Vipul Gupta hospitalised for heat stroke
By: Tusshar Joshi
April 17, 2006

Vipul Gupta
The temperature is soaring and the telly stars are feeling the maximum burn. Long outdoor schedules, lack of air conditioning on the sets, irregular working hours and eating outside food everyday is taking a toll on the health of actors.

The most recent victim is India Calling actor — Vipul Gupta. Vipul was admitted to the hospital after he started vomitting on the set and was diagnosed with a stomach infection. "I think the heat took its toll on me. I am currently on antibiotics and avoid eating outside food."

He agrees that part of the problem is the soaring temperature "It is something you can't avoid. Outdoor shoots are an inevitable part of any daily soap. It's just that one has to take care and drink lots of water.

Also it's advisable not to stay out too much and take indoor breaks whenever possible."

Playing it cool

Vipul D Shah (Optymistix)
Show:
Jet Set Go

We have an AC floor whenever we are using a studio. If it's an outdoor shoot like Jet Set Go then we start the day early in the morning around 8-30 or 9. We try to avoid the 12-30 to 4-30 pm , since it's the hottest at that time of the day. It's important to provide actors with fruit juices, and prevent them from dehydration by offering instant energy boosters like Glucon – D. I personally think that if any actor is cool in his head then he wont suffer from any heat related issues.

Nivedita Basu (Senior creative head — Balaji Telefilms)
Show:
Kya Hoga Nimmo Kya

We have air-conditioned sets and make up vans to make sure no one suffers from heat stroke.

Rupali Guha (Film Farm)
Show:
Tumhari Disha

It's not just actors who bear the brunt of the heat, but the entire crew including technicians as well. I make sure that we don't use buildings that don't have air conditioners for shoots. Also we try and wrap up the outdoor shoot when it isn't that hot outdoors. Lot of actors also suffer from the constantly changing temperatures when they move out of their vanity vans in the heat.

Manish Goswami (Siddhant Vision)
Show:
Aisa Des Hai Mera

We have AC vanity vans in the months of April, May, June. Also there is nimboo paani and chaas on the sets instead of chai. We try and avoid shooting in the sun in the afternoon and make as much as out of the evening time. I think its very important to make sure the actors are not overexposed to heat.

Kinnari Mehta
Show:
Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka

In the summers we don't shoot in non-AC studios. Also if there isn't enough room then we call mobile make up vans. We try and do as much indoor shoot as possible.

I spend a lot on books, music and movies!"

Money. That's what drives everyone in the final analysis, whether in the glamour world of acting or the hard grind of scripting and producing. Cashin' In sits down with TV celebs to know well they handle their financial matters, and tracks their spending patterns.

The plain Jane Chandini of India Calling has little knowledge of handling finances, but she makes it a point to keep track of her investments. Mansi Parekhtalks to Riya V Anandwala about her views on worthy investments. Read on to know where most of her money flows...

What's your way of handling money?
Mostly it's fixed deposits. I also do those three year investments where the money doubles or something of that sort.

Who is the brain behind these investments?
My dad! I know nothing about them. I just give my cheques to him and he does the needful. I also have a CA who helps my dad.

What about investing in properties?
Not my personal investment though, my family has certainly bought a bunglow in Lonavala.

Are you an uncontrollable buyer?
Yes, I very much am. Like last month I bought 50 DVDs at a stretch. I don't really give a second thought when it comes to buying things which I am crazy about.

Where does most of your money go?
I spend loads on three things. Books- I have innumerable books, music- I am a music fanatic and movies- I love watching movies of all sorts.

What about gadgets?
I go crazy when I see gadgets. I bought a new iPod, portable DVD player and bought a new cell phone which unfortunately got lost in five days.

What about splurging on clothes and footwear?
You will be shocked to know that my mom does my shopping. I don't shop for clothes and stuff.

What are your views on loan?
I definitely think that it's an easy way out. But my policy is clear, buy what you can afford.

Who will be beneficiary of you insurance?

Me, I don't know about anyone else as I got my insurance policy done a few months back.

Do you own a car? Is it on loan?
Yes, I own a car, and it's not on loan

How are you by nature, when it comes to your finances?
I have a balanced attitude when it comes to spending. I spend on things which are worth my money.

At the end of the day, how will you describe yourself, a woman who depends on her family or a self-made woman?
I just graduated last year, so when it comes to spending, my family does it all. But yes it's somewhere in between.

Do you bank on any other profession?
Music...

Ayub Khan

Ayub Khan:"People are not being fined for indulging in vandalism"
It is ridiculous to even think of such laws creeping in. I do agree that India is conservative as compared to the West but people being fined because of such things is nothing but outrageous. People are not being fined for indulging in vandalism, breaking shops and all of that, and if the law concentrates on such an issue, then it's silly.

