Has Mona Singh's film being scrapped?

Though Mona Singh has won Jhalak Dhiklaja on Sony, it looks like there's still time for her to dance into Bollywood. "I had signed a film but now I have terminated the contract. It has taken a lot of time. The script too is not yet ready," she says and adds, "But I still dream of Bollywood." Will Jassi's dream come true this time around too.

Yesterday, Mid day ran a poll on the results of the dance program Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.
We all know that Mona Singh won the contest on television. However, what we didn't know was just how popular Ms Salve was!
The SMSes poured in and the response was overwhelming.
But the decision was clear.
Shveta won Mid day's SMS poll by an enormous margin. The poll showed that 71 per cent votes went to Shweta Salve while the rest of the 29 per cent votes were for Mona Singh.
Guess this time, Shveta jaisi koi nahin.

People are bored with muscles: Akashdeep Saigal

Today there is hardly any K-series fan who doesn't know Akashdeep Saigal. He is the perfect prototype of a TV soap villain. And he loves playing those roles. "Negative roles excite me and they are more challenging than playing the role of a chocolate hero," he quips. Meet Akashdeep Saigal who is ready to rock you with his grooves in the new dance show Jhalak Dikhlaja.

Dancing to success
I work out regularly for an hour at the gym at Grand Hyatt. Other than that I do dance exercises. That's rocking! It's one hour of non-stop dance like aerobics. It helps to strengthen your abs and tighten your body along with the flexibility. I 'm also learning salsa now.

Also, I think, I'm lucky to be a part of the mega dance show Jhalak Dikhlaja. This reality show has been a success in different countries and now the producers of Kaun Banega Crorepati have brought it to India. I got to learn different types of dances like cha cha cha, disco, salsa. I was a pathetic dancer but now I'm learning and trying my best to compete with all the other contestants.
Gen-X mantra
Working out for a fit body can never be a fad. It is a very important part of grooming your life. In our profession we always challenge time. We don't get time to sleep and it is bound to affect our health. But what gives us energy is regular exercise. Having a fit body is very important in our profession.
I love myself and my body. There was a time when I used to yearn for a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone but now I don't think like that. Now the lean look is in. People are bored with muscles. Gen X loves a trim and well-toned body.

Vegetarian delight
I am not a proverbial foodie. I eat to survive and anything that satisfies my hunger is okay for me. I do not have a passion for trying out different types of cuisines. Since I am a vegetarian, I prefer simple food like yellow dal and gobi bhaji. My favourite drink is milk. Also I don't follow a three-course meal routine. My food habit is extremely flexible and changes from day-to-day but the contents remain more or less the same like muesli or porridge with milk, juices and dry fruits. I do not eat roti or chawal everyday, may be only once a week!

Sweet corner
I am a big fan of sweets. It's not that I have sweets everyday but I always have all the prasad at home. We have Ganapati at home and everyone knows that no one can touch the modaks except me! I have never followed a strict diet but now I'm seriously thinking of starting it because I'm having too many modaks these days!(laughs)

Kitchen rules
My mother was a very good cook but now she is too old to enter the kitchen and my sister in-law has taken over. After her I am the greatest cook. I make quick meals like soups and noodles. I am extremely good at making corn bhaji. I don't follow a rule book in the kitchen neither do I have the time to experiment with different recipe books. I just pick some masalas that I find before me and make my dishes tasty. I always take special care to garnish the dishes. They should look nice too or else I don't feel like eating. From my appearance to my food everything should be visually appealing.

No looking back
I used to hang out a lot with friends but now-a-days I don't get time. When I find some time I prefer to visit their homes and spend quality time by catching up on each other's life. Earlier, I used to have a lot of junk food like samosas and vada pav but now-a-days I avoid them. But I don't miss those days. Each day is different and I prefer to live in the present and enjoy it!

My first Dance Round

Mona Singh
TV actor

On the first performance day of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, I was told that Toby and I were going to perform last. I was a little disheartened, because I was afraid that the judges would lose interest by the time we took centre stage. And to top it all, I was performing a jive on Gori Gori, which happens to be Farah Khan's song.

