First of all interesting the decide between readers and writers. We are all readers and then you have the few who are trying their hand at writing and I love the process to see some gems make it through and shine and they have a platform a ready audience to whet their skills and to know that with at encouragement the flower . It is for me a wonder filled experience.
But it's when the cockiness sets in, irrational accusations, inability to accept a counter point of view that the beautiful process is interrupted.
I would like to mention a few writers here, Juhi Meera, Jenny, Semanti who are aware that I read them but comment on and off and will definitely tell em in some way if something stood out good or bad. They have never pressured me for regular comments and I commend them.
There is Twiggy whose story I am yet to read but she pms me regularly with no pressure notes accompanying .
Charlotte an author I read res once in a while and comment rarely but have never seen a note that admonishes just thanks those that took the effort.
To the above I feel I owe them more than cursory comments
Some authors do interact initially but as readership grows it becomes harder, a post here and there to acknowledge would be nice.
None of us are experts if we were we'd be published and proffessional critiques . so if we resort to IF we have to keep in mind our limitations. And for those of us who aspire to go further especially those that want to write keep in mind this audience is huge it's your network who knows who is a scout or who knows one... So don't cut that nose to spite thy face
On a closing note I personally know of happy endings I know a writer who started here and is now a published writer ( and not a self published one)

No wonder why all this authors have lots and lots of readers including me 👏

Well, all I can say is that such writers are unfortunate to not have readers like u...

Not commenting on FFs is a crime for some writers. But when something is forced upon you, you don't feel like doing it. This is normal human behaviour. Liking and wanting to write a few words of appreciation has to come from within. Not by force.

Well..after reading this I dont know what exactly I should say..alright..I am a writer too...I hardly update. .I never reply individually...but always thank everyone together before posting a new update. ..

I dont mind if only 2 people read my work becoz honestly. .writing is a stress buster for me...also I never demand silent readers to comment on my work...its always their will..though I do tell them to comment occasionally...becoz sometimes it feels good to hear from them..

Lemme tell u something. ..I tell them to comment or else I will remove them from my pm list...but honestly. .I never do that! :P if u ever read my fic..u will realize 50 percent readers comment n others dont..but to be honest I have never ever removed them from my pm list
and u know why? Becoz I understand their pov

I am a reader too..and a silent one on many fics... :D and so I completely agree with u..from readers pov..

And shruti..u are one big example in my case..u were a reader of my work...u used to comment regularly. ..and then u went silent. .hell...I dont even know if u read my work anymore...though I do see ur like there sometimes :P so I know u do drop in..so I guess u know me better here...becoz I never demanded any comment from u :) and still pm u telling u abt the updates :)

@BOLD- aahhhaa... you take around a month to update one chapter.. one you updated in september but i was busy with studies and office work... bear with me for 1 more month.. than i will force you to update jaldi jaldi..

and what you meant i am one of the biggest example.. kar delete meko.. 😡batati hu tujhe... 😛 yes yes i know you better than others and also.. your happy birthday to u is coming..

Speaking as a writer and reader, no one should be compelled to comment. But it has some serious effects that can snowball with time:
1. the writer feels under-appreciated. It takes hours to plan an update and bring it to life. And when they don't get a response, they tend to not update and that starts a vicious cycle. And when the silent readers do speak up, it is often too late.

2. the fandom suffers. Under-appreciated writers and vm makers may simply chose to stop. This is their choice of course, but that makes the fandom that much smaller. And who wants that?
-fandom doesn't come with the first chapter only... you have to wait and if your story is good people will gradually come to you.. i have seen many writers who got only 2-3 pages comment on their first story but now they get around 70-80 pages comment.. so a writer need to have some patience..success comes to those who work hard patiently..

Personally, I don't force ppl to comment if they don't want to and I keep my blog public.
-i know you di..😆

But I do reward those who do take the time to comment regularly by sending pms and extra stuff. I write for myself and if someone out there likes it too, that's just added bonus.
-and readers also get happy when their comments are acknowledged by the writers

But honestly, if you have ten minutes to read a chapter, u have 30 seconds to write a short comment most of the time. That's what I believe and I do my best to leave feedback on every ff i read and every vm i watch.
-here i am not trying to clear the stand of a silent reader...please understand this.. i am talking about the readers who once used to comment on every updates they read but later turn into silent one just because the way writers handled them...
Nice discussion TM😊
thank you

Loved the topic. I am not a big name in this forum, but I love reading a lot. past few months i have gone through a lot of FFs - most of them were already completed, so i only liked them, did not bother to comment. Now I am following only a few writers, where i comment in each and every chapter.
I must say the biggest put-off for me is writers who become so irregular. There were a lot of awesome stories where writers go MIA and never come back, or put up notices as to when will they be back but still don't keep their promises, or suddenly discontinue one story and start another. However sad that i am, i have let go of all those stories.

I also feel apprehensive when i am commenting on stories which are very very popular, as i feel out of place when i see first few pages of comments by the ardent readers who are writer's best friends. Honestly, i have even tried spamming and chatting in certain threads only recently, and i am finding that it is not my cup of tea. There are only a handful of writers with whom i have exchanged PMs, that too only when they had sent the first PM, saying they liked a comment i wrote. For those writers, i am willing to go an extra mile to give a nice feedback.

Authors don't trust new readers. Readers don't trust new authors! (Just an observation - no taking sides/ judging :) )

is it?? never knew.. because i always search for new stories by new writers..😆

I hope they check this thread and do the same :)
😊

I can suggest a few good ones 😉

-hahaha sure i will pm you after papers..😳

-no, you got it wrong i am trying to justify the stand of a silent reader.. i can't all i am trying to say is that few readers are forced to become a silent reader.. reasons are the writer obviously.. so why should a writer do so in first place and thn complain regarding silent readers?

From a writer's POV - some readers are silent just because they are well silent.
-i am not talking about those silent readers... 😕

If you (By you I don't mean you as Shruti but a general you 😊) have never commented or liked on a story how will the author even know that you are there and how will they then treat you fairly/unfairly?
-they should treat fairly atleast to those who comment regularly..??
do a reader have to stick to a writer to prove them that they are reading their stories..??
for some readers two words comment are like insult to their story.. oh yes you heard me.. because someone sent me a pm stating the same.. writers send them pm asking why you left 2 words comment..?? ye toh haad hai di.. if that reader turned into a silent one you can't blame her right?
if a writer makes grammatical mistakes.. that's okay because he/she is new to writing or sabki english ek jaisi nai hoti.. i agree to this fact but then why writers can't accept two words comment..??

I know so many readers who have never commented on my works but have only 'Liked'.
😕 may be they are very busy.. and read only the dialogues and run away.. like my lil sis.. hehehe😆 (oh this one is interesting my sis never reads anyhthing except dialogues... she always say di jab usko padh k samajh aa jata toh what is the need to read the rest)

Some even come forward and say they have read everything that I have written but never commented or liked! (Although they are very vocal otherwise) And I wouldn't have even known that if that member wouldn't have revealed it! So what is the reason here?

So when an author complains about silent readers it includes all 'varieties' of it and not just the one who have turned silent 😊

-exactly some don't come out of their shell because of this very reason.. some people are too protective about themselves.. treat your readers well they will come back to you..
(it was you only i don't remember who said i love my silent readers also..😕 right? you get 150 pages comment now... that's the proof)

thank you for commenting.. not every writer do so...😃

When I comment on such threads, I speak as a reader first as that is what I was from the start. Only later on in my posts I add from the writer's POV :)
