JASSI JAISA SHVETA NAHI!

By ZARIN AMROLIA | Saturday, October 28, 2006 10:7:45 IST

Mona Singh steals hearts and votes to win Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Cheers, whistles and screams were all that could be heard after Mona Singh was announced the winner of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa last night. The entire stage was showered with sparkles as Mona was congratulated by fellow participants of the show, her competitors, the judges and the anchors. The audience went ecstatic with the news and gave Mona a standing ovation while she went bizarre screaming and jumping with joy.
Meanwhile, Shveta Salve, her competitor and the better dancer of the two, took the news very gracefully, but broke down into tears when she was asked to comment on the win.
All this drama took place in the last 15 minutes of the show, after all the audience votes were taken into account. As Jhalak began its last episode at 8 p.m., the first performances were of Shveta and Mona. While Shveta, touted as the next Madhuri Dixit, danced to the Ek Do Teen number, Mona swayed her hips to the Helen song, Piya Tu... The eight weeks of the competition seemed to have taken a toll on these two, since these last two performances certainly would not have got them any winning points.
These performances, in the absence of the judges were for the audiences. Phone lines were open for voting till the first half-hour of the show. And as expected, it was the audience votes which led Mona to win the competition. As for the judges, they had already awarded Shveta the winner with 85 points, while Mona was left with 72 in their last performance of the previous episode.
The next hour-and-half was filed with numerous performances. The eight couples and their choreographers shook their legs with different partners each time they came on stage, choreographed by Sandeep Soparkar.
Surprisingly Ajay Jadeja performed like a natural, while Mahesh Manjrekar was at his funny best. Rati Agnihotri too was graceful, but Pooja Bedi and Sanjeev Kapoor would probably have to go through another Jhalak to call themselves decent dancers. Actor Arshad Warsi too made a fleeting appearance, dancing, and promoting his upcoming show, Bigg Boss.
Judge Farah Khan herself took to stage, dancing on the songs originally choreographed by her. And while her performance was good, it was Shilpa Shetty whose hip shakes stole the wind
out of all the performances last night. Dancing on the number UP Bihar Lootne, this lass could sure give Shakira tough competition.
All in all, the participants were having fun dancing on the stage, with the knowledge that they will no longer be judged. And except for Mona and Shveta, the rest on the sets of Jhalak were happy to get back together and enjoy a musical reunion.
Mona Singh said, "I can't believe I won. I thought I would be gone in the first two rounds. This is my next show after Jassi, and I am glad that the audience loves me so much as Mona, just as they loved me as Jassi."
Toby said, "The first time I met Mona, I knew that she was a non-dancer. But I am really glad that she worked very hard, without complaining."
Shveta Salve said, "Mona is a born winner. I can see that. Yes, the audience did play a major role in making Mona win. But since this is a reality show, the audience involvement is necessary. This show has given me so much recognition in the last three months that years of my career haven't."
Longinus said, "I am an old player in this field, and the first time I met Shveta, I told her not to worry. Even though she was the smallest celebrity on this show, I told her I will make her get the votes from the judges, but for the audience votes it is a different ball game all together."
But judge Sanjay Leela Bansali summed it up best when he said, "Although I do think Shveta should have won, I do not feel that Mona should have lost, as Mona very stubbornly continued to work on being in the show. But I feel bad that the audience let Shveta down."

'I was not a favourite of the judges'

Mona Singh can still not believe that she has won the 'Jhalak..' show

'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's (Sony) grand finale took everyone by surprise, when Mona Singh won over techinically superior, Shveta Salve.

Over eight week's of performances by both contenders ended in a nail biting finish with Mona Singh taking home the crystal trophy and Rs 50 lakhs as prize money. "I am just staring at the trophy," says an ecstatic Mona.

"I think the underdog of the contest has won. I am very happy that I put in all the hard work to see this day. My parents are very proud and it's just a great feeling." says Mona.

Giving Tobby the entire credit for her winning, Mona says, "He is 100 per cent responsible for my win. I was a tough participant to coach. It was difficult to make me move as I was so stiff and fat and just couldn't dance. Tobby took it as a personal challenge to see that I lost weight. First two weeks, he made me sweat and slog by exercising. Only then did he start to teach me the basics of dance.

"I must say that Shveta and Longi are also winners. Shveta is an exceptional dancer and a hardcore performer whereas I was very raw," adds Mona. She recollects how Shveta helped her perfect the dance steps that they had to perform for the jugalbandi round in the finale episode.

On her fellow competitors, she says, "I appreciate their ability and showmanship and often wondered if this competition was just over our heads. I would make special mention of Pooja Bedi who rooted for me when all the other celebs were diplomatic and wanted both Shveta and me to win."

