Thank you all for the support.
And hats off to you women who are working hard to provide. You will not get the credit you deserve because you are not a son, but things will improve one day. I have been lucky to have parents who acknowledge my accomplishments, but they also struggle with the fact that I am a girl with titanium for a back bone because I mouth off against some of their gendered thinking.

I myself have supportive parents and they have let me do things I want to with much indepence but sometimes what really boggles and annoys me is that it's so easy for them (despite being supportive) to fall in the rant or frame of what's " right or not right in my doing" or societally acceptable or unacceptable just coz I am a girl...this is so deeply engraved in the mind that despite all progressive thinking it blurs one's thoughts without reasoning!..just so typical!

Totally agreed Mary...you hit the nail on the head! I can't believe how expensive a doormat Shravan has become...and Oxford degree to allow someone else think for you...and convince you that all the qualities you loved about the girl you have loved forever, are now really bad traits to have in a wife...Nice!! Aise Oxford ke education pe mein thook ti hoon!! I would have expected Shravan to be strong, bold, and defensive of her independence, her spirit to always to do right by those that she loves...but within reason and within her means!!

We are with you SUMO...for there is a SUMO in am many a women like me...who have no patience for being anyone's doormat!!😡

I'll just say that I love you for this post. thank you!
you know indian TV/audience/mentality - is yet to come to terms with a woman hero. hence all the conflicting ideas thrown in to a potboiler and wait to see what sticks around (with the general audience and trp). hence, as you very very rightly said - we have a suman tiwari - who is an entrepreneur in her own right but of course, as a chef - why? because - it gives her that "homely" touch and the much needed magic wand - a journey in to a man's world is through his stomach (oh well). it is also a profession that can and cannot be taken seriously, at whim - tiffin wali hi to hai! you can make her sound accomplished on one hand and down market (canteen chalati hai) on the other.

she is shown to be a girl who relied ABSOLUTELY on a very intelligent friend called shravan for ALL her homeworks - i wonder how she passed her previous classes? again, this ploy has been used to show the "symbiotic bond" between the two - but of course if in the process her intelligence gets questioned - who cares! after all, she is only good for cooking.

again note: as a chef - she is shown to be apt only for ghar ka khaan type of food - anyone who aspires to be a chef in the real world - looks for expanding their skills - but of course sumo does not. she continues to cook daal and when taken out to a fancy restaurant she chides how all the fancy names of other cuisine are all useless.

she diligently takes care of her family - who does not care much for her though. because - (1) she "knows" how to balance her duties as a dutiful daughter along with her work (2) she is paying off some debt her deceased parents left as inheritance. Yet, at the slightest of miss - she gets vilified, scolded, doubted - because? hey! she's not their own - they are doing her a favor after all. but sumo drags along - admitting to faults that are not hers.

did you guys notice? suman is never shown to have any down time? any friend? she is happy when others are happy. that's about it. again - reinstating the stereotype in a subtle way - a good homely woman is supposed to find happiness in her family's happiness. yup! suman knows what everyone loves to eat - does anyone - particularly shravan know what she loves to eat? he knows what they loved to eat together - like a kulfi, samosa - but i'm talking about a more personalized touch!? i dont think so.

and yet - she has been doubted time and again for being selfish, egotistic - surprisingly by the very educated man who claims to love her to death.

If I were suman - I will start by printing the dictionary on my clothes with highlighted words - just in case.

I am sure it is tiring for CVs to find a balance in sumo's character and its tiring for us to see that too.

Very beautifully written dear. Actually before EK Maiyaa came in Indian TV it had really good stories. During my teenage years I had seen shows like Phir Wohi Talash where the heroine calmly gives the mangalsutra to her husband and tells she wants to go with her lover and the man elegantly accepts her decision understanding the marriage was forced on her. I don't know when we will get a Padma in Indian TV again.
Then there was Samandaar that had beautiful relationship dynamics, Sameer Soni's debut show. Junoon, what a show it was. I had loved it to the core. Udaan, chunouti etc.. were some gem shows in DD
But then EK came and all the novel ideas went for the toss for the mangalsutra clinging, sindoor wearing ( as if the bottle of sindoor is dumped on the leading lady's maang) doormat bahus and dumb son's
As a working woman who had toiled hard to reach where I am, as a lady who manages her work and family it really hurts when they show woman's place is at home.
I do not have any problem with Suman being a cook, if they can show some real transformation in Shravan. I really want the show to show mutual understanding. Hindi shows don't give dialogues. They just gloss over things at times.

Even I am very lucky to have very supportive parents and family members.
I don't think Shravan wants a doormat girl. He was in love with Sumo. Who could do anything.
He never had any issues with her mother working. We have to wait and watch. He will come around.
But not sure what CV has planned.
Right now he is not realizing the reasons for Sumo behavior and getting confused.
For Sumo taking money from Shravan was not a possibility. After Ramnath blank cheque offer and trying to put a price on her love for Shravan, it was impossible to accept any money from boys side. atleast for her. If Shravan had offered this money to Mamaji and he would have accepted it, she would not have said anything.
Shravan does not know that so he thinks its her ego or self respect. All her actions are for her love..no one can put a price on her love...
