Om's back
By: Vickey Lalwani
August 20, 2007

PARVATI KAHAN HO TUM? Kiran Karmarkar
Ekta Kapoor has a penchant for bringing back the dead in her shows. The latest to return is Kiran Karmarkar, who will reprise his role as Om Agarwal in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus) after two years.

Says an insider, "It's a two- way situation. We wanted Kiran back in the show and he too needed the work. You can't have Parvati (Sakshi Tanwar) carrying all the scenes. Even Tulsi needs Mihir in Kyunki."

Good explanation

It is learnt that Kiran too is keen to return after exploring life outside Balaji. "When he left, he said he was stagnating. Now that he's been eliminated from Sony's Comedy Circus, he's realised that there's nothing better than Kahaani for him," adds the source, "though he has been pursuing theatre."

Kiran was spotted at Balaji House (Andheri) on Thursday (presumably to meet Kapoor), followed by another meeting with the show's writers on Saturday. The writers have been told to come up with a very solid explanation for Om's return in Kahaanii.

Since leaving Kahaani, Kiran has done Smriti Iraani's Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aaasmaan and Ajai Sinha's Ghar Ek Sapna. On the big screen, Kiran has done brief roles in Deepak Balraj's Sai Baba, Esmayeel Shroff's Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum Badle and Meghna Gulzar's Just Married.

It seems director Vipul Shah tried to help Kiran by referring his name to several filmmakers in Bollywood. However, most of them already had films in production and asked him to wait out the year before approaching them again.

When asked about his return to Kahaani, Kiran is shocked that we know about his meetings with Balaji. He says, "This is news to me. I wouldn't like to say anything on this please."

However, his wife Rinku (who played Chaya in Kahaani), admits that she went to Balaji House on Thursday. "But I went to Balaji to meet a friend," she laughs.

Peeping Tom on Kahaani sets!

hitlist@mid-day.com

A production hand was caught peeping into the changing room of one of the actresses (name withheld) on Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

The incident took place on Saturday at a studio in Saki Naka. Says a source, "It's shocking. This guy was trying to peep at her actress from the air-conditioner duct.

She sensed something was wrong and immediately went into the other room and caught the guy red-handed."

Shooting then came to a standstill when the shaken actress ran sobbing to the production controller.

When Ekta Kapoor heard about the incident, she was livid. Says the source, "No one at Balaji is allowed to misbehave with a woman. The Peeping Tom was immediately handed over to the police and he's now cooling his heels in jail."

Karan Grover Gets Lucky In Love
[2 Aug 2007]

"KAVITA (KAUSHIK) IS ONE OF THE MOST LOVING, UNDERSTANDING AND ENTERPRISING WOMEN I'VE MET"

"SHOWTIME IS PERHAPS THE ONLY MAGAZINE, WHICH COVERS ME," SAYS KARAN GROVER, IN A ATTEMPT TO BE MODEST. THOUGH I'M NOT SURE I AGREE WITH THE EXTREMITY OF THAT STATEMENT, I HAVE TO CONCUR THAT ALTHOUGH HE'S BEEN A PART OF THE TELEVISION SCENE FOR AROUND FIVE YEARS, KARAN DOES NOT ENJOY THE SAME KIND OF MEDIA ATTENTION THAT A LOT OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES DO. THIS, IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT HE WAS THE LEAD IN ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY WATCHED NON-BALAJI SOAPS, SAARRTHI.

Not that Karan minds too much. He's here to do his job, and he's very happy about that. Media coverage et all is just about secondary. We caught up with the talented, young actor to find out about his beginnings, his Saarrthi days, and his experience of working in Star Plus's prime-time show, Meri Awaaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni. And surprise surprise! Karan even spilled the beans on his relationship with fellow actress, Kavita Kaushik, whom we can rightly call the love of his life!

A pukka Mumbai lad, Karan is a chemical engineer, who went on to do his event management. He then worked with Omung Kumar's event management company for about a year. "I did all possible events during that period, including awards ceremonies and beauty pageants. It's funny how I've even worked on a television awards ceremony. I worked backstage, putting up the stage and the tables. For me, at that time, an awards ceremony was a major client. And today, I'm a part of Star," he says nostalgically.