Shveta got a standing ovation from the judges after Mona was announced the winner. "I was clearly not the judge's favourite and I am sure Bhansaliji must have already signed up Shveta for his next film," quips Mona.

Chief creative director, Sony, Sandiip Sikcand says, "The show has surpassed my expectations. There will be a second season to 'Jhalak...' but later."

Who was his favourite? "For Mona, it is a real success story. Going beyond just performances and competitions, 'Jhalak...' emphasises self-esteem, confidence, responsibility, and most importantly, teaches them to strive to do their best. All the celebs were fantastic but my hero was Mahesh Manjrekar. I even voted for him," smiles Sandiip.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali remains unperturbed by his personal favourite Shveta Salve's defeat on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "Why should I take Shveta's defeat or for that matter Mahesh's ouster personally? People presumed Mahesh was a favourite because he's a fellow filmmaker, but it doesn't work that way. Did you see any partiality in the way we gave marks to Mahesh? I'm no great friend of Mahesh.

We have a mutual respect for each other's work. I'm there to do a job. I'm not concerned with the profession of the dancers, only their performances. Not just me, even Farah Khan and Shilpa Shetty gave more 10s to Mahesh than any other contestant. That's because he was absolutely entertaining and he never missed a beat."

Khatta meetha

But as far as skills go, Sanjay refuses to rank Shveta and Mona one over the other. "I was sad when Shveta didn't win.

I think Shveta has all the qualities of a big screen heroine. The last of the
truly great dancing heroines was Madhuri Dixit. But I also love Mona. She's so spontaneous, spunky and all there. I'm very happy for her."

Sanjay confesses that he's had the time of his life on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "I was very sceptical about doing a reality show. A lot of people felt I was too intense to be on the home medium and that it would affect my public image. But I don't have a public image!

When I took it up, I enjoyed it immensely. I truly enjoyed the company of Farah and Shilpa, and Archana and Parmeet Sethi's anchoring. Now that it's come to an end, I feel a little sad. Watching the contestants come and go, climb many steps and then fall, it was quite an experience."

Not again

Sanjay reveals that the only bitter experience on the show was Akashh Deep Sehgal. "But we shall not discuss it anymore."

Farah and Sanjay share a very special bonding. She would insist on digging into his wallet each time she wanted to reward a contestant.

Laughs Sanjay, "We've shared something special for a long time. We've struggled and achieved something in our respective fields. And in spite of our huge differences of opinion along the way, we've reached a comfort level where she can dig into my wallet! I wouldn't allow anyone else to do it."

Given a chance would he judge a television contest again? "No," comes the terse reply.

Unreal reality?

Reality shows are booming! Some original concepts, while others choose to follow. But they have made their place in everyone's heart without fail. But its reality element is always doubted! Time and again there have been debates about the reality quotient of these shows whether revolving around celebrities or the common people.

Riya V Anandwala talks to a few television personalities and gets their view on reality shows, its reality and how far are they convinced!

Sumeet Raghvan

Opinion- People have mixed reactions about these reality shows and so do I! At times it does seem staged. They show the stars or people having catfights which normally are not so hyped. It is very difficult to believe the voting bit of these shows, I feel they are fixed.
Will I do it?- All in all I feel its fun and I would definitely go for it.

Ravi Chopra

Opinion- Reality shows are booming and have grabbed many eyeballs. It's a very good platform for showcasing talent. They are very much real, but of course certain things on the show like voting out a talented person because of lack of mass appeal becomes a bit of a problem. About the voting system it is very economical for the producers and beneficial too. In my opinion they don't intend to fool people.
Will I do it? - I don't want to make a replica of something which is ruling the charts like some have done. If I get an interesting concept, I will definitely materialize it.

Juhi Parmar

Opinion- I have never been a part of a reality TV show, so have no clue what happens behind the scenes. But from the face of it, it looks pretty real. I do have doubts at times, but who knows what the truth is. There are people coming from small towns and earning name and fame through these reality shows, but celebrity based reality shows are mostly to attract the audience, so you never know how real they are.
Will I do it? - Yes, why not!

Achint Kaur

Opinion- At the end of the day it's all in the name of entertainment and is definitely scripted. There is no major difference between international reality shows and the shows made here, they cater to their audience, and we cater to ours. Even Nach Baliye to an extent is scripted, and it is very much evident. There are some elements of reality which don't make these shows look completely untrue!
Will I do it? - If some good reality show comes my way, I will definitely give it a shot. More than participating, I would like to host.

Kiran Kumar

Opinion- Well, it cannot be fixed. Producers and channel officials will never do that. But yes the voting and SMS patterns come across as being fixed. I am very excited for the new show coming up, Big Boss.
Will I do it? - If I get the time then I am game for it!

