Kurta and denim jacket — that's Aakashdeep for you!

When Ekta Kapoor calls for a Diwali bash, you can be sure that the entire telly industry turns up for it. And it sure did! On Monday night, onlookers saw a host of TV stars getting down from their respective vehicles to go up to Ekta's house. The pretty Rakshanda Khan seems to have put on a little weight around the middle. Well, with Diwali and Eid delicacies doing the rounds, that had to happen! Rishi Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor came colour co-ordinated in black. Friends Shilpa Saklani and Ritu Chowdhary were once again seen together, these two sure seem to be painting the town red these days! The much in demand Ram Kapoor walked in with his pretty wife Gautami. Although Eijaz Khan did not walk in with Anita Hasanandani, the vibes were certainly in the air. Shabbir Ahluwalia chose to go the casual way and turned up in jeans and a white shirt, but he still looked good as always! Others who made their presence felt at Ekta's bash were Aamir Ali, Pawan Shankar and Anju Mahendroo.
WHO'S THAT GIRL?
She's hardly ever seen at page three dos, so it was a pleasantr surprise to see Sanjeeda make an appearance here. The girl sure turned heads in her simple but elegant salwar kameez. CONFUSED? Seems like Aakashdeep Saigal was a tad confused about which look to go for — western or traditional. So the lad decided to mish mash both and come out with a unique look of his own — kurta with jeans and a denim jacket! We always knew this guy's an original!

Jhalak hosts root for Mona
By: Tushar Joshi
October 26, 2006

Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puran Singh

Archana Puran Singh has become an expert host, and has mastered the art of being the perfect emcee. However, her husband and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa co-host Parmeet Sethi had to deal with an entirely new concept.

"I am thrilled that Parmeet has made it through as a host with flying colours. I was nervous for him initially, but this time around he is in the driver's seat while I am the passenger!" she says.

Alvida time

After having been a part of the show for so many weeks, Archana now finds it hard to say goodbye. "I don't know what is going to happen to me after the results on Friday. It has been an overwhelmingly emotional journey right from the start. I can proudly say that working on this show has been the best experience of my professional career," she says.

Mona Singh

The Jhalak cast and crew have become like an extended family for Archana. "I usually keep my kids away from the sets, but the Jhalak set is so child-friendly that they love hanging out over there with us. Our vanity van is like a mini apartment and Parmeet and I spend a lot of time with the kids in there."

Among the contestants, Archana does have her favourites.

"I was rooting for Rati (Agnihotri) to make it through, as I know her personally. Besides her, I have newfound respect for Ajay Jadeja. He's a true sportsman and the way in which he exited the show was commendable. Apart from him, I also loved Mahesh's choreographer Soniya Jaffer. Even Sanjeev Kapoor has been a friend for a really long time."

Mona par fida

Between Mona and Shveta, Archana says, "I'm with Mona. But I want Longi (Shveta's choreographer) to win too as I have known him for the last 25 years. He used to train me during Jalwa. He's a hardworking man and deserves every bit of of the success he has got."

As for Mona, she says, "I have known Mona for the last couple of years. Apart from being extremely popular with the audience, she is also a very sincere girl. She has surprised everyone by making it to the finals of the show."

Parmeet too admits that his vote is divided between Mona and Longi. "I would love to see Mona take home the trophy, but I am also cheering for Longi. We go back a long way," he says.

On the work front, the actor is waiting for interesting roles to come his way. "I don't know what I will do after DON. I don't want to get stuck in a show that doesn't interest me. Jhalak has given me tremendous scope and confidence to do different things, and I hope to carry that experience forward."

'Greedy and me? What rubbish!'-Shweta

Shveta Salve reacts to rumours that she doesn't want to share her prize money with choreographer Longi

Shveta Salve, who is very excited over the approaching finale of Jhalak Dikhhlaja was stunned when she heard accusation that she didn't want to share her prize money with her choreographer Longi. "Greedy and me? What rubbish," fumes Shveta. "People probably don't know that 20 per cent cash prize has to go to the choreographer. After that, what I want to give him is my business. It more about the kind of equation that I have with Longi than anything else," says Shveta. So, is she ready to part with her booty. "Why just just 20 per cent? I believe that they deserve 50 per cent of the cash prize as they have worked equally hard to make us dance." Shveta says that she doesn't want to talk about the money because she hasn't won the contest yet. "I haven't won the contest, so how can I talk about my plans? Right now, I am concentrating on my dance. I don't want to build castles in the air. What if it doesn't happen?" she says. But have the rumours affected her equation with Longi? Shveta says, "Longi was equally shocked when he got to hear of these things. I don't know what people are going to achieve creating trouble now, when the contest is ending." Shveta is also upset that some of her co-contestants have said that dancing is easier for Shveta than it is for Mona Singh and hence the latter deserves to win. "I may be complimented on my natural ability to dance, but believe me it's not as easy as it looks. I haven't had a complete eight-hour sleep for the past few months. My co-contestants haven't seen me slogging. If I was a trained dancer they wouldn't have chosen me for the show. Should I under-perform just to keep others happy?" questions Shveta. Shveta says that though she was troubled with these rumours she has now got back to practising for her next performance. The actor is now ready to move to the beats again.

