Love calling for Nisha-Vipul
By: Tushar Joshi
March 14, 2006

I'm too busy:
Vipul Gupta
Just good friends: Nisha Sareen
Vipul Gupta, who plays Aditya in Shrishti Arya's India Calling, is dating Nisha Sareen from K Street Pali Hill.

Gupta's friend, who worked with him previously and refused to be named, said, "Vipul and Nisha have been friends even before K Street Pali Hill. Both of them stay in Bandra and have common friends. From what I know, they are not just friends, but also seem to be dating each other."

Another actor close to Nisha said, "He was there to cheer her on the debut of her play, Birdsong. They even went for coffee together, after it was over."

Laugh out loud

When contacted, Nisha, who plays Disha in Kavyanjali and Dweep in K Street Pali Hill, laughed out loud when we asked her the question. "Who told you about this? We have been good friends for a long time. I am not dating him at the moment."

But what about co-actors who have spotted them together and speculate about their friendship? "Yes, I do go out with him to parties and events, but that's because we are good friends. In fact, since he has left K Street and joined India Calling, he's become busy with his schedule. At the moment, I am excited about my play, and television is keeping me occupied as well."

Gupta admits he knew Sareen even before K Street. "Nisha is a really warm, loving friend. In fact Ashwini (Kalsekar) and Nisha are two of the closest people I know. They have always been there for me in difficult times."

He didn't deny going to Nisha's play to cheer her up. "Yes I was there, so were some other friends. Both of us have this group of non-television friends who we hang out with. That evening, we all went to watch it since Nisha's mom, Poonam aunty, is directing the play, and Vikram (Kapadia) is a friend."

Busy, busy, busy

Gupta added that this isn't the right time for him to date anyone. "I am too busy with India Calling. Also, I have my films, Anjaan and Saturday Nights. In fact, recently, I performed for the Star Parivar awards with Mansi (Parekh). We were the only jodi from Star One. For me it's a great honour to be on that platform. And the response I am getting for my role in IC is really heartening."

When asked if he misses hanging out with Nisha, he said, "I have very few friends in the industry. Most of them are from K Street, and Nisha is one of them. I am single at the moment."

"I bought 13 pairs of shoes in Hong Kong"

Kirti Gaikwad makes for a pretty picture. Many would agree to that. Though she's known to carry herself with aplomb, the petite actor prefers to call herself 'pleasantly plump'! She has three shows on her plate right now - Sinndoor , India Calling and Kahiin To Hoga.
Kavita Shyam caught up with the erstwhile Kammal beauty to find out how she maintains the cute look.

Have you streaked your hair?

Yes, a honey blonde shade.

How much time do you take to garb up?
If I am shooting, 10 minutes, and if it's for a party, I take 20 minutes

What suits you better? Indian or Western?
I think I look good in both.

Chappals or Shoes?
Chappals

What do you prefer - glares/coloured contacts?
Glares, any day

Tees or Singlets?
Singlets

Formals or Informals?
Informals

Where do you pick up your clothes from?
Many places. Si Branche and Flash in Bandra and Lorenzo and Saheli in Lokhandwala.

Which is your shoe stop?
I love to shop for shoes at Regal, Catwalk and Citiwalk.

Anything you love to collect or are obsessed with?
I love to shop for and collect shoes and bags. I had gone to Hong Kong and bought 13 pairs of shoes, special chappals and nine bags. Still, I feel its never enough to shop for bags and shoes

What comes to mind when you hear Indian Fashion?
Sari

The most fashionable man and woman in the television industry?
Dolly Thakore is very stylish according to me, besides, Kabir Bedi is a style icon too.

But above all, my husband, Sharad Kelkar is an icon to me, he looks fabulous in whatever he wears.

Your favourite designer?

Ritu Kumar and Ritu Beri

Are you a part of the 'shorter the better' culture?
Not really. I believe in being comfortable in whatever I wear and looking good in it, whether it's short or long.

Any accessory that's close to your heart?
No accessories for me. My husband had gifted me a platinum and diamond ring, that's closest to my heart.

