Nigaar quits India Calling

Khan leaves the show due to truncated role

Sapana Patil

As Kirti Gaekwad sets foot in Star One's new offering India Calling, Nigaar Khan prepares to leave the same. When asked about the reason for her exit, she first says, " Actually, I am acting in Ek Ladki Anjaani Si too and both are aired on the same time slot, so it was too much work for me."

Nigaar Khan

After a little coaxing, she spills the beans, "Actually the channel changed the story line, with the focus shifting to other characters. That left no scope for my character to grow. Shrishti (Arya, the producer) is a close friend, so she let me go. "

On being asked if the channel stopped her character from developing, she says, "I don't blame the channel, it happens in all serials." She makes it clear that she will not return to the serial.

Meanwhile, producer Shrishti Arya says, "Now the focus is on Chandni and her sister. Given the persona of Nigaar, it is not justified to make her sit around. Hence, Nigaar's character is on a sabbatical now. Her character is popular. I feel she should make a comeback." When contacted, Star's senior creative director Shailja Kejriwal refused to comment.

Here are a few STAR celebs who tell us what Valentine's Day means to them and how they celebrate it!

"Every moment I spend with my loved ones is a special moment. I just enjoy myself and I hope to spend the Valentine's Day with my loved ones!"

"I wish to celebrate Valentine's Day with my family and friends, what better way than this to celebrate it with them?"

"We will be doing the most unexpected thing on Valentine's Day this year! I will be traveling to Jalgoen that day and Sachin is busy shooting in Bangalore for his Kannada movie that he is directig. But he will be flying over to Mumbai for a day and we will celebrate it. Although he is older to me by a few years, he is very young at heart and more romantic than me! I am glad that it is that way. I enjoy being pampered by him!"

"We would spend the day together. we will perhaps go on a long drive to Pune. Mahabaleshwar is a place that we visit. This will be our second Valentine's Day together and I just want to say beleive in love."

Valentine's Day generally does not mean a man and a woman being in love. It also includes your loved ones. I don't have a man in my life right now, but if there was one, I would want to dress up for him and want him to take me out for dinner! I will be celebrating this year's Valentine's Day with the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai gang as they will be gifting me!

Poonam: I always wait for Manish's surprise! I am eagerly awaiting this year too! This will be our third Valentine's Day together!
Manish: "I take a day out to spend it with Poonam. Since it's a surprise, I will not disclose anything! For me, Valentine's Day is everyday. But the day will be special as I will celebrate it with my wife and child together!"

"I have been shooting on Valentine's Day for the past two years. If I get a person who loves me, I will be spending the time with her in Murud. It's a peaceful beach and that remains a dream as I will be working on the day this year too!

"We both feel that Valentine's Day can be celebrated every day! After 10 years of marriage, we have reached a maturity level. While we were in college, we used to give gifts, cards and flowers. This year, we will be doing a show on Valentine's Day and we will be together!

"Every day is a Valentine's Day for us. This time, I wont be celebratinbg it as Neeru is busy shooting in Punjab!"

What's your backup plan?

Surviving in this industry is not always certain. Some stick on for long, while others fail to prove themselves. So do these telly actors have another backup ready for them? Or are they in Mumbai with just acting on their mind?

Riya V Anandwala talks to a few non Mumbai actors and asks them about their backup plans?

Amit Sadh

Amit Sadh

I just have acting with me. I don't have anything by my side. And fortunately God has been very kind and gracious to me. Acting is my only backup. I was never pessimistic when I came to Mumbai with absolutely nothing in my hand, and spent two years on the footpath! I have no financial backup, there is no one supporting behind me. Yes, emotionally, I have people around me. It fluctuates from person to person, and this is about me!

Iqbal Khan

Iqbal Khan

Aah! I have never ever thought of an alternative career. And that's because I am confident about myself. But on a real note, if that ever happens, I can do any sort of physical labour. I don't have a great education backing me, no MBA degree, no engineering degree; I haven't even completed my graduation. In life, these degrees are not everything; there is no guarantee of getting everything with your educational qualification. What matters today is experience!

