Nagiin's prank on Aastha

Sayantani Ghosh, who is the lead in Nagiin, played a prank on Aastha of Baabul Ka Aangan Chhoote Na for the show Champion Chaalbaaz No.1.

About the prank, Sayantani says, "I was supposed to go on Aastha's sets and tell her that I have received a call from her production house saying they are not happy with her work so I am going to replace her since this is a very big show. Before me, a production guy was going break this news to her so I called her and told her that."

Sayantani then entered Aastha's sets and on the microphone she was being instructed what to say. "I did that and after listening to me she kept on crying. It is her first show which has not yet come on air so she was scared. If it would have happened with any known face it would have been a different thing but since she is new she could not bear it," says Sayantani.

Even after revealing that it was a prank, Aastha could not believe it and just could not stop herself from crying. "I also felt bad for her and apologized. After that she was hiding her face from the camera. In fact, I requested the production house many times to stop the prank but they carried on for a while longer. However, in the end, she was happy to hear that she was not removed from the show."

The whole prank took place in the make up van so no one was there except Sayantani and Aastha. "I can completely understand her situation. She is very nice and did not say anything to me. I would not like to play such a prank again on anyone. In this case I had to do it. May be if the prank was played on me even I would have reacted similarly," comments the actress.

The episode featuring this prank is coming on air Saturday, 10 pm. Before Sayantani, Narayani and Usha Utthap had also played pranks for this show.

Varun, back on track
22 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,NIKHILA PANT ,TNN

Singing runs in Varun Badola's family. And that's the reason Varun believes he was facing not his competitors but his own lineage. A finalist on Jjhoom India, a music reality show on SaharaOne, Badola is a free bird now.

He quips, "Now that the mounting tension has come to an end, life is back on normal track. This being my second reality show on TV, I must say I have developed a liking for them."

So what was easier – matching steps with wife Rajeshwari on Nach Baliye or displaying his vocal capabilities? "Singing was definitely easier for me. I am really bad at dancing, it's just the practice that got me going on the show. But singing is in my blood, although I may not be very good at it." Was Raj of any help in his preparations for the show? "Not really, but since I believed that she was my lucky charm, I sometimes took her to my rehearsals."

Varun's greatest critic remains his father. He maintains that his father, VM Badola, just said, 'I am not expecting you to be good on the show. Considering your background in the field of music, you should excel.' Varun adds, "He is not one of those who would constantly comment or compliment me. He told me that he would speak the day he would find something wrong with my performances. Though he didn't say much, I know that in the beginning, he was disappointed, to say the least. Sachin is a fine actor and has proved that he is a fine singer as well. I enjoyed the show a lot and am certainly happy that I took it up. I am most touched by the enthusiasm that Aakriti Kakkar showed. I could see my younger self in her. I am sure she will go a long way," says Varun.

Having proven his talent, is he now planning to do more films? "Well, I would love to, but I am not being offered any. As of now I am quite satisfied with the way my work is going." Currently a part of Aek Chabi Hai Pados Mein , Varun describes his best experiences thus, "The first half of Koshish – Ek Aasha , the second half of Astitva – Ek Prem Kahani and the present run of Aek Chabhi Hai ... have been creatively most satisfying for me."

Sayantani's injury woes continue

Naginn's lead Sayantani Ghosh aka Amrita has injured herself once again during the serial's shoot for a special episode which will be telecast this week. She hurt her leg while dancing. Just some time back she had injured herself in Goa too.

The Bong actress, who danced on the Sholay number Jab Tak Hai Jaan..., reveals, "There were little plastic pieces on the floor to give it the appearance of glass but while dancing I cut my feet. That's when I realized that there were some actual glass pieces scattered with the plastic ones. I was in extreme pain as blood was oozing out and I even fell unconscious for while. But I was given first aid after 20 min I was ready for shoot again."

Sayantani's woes were far from over though. She adds, "As it was a fight sequence there was a fire as well. I was wearing an Amrapali costume which is prone to catching fire. While shooting the wind was in the direction where I was standing and this again created a problem."

The shoot had to be called off on that day. "My condition was not so good so only close-up shots were taken. Then we shot the whole sequence the next day. I'm really looking forward to that particular episode to come on air," she concludes.

Well, Sayantani no pain no gain. Anyways, we hope the audience appreciates your performance.

Ankur Nayyar of Left Right Left is all set to play the role of Sanmaan in Sahara one's Ghar Ek Sapna. Earlier played by Ujjwal Rana, Ankur has no qualms taking over. But is he prepared for it? "I was intimated about the change a month ago so I've been following the show since then. Now that I know the flow of the show and the character I am to play it will be a lot simpler to take over," says Ankur. But what about this other show then? "Ghar ek Sapna has different angles and sub plots so the work I have to put in will be lesser there. And of course the production team have been very accommodative about it," says Ankur, adding, "I'm not keen on taking up any more offers. I'd like to do justice to the shows I'm already dedicated to."