How do you sum up yourself?
I prefer to wear clothes that I am comfortable in and try not to follow fashion blindly. A loose tee from Fabindia works wonders for me. Also, I am a bit plump so I have to be careful of what I am wearing. I love to wear lip gloss and blush on to hide my cheeks.

Tumhari Disha to get justice

Tumhari Disha is soon to get another disha, with the help of two lawyers who enter the plot next month. Raavee Gupta and Manav Kaul are the actors chosen to play the two legal eagles in the Zee show, produced by Filmfarm Productions.

Raavee Gupta

"Both Raavee and Manav play interesting cameos. There will be a court case coming up in Disha's life. Manav will represent Disha, while the opposing counsel will be Raavee. Both of them are excellent artistes and they will take a very interesting stand in the show," says producer Rupali Guha.

Manav Kaul, who played the lead protagonist among the dimunitive characters in the Jaaved Jaaferi starrer Jajantaram Mamantaram, is quite excited about his new assignment.

"I play a lawyer who helps Disha to rescue her husband, DK. It is similar to Sunny Deol's role in Damini," says Manav, who has acted in TV shows like Bhabhi (he played a devar) and will also be seen in Amrit Sagar's new film 1971. This theatre actor-director will begin shooting from 22 March for the show.

Tumhari Disha is the story of Disha, played by Chhavi Mittal, who marries DK to save the family from impending bankruptcy and to pay her debts towards her foster family.

Kirti yearns for a film with the Big B
She became an instant household name with her histrionic skills in Kammal on Zee. Later on, she climbed up the populari- ty charts as the spiteful Niharika in Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka. Now after a string of televi- sion projects, actress Kirti Gaikwad dons a much-hyped role in StarOne's India Calling.

Recently you made an entry in StarOne's popular soap, India Calling. Tell us something about your character in the serial?
I play the mysterious Manisha aka Minididi of the female lead Chandni in India Calling. This is the first time that the mystical character got unveiled in one of the episodes. So long, she was only being heard over telephonic conversations with repeated mentions in the plot. But now the audience can see her appearance on screen. Manisha is an out-and-out small town girl — very homely yet ambitious at heart. Hailing from Jalandhar, she has that simple-sweet persona to charm others with her candid innocence. In pursuit of her goals, she travels to Mumbai to try her luck in the showbiz industry. However in the process, she makes some wrong choices that leads her astray. Meanwhile, Chandni makes a trip to Mumbai in search of her beloved sister.

Kammal, Aakrosh, Kahiin To Hoga, Sinndoor: Tere Naam Ka — your kitty seems to be spilling over with small screen projects. Has television brought you all the creative satisfaction that you seek?
Absolutely! Diverse roles means playing myriad characters and enacting a plethora of subtle emotions. If it was a grey shade such as Niharika in Sinndoor... , the title role in Kammal saw me portraying a positive character, while Manisha draws out a complex personality. I guess, it's all fun to be able to delve into varied traits of the human mind and live a thousand lives at the same time.

Do you feel that the current spate of serials generating the voice of today's women and dealing with contemporary issues has set a new trend that deviates from the ubiquitous saas-bahu sagas?
Every other genre has its own flavour, be it the saas-bahu tearjerkers or the aaj ki nari bandwagon. Moreover, the winds of a changing scenario are inevitable. But honestly, I enjoy playing a confident middle-class woman with down-to-earth principles and head always held high.

From Kanpur to the city of dreams, Mumbai — the journey's been a long one. How did acting happen?
Well back home, I was very much into theatre with Nadira Babbar's Ek Jute. Having delivered a lot of stage acts in between, I wanted to do something different to break the monotony. And quite akin to Manisha's character (quips), I travelled to Mumbai and accepted an odd job. But in due course of time, I got fascinated with television and offers kept pouring in.

Nowadays, onscreen love birds turning into offscreen couples has created a rage of sorts. How did love strike between you and actor Sharad Kelkar?
Obviously on the sets! Where else could it be? (laughs) Both of us were supposed to do the serial CID together, which ultimately fizzled out. And it was during those occasional meetings on the shooting floors, that the love bug bit us. Now we are happily married for the past seven months after tying the knot in June, last year.