We love we loathe

This is where we give a thumbs up to everything that's hot and happening in the city, and a tight slap to those who, well, deserve it.

We LOVE the fact that Your Life is strong enough to bring about a change that was long overdue in hookah joints.

In a story titled "Hooked on to hookahs", we spoke of the harmful effects of Sheeshas, and how they were being served to minors.

After the story was published, one of the regulars we interviewed at Cafe Mocha informed us that the eatery has started checking IDs before serving 5% tobacco and .5% nicotine (disguised in scented smoke) to college kids. We're glad we cleared the air on that issue.

We LOATHE the fact that the winner of a dance contest should be decided on the basis of goodwill votes rather than her dance moves.

Ex-Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa participant Pooja Bedi has publicly announced that between finalists Mona Singh and Shveta Salve, Mona deserves to win because she is a "better person".

Even the dance show's hosts Parmeet Sethi and Archana Puransingh are rooting for Mona. We know Jassi won the hearts of a million, but on the dance floor, Shveta jaisi koi nahi.

'I gave Shilpa Shetty a hug'

Akashhdeep Saigal says all's well on the sets of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa

After lashing out at judges of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa sometime ago, you are now back for the finale?

• I didn't lash out. I just expressed something I felt at that point. I'm sure even the judges, the channel and the production house knew that I was just expressing something I felt then. That's why they telecast it.

Was everything fine on the sets when you went back?

• Absolutely. It was all very positive. It's the same happy Jhalak Dikhla Jaa family.

Did you meet the judges?

• I met Shilpa (Shetty). She was very sweet. I went and hugged her. I asked her if she was still angry and she said no. And we both laughed.

What about the other judges, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Farah Khan?

• If I meet them I will say a hi and give them a big smile. There's nothing on my mind and I'm sure there's nothing on their minds either. We are all professionals and mature people.

Do you regret speaking out in that episode?

• I spoke what was right for that moment and I don't think I need to say anything anymore now. At times issues get blown out of proportion in the media. And this happens with me often!

Are you a better dancer today?

• Yes, I've definitely improved tremendously. For the finale I picked steps in half an hour. Whether I'm a great dancer or not, I've learnt a lot.

It's time to put on your dancing shoes!

The competition thickens between the finalists Mona Singh and Shveta Salve on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on Sony Entertainment Television, as the grand finale unveils tonight

While Sanjay Leela Bhansali compares Shveta's grace to that of Madhuri Dixit's, the other judge Shilpa Shetty thinks no less of her. "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa has given India a new dancing star — a star is born already," says Shilpa. But that doesn't take the limelight away from Mona, who's been rising on the popularity meter slowly but steadily.
Talking about the odyssey so far, the much-lighter Mona (yes, the gal has lost eight kilos) gushes, "I have emerged as hot, sexy, namkeen from the earlier tag of cute and innocent girl." Well, the success behind these two charming ladies does go to their choreographers — Toby and Longinus.

And more on the show... going by the buzz doing the rounds, the grand finale will be nothing short of an entertainment explosion. While all eight choreographers will dance to Latin American dance specialist Sandip Soparrkar's steps, the eight celebrity-participants will get together to scorch the dance floor. And this is not all, judges Farah Khan and Shilpa Shetty will take to the stage too. Farah will dance with four choreographers in a self choreographed performance. And the hosts Archana Puran Singh and Parmeet Sethi are all set to charge the already electrified atmosphere with their bhangra beats! And a li'l bird tells us that Arshad Warsi is expected as special guest.

So, who will be crowned as the dancing diva — Mona or Shveta? To find out, watch the two-hour telecast of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa tonight at 8 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

May the Best Lady Win!
BY A STAFF REPORTER | Thursday, October 26, 2006 10:45:1 IST
TV viewers vote for the best dancer of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa who will be revealed on Friday on a Sony TV extravaganza featuring all original eight contestants

This Friday, the final episode of popular dance reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' will finally unveil its winner. After eight weeks of scintillating performances, the contest has now narrowed down to the two finalists, Shveta Salve and Mona Singh, who've both wowed judges as well as audiences with their dance moves.
The winner will walk away with the prize money of a whopping Rs. 50 lakh. And contrary to media reports, the prize money will be split equally between the contestant and her choreographer. That had been the rule right from the beginning of the show. The eight contestants were paid for every level they reached, so the person who got eliminated in the first round (Pooja Bedi) obviously didn't make much moolah on the show! The choreographers were also paid by the channel for every episode they shot for. Similarly the costumes for both the partners were paid for by the channel.
All eight contestants will come back on the show to perform for the last episode on Friday. While that portion will be pre-recorded, the last 15 minutes of the show, where the results will be declared will be telecast live. There is no runner-up prize money, so the loser quite literally will get nothing except the money she gets for that one episode. The final dance has already been performed, the judges have given their marks, it now depends on you, the audience, on who to crown the queen of dance. So who will finally clinch the crown? Our guess is as good as yours! Afternoon decided to ask viewers who they thought should be the winner; and it seems that Shveta Slave has a slight edge with more admirers than Mona Singh!

