Chapter :5
Roorkee was a blue town at night. The green from the trees, brown from the soil and ivory from the moon seemed to submit to the dominance of the mesmerising ocean of the night, adorned by the shadows of quiet and peace. As he sat on the rain-washed lonely bench, he wished that the colour of the limitless sky somehow soothed the red fire burning his life. The crumpled paper in his hands dropped to the ground as he rested his head on his palms. It was over. The part of his life where he had felt alive, it was over.
"Are you dead?" The voice which had once been a harp on his nerves now seemed friendlier than his own.
"Hey Parth" Randhir spoke after such a long time that his throat felt like sandpaper "Whats up?"
"Actually the moon, but that's not the matter we should be talking about right?" Parth smiled as he sat with the brooding young lover.
"Please tell me that you have some sane reason to talk? Its an insane time as it is in my life." Randhir glared at the offending piece of paper which lay useless at his feet.
"Apart from a way to make things alright?" Parth knew it would get him some attention and the way Randhir was gaping at him right then almost cracked him up.
"If you're talking about..her..Parth..what the.."
"Randhir, if you have changed into a fish then I don't think the idea will work." The glare that he received in reply stopped Parth's laughter.
"Parth, you better tell me the idea you have. I am desperate." The last three words might have sounded normal from another love-struck guy but Randhir was different. His companion seemed to know this.
"Randhir, how much do you love Sanyukta?"
"More than myself."
"Enough to endanger your love itself?"
There was a pause , filled with doubts, suspicion and pain. And finally it was broken by one word.
"Yes."
Sanyukta could feel the weight slowing her down as she walked back to her room from the library. It was not the mountain-pile of books or the stone-pile of tools in her bag which felt heavy. It was the dead-weight of emotions which drained her. If someone had asked her 24 hours ago how she was feeling, her reply would have come pat : Angry. Now though, she was feeling something different. It was a strange thing to feel, especially she should have still been angry. She felt empty.
"I wish he felt this pain too. Why am I the only one going through hell?! Why am I feeling worthless?! Bloody hell Randhir. I'm done with you! I'm done with this tornado of emotions, I'm done with the irrational hurt and most of all done with your memories!" Sanyukta resolved to solve her problems once and for all. Turning to the dark corridor leading to her room, she walked with renewed energy.
If she had been in her senses, Sanyukta would have noticed the unusual silence in the corridor, the absence of students and most of all the presence of the unwanted person. One moment she was walking alone and the next moment she was pinned to the wall, her heart going into shock at the sudden push. Before she could react to her attack, the worst nightmare of her dreams came true. A rough hand gripped her hair and she saw a pair of lips inching towards hers.
"Sanyukta, you are mine. Only mine. Why do you ignore me? Don't do this to me Sanyukta." his words made no sense until she realised the position she was stuck in. "You?" her whisper had more shock in it than anger. Right in front of her eyes, she saw her friend trying to force himself on her. Her instincts screamed to fight back, to yell or kick him right where it would hurt. Her eyes though filled with unwilledtears, having a mind of their own. It must have been her lucky day as someone pulled the rogue away from her. It was only after a few moments that she noticed who her helper was.
She should have felt relief as Randhir beat the daylights out of Sahil but something else gnawed at her mind. It was stupid and shocking but it grew multi fold when she noticed that Sahil had run away and she was alone with Randhir. Her ex-boyfriend. Who had just seen her almost kissing another guy.
"Are you ok?" the words came naturally to him. It was the first thought which came to his mind. He knew that she hated him but he couldn't stop loving her. Her eyes looked stunned at the concern in his voice. He saw the moment sink into her mind, the morphing from shock to realisation, the attempt at holding on to her nerves, the determination to calm her shivering hands. Wordlessly, he lifted her in his arms, registering her half-hearted attempts at protesting and then silently accepting his care. Entering her room and making her settle down comfortably, Randhir never once asked her any questions. He could feel her eyes fixed on his hands as he covered her with the warm blanket and dimmed the lights. As he turned to leave the room, she saw him pause for a moment and come back to the bed.
He had planned it all well. The speech, the choice he was going to offer and all that Parth had suggested. What Parth didn't know was that he had a Plan B in mind too. Taking the crisp paper out of his pocket, he silently kept it on her bedside, knowing that she was observing him.
She was expecting drama. Something big, something noisy. All she got was that piece of paper on her bedside table and the unusually calm departure of Randhir from her room. As soon as the door closed behind him, she grabbed the paper from the table and opened it.

I am not going to stop calling you that name. In fact I am not going to stop anything. You can stop narrowing your eyes and continue breathing. You know, I thought you stopped being stupid after the whole Dream Team drama but these past couple of days proved me wrong. Sanyukta Aggarwal thinking using her brain? How shocking can that be!
There are a number of reasons why you think you should be angry with me. I wont deny any of them. No use trying, because you aren't going to listen. My stubborn filly that you are! So I'm just going to give you the single reason why I should be angry with YOU.
You know that I didn't cheat on you.
Really Sanu, Vidushi? You believing Vidushi is like Yo-Yo falling in love with Jiggy (delete that image from your mind). You aren't that stupid. You know that I wouldn't even dream of cheating on you, even if you begged me to (not impossible knowing your deviant brain. Three is always better than two hmm?). The real reason you are acting like an immature child instead of my smart girlfriend is because you wanted it to happen. You wanted a reason for me to prove that you meant everything. Even if that meant hurting yourself, creating a scene or endangering our relation. Something in you always knew that we wont break, even if you handled our bond roughly. I am fine with that because now I know the truth. I know that Parth's idea of faking a girlfriend is unnecessary. I know that Vidushi's attempts at showing skin and shoving her tongue down my throat are useless (I had to use a litre of mouthwash. Please ask her to change her lipstick flavour?). I know that you know me. And that you will return. So stop crying and laughing together and get some sleep love. I want to see my Sanu tomorrow morning, alive and not a ghost of the girl I love.

Her hiccups and tears were a paradox to Kaustuki who entered after an hour. She hardly understood why Sanyukta hugged her an danced around the room thanking Sahil and his 'jerk job'. All she knew was that Sanyukta looked happier. And dare she say, in love again.