Are you game for film offers in the long run?
Not really. Nevertheless, I intend to keep my options open in case of meaty scripts. I would definitely toy with parallel cinema or performance oriented roles in commercial flicks. And yes, who can turn down a role opposite Big B (Amitabh Bachchan) himself! (laughs).

Dron drown from K Street Pali Hill to India Calling
As Dron in K Street Pali Hill, Vipul made a great impact but was soon replaced. That didn't bother him much though. He kept trying and is now back in action as a cool yuppie in India Calling on Star One.

Your stint in K Street... seemed to be a smooth sail initially. What went wrong? Why did you quit abruptly?
Well, nothing actually. Nor did I leave the serial midway. My dates were clashing with a Bollywood project I had signed then, so I had no choice but to leave. You need to concentrate wholeheartedly on a venture that you undertake. A lukewarm approach can hamper your commitment. You have to be clear cut, not in two minds.

Then what prompted you to take up India Calling?
The script was awesome, I couldn't refuse it. Moreover, the film I was doing was almost complete. India Calling is directed by Bhushan Patel, who's also made Guns and Roses, Jeet and a string of hit films. I found the storyline exciting too.

You play the male protagonist Aditya in the serial. Do you identify yourself with the character?
Maybe to some extent. It has several shades to it. Aditya is an out-and-out cool brat with a heart of stone as his only grey vice. However, he's a normal, contemporary lad with an element of softness too. I mean, on the whole he's not a bad fellow.

And his nicer side is portrayed through his affair with the female lead...
Exactly! Even a tyrant melts when Cupid strikes. Chandni, (played by Manasi Parekh) the heroine, comes as a perfect foil to Aditya's disposition. They not only hail from different social strata but are brought up in contrasting setups. While the man flaunts his sports car and safari suits, the girl in her desi demeanour talks of her traditional views. In the beginning, there's a conflict but then it gradually takes a backfoot when both fall in love. After all, opposite poles do attract at some point or the other.

Apart from TV, you've done a few stage shows. So you aren't really a newcomer.
Well, I had worked with the ACME (A Common Man's Entertainment) troupe as an amateur artiste. And we did showcase some plays on issue-based, social themes that got rave reviews from all quarters. For instance, we performed Ramlila soon after the Godhra carnage and based the production on Hindu-Muslim riots. Besides, Surya Ke Pehli Se Surya Ke Antim Kiran, adapted from Surendra Sharma's Hindi novel, was also critically acclaimed.

As for films, my debut film Anjaan has just hit the theatres. A Hansal Mehta romantic thriller, the film's been produced by Anil Vohra. Others in the cast are Mehek (of Nayi Padosan fame) and Aamir Ali (of Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai).

Prankster's day out!

April Fool's Day is around the corner! We quizzed some television actors and found out how much of a prankster they are !

Riya V Anandwala finds out!

Priya Wal- "No one can fool Arshi!"

Well, it's really difficult to recall of the pranks I have played, as there are many. I remember this particular April Fool's day, when I was in Delhi. I had red ink with me, which I had put on the lower portion of my face, near my chin. My mom was in her bedroom, and laid myself outside her room. As soon as she opened the door, she was half dead. So it was quite a prank. No one ever fooled me, you see, no one can fool Arshi!

Amit Khanna- "The after effects were bad!"

Well, I love playing pranks. I played one on my mom. I bought a bouquet and a saree and sent it to my residence address by courier, with a chit attached to it which read, "I am in love with you and will call, and you have to meet me." My mother was very scared, and was cursing that guy to the core. This went on for four to five hours and then I broke it. The after effects were bad. I remember this incident where my cousin brother called me and said," Amitji, I am calling from Subhash Ghai's production house, we have short listed you as our protagonist, for Mukta Art's next project. The film's name is After the Rape, and we have made films like, Telephone Bhoot, Ganga mein Nanga." Then obviously I got to know that its my brother. But it was just too much.

Rupali Ganguly- " I was wanting to commit a suicide"

I have always played low category pranks. But yes I have been fooled many a times. Once, on the first of April I received a letter saying that you have won the best actress award for your Bengali film; I disbelieved it, as I couldn't ever win such a prestigious award. But then when I got my air tickets a little later than that day, I got to know that I was seriously being called. There was another time, I was in my tenth grade, and my childhood friend, considered a smart dude told me that, "I have got to know about our results, and you have failed in history. "I got too scared and was even planning to commit a suicide, though I don't have the damn guts to do it. He told me this on 30 of March and at night, at 12.00 am, he told me that he was fooling me. Oh what a prank that was.

