Part 8
Raghav went home with a smile. Finally he had taken his revenge. It was his turn to be happy. But somehow, under his smile and the urge to be happy, there was an emptiness engulfing him. His heart pained thinking of the deed he had done.
Once alone in his room, the idea of success left him completely, to be replaced by regret. He couldn't help but think of the girl he had just left crying on the beach. His conscience kept asking him the same question - Did she really deserve this?
Now that the thoughts of revenge had left him, his mind answered in a clear no.
Raghav never bothered to think twice about the issue, never let Kalpi get the chance to come clean. He had always marked Kalpi as the culprit, but was she really that wrong? Was it entirely her fault? No. He had been careless too. He never sensed Pakhi's discomfort, and when he did realise about it, then also he waited for a tomorrow' which was never to come. And what had Kalpi done? Made a sarcastic comment to make Pakhi realise the truth. Was it her fault that her idea backfired? Is it necessary that what Pakhi gathered from her words was the reality? He also knew that Pakhi was nave, still neither did he try to make her understand, nor did he consider her naivety while blaming Kalpi. In reality, he was as responsible, if not more, for Pakhi's death. And now he'd destroyed another life...
And realising everything, he could not leave Kalpi alone in the mess he'd just created... he could not leave his best friend, and his love, alone...
For now he knew the reason for his feelings...now he knew that if there was anyone he'd truly loved and cared about, it was Kalpi.
"So Pakhi really was right...atleast about me"
He immediately left for Kalpi's house, he had to explain and apologise for everything. But again he realised his responsibility when it was too late...
Raghav was informed by Kalpi's mother that she hadn't returned home. His tension increased and he immediately went to her room for some clue, anything...
If she had done something stupid... no, he couldn't let that thought come to him. Kalpi's strong, she's brave, she'll not do any such thing...
Suddenly he saw the corner of a sheet sticking out from under her pillow.
He knew what it was - her diary. She had written in it since childhood, and he was the only confidant who had ever read it. As they grew up, he had stopped writing in his diary and reading hers, as he had a disinterest in both reading and writing. He just used to hear everything from her or read her emotions in her eyes...
But today, only her diary could help him. He first took out the lose sheet sticking out of the diary. It seemed to be a poem. She was never good at poetry' he remembered with a sad chuckle and read it
"I knew your look when I saw you that day
I knew what you said was a lie, but not for my sake
I could feel what you felt and what you wanted to do
And I knew I deserved it...
Not because I led Pakhi to her death, I didn't do that intentionally
Because I expected you to move on
Because I fell hopelessly in love with the man who hated me...
Despite this, believe me when I say
That I never wanted this
I never wanted you to lose Pakhi
I never wanted you to hate me
I never wanted the end of our friendship, neither by hate nor by love
I never wanted to fall for you
And yet it all happened
So I accepted your hate
For my love
And let you be happy
By breaking me
And though it seems you've failed
Let me tell you that you've succeeded
For now I'm alone, loveless and friendless
Since that day when I fell for you and saw hate in your eyes...
So be happy, knowing that you've avenged your love
And punished me for my crime"
As the letter ended, Raghav had tears in his eyes. She had done all that... just for him. She had to suffer so much just because the man she loved hated her. Or atleast thought of hating her, he never was able to.
He had to know everything, he couldn't stand not knowing how much she had known and done. So he read the diary to know everything, every truth and lie she told for his happiness and every tear she shed because of him. The diary told him her side of the story. She had been as depressed about the Pakhi's death as he was, maybe even more as he increased her guilt by not talking to her. She had realised her love for him when she started to think she had lost him forever.
The day they were supposed to meet, she was both happy and sad. Happy, because she would finally see me, talk to me, but sad, too, as she was afraid it might be the last time...
But when she returned, she was more hurt than ever, because in his eyes she had not only seen the pain, but also the anger and accusation for her. His lies made her realise that he was planning something, and then it clicked - revenge. So she had cried, apologised, done anything she could to get the thought of his head, as she knew this would ultimately hurt him more than her. She had understood that he was lying every time he said "I've forgiven you, just forget it..."
So she realised that hurting her will give him happiness. The one thing she had been wrong about...
She knew Prem had a crush on her, not serious enough to break his heart, so she started flirting with him. The day Prem proposed her, she was happier than ever. Finally Raghav would accomplish his mission and be happy. When Raghav saw her with Prem, she was happy inside to see his jealousy, but didn't want to admit it. She couldn't bear to think of it, it would make everything complex for him if he falls for her...
Their talks today had been enough to tell her that it was the day. She could hear it in his voice that he had planned something, and there was an air of finality about it.
God, she knew me so well 'Raghav thought How could I even think of acting around her?'
See how much she did for you, and see what you've done to her, Raghav' he thought remorsefully She sacrificed everything for your happiness, and you blamed her all through for a crime she never committed!'
Now his only penance would be to find Kalpi and make sure that she's safe and happy. He couldn't expect her to be his friend or love anymore. He didn't deserve her. He just wanted her to get a happy life.