So, considering the circumstances, I was a nervous wreck. Thankfully., the performance went of well, except for one tiny glitch. But during my stint with Jhalak, I learnt that a big mistake calls for an even bigger smile. So, a big grin and a little bit of acting helped cover it up, and got me triple 8 in my first round!

As told to Kanika Parab

T hings are finally brightening up for the Indian televi- sion industry, as big names in the film and fashion world are keen on making their presence felt on the idiot box. Television is no longer Bollywood's poor cousin, as everyone has re- alised the mass appeal as well as the market potential of the small screen. Fashion designer Manish Malhotra is the latest to join the bandwagon, as he will give a makeover to small screen's favourite bahu, Parvati, of Ka- hanii Ghar Ghar Ki. Manish joins the club of Nikhil and Shantanu (Kaun Banega Crorepati), Satya Paul (Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi), Ritu Kumar (Yeh Meri Life Hai and Kavvyanjali) and Vikram Phadnis (Zee Cine Star Ki Khoj), who have already tried this medium. The Bollywood list in- cludes the likes of directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Kunal Kohli and singers Sonu Nigam and Himesh Reshammiya, who have now become house- hold names, thanks to the pop- ularity of reality TV in India. Out of the box: What took television so long to at- tract their attraction? Says de- signer Ritu Kumar: "Televi- sion industry is becoming more and more focused. Everything from clothes to the overall look of the show is now considered important, which was not the case in the days of Doordarshan." Agrees director Kunal Kohli: "There's really some big money involved in televi- sion and everyone has re- alised that." Kunal thinks that his appearance on Nach Baliye has added to his popu- larity. "Of course, with TV you can relate to your fans in a huge way," he says. In Ismail Darbar's case, SaReGaMaPa worked wonders, "I did music for hits like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, but no- body knew me. After this show, everyone recognises me. That's the magic of televi- sion." Future perfect: So, is TV at par with films? Kohli says: "Money wise, yes. If you look at the turnover of Balaji, it's more than that of Yashraj Films. As far as its popularity is concerned, television is sure catching up, but it will take time to beat the populari- ty of Hindi films." Ismail too feels the same. "The way things are going on, I'm hope- ful and confident that one day television will get its due." bgera@hindustantimes.com

No more television for Sanjay Leela Bhansali
By Subhash K. Jha, IANS

Sanjay Leela BhansaliAce filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who got flak for favouring Mahesh Manjrekar on Sony TV's dance show "Jhalak Dikhla Jaa", says he is unperturbed by his fellow-filmmaker's ouster and Shveta Salve's final loss to Mona Singh.

"Why should I take Mahesh's elimination or Shveta's defeat personally? People presumed Mahesh was a favourite because he's a fellow-filmmaker. But it doesn't work that way," Bhansali told IANS.

"Did you see any partiality in the way me and other judges gave marks to Mahesh?" asked Bhansali, who judged the dance show with choreographer-director Farah Khan and actress Shilpa Shetty.

Other well-known personalities who tried their hands at dancing were cricketer Ajay Jadeja, celebrity chef Sanjiv Kapoor, TV actor Akashdeep Sehgal, talk show host Pooja Bedi and actress Rati Agnihotri.

"I'm not great friends with Mahesh in any case. We have mutual respect for our work. I was there to do a job to the best of my abilities. I was not concerned with the profession of the dancers, only their performances.

"And not just me, but Farah and Shilpa also gave more 10-out-of-10s to Mahesh than probably any other contestant. That's because he was absolutely entertaining and never missed a beat," he explained.

But as far as skills go, Bhansali also ranks Mona and Shveta among the best. Mona, who carved a niche for herself as Jassi, walked away with the winning prize.

"Of course, I was sad when Shveta didn't win. I think Shveta has all the qualities of a dancing heroine. The last of the truly great dancing heroines was Madhuri Dixit. But I also love Mona. She's so spontaneous and spunky. I'm very very happy for her."

Bhansali had the time of his life while judging the show.