Tina Parakh- "I cannot tell you how embarrassing it was"

Well, I remember this one incident, which took place long back. I was sitting at my place, a friend of mine called me from down, and said get dressed we are going out. I was a little surprised, as this never usually happens with me. I got totally dressed and went down. I thought there was something fishy going on and as soon as I went down, there was no one at all. Later, I came up to my place and saw that all my friends were upstairs and said, "Happy April Fool's Day". I cannot tell you how embarrassing it was.

Vipul Gupta- "A prankster is always alert!"

On the sets of India Calling, I was sitting with all my co actors and the lights were switched off. It had been six hours and I was thoroughly bored. I called my makeup man and put a white blanket on him and made him hold a candle. He entered the room, and as the lights were off, everyone started shouting, ohh-aah! It was just too good. As far as me being fooled is concerned, I guess never, or may those small ones. What happens is, once you yourself are a big prankster, it is really difficult for anyone to play a prank on you, as you are always alert!

Star's Heartbeat begins 1 May

The viewers of Star One are in for a treat. Come 1 May, they are set to watch a quiz show of a different kind! Heartbeat, produced by Sidhartha Basu's Synergy Communications will air Monday - Thursday at 9:30 pm.

There were speculations in the media that the desi version would be called Heart Attack, but it seems that the makers have decided to stick to the original title. The introduction of the new show will see a fair amount of changes in the current lineup of the channel.

Starting 1 May, Yeh Dil Chahe More will be telecast at 8:30 pm, followed by India Calling at 9:00 with Heartbeat coming in at 9:30 pm. From 17 April, this new schedule will be in place; only at 9:30 pm, the channel will showcase the best of Nach Baliye for two weeks, till Heartbeat takes over.

India Calling: change in time slot!

The Star One quiz show will have to compete with Zee's Saat Phere, Star Plus' Kavyanjali and Sony's new show, Thodi Khushi Thode Ghum

Heartbeat is a one of it's kind show - this is the first time in the country that the outcome of a quiz show will be decided on the pulse rate of the contestants and also there will be no quizmaster to monitor the proceedings, instead there will be a voice that will throw the questions at the contestants. The contestant is going to be confined in a box while he answers the questions thrown at him. They will have all access to the Internet, mobile phones and land lines and the trick is in answering the posers as calmly as possible, as the points will be given on the basis of the most stable pulse rate.

Star India had bought this quiz format from Endemol last year.

Manasi engaged to Parthiv 'uncle'
By: Shaheen Parkar
June 14, 2005

MULTI-TALENTED: Manasi Parekh
Actress-singer Manasi Parekh played the yellow-haired Jo in Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi (MTV) and Tania in Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai (Sony). A singer, acting happened after she took part in the MTV talent hunt for Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi.

"I thought as it was for MTV there will be lots of singing to do but I found myself acting instead," she says. Her fianc Parthiv Gohil is also a singer. "Music is what brought us together," say the couple as they talk about their relationship...

The first meeting

Manasi:
It was at the Sa Re Ga Ma show on Zee's Alpha Gujarati channel in 2000. Parthiv was the anchor and I was a participant. I made it to the semi-finals. I referred to him as Parthiv uncle! At that time I was in school so anyone older to me was an uncle.

SPECIAL DAY: Parthiv Gohil and Manasi Parekh at their engagement ceremony
Parthiv: I later told her I am not all that old; just a few years older to you so you need not call me uncle.

About six months later…

Manasi:
After the show, we never met. Then out of the blue, six months later I received a call from him. He had managed to get my number.

He was performing at a show and wondered if I could sing. As it was during my exams, I said no.

Parthiv: I thought of her as she was extremely enthusiastic about singing.

Music concerts served as the meeting ground…

Manasi:
It was not a case of love at first sight. I guess it grew dheere dheere. Both of us kept bumping into each other often at music shows and we would discuss music.