What followed was the Gladrags Manhunt, where he was adjudged one of the top ten finalists. Soon after, he participated in the Grasim Mr India pageant, where again, he reached the top ten. "I got a call from Zee Music to be a VJ. I took that up and hosted shows for about two years. But somewhere or the other, I knew I wanted to be an actor. So I always kept meeting people, went for auditions, distributed my pictures to production houses, the works. I was always attracted to the performing arts. That's why during four years of engineering, I did all sorts of events, fashion and stage shows, and participated in personality contests. As far as my marks were concerned, I always had the least," he adds cheekily.

The struggle to establish a career in television continued with episodics and along the way, Karan found a very good friend in the form of Neha Devi Singh, who went on to play his heroine, Bhumika, in Saarrthi. "She called me one day to a coffee shop and asked me what I was doing the next day. I said nothing. That's when she asked me to go meet the makers of Saarrthi, who were casting for the show. I went for the audition with long hair and a beard, with the aim of being cast as the villain. I wanted to be the negative lead. They asked me to go home, shave, cut my hair and come back the next day. I went back later, and was cast as Arjun."

Saarrthi has turned out to be one of Star Plus's most successful shows, and Karan is indeed, very proud to have been a part of it. "I've done about 520 episodes, where I've been alive and kicking in every episode. There's not a single episode, which doesn't have me. I've so learnt so much from that show; it was a great unit to work with. My heart cried when I told them that I wouldn't be able to continue. But professionally and personally, I felt it was time to move on."

Prior to Karan leaving the show, his leading lady Neha had also decided that she was done with Saarrthi. Similarly, Karan is not continuing with the show anymore and his character has been accordingly killed. Is there a chance of a comeback there? "Neha left in January, mainly because she was absolutely fatigued. She had been continuously working for four years, every day, 30 days a month. It was talking a toll on her health. So she spoke to the producers, who were very understanding and let her go.

Later in the story, if she needs to be brought back, that possibility is always open. As for me, I don't think the producer will have a problem if I tell him that I want to come back. But as an actor, I don't think I would want to go back. After playing Arjun in more than 500 episodes, I don't think there is anything more left for me to contribute. Now I feel the need to grow, to do something else and work with new people. Exactly why I took up Raj in Meri Awaaz…. He's the complete opposite of Arjun."

There's a palpable excitement in Karan's voice as he talks about his new show, which has him completely engrossed. "Meri Awaaz… has been a mind-blowing experience. With all the stress we work with, telecast hassles, dates issues and overwork, it's still a great unit to work with. The show is doing decently well. It has replaced Kaun Banega Crorepati, so I can't say it's on the same level. But it's not bad either. It has a different flavour to it; it's not your usual saas-bahu show. We do not have a spread-out family with property issues, illegitimate sons or daughters. It's just a simple love story of Raj and Sudha (played by Ashima Bhalla). How they fulfil their dreams in life and at what cost – that's the story."

Meri Awaaz…is notably the only non-Balaji show in the evening time-slot on Star Plus. Karan sure is in illustrious company, and he's not worried about any sort of competition. "We might be the only non-Balaji show but that doesn't affect me. I would feel the competition from some 9 pm Balaji show on another channel. Why should my competitor be some other time slot? Of course, the other 9 pm shows are doing well, so there is competition. But I feel it's good to have strong competition; you get pepped up to do better."

And what about working with Balaji? "Well, I've never received any offers from them," he states honestly. "I've never even been approached by them. What they make is what I've been doing since about two-and-a-half years in Saarrthi. But I have also seen Balaji try and make something different with Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi for MTV. So it's not that they don't experiment. They have good concepts. But they purely cater to the market. They make what sells and that's what is good about them. Everybody is part of the commercial game, and as an actor, I have to see the role offered to me. I don't have to see how the production house deals. If my character is etched well, I don't see why I shouldn't be working with them ahead."