Priyanka Bassi

Priyanka Bassi

I have no other backup other than acting as of now. I just shifted my base from Delhi to Mumbai. If something goes wrong, I will have to plan accordingly. I have his gut feeling; I am here to make it big so I have never given it a thought. I think I will join the creative side of this industry but nothing apart from this industry. Education is certainly very important, but this is all about passion. I definitely have a financial backup, as my family is very supportive.

Amit Tandon

Amit Tandon

Well, if not acting, it unquestionably has to be singing. I have received many accolades for my singing, and perhaps that can be my backup. It is not always that this line is not certain, it's just very competitive, and once if you make a position here, nothing can go wrong. I have seen many who don't deserve what they have, while only a few are worthy of what they have. I feel being intelligent in this industry is very very important. Education undoubtedly is significant, but after being on screen one cannot do a nine to five job, you see. Technically I do have a financial backup from my parents who are based in the U.S.A, but I don't want them to think that I failed for what I was here. I am saving too, and making my own financial backup.

Gurdeep Kohli

Gurdeep Kohli

Oh! I was working in an ad agency prior to this and also I had a career in painting. I had 22 students under me who were learning painting. I was working with Lintas in the creative department. Education was the criteria of my acting career. My mother had warned me that if I don't finish my education, I would not be allowed to step in this industry. I had to turn down two to three lucrative modeling assignments as I was appearing for my exams. I have a financial backup from whatever I have worked on. So I have never relied on acting per say!

Vipul Gupta

Vipul Gupta

I am an MBA! Prior to this I was working in a MNC called G capital in the financial division. So if nothing works out for me in this line at any point of time, I have my master's degree to fall on!

Priya Wal, Shweta Gulati, Shrishti Arya Behl, Mansi Parekh and Kirti Kelkar

One doesn't usually see Shrishti Arya Behl at parties or on the social circuit.

Ask her to pose for pictures and she makes excuses to get away from a chance at being photographed.

But she pleasantly surprised us at a recently held award function where she made an appearance on stage in a ravishing outfit with her leading ladies from Remix and India Calling.

Not only did she look radically different from her usual look, but also seemed to be glowing in the success of India Calling, with Kirti Kelkar being the new entrant in the Rose Audio Visual parivar

Kanica Maheshwari bags Virasat
Vamps on telly beware, Kanica Maheshwari is fast establishing her credentials as the next mean thing on the small screen. Kanica, who got her acting break with Kabhi Aaye Na Judai on Star Plus, however courted audience attention only with Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, as Neil, the evil sister of Sasha (Chetan Hansraj). Her next big role with negative shades had her play Mantra, the twin sister of Mahaan (Sandeep Bhasali) in Piya Ka Ghar on Zee TV.

Currently playing Amy in India Calling, she has bagged a strong character with grey shades in B.R. Chopra's forth coming magnum opus on Star Plus titled Virasat. The series, which will go on air from March has Kanica play Juhi, a spoiled brat from a super rich family.

Himani Bhatt Shivpuri

Himani Bhatt Shivpuri was born and brought up in Dehradun. She did her schooling from Dehradun as her father Shri Haridutt Bhatt was a teacher of Hindi subject.

Himani Shivpuri hails from Bhatwani village (Previously known as Chamoli) is a graduate in Science, because of her main interest in acting she took admission in the National Acting Institute in Delhi. Himani Shivpuri from the stage actress in Delhi achieved her desire of acting in Hindi films. Himani Shivpuri is seen in almost all the films of most famous productions house like "Rajshri's Production" are one of the few names. She works for movies more than Televisions serials.

The recently taken interview of Hemani Shivpuri at her residence at Jogeshwari (East) by Sunil Kukreti sounds interesting….

How do you consider your attachment with Uttaranchal?
I was born in Uttaranchal and have spent my whole childhood and teenage at this beautiful place. My family is based there. My father stays in Mysore and brother is working in ONGC at Dehradun. So I am attached to Uttaranchal like a person is attached to their home. Uttranchal is my home.