"I am not an angel"

There are times in all our lives, when we desire the need for divine intervention; times, when life refuses to acknowledge the seemingly obvious and decides to take refuge in a world that is far away from ours. A world that gives the body and mind the spiritual healing that it yearns for. We, at Telly Chakkar.com decided to delve deeper into the lives of our favourite stars and know a little about their lives beyond the obvious.

Those raised eyebrows and vampish looks tell us a lot about the on screen Nigar Z Khan, but what lies beyond that, we wonder! Contrary to her on screen image, the actor has a calm personality and has a unshakeable belief in God!

The dusky beauty lets her heart out to Riya V Anandwala about spirituality.

"Allah is everywhere"
Indeed! My connection with him is direct. I get a very peaceful feeling when I am in a deep conversation with the Almighty. God is always there with me, no matter what. Allah is everywhere…

Only one power
I don't read namaz all five times a day, but yes, I do my prayer once a day. Even before going to bed, I have a small chat with Him. God is one for me, it's never religion first or God!

"Islam is a scientific religion"
There are certain taboos I agree, but I am not an angel. I believe that Islam is a very scientific religion, and I appreciate that a lot. I try and keep up with whatever I can.

"I do fast"
Ramzan is a cleansing period for me. I get extreme positive energies in that particular period. I try and fast as much as I can. Even when I am in a fix, I try and do whatever possible I can.

Love thy God!
God is the one name which I remember whenever I am happy or crying. I guess that is the best way to let things out. Even during relationships travails and other depressing moments I talk to him, which is a major relief!

Shrishti in joint venture with her saas
By: Tusshar Joshi
April 25, 2006

What... no jhagda?
Sulbha Arya with Shrishti Arya
Pic: Rane Ashish

They are working together for the first time, and not many in the industry know that producer Shrishti Arya and veteran actress Sulbha Arya are saas and bahu in real life.

Scheduled to go on air on May 15, on SAB TV, Twinkle's Beauty Parlour will have Sulbha Arya in the role very different from her popular Kanta bai image.

"She and Narayani (Shastri) jointly run the beauty parlour. It's something you haven't seen her playing in a long time. Her character's name is Fatimabi," revealed Shrishti. So how was it working with her mother-in-law?

"I had a character in mind, with a specific age group, and approached her with the role. She told me she would love to do it, provided there were
no date hassles. Fortunately, for me, that wasn't an issue, and she decided to join the beauty parlour."

Scream fest

Shrishti said she would be conscious of the fact that her saas was watching her every time she went on the set. "Of course, I tend to be a little more careful with her around. I remember once, I screamed very loudly on the set — and said 'sorry', too, with the same vigour."

Money matters

How did she pay her ma-in-law? "For me, she's the most reasonable actor around. She's had more than 20 years of experience and worked across various cross-sections of shows. When it came to payment, she left it to me."

Did their off-screen relationship bother other co-stars on the show? "I don't think so. She has actually worked with all my leading ladies. She knows them and shares a very cordial relationship with the actors. Actually, I am the one who's working with some actors for the first time."

Mansi Parekh
Mansi Parekh is the new face on STAR One's India Calling which is gaining popular ground among viewers. Read on to find out more.

Serial you love to be part of… Tara, a serial on Zee TV… That's a character I would like to play. Another serial that really interested me was Rubaru, that starred Sandhya Mrudul. I would also want to be part of a show like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.

If you were put on the TGILC2 stage… I would make a total fool of myself. I still have inhibitions on being on stage especially if it has got to be impromptu comedy.

The fact that makes you say, Mano Ya Na Mano! - I always wanted to be a singer as that's what I am trained for. Life took its own turn and today I am part of a television serial. Life, I think has its own goals and that amazes me.

Your Yeh Dil Chahe More for… Work, activity, challenges. These are some things that I need in large doses. I think I want longer days as 24 hours in a day is too short for it.

One place you feel Home Shanti Home - My bedroom, it's the place I unwind and where I am myself.

Your favourite Remixed album - Remixed music is not my thing. I am more into Ghazals of Mehendi Hasan. I like few film songs. In English I enjoy the music of the 60's… Elvis Presley!

What is your India Calling - Today, India is young and in the midst of a load of activities - social, economical and every area is developing. We are a new generation and must realize the great values we have. People in other countries are learning from us, why would I want to go anywhere?

When some one says Jet Set Go, you would love to pack and leave for - Goa… Anytime!

What increases your Heartbeat - I get very anxious at the thought of not having work to do. That scares me!

Message for your fans - Thank you so much for choosing to watch India Calling among all the other shows on television. We are putting our best efforts to keep you entertained.

Love thy sibling!