Karan is among the few actors who don't see the incredulity in going in for generation leaps, which are pretty much the flavour of the season. "I'm okay with them. I just have one request. They should seem genuine. We shouldn't be taking leaps with one streak of white hair in our heads. If I'm asked to play a 40-year-old man on Meri Awaaz… I would take it up, and I would play it like one too. You have to look and behave old, cough, maybe walk with a stick. That does not reduce your acting prowess in any which way. If they give me something like that to do tomorrow, I'll do it this way," he says convincingly.

So what kind of work is he looking forward to doing? "I would love to host a game show, maybe something like Saanp Seedi. Or like Khulja Sim Sim, which caters to the audience directly. I keep looking for some action stuff on television. But we really don't have much choice now, do we?" he questions.

Action brings to mind Karan's girlfriend Kavita Kaushik, who has a bit of an action oriented role in her comedy show FIR, where she plays a police officer. "I've been seeing Kavita since about one-and-a-half year precisely," he says, unpredictably ready to volunteer information on their relationship. "We started seeing each other in December 2005 and our relationship is going great. Kavita is one of the most loving, understanding and enterprising women I've met. She knows the art so well. To have a girlfriend who's such a good actor is like a blessing. When I go back home and see my performance, it helps that she always has suggestions for me to improve. I know that I'm getting this advice from a source that is experienced and knowledgeable. It's a boon to have such a girlfriend."

Karan and Kavita's first meeting is quite the romantic tale. They met at a Christmas party, which Karan hadn't even planned to attend. Fate, of course, had other plans. "It was at a suburban lounge. We were introduced by a friend. My cousin had actually called me for the party, and I'd told him I wouldn't be able to come since I was shooting. He told me to drop in for at least five minutes. Aur paanch minute mein meri zindagi badal gayi," he says, uncharacteristically filmi.

Karan vouches for Kavita's die-hard romantic nature. And it might seem a little strange, but in this relationship, it's the woman who plans all the romantic dinners and other surprises. "22nd June was my birthday. And every day from the 1st of the month, I got lovely gifts. Every day, Kavita would send me a gift from a different source. One day it was my driver giving me the gift, the next day one of my co-stars or my make-up guy. She couldn't give them to me directly because of my erratic shooting timings. I really can't expect her to be up all the time. But she's so sweet to think up and plan all this."

The one big problem, which plagues television actors, perhaps even the married ones, is the absolute lack of time to spend with one another. Karan and Kavita somehow work out some quality time from their erratic schedules. "We can't meet everyday, maybe alternate days, or once in three days. That's the repercussions of having a boyfriend, who works 30 days a month. Kavita is not the kind of person, who'll work continuously. She works about 15-16 days a month. That's the way it should be actually, but I'm a workaholic. I enjoy working even 40 days a month by putting in double shifts."

The most important question I have for Karan is why they've always kept their relationship under wraps. It's surprising considering he's so open when talking about it to Showtime. "Actually, both Kavita and I are like that. We're a little discreet by nature. We're not party people; we believe in doing our work and going back home. If we do party, it's with a close-knit group of friends. Not where the media is going to be. That's why our together pictures don't get printed so much. We'd rather catch a good film or a play, do something creative.

But never was there a conscious decision to keep it quiet. We're just like this. I don't have a problem saying Kavita is my girlfriend or that I've been seeing her since one-and-a-half year. Or even that I'm totally committed to her. We just don't like going out there and making a proclamation about it. We're seeing each other, but that's our business."

And what about marriage? Would that be in the offing? "Eventually definitely. As of now, it's a rare possibility, at least for another four-five years," states Karan. Four-five years is quite a long time, isn't it? "Well, both of us want to focus on work. Kavita is someone who loves to do quality work and she's ready to wait for it. And I have a lot of dreams; I have to make things happen. We'd rather let time decide when we should tie the knot. But yes, it's a committed relationship."

