next in his line of fire. "Aap bhi yahan ho aur hum bhi yahan hain," is what Akashdeep is reported to have said. He even told Shilpa Shetty that she had no skills to judge a dance competition and said she kept taking cues from technical director Sandip Soparrkar on how to mark each pair.
"My spirit was being killed by their (Farah, Sanjay and Shilpa's) incompetence in judging dance forms. I was disheartened and expressed myself. I should not have joined this show since Farah was a part of it, but I was hoping she wouldn't be carrying any baggage from our relationship. But I'm glad that from being a complete non-dancer, I have learnt to dance," says Akashdeep.
The only person he spared was his choreographer, Bindi. But Bindi herself wasn't pleased with the actor. "He is a bad loser, is not open to suggestion and his tongue gets the better of him."