Cheer up, girl!

Producer Manish Goswami throws a party for Shveta Salve to console her after her defeat in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Sapana Patil Poojary

Moving on: Shveta Salve

Manish Goswami

Producer Manish Goswami, whose serials Aisa Des Hai Mera and Kituu Sabb Jaanti Hai are currently on air, threw a party for actress Shveta Salve last night. It was Goswami's way of cheering up Shveta, who lost the competition to Mona Singh in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. The party, hosted at a suburban joint, was attended by their close friends in the industry.

An overwhelmed Shveta said, "It was indeed a nice gesture on Manishji's part to throw a party for me. Actually, ever since Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa started, I had been saying that irrespective of the result, I would throw a party for my friends and colleagues. But Manishji said that the party was on him."

When Shveta lost the competition, Goswami was among the first few to call her and speak to her. "He was very supportive of me. He tried to cheer me up and said some encouraging words. I have worked in three of his serials. He also knows my boyfriend Rodney (Barnes), and is like a family member to us. I have always depended on Manishji for suggestions at any point of time. Manishji plays the big daddy in my life," Shveta added. When contacted, Goswami said that this party was his way of showing his affection towards her. He added, "It was to acknowledge and appreciate her hard work."

Mona promises to lose another six kgs for Karan!

After shedding all those extra kilos during the reality dance show, Mona Singh now wants to lose more weight to feature in good friend Karan Oberoi's album someday

SHARIN WADER

Mona Singh just can't keep her feet on the floor nowadays. The actor who confesses that she only knew how to do the bhangra, is quite elated now that she has won the dance competition Jhalak Dikhla Ja on Sony. So did the Jassi tag do the magic? "My popularity as Jassi did help me but then I have also put in a lot of hard work," she says, clearing her stand. But the other finalist Shveta Salve was the clear favourite of the judges as they felt that she was a better dancer. Did this affect her in anyway? "Shveta is a brilliant dancer. But yes, it did affect me when the judges kept saying that. They should have realised that it's not strictly a dance competition. If it was, then it would have been only for the choreographers. It was meant for people who didn't know how to dance but made an effort to learn," she says.
So why didn't she voice out her concern like how the other contestant Akashhdeep Saigal did? "I did feel like but then If I did, it would look like I'm complaining and I am the last person to do so."
Many felt that her choreographer Toby Fernandes got a little too close to her while dancing... "No, it's nothing like that (laughs). Toby is very passionate about dancing. When we used to practise Rumba, he used to tell me, 'Rumba is a very passionate and romantic dance form. Just consider me as your teacher whose job is to teach you.' And for that dance, we actually scored 29 points," she says.
Now that she has lost a lot of weight, will she continue dancing to maintain her figure? "Yes I will. In fact, I think I will call Toby to my house to dance with me," she says jokingly.
During the dance competition, one person who was constantly seen cheering her was her good friend Karan Oberoi. "Karan is very special to me. When we are together, we are like a house on fire."
So will she ever feature in any of his music albums? "Oh yes. I have promised him that I will lose another six kilos and will one day feature in his album," she says quite confidently.

Mona-polising voters

MONA LEGAYASONA: The Jassi avatar of Mona Singh helped her garner maximum audience votes than a relatively unknown Shveta in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Last Friday saw the grand finale of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, the Indian version of the international popular dance contest show, Dancing With The Stars. This programme is very popular in Australia and in the UK it is aired as Come Dance With Me. Sony has bought the rights of Dancing With The Stars format and did a good job of it. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa was no doubt a much more slicker version of Nach Baliye 2. The latter, on the other hand, looks very tacky.
Like most reality shows, Jhalak also had its ups and downs and its fair share of surprises. The hottest find of Jhalak was of course Shveta Salve and her choreographer Longines Fernandes. Both of them have been in their respective professions for some time now, but it was Jhalak which catapulted their talents. From the very first episode, they were consistent and good and both somehow complemented each other. It was clear that they should win.
But then the surprise package was Mona Singh and Toby. They did manage to reach the finals and if you look at Mona's graph, it was impressive — from being a clumsy dancer to one with a lot of confidence and finesse towards the end. Besides, the junta was with Mona, obviously because of her Jassi avatar. No doubt, she would garner the maximum audience votes than a relatively unknown Shveta. But certain things do baffle the viewer. I remember an actor friend of mine telling me weeks in advance that Mona Singh would win. This, when Mona was nowhere near the top three. How did the man surmise it? "Simple," said he. "Sony needed to bring back Mona post Jassi and launch her as an actress. But the Jassi image was hard to shake off. So to give her a new and slicker look, nothing could be a better launchpad than the Jhalak stage. So there you go."
Come to think of it, in retropsect, certain things do fall into place. Mona Singh starts out as a weak but potential dancer. Shveta from day one proves a hit with viewers and judges alike. A couple of episodes later, word leaks that Shveta has trained as a dancer professionally.
a) Why didn't the channel look into the matter while taking her in as a contestant?
b) Why didn't the organisers check the allegation out when rumours were floating and disqualify her then?
Much later, when Shveta and Mona were in the running, there was a subtle character assassination on Shveta. That she refused to part with 20 per cent of the prize money to her choreographer and that she was very arrogant. Agreed, her being arrogant does make her unpopular with the contestants and the crew and obviously they will not vote for her. But to the average viewer her attitude would not make so much of a difference as her movements. Also, is there any guarantee that Mona Singh would give 20 per cent of her prize money to Toby?
I am not saying Mona Singh did not deserve to win. What I am saying is that it was Sony's responsibility to defend each contestant, be it Shveta, Mona, Ajay or Mahesh, and refute rumours when they are rife. Their silence speaks volumes of the channel being hand-in-glove with the source of such rumours.