Karan also very sportingly admits that he's always linked with his co-stars, the most recent being Ashima Bhalla. "Being linked with my co-stars is a constant. I've been linked with both Neha and Adita Wahi during Saarrthi. As far as the latest one with Ashima is concerned, all three of us, Ashima, Kavita and I had a good laugh. We were wondering how people come up with such tales, especially the one where Kavita is insecure about Ashima and my 'growing' friendship and keeps a tab on us by visiting our sets regularly. It's funny because Kavita has come to my set only once. That too because she had my car, so she dropped it off with the driver and she gave me food and left. That's the only time she visited the Meri Awaaz…set. As for me, I've hardly ever been to the FIR set. We're really not the kind to go and sit on each other's sets, waiting for each other. So I really don't know where that link-up came from. But Ashima's really sweet.

We get along really well. She was quite worried initially but we told her to chill. It's all part of the job. I guess it's because I'm friendly to women and get along with them that I'm always linked up. Then again, it's the media's job to come up with stuff like this and I don't see somebody else's job affecting my relationship. It's not that weak. Kavita and I are actors, and when we stepped out into the big, bad world of showbiz, we knew people would say and do a lot of stuff. We just have to do our work. It's as simple as that."

With his clear-cut uncomplicated attitude, Karan Grover has his priorities in perfect order. He's one of those who like to keep it simple!

Remember the amiable bhabi of Shahid Kapoor in the recently released flick Vivah by Sooraj.R.Barjatya. A charming smile and a pure reflection of Indian values, it was her friendly well-balanced appearance in the movie that brought Lataa Sabharwal the much awaited recognition. Lifestyle catches up with the actress who has her hands full with offers now. Kick starting her acting career with serials like Aarzoo Hai Tu and Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki that is presently on air on Sahara One, Lataa shares that though acting is her first love she loves to shake her belly too. "I am not a professional dancer but I love to dance", she smiles. Astrology is one of her other interests that excite her. Keeping her busy at present is her role in Ajay Sinha's acclaimed soap 'Ghar Ek Sapna'. Playing the role of Cynthia in the serial, Lataa dons the character of a strong and independent woman. A catholic nurse she falls in love with Dr. Rishabh played by Harsh Chhaya. After the two get secretly married, the story graduates to a level where she has a 5-year-old son and Cynthia is shown as a simple and patient person. On her joining Ajai Sinha she tells that her association with Sinha goes back to the days of the serial 'Astitva', however things started moving only when Sinha called her for the auditions of 'Ghar Ek Sapna'. And, rest as they say is history. Shooting for the serial since December last year, Lataa feels that her stint with the veterans in the tellydom is helping her both learn and improve. " At one time when I was facing a difficulty in delivering certain dialogues that were crucial to the scene, both Harsh and Ajay helped me overcome my nervousness,'' she reminisces.

Lataa swears by the fact that ''Ghar Ek Sapna'' is real, unlike other shows on air. She says, "The viewers will find it easy to relate themselves to the story". "Even the grey characters are not overdone and are justified the way it actually happens in our lives", she adds. "Keep watching the show as with the progress in the storyline the show gets closer to reality,'' she tells. — Dharam Pal

Vinod Singh steps into Bollywood

When he played the 17-year-old Dr Ayushman, he was actually much older than that . And Vinod Singh managed to carve out a separate identity for himself. The youthful Vinod now plays Rohit in the film 'Daughter', of the Natvi Banner, thus setting foot on the big screen. The small screen is his first love, however, and he plays Vicky in Sahara One's 'Ghar Ek Sapna'.

As far as films are concerned, Vinod thinks it is a matter of fate. "I do not believe in differentiating between the small screen and the big screen. The medium is not important, your work is," he stresses. Which is why he has no qualms about doing a bit of theatre as well, and he was seen in the play, 'Black Market'. In fact, he wants some more theatre work because he thinks it is a challenge. "There are no retakes in theatre, and there is no need to look good all the time, unlike films and television. I believe that if one is appreciated for his theater work, then he is the real actor," he adds.