"I was very sceptical about doing television. A lot of people felt I was too 'intense' to be on the home medium, and that it'd affect my public image. But I didn't care a damn. I don't have a public image. If at all I have one, it should be of someone who laughs, dances and sings a lot. That's how I am in real life.

"I enjoyed 'Jhalak...' immensely. I truly enjoyed the company of my co-judges Farah and Shilpa. I enjoyed Archana Puransingh and Parmeet Sethi's anchoring. Watching the contestants come and go, climb that many steps and then fall... It was quite an experience."

"The only bitter experience on the show was Akashdeep. But we shall not discuss it," said Bhansali.

Farah and Bhansali shared a very special bonding. She insisted on digging into his wallet each time she wanted to reward a contestant.

"We've shared something special from 1992. We've shared some really mad moments. We've struggled and achieved something in our respective fields. And in spite of our huge differences of opinion, we've reached a comfort level where she could dig into my wallet. I wouldn't allow anyone else to do it."

Given a chance, would Bhansali judge a TV contest again?

"No," came the terse reply.

Mallika refuses jhalak on telly

The actress is too busy to take on the whopping Rs 2 crore offer to be a judge on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2

Fame ke side effects: Mallika Sherawat

Actress Mallika Sherawat has refused to be a judge on the new talent hunt show, in the second season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on Sony. The actress was offered Rs 2 crore to judge the talent hunt show for 13 episodes, but she was forced to turn down the offer.

A close friend of Mallika says, "She was keen on judging the show initially. But when they asked her to be present for 13 episodes she couldn't adjust her dates according to the channel's requirements."

But the channel seemed resolute on signing Mallika Sherawat for Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2. So they revised the amount and offered her Rs 1.5 crore for six episodes. However, Mallika didn't budge from her stand. Her friend says, "She was completely against doing a show where she couldn't be able to make it to the final round."

Mallika was said to have told the channel, "It won't be fair to the contestants if I leave the show midway. And why should I cheat my audiences for money?"

Mallika is currently shooting for Anees Bazmee's Welcome. She is also doing Kamal Hassan's next, which sees her playing a vamp for the first time. Her forthcoming film Fauj Mein Mauj will see her as a socialite who gets trapped in an army camp. It's a laugh riot, and needless to say, comedy has become Mallika's forte since Pyaar Ke Side Effects.

No show for Rati

Back to Section Stories

Ranjib Mazumder

Rati Agnihotri's experience of working in daily shows does not seem to be a pleasant one. Rati had agreed to play

Waiting for Godot? Rati Agnihotri
Apurva Agnihotri's mother in Kaajjal Sabbki Aankhon Mein Basi on condition that she will play a prominent role in the daily show. However, the show has been on air for almost two months but Rati's character is far from being a prominent one.

"Rati has been getting good offers from every production house including Balaji. But, she was never interested in television, so she continued to reject all those offers. She accepted Kaajjal, as the production house (Twenty Twenty Television) had promised her a prominent role in the serial. However, more than one-and-a-half months have passed, and she still is not a significant part of the show. In daily soaps, out of sight is out of mind. The storyline in the serial too is changing drastically from what it was earlier and the production house does not seem too keen on developing her track," says a close associate of Rati from the production house.

Rati says, "I accepted the serial as I liked the script. The serial is currently concentrating on the romantic track between Apurva (Dev Pratap Singh) and Surveen Chawla (Kaajjal). Although my character has not been developed as yet, I am sure that it will soon play a significant role in the show. As I am not shooting daily for Kaajjal, I have kept myself busy with films, social work, and family."

Rajesh Pavitran, COO, Twenty Twenty Television, explains, "The show is a love story and it has a certain format. The track is going to open up in the future where other characters will also play an important role. Rati and I are very clear about how the story and the characters will proceed. I don't think Rati has a minuscule role in the story. Her character is a prominent one and that's the reason why we have spent big money to get her in the show."

A hopeful Rati adds, "Films have always been a priority. The reason behind choosing Kaajjal was the strength of my character in the show. I guess this is how television works. I am just hoping that something good will happen to my character in the future."