How are your memories about Bhatwadi Village?
I have been to this place many times during my childhood. During summer vacations I used to get opportunity to visit this place. I still remember I loved doing grass thrashing over there, like the other women's and girls did. I used to also steal jaggary and sugar from the sack and eat them. It was real fun . There are still many more such memories and mischief's I did at that time are still fresh in my mind. I really miss those memories.

How do you describe the people of Uttaranchal?
They are good! They are a bit lazy! In fact by coming to Mumbai we have not done anything for Uttaranchal. We work with great dedication, honesty and respect. Our state (Uttaranchal) has been poor. Now we can only make it prosperous. Yes, the "Garhwali" and " Kumauni" attitude has to be destroyed completely. If they continue to fight amongst themselves then it's difficult to decide the future of Uttaranchal.

What to you see the most in terms of beauty in Uttaranchal?
I have been to many places abroad like Switzerland, New Zealand etc for my film shots, but I believe the magnificent beauty of Uttaranchal cannot be found anywhere.

Which place would you like to go in Uttaranchal?
Dehradun and Mussoorie are the world's two most beautiful places according to me. The rivers, forests, mountains… I find them beautiful. Even here in Mumbai I have taken a house, which is near the mountains and has a good views.

What are your views about the New State Uttaranchal?
I was happy when it was declared as a separate State hoping many things would happen. The roads were broadened etc., nothing much happened after that. In fact I think about it sitting away from the place, it doesn't help either. I have strong hopes for the development of Uttaranchal.

If you get an opportunity would you be interested to be in the politics and become one of the ministers of Uttranchal?
I have many dreams that I will do something in my field and for my state, but destiny brought me to Mumbai from Delhi. The dreams are still incomplete, Lets see if I get an opportunity I shall do something for my state.

What are your dreams?
I want to do something for my country and the people staying in Uttaranchal. I want to uplift the culture of Uttaranchal. I really want to help them in any way I can.

What do you think would you be able to fulfill your dream by being a star? Would you be able to develop Uttaranchal by staying in this profession?

Yes! I will fulfill my dream by being in this profession, I don't think by changing my profession will help me anyway or the people of Uttaranchal. When I was in Delhi I was aware about the happenings in Uttaranchal that time I had also written about "Chipko movement".

Your father Mr. Haridas Bhatt has a good name in literature field, how does he convenience you will adapt to Uttaranchal's customs, traditions and culture?
Yes my father has written many stories on it. He also has knowledge on the national song and music of Uttaranchal. He also wanted us to do the same and be more famous then what he is today. we also learnt "Phadi" music and dance.

Do you remember any song of Uttaranchal?
Yes! I do remember many songs. In NSD we learnt many national songs of Uttaranchal and also music from the teacher. My father was a teacher of Hindi so he only use to teach language lessons in both the schools. I remember many songs like "Bedu Pako Baro masa, and many more such beautiful songs.

Do you know your mother tongue?
Yes I can speak a little but not very fluently.

Have you seen any Uttaranchali film?
Yes I had seen some two-three years back. It was not like bollywood movies, not very good. I didn't like it much.

Do you think the film was not good because they don't have much finance to make it more attractive?
Yes! This is one of the reasons. But money is not everything. If your intentions are good and ambitions are strong then anyhow you will do your best. When Satyajit Ray had made "Pather Panchali" at that time he also didn't have money. But his intentions were good so the film had done well at box office.

If you get a chance to work in any Uttaranchali film will you work in it?
Yes I will be very happy to do it.

How you can help the Utttaranchali film in terms of finance money?
Yes! I will surely help, I had also done once but film did not materialize. It is obvious I am an Artist I should surely help. And after all I am Uttaranchali, I want Uttaranchali Theater to prosper in the same way like Bengali theater.

Kanica with one of the stall owners

Kanica Maheshwari is bowled over by Bombay Duck

metro takes the India Calling actress to sample the fare at Versova Village's Koli Food Festival. By Divya Verma

While Juhu was hosting a grand food festival as part of Juhu Hamara, the Kolis from Versova Village were busy readying their own treat. A Koli Food Festival was held from Jan 20-22 at Versova Village and the seafood was a huge hit with visitors from across the city.