Think beyond Anthony

What's with the name Anthony? Looks like the Christian community in India do not have much choice in names apart from Anthony? Or that writers and directors don't have much imagination beyond that name. Otherwise, why would every Christian character in Hindi films be named, Anthony. First Amar Akbar Anthony, then Anthony Kaun Hai and now My Name Is Anthony Gonsalvez. Or is it merely the name is stuck on one's mind like the endless number of filmi Vijays.

Boogie woogie with Toby
Tuesday, October 31, 2006 21:12 IST

The choreographer reveals why Sushmita Sen and Hrithik Roshan deserve taking centre stage.

Sushmita Sen

I met her for a show in Hong Kong where she was to dance on the 'Mehboob mere' ('Fiza') number. We struck a rapport instantly when she greeted me saying, "Hi! Sit and relax. Sorry to have kept you waiting." She strikes a conversation easily. She'd even greet the group dancers with a 'Hi!' Once when she saw a male dancer sitting quietly in a corner, she went up to him and said, 'There's a lady wanting to meet you.' When you teach her, she's all attention. She even asked me to come home and teach her the steps. She's meant to be on stage and on screen. Her body movements and facial expressions are amazing once the camera is on. If she doesn't like anything, she will be forthright about it. Yet she's too soft-hearted to insult you ever. She treats her staff like her children. She enters her house with this huge smile. So enamoured they are with her, that I have often seen them blush in her presence.
  • She's very close to her daughter Rene. Half her heart is beating in her. They enjoy chatting with each other. She patiently hears Rene relating about her day at school. It's a divine decision that they are together.

Hrithik Roshan

As in his films, Hrithik puts his mind and soul even in his shows. He studies the sketch of the stage in detail including his entry and exit points. Before the show, he goes into deep thought and thinks over the number he has to enact. Though initially he wasn't a great dancer, when I see him perform, I wonder whether he's a better dancer or an actor. When he dances, he doesn't hold back anything. He has a rubber-like body. His heart beats with the music. You can see it on his face. I don't think he's a master of any dance form. Rather, he masters whatever you teach him, be it jazz or Broadway.
  • From the sound engineer to the light man to the choreographer all are important to him. At the same time, he never acts familiar and keeps his distance.

Toby's chart

Assisted Farah Khan in 'Joh Jeeta Wohi Sikander' Branched out first to choreograph the Nadeem Shravan Nite. Specialises in using themes, concepts and props for his stage shows. Choreographed Best of Broadway in Kathmandu. Choreographed the Fukuoka show titled Chai Chai in Japan at Space Park.
  • Trained Mona Singh in 'Jhalak Diklha Jaa' and emerged as the winning duo.

As told to Farhana Farook

Meet the new identical twins in town!

Though it's generally winners who celebrate their victory, what better way to pep up those who haven't than throwing a party. And producer Manish Goswami did just that for friend Shveta Salve who was the runnerup in Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Shveta as always was at her dancing best. Shilpa Shetty, looking ravishing as ever, made an appearance at the party. Farah Khan too showed up for a short while Mona Singh came in with 'good friend' Karan Oberoi and hit the dance floor. Again it were the men who ruled the dance floor. Mahesh Manjrekar, Siddharth Basu and chef Sanjeev Kapoor made their presence felt on the dance floor. However, except Varun Badola and Rajeshwari, the other couples Delnaazz and Rajev Paul and Gaurav Chopraa and Narayani Shastri preferred to stay away from the dance floor. Shveta shook a leg with friend Dipshikha while boyfriend Rodney Barnes was seen chatting with Sohail Khan. Ami Trevedi came in with costar Amit Verma. Poonam Dhillon, who made a solo entry, looked great in her black outfit.