Vinod is very selective about the work he takes up, which is why he has not been seen in too many serials since 'Ayushman'. He does not believe in adding too much work to his profile, just to prove himself. His aim is to entertain the audience. "I am not too attached to money, either," he states, adding, "I need just about enough to live well, and that is all that is necessary." He believes that there is no point haggling over money, since he will not be able to carry it with him when he dies, and therefore it is a waste of time to pressurize self and others.

Vinod has set a record of sorts in the advertising world. He has endorsed various products in 181 ads, over a period of seven years. This is all thanks to his youthful face, obviously. He is almost always seen as the boy next door, trying to woo the girl next door. He is playing Ayub Khan's younger brother in the film, 'Daughter', who inspires his socialite, childless brother and sister-in-law to adopt a 12-year-old girl.

The actor has a lot of respect for the girl-child, and is willing to shoot anyone who treats a girl badly, he confesses. "Girls teach us how to love. As far as I am concerned, there should be more girls everywhere," says the actor, "we should revere the girl and be grateful, for the rest of our life, and beyond." And this is not all just talk. He had supposedly walked out of 'Ayushman' because of his co-actor, Neha Mehta, who had a problem with the director. He dismisses this as media hype, and says that he was tired of working more than 16 hours a day, and anyway, the show went off air after he left. He blames the media for the misunderstanding between Neha and him, adding that the two of them stopped speaking because of the various rumours linking both.

Now that all that unpleasantness is over, Vinod is concentrating on his film career. True to character, he is being choosy about the roles he accepts. And he can afford to be. His commercials get him all the money he needs. He even refused to play Shahid Kapoor's friend in Imtiaz Ali's 'Jab We Met'. He is now going through the various offers in hand, with a sieve, and will take up something that he believes in.

VINOD SINGH - VICKY

In e debuted with the desi version of Doogie Howser MD -Ayushman. Yes, we're talking of 'wonder-kid doctor' Vinod Singh. Sadly, a squabble between him and the show's producer, Cinevistaas led to him being replaced. Singh returned with minor roles in Yeh Meri LIft Hai, CID and celebrity shows like Fame Gurukul and Fear Factor Back to the tube Now he has reason to be upbeat. He will start shooting for Ajai Sinha's Ghar Ek Sapna soon. It's not your usual prem kahani.. "At some point my character will turn negative. That's what makes the role interesting," beams Singh. What's past is past The rift with Cinevistaas has been bridged as well. "They called me recently for a role in a new show," he informs. He regrets what happened during Ayushman. "I've learnt since then that no problem can be solved with a fight. It's better to stay calm and talk things out," admits Singh. Let rumours lie Is he still seeing Neha Mehta, his co-star from Ayushman? He beat up a boy who allegedly misbehaved with her on the sets. Sayantani Ghosh is winning rave reviews for her Naagin act on 'Zee'.

'Sayantani Ghosh'

Reena Roy-n-Sridevi's 'Naagin' magic is being recreated by actress Sayantani Ghosh which are evident from the surge in the TRP ratings of the show.

The actress, who started her career with small roles in 'Kumkum', later bagged the lead in 'Ghar Ek Sapna' and it was then, that Producer Aroona Irani spotted her and casted her for 'Naaginn … Waadon Ki Agni Pariksha'.

Speaking about her role, Sayantani shared, "Some may call it regressive but 'Naaginn…' is a mix of fantasy and reality. My role is performance oriented. Plus, my role involves dancing too. These were the facts I considered before taking up the role". With a benchmark like Sridevi doing the Nagin dance we have to say Sayantani has still a long way to go but yes she is trailing on the right path and hissing the right way too.

Beyond dreams

Bollywood beckons Darshan Dave

The name Darshan Dave may not ring a bell, but his screen name Sujeet definitely will. Yes, the same Bihari son-in-law of Om Shankar in the serial Ghar… Ek Sapna on Sahara Television. With a tint of grey to his otherwise romantic character, Darshan has stolen many hearts. The latest feather in his cap is the Best Actor (Drama) Award at ITA award. Darshan is beaming at the very mention of it, "It's not even 10 months that the show is on air and I already have been nominated three times and even won an award. This despite not being the lead. It feels nice to know that people appreciate your work."