Sibling rivalry has always made headlines - be it the Lata-Asha spat or the recently in news public spat between the Mafatlals, siblings up in arms against one another makes the gossip mills go overboard! And if these were not enough, the latest family to be embroiled in a controversy is the Mahajans who are perhaps the worst affected of the lot.

The television industry abounds with siblings - sometimes they work together, sometimes they work in primetime shows on different channels and sometimes they argue on the selection of shows. Riya V Anandwala spoke to our celeb brigade to find out what sibling rivalry means to them and how they deal with it!

Rohit Roy

Rohit and Ronit Roy: Rohit has been in the industry since a very long time. Ronit who started of with films later stepped in televsiion. Both were spotted together in Sarrkkar

Any sort of rivalry is healthy if one knows where to draw the line. This mostly happens when two siblings are in the same profession. In our case it's the other side of the spectrum. There was a time when Ronit was going through a bad phase in his career, but I did pray for him and he did the same when things were not in my favour. I am not saying that we never fight, we probably have arguments on each and every issue!

Bhaktiyaar Irani

Delnaz and Bhaktiyaar: Delnaz is six years elder to Bhaktiyar and has been in television since a very long time. The younger sibling has just started off and both had worked together in Batliwala House No 42

No! Sibbling rivalry is not at all healthy! There can be no competition between me and my sister. Firstly because of our gender, and if there can be any competition than it can rather be between me and Rajev our Rakesh! A have a brother too, and if we two would have been in the same profession I am quite sure, there would have been no sight of rivalry! Our bond cannot be shaken by Tanaaz or Rajev either!

Nigar Z Khan

Nigar and Gauhar:While Nigar sets the small screen on fire, Gauhar, her younger sibling rules the ramp! The two have never worked together.

No, Gauhar is like my baby, she is four years younger to me. I can never ever think that she is doing better than me or envy her in any case I think it all depends on the upbringing and how closely knit you are as a family! It depends on the mother, whether she instills the feelings of love and respect in her kids for each other!

Mukul Dev

Rahul and Mukul Dev- Dev's have tried their hand at both! While Mukul fits more in televsion, Rahul prefers the big screen!

I have never really been a situation like this, so wouldn't know what exactly happens! I have always wished my sibling Rahul for the every best in life! That's because he is elder to me and also that he is far more dedicated, disciplined than I am. I, in many ways look upto him. I have always been taught to respect my brother. Rahul more than my brother, he is a father figure to me.

Arunima Sharma

Arunima and Dipannita Sharma- Dipannita is the elder and along with modelling has dabbled at movies too. Arunima has just entered the telly industry!

Dipannita is two years elder to me, and I don't see any competition between us. I am very happy with what she is doing and even the happier of where I am. I see no rivalry between us for such a reason ever. She is certainly very ahead of me and will alwayd\s be and I don't find it a reason for jealousy ever! Parents are the most important people who are involved in this situation. They should always instill values in their kids which manifest respect for each other.

Kanika's birthday horror
By: Vickey Lalwani
May 1, 2006

Kanika Maheshwari
Actress Kanika Maheshwari's (Ami of India Calling) 25th birthday party on April 24 turned into a nightmare when she almost burnt her face while blowing out the candles on her cake, leaving her eyebrows and eyelashes singed.

Kanika's family and friends had gathered at her home on the night of April 23.

At the stroke of midnight, Kanika lit the candles, and just as she was about to blow them out, a small glow sputtered into a huge flame and burnt her eyelashes, eyebrows and a part of her face near the ears. "I withdrew just in time, else..." sighs the actress.

Snow spray led to it

How did the flame suddenly grow bigger? Kanika reveals that at the very moment that she was blowing on the candles, a friend (from the industry) sprayed the contents of a gas can (which creates fake snow) in the air. "That led to the accident," she explains.

Then, chaos ensued. The cake was spoilt, as all the water used to douse out the fire had fallen on it. And Kanika was feeling terribly uncomfortable.

"I simply used ice on the wounds and thought they would heal. That night, the burns erupted into boils. So, next morning, I rushed to a dermatologist in Juhu, who gave me some injections and put me on tablets and ointments."

Desperate measures

For two days, Kanika did not shoot. "The producers of India Calling were sweet enough to understand that I was not in a position to attend the sets.

From the third day, I gradually started shooting, using touch-ups to cover my burns, especially on the eyelids and brows." Kanika also had to trim off parts of her singed hair. "Kya karti? Thode baal bhi jal gaye the," she smiles.

Mystery man

But who sprayed the gas? " I cannot name him. All I will say is, he is a male from the industry. He is a friend, and it was just an accident. He didn't know what it would lead to." Is she dating him? "No. I am very much single," she says.