Parthiv: It was only music that made our conversation but somewhere down the line it all happened gradually.

Popping the question…

Manasi:
It was me who made the first move and popped the question. Parthiv was completely taken aback. He was shocked. Here I was telling him he was the man. He thought I was a nave, young girl who had been smitten by him. But I told him he was the man for me.

Parthiv: Yes, I was taken by surprise when Manasi told me. I told her she was young but she said, "What is the point of waiting when we have made up our minds."

The family welcomed it…

Manasi:
When I took him to meet my family, they were open to the idea. Moreover, Parthiv and I come from a common Gujarati background. They didn't mind that I wanted to act.

Parthiv: I am from Bhavnagar and Manasi's grandmother's side is also there. So there was a lot of common elements.

The engagement was a small affair…

Manasi:
We got engaged in February this year and it was a family affair. As it was just prior to the exams most of my friends could not make it and my co-stars from Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi were busy shooting! I was the yellow-haired bride as I was still shooting for the show then.

Parthiv: I had my family down from Bhavnagar and it was a close-knit affair.

Marriage is in the distant future...

Manasi:
We have not yet sat down and decided about when we will get married. I know I will, but there is no plan at the moment. I have yet to establish myself as a singer and actress. I have just completed my graduation from St Xavier's College.

Parthiv: At the moment we are concentrating on our professional lives.

That remarkable quality…

Manasi:
What I like most about Parthiv is that even though he came from a small town Bhavnagar, he nursed his dream to make a mark in the music world in Mumbai.

Parthiv: Manasi is far mature for her age. She reads my mind and she understands me totally.

shaheen@mid-day.com

The gifts

At the engagement, Parthiv gave Manasi a 16-diamond ring made in white gold, silver payals (her favourite gift), traditional saris, jewellery. "I keep on buying gifts for her every now and then," he says.

Manasi gave him a diamond ring which "he wears on special occasions as he does not want it to spoil it", besides the usual clothes, etc "and lots of love."

Who is Parthiv Gohil?

1. Was a contestant in Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee's Alpha Gujarati channel in 1997 in which he bagged the first prize. Later anchored the show.

2. Sang a Punjabi number in Sapnay, an album by music director Vishal Bhardwaj for Zee Music. Has sung in Shangar, a compilation of Gujarati light songs by Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas has him in the title song as well as in back vocals.

3. His band Aakruti takes roots in the Indian cultural folk forms. Launched a a novel musical extravaganza called Dosti, about the friendship between songs of two languages which are of same essence.

'India Calling' Priyanka Chopra!

By Sameer Wadekar, Bollywood Trade News Network

It's become a normal practice for movie stars to make glimpsy appearances on television. May be for the fact that television is fast booming up and with the cropping up of so many satellite channels the avenues have just expanded.

Shahrukh started his career on television with acclaimed serials like FAUJI and CIRCUS. Then there are today's foremost actors like Aditya Srivastava, K K Menon, Ashutosh Rana, Manoj Vajpayee and Irrfan Khan to name a few. And yes Vidya 'Parineeta' Balan whose attempts at greasepaint were with Ekta Kapoor's popular comedy HUM PAANCH and Ashok Pandit's HANSTE KHELTE. These are people who graduated from being a TV star to a film star.

But for the already established movie stars, television was an avoidable matter that is until Amitabh Bachchan's KBC made an astounding impact overall. Prior to that television was considered by many a refuge for failed film stars. But KBC changed all that and we saw a horde of movie stars like Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Kader Khan doing television as and when they got interesting offers. Very recently we have seen Bollywood luminaries like Farah Khan, Anu Malik, Madhavan, Manisha Koirala and even Hero No 1 Govinda hosting various prime time shows.

And now if the speculations are to be believed the lovely Priyanka Chopra will make a stand-in in the trendy tele-serial INDIA CALLING. The serial is produced by Rose Audio- Visuals and is aired on Star One. Priyanka has reportedly shot for her episodes on April 8, 9 and 10.

It's common for Hollywood actors to flash up on television sitcoms and it's good in a way that Bollywood stars are also taking the same stride. It could be for whatever reasons but one thing is for sure that Indian television is acquiring its share of glamour in the process, something which it was devoid of for a long time now!