Reached there

And for someone who had initially refused that role, it is something to feel good about. "I was very clear that I wanted to do only lead roles. So when director Ajai Sinha, who is also a good friend, asked me to do this I refused as I didn't want to be sidelined. But he persisted that my role will be as important. Today, I am glad I accepted it, though at times I feel I haven't received my due," explains Darshan.

He may have become a household name with his debut serial, but television is not a new medium for Darshan, who has earlier acted in a tele-film as part of the Rishtey series on Zee TV and has also done several TV ads. "After coming to Mumbai from Jaipur to become an actor, I decided to do a course in film making as I wanted to know what goes behind the scenes. But that worked against me as people didn't give me work as an actor. So I took to film making instead. After sometime Ajai offered me a role in Rishtey – The Boss, after which there was again a dry spell till Ghar…" happened," says the music director and lyricist. "I even composed and arranged music for Rishtey. Coming from a music background, music has always been a part of me. But it is just a hobby. "

Now set to turn a hero with his first Bollywood venture, Kuch Khel Kuch Masti, Darshan plays a RJ from Punjab in this comedy film. "I play a complete fool in this film made by Raj Gandhi and Anand Rai," sums up the actor.

Sayantani to play Nagin!

Sayantani Ghosh (Kakul from Ghar Ek Sapna) will be seen playing the lead in Aroona Irani's Nagin, which will go on air from October 5 on Zee TV.

"The main reason why I took up this show is because it is not a daily soap. I am already playing a typical bahu in Ghar so this will be a good change," says Sayantani.

About the show, Sayantani says, "It is about a girl whose parents are killed, when she is young. While dying her mother takes a promise from her that she will avenge her parents' death. However, when the girl grows up and is married, she realizes that the killers of her parents are from her in-laws' family. It is the story of the girl's dilemma – does she continue with her family duties or look to take revenge."

Is this show is similar to all the movies based on ichadhari Nagin? "Since, the subject is based ichadhari Nagin it has some similarities but it is not the same as the movie Nagin. It has a human touch as well and I am sure that common people can connect to the character I am portraying."

How did you prepare yourself for this role? "I have seen many films based on this subject after signing this show especially for eye expression because when you portray Nagin you have to express your feeling through your eyes. I observed Sridevi's behaviour in Nagina very closely."

On the look front she says, "I am supposed to look younger than my mother and aunty, who are also snakes. We will be wearing blue lenses; my make up will not be dark. All of us will be wearing amrapali costumes."

How scary was it shooting with snakes? "We are mostly using dummy snakes for the show. It was just recently that I shot with an actual snake. Though I did not have to touch them and they are poisonless, it was scary for me. May be after touching them my fear will go away. Sometimes it is quite difficult to shoot, however I love snake dances and in this show I will have many such dance sequence."

Sayantani has worked in Bengali films and Ghar Ek Sapna was her first show. Apart from her, Manav Gohil is playing naag in the show and Ali Hasan the sapera.

Harsh, known to experiment with all types of roles, plays a gay for the first time. It will be completely new from what his fans have seen him doing so far.Harsh Chayya

Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut are playing the female leads in the movie, which will delve behind the scenes of the flourishing fashion industry. Bhandarkar is co-producing it with UTV.

Interestingly, Harsh was not the first choice for the role as he was considered an actor with too serious an image. However, he was keen on the role and made an effort to get it.

'I just told Madhur to watch it for me, it did not matter if he cast me at the end of it,' Harsh said.

Apparently, Harsh bought a wig, clothes that he thought would be appropriate for a certain look, wore make up, plucked his eyebrows in shape and then shot himself on a video camera. He edited the five-minute piece and presented the DVD along with some stills to Bhandarkar. In a couple of days, the role was his!

'I put in an effort to get a certain part and I would sincerely like to thank Madhur for casting me finally.

'There are very few opportunities like this available to an actor in the span of his career. I saw one here and I had to at least try to grab it for my own sake,' he said.