Ankur Nayar must be the only actor who finds cameos far more exciting than lead roles that go on for years. He has done both family dramas and action-adventure shows. But his personal favourites are the latter. "the problem with family dramas is that they go on endlessly whereas action. I am keen on doing anything that excites me. But I find it difficult to carry on with one role for a long time," he says. He also doesn't mind stepping into someone's shoes as a replacement as long as the role is meaty. "Replacements are the 'in' thing today. It doesn't bother me whether the character is negative or positive as long I get to play a good role. In any case, these days it's difficult to have a long vision about any role because TRPs determine the colour of the character," he says.

He was enjoying his innings as Captain Randhawa in Left Right Left. But with the show going for a new set of characters in its third season, Ankur is back to doing a daily family drama. "Well, I started my career with Kasauti and in the last seven years have done quite a few family dramas. But I have had a great time working in Kohinoor and Left Right Left because action and adventure shows are more exciting," he says.

So how does he find his role in Ghar Ek Sapna where he has replaced Ujwal Rana in the lead role? "The channel and producer were keen that I do the role after Ujwal decided to quit. Since I enjoy a certain comfort level with the channel I agreed," he says.

Interview
His sapna, a music album

Tribune photograph
Darshan Dave has bagged the Indian Television Academy Award-2007 for his powerful performance in Sahara One's Ghar Ek Sapna. This was his 3rd nomination last year. He shares with Lifestyle his take on his character, his association with the entertainment industry and his interests in life. Your role in Ghar Ek Sapna... I play Sujeet, the son-in-law of Om Shankar, a powerful political figure from Bihar. He is tough and used to get things done at the gunpoint. But he is a romantic too, especially with his wife and has tremendous respect and loyalty towards his father-in-law. How did you get this role? Ajai Sinha, whom I have known for a long time, offered me the role. I turned him down initially because I knew it was not a central role. But he was persistent and convinced me that only I could play this character well. Tell us about your background... I am from Jaipur. My family is completely into music. I have written and composed songs and played the synthesizer. With a dream to become an actor, I came to Mumbai and did a course in film direction. I assisted Siddharth Kak for Surabhi. I also worked as a music director, lyricist and singer for few shows like Justuju and Rishtey. I now plan to compose for my music album. Share some of your memorable moments on the sets of Ghar Ek... Oh yes! I am a Gujarati. And just before the shooting commenced Ajai told me that I would have to speak Bhojpuri. He gave me only a few seconds and I had to decide if I wanted to go ahead with the show or not. I said OK. I was nervous, didn't want to make a fool of myself. But thanks to Vineet Kumar, my father-in-law in the show, who speaks only with a Bihari accent, I perfected the language in no time! I even received compliments for my flawless accent. Now, Vineet and I speak only Bhojpuri. You also have done some ads? Yes. I have done Revital capsules, Kinetic Honda, Vardhaman, Maruti, ICICI, Mahindra and Mahindra, Nutralite and IDBI advertisements. What are your other interests? When I am not working, I love to compose songs. I enjoy experimenting with new musical instruments and musical software. What are the projects you are working on?

I have just completed Anand Rai's comedy Kuch Khel Kuch Masti in which I play one of the lead characters. — Dharam Pal

src="/hitCount.php?storyId=302415"> The most beautiful and complex of relationships is dealt with in the most hackneyed manner on television Although gender equality is politically correct, the term seems to have taken a backseat as far as Hindi soaps go. Channels are seemingly showing a fascination for serials having daughters playing pivotal roles in them. The latest to hit us is Hamari Betiyoon Ka Vivaah on Zee TV that revolves around a mother's anxiety about finding a suitable match for her four daughters. There are others. In February, NDTV Imagine launched their soap, Radhaa Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi, revolving around a mother and her three daughters. The spotlight on daughters is also in Zee's ongoing soap, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan and was in Star One's erstwhile soap Betiyaan Apni Yaa…Paraaya Dhan. "The target audience that we cater to consists mostly of women, hence the women-oriented shows or shows that have mothers and daughters," says Pearl Shahi, creative head of Zee TV. According to Shahi, more daughters mean more emotions and also offer more variety to the tracks. She also adds that these soaps also get good TRPs. Producer-director of Sahara One's soap Ghar…Ek Sapnaa, Ajai Sinha, who has been in the profession for over a decade, explains, "If we have more daughters or women characters in our soap, our viewers who are mostly women find it easier to relate to the stories." If given an option to make a soap what would Sinha prefer —one with three daughters or another with three sons? "If I have to survive I'd go for the soap with daughters. And if I'm still asked to make shows on sons, I'd in bring their wives or girlfriends for variety," he says. However not everyone agrees to the 'women viewers'. Vatsala Patel, associate creative director (fiction development) in a production house says, "It seems that channels and at times production houses have a flawed idea about Indian women. The Indian woman is not a 40-year-old brainless person. In fact, often intelligent ideas are turned down by clients, who claim that the target audience won't understand." But she agrees that more women characters mean more options in track. "If a channel wants to run a soap for at least two years and that too five-days-a-week, one needs big families in it so that they can divert to side tracks. It is here that one needs women characters. More women characters mean more melodrama, more bickering and more politics," says Patel.

But, Shailja Kejriwal, EVP, content of NDTV Imagine, says that more than characters, it's the story that matters. "Somebody would be somebody's daughter," she says adding, "Our target group is entire family. People often think that if you cast women the show targets women. But I don't think so." She maintains that Radhaa is sans melodrama and the feedback that they have received so far is positive