Here's what the participants have to say...

Shveta Salve
For me, the finals took place the last time Mona and I performed. The judges gave me excellent marks and I really hope the audience does that too! I'm very happy with Longi and my performance, I'm glad it was appreciated so well by the judges. I danced like a maniac, which was quite evident on screen! I knew I had to give my best shot, no matter what. I hope the audience sees all the hard work we've put in, they should remember it's a dance competition and not judge it according to an actor's popularity. I just wish the most deserving person wins! The show's been an amazing experience for me, I couldn't have asked for better exposure. And to be applauded by such senior people is humbling. I hope all my hard work pays off in the end.

LonginEs Fernandes
I'm convinced about my performance, the judges have also said what they had to say; now it's up to the audience to decide whom they want to see as the winner. I'm happy with Shveta and my performance; we've both put in our best efforts and it's shown on screen. All I'd like to tell the audience is that they should vote keeping in mind all the dances. The show has been a fantastic experience for me. I've had more exposure in 10 weeks than I ever had in 10 years! It is one of the biggest achievements of my career. If we win, it'll be great but even if we don't, that'll be ok because we know we gave it our best shot.

Mona Singh
I think I've come a long way since the first episode; it's been major growth for me both as a person and as an actor. This show is for non-dancers and when I came I had two left feet but over the months, Toby taught me how to dance, and we'd have 8 to 10 hours of rehearsals everyday! I'm quite confident about winning, we've both worked really hard and for a non-dancer to reach the finals is really amazing, I think. All I'd like to tell the audience when they vote is to keep in mind the improvement I've made over the weeks. I got their love and support during my 'Jassi' days and I hope they support me again! I'm here to work and the experience on Jhalak has been really phenomenal. It was difficult and I'm proud of reaching the finals. I've made new friends and set a new trend that even non-dancers can learn and get better. And to reach the finals just shows that the audience appreciates me. That's good enough for me!

Toby Fernandes
I'm not really bothered about winning or losing. I'm very satisfied with the way we've performed and the way the audience has responded to us has been really amazing. I think Mona has achieved quite a lot in these eight weeks. The way she's improved in her dancing style, lot so much weight, is really nice. I already consider us as winners. We've shown the audience what we can do and I hope that they notice it. I'd just like to tell the audience to remember the hard work we've put in and the way we've improved over the weeks before they vote. The experience I've had on the show has been nothing short of terrific. It's been an amazing platform and I'm happy with the exposure I've got. Wherever I go people recognise me and that's the ultimate high. What my future plans are? I can afford to hike my prices, irrespective of the result of the show...

Longinus
Longinus started dancing 20 years ago, and has been a professional choreographer for over 10 years. He has been a winner of the Disco Duo Dance Championship in 1987, the Solo Dance Championship in 1989-90 and 91. "When I started out, I used to emulate John Travolta and Michael Jackson. Over the years I have learned break dance, modern jazz, free style, hip hop and last of all, ballroom dancing," said Longinus. Recollecting memories, he said that he loved to jive, as he always saw his parents jiving.
Longinus has choreographed for singers like Sunita Rao, Shwetha Shetty, and Sharon Prabhakar. He has also choreographed Bollywood films like Jaanleeva, O Maria, Agneepankh and others. Talking about Bollywood dances, he said, "What can be termed as a Bollywood dance is what Amitabh Bachchan does in the song 'Khaike Paan Banaras' and 'Sadak chaap'. What the actors are doing now is international dance." He would love to choreograph Shahrukh Khan for his energy, Hrithik Roshan for his classiness while dancing, Amitabh Bachchan for being a fabulous performer on screen.
His partner on the show, Shweta Salve is hardworking. "During the day she shoots for her serials and I have my classes. We only practice between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. She has a lot
of energy, she puts in great effort into her performances
and she has newer complained about the late practice hours," said Longinus.
To be a good dancer, Longinus said that all one needs is confidence. "You can learn the steps and get your dance perfect after a lot of practice. But when you go on stage you should have the confidence in yourself to carry it off," said Longinus.

Toby

Toby is a self-taught dancer and choreographer. He teaches salsa, jazz and contemporary dance to his pupils. "I started dancing 14 years back to lose weight. And since then, Latin American dance has been my favourite. However, in Mumbai, Bollywood dances are popular. So I try to incorporate Latin American dance steps with Bollywood music," said Toby.
Toby has choreographed shows for singers like Suneeta Rao, Mehnaz, Shaan, Leslie Lewis, Anu Malik etc. Talking about his partner in the show, Mona Singh, Toby said that he is very lucky to have her. "She works hard, she is a fast learner, and she will not give up. She will continue dancing until she corrects her flaws," said Toby, who says that he is living his dream. "My dream has been to dance. And I don't want this dream to end", said Toby.
Other than dancing, Toby also sings. "I used to sing in shows. I also had a band. But with being busy in dancing, I have stopped singing," said Toby.
The most difficult dance to master are Indian classical dances. "Bharatnatyam and Kathak cannot be mastered in a few weeks. They need years of practice. Unfortunately they are not popular in Mumbai. I would love to see them revived," said Toby.
