Part 9
Raghav couldn't believe what he was seeing.
She was doing everything at once - talking on phone, shifting some boxes, instructing the other people around - it didn't look like she was least bothered about whatever had happened two months ago.
Raghav smiled at the thought - a smile similar to the one she had given after they met the last time.
Don't rush into it, Raghav, not again' he reminded himself, For all you know, she's better at fooling you than you are at fooling her.' He'll first make sure that she's happy and then only leave.
Funny, isn't it'he thought, I look for her everywhere but don't find her, and now when I reached here accidentally, she's the first known person I find! Really, what is she doing in here in Silvassa?'
Meanwhile, Kalpana was quite oblivious to his presence. For the past months, she had tried all possible means to block him out of her thoughts. She had come to Silvassa after talking to her old friend Preeti, with whom she was now living. She had found a good job in a well-known company and kept herself absorbed in work for the whole day. In the evening and on holidays, she, along with Preeti, indulged in social work - helping in NGOs, visiting orphanages, and such. All through the day she kept a happy faade, and there was no one to see the truth in her eyes. But despite her efforts, she couldn't keep Raghav out of her mind. She was never able to blame Raghav for what he did, so hating him for it was out of the question. Alone at night, she didn't have any distraction, she couldn't run anywhere to block his thoughts. She was worried for him, kept debating whether he was happy, or whether he missed her. She kept telling herself that he hated her, he wouldn't even have bothered to come to her home. But at the back of her mind, the memories of Raghav's concern for her gave her a reason to think that maybe he did care. Maybe his care was hidden beneath his quest for revenge, just as these thoughts are hidden behind the idea of his hatred. Kalpana always pushed these thoughts away as soon as they approached her. She couldn't think of going back, not when she had finally found a peaceful life here. She didn't want to have sky high expectations, she feared that the reality will bring them crashing down. So she tried to stay content with the overall peace in her new life.
But, as her luck would have it, she was in for an unexpected visit. She was at the orphanage, arranging the boxes full of Christmas gifts along with a few other helpers, when Raghav happened to pass by. Hearing her voice, he turned and saw her. He was relieved to finally see her safe, and maybe happy.
After that, Raghav followed her around secretly to find out everything about her. Luckily, it was Preeti who noticed him one day and cornered him.
"Hey you, what the hell are you up to? Why are you following us? Look mister, tell me here and now, or else I'll call the police!"
"I'll surely tell you, I'm just waiting for you to give me a chance to do so."
"What do you think of yourself? You're very smart? Don't try to feed me any nonsense and tell me only what I've asked you to." Preeti was quite short-tempered.
Raghav heaved a sigh, "Well, first tell me, how do you know Kalpi, I mean, Kalpana?"
Preeti was surprised to see that he knew Kalpi, that too well enough to call her by her nickname. She was curious to know about Kalpi's past, the reason for her hidden sadness. So she told him.
"We used to be pen friends back during childhood. She moved here a month ago, so she's been living with me since then. But who're you?"
Raghav explained everything that happened, everything he had done, everything Kalpi had to go through for him. Preeti was struggling hard not to punch him out of his senses by the end of his tale. "And now you're sorry for what you did and have come here, who knows how, just to tell her that, and maybe even expect her to go back to you, right?" Preeti tried hard to give out all her anger through her scepticism.
"No, I can't even think of facing her! I just want to make sure that she's happy."
"If that's why you'd been following her, it's good for you. By the way, how did you find her?"
"Total coincidence. I had already quit trying to find her. I was going to Ahmedabad to my cousin's, but I took a wrong route and ended up here. My car broke down, so I had to spend the night in it. The next morning, I was walking down the road when I passed the orphanage and found her."
"I know the rest of the story; you started following her around, checking if she's happy, blah, blah, blah... Now just get lost, she'll be better off without you."
Saying so, she left, leaving Raghav standing there, hurt and guiltier than ever.