I accompanied actress and resident of Lokhandwala Kanica Maheshwari to sample the fare at the Koli food festival. As we reached the venue, a strong smell of fish greeted, leaving both Kanica and me wondering how we would actually eat anything. But one look at the place and we forgot the stink.

The residents of Versova Village set up around 15 stalls selling a variety of seafood. These stalls were named after the associations and bylanes in the village.

The first stall was the Agnidevta Mahila Mandal. Kanica tried the Rawas Gravy (Rs 40) with Rice Roti (Rs 10 each) at this stall. She says, "I really love the roti. It's light and tasty. Though the gravy is a little oily, I like the taste."

Kanica couldn't resist trying the Bombay Duck (Rs 25 each) at the stall. "This is the first time I am trying Bombay Duck and nothing else has ever tasted better," she says.

Our next stop is Buddha Gali Mahila Mandal, where Kanica tries the Koli speciality Pomfret Curry (Rs 50). She says, "The curry is delicious with a strong flavor of kokum. It's spicy and the fish tastes exactly the way it should. It's one of the best pomfret curries I have had in a long time."

After we check out the items available at Tereker Tarun Mandal, Kanica picks Bombay Duck for the second time. "It's so tasty; I can't resist," she smiles. We try the Bombil Bhaji (Rs 15) and Kanica says she's made the right choice. She says, "I can keep on eating the fish cutlets. I sure have developed a taste for Bombay Duck."

After we tried enough to last us for the next six hours, Kanica and I decided to stroll around the place. As we went from stall to stall we found that everywhere the food was presented well. "It's not the taste of food that makes it palatable, it's the look of it that makes it more appealing," says Kanica.

As we started checking out every stall, we found it increasingly difficult to make a choice. After a lot of deliberation, Kanica finally decided to try out Prawn Pasta (Rs 40) from Sagari Kinara stall. She says, "This is such an interesting dish! However, I think the quantity was a little less."

By now both Kanica and I are too full. However, we cannot resist the temptation of trying out the prawn biryani (Rs 30) at the Patil Gali Mahila Mandal stall. In between spoonfuls of biryani, Kanica says, "The biryani's good but it doesn't taste too different from the regular chicken biryani. I would have liked it more if it was a little spicier."

After we finished the biryani, there was no question of hanging around in that place as we knew we might be tempted to try something more in spite of being too full. "The food was just great. I never thought I would eat so much fish in one day," concludes Kanica.

Shristi Arya to open Twinkle Beauty Parlour

And this one also allows men in. After all, it's not a brick-and- mortar salon we're referring to, but a television show

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Producer Shristi Arya of Rose films, famous for coming up with the most unique concepts for her television shows, is ready with yet another creation. The name of the show – Twinkle Beauty Parlour – somewhat reveals the setting, and to an extent, even the plot.
"I'm glad that people don't consider my shows run-of-the-mill," says Shristi. Probe her about her latest in the pipeline, but she won't reveal too much.

However, word has it that the show is based on weird goings-on that take place in smalltime beauty parlours. "I will neither confirm nor deny it. Yes, I've approached the channel and in a joint meeting with them we've decided to launch this in a big way. Giving out information would mean going against them and I certainly do not want to do that."

The show, that is being made for Sony Television, is still in the process of receiving its final touches by the creative team. The cast and other details about Twinkle Beauty Parlour have been kept under wraps as the team wants to announce the show with a grand launch. "I've been talking to a few actors but haven't signed any name on the dotted line yet," informs Arya.

Word has it that many female stars are being considered for the big show. We spoke to actress Narayani Shastri who is perhaps the only confirmed actor. "In all probabilities I might be acting in Twinkle Beauty Parlour," reveals the dusky actress. "But, I'm not too sure if Shristi wants me to talk about the show," she says reluctantly. Post Piya Ka Ghar Narayani only wants to work with the best production house and in a show that has a social message. "Apart from Twinkle Beauty Parlour, I might be working on a show for a new production house. I play the role of a cop and Rohit Roy plays my love interest. But for more details you'll have to give both these shows some more time," says the excited Shastri.
