Shravan and the BFF zone

EDKV2 has a habit of taking a long time to build up to a high point but they somehow always manage to nail it when they get to the actual high point😆. I previously felt this with the way they built up to the party episode and then showed the actual dramatic fallout....very well done.

Today, the build up was for the inevitable heartbreak for Shravan as he got BFF-zoned by Sumo😆. We all saw this coming since many days, and the team lived up to the execution once again. Most of the epi was built around Shravan-Sumo scenes and that was another reason why it felt very focused.

The beginning with the "Nazar na lag jaaye" song sequence brought back so many memories of the Night Out epi😆.....that's been one of my fav. epis in their story so I smiled when I heard the song again and then all of Shravan's imaginary romance with Sumo😆......I just knew it would end with Bunty in his arms and lo and behold🤣.....as always, Bunty ki izzat khatre mein😆

Shravan was filled with so much hope and optimism in the morning that one just couldn't help but feel sorry for him that his hopes were going to crash soon. But these scenes were all sweet for the simple interactions.....the little challenge of the race....then the panja scene....for once, Shravan won something in a challenge with Sumo😆.....but aww at his eagerness to hear what she had to say. Bechara was a little too much in his lala zone😆.

I had expected that Sumo will directly address the fact that she knows what he feels but she isn't in that space right now, so she just wants to be friends....but Sumo toh coward nikli😆......she made the whole thing more about just generally wanting him to be her BFF forever and not wanting anything to change between them😆. But Shravan understood even without her saying that she knows about his feelings for her....he could see what she was trying to do and as he always does, he gave in simply because he didn't want to see her upset. There was heartbreak on his face but he still put on a smile and shook hands simply for Sumo's sake.

The bit after that as they are walking back and then Shravan suddenly decides to jump into the water puddle....again such a sweetly executed bit. The juxtaposition of a Shravan who is otherwise heartbroken but still trying to keep up a smile and play the BFF with her....touchingly done. There was a dialogue somewhere in between where Shravan thinks to himself ki Sumo just wants friendship in this relationship and as for him, he will find a way to manaao himself again....aww bechara....I felt really bad for him there. And amazed that once again at his resilience to want to keep going with a smile even after heartbreak.

Sumo's POV actually needs some more clarity, which I hope the writers would provide in the coming days. She found out Shravan likes her and she instantly friend-zoned him....the writers didn't feel the need to address the intermediate step of what her own feelings are? 😆....atleast a token statement saying ki she doesn't feel that way about him or something to that effect would have helped things. Here they've jumped directly to showing Sumo vehemently saying she only wants friends or special friends in her life.....and that's fine....but it would be nice if they explained the WHY of it....she hasn't been shown to have any vehement opposition to dating. So did she friend-zone Shravan cuz she doesn't like him in that way or cuz she doesn't want to date at all?

Just as I thought ki now Shravan will resign himself to this friend-zone, BAM comes the precap😆.....so next week Shravan will actually work up the guts to still directly tell her that he's in love with her? I hope it's not a dream sequence....that would be a cop out😆.

Even if they want to continue the one-sided love angle for now, it would really help to put things out in the open....acknowledge the fact that he's in love with her and then I'd like to hear her thoughts on that too - she doesn't need to feel the same way but whatever she feels should be explained a bit better.

I've liked the gradual approach so far.....SS have reached a turning point again, and I hope the writers don't brush this situation under the carpet again - momentum needs to be built from this point vis a vis Sumo's feelings ka evolution.

@ bold : She friend-zoned him because she doesn't like him in that way as for now. Though we know that she has always been denying things whenever kancha does her detective thing with her. She knows what love is (her own explanation about love) but she doesn't have the knowledge about the feelings.

She spoke about the friendship because she herself said she don't want any of them to take decisions which might break it since they are newly made best friends. Hence, them being in relationship might side lined their BFF friendship she has always craved for.

@bold: That's an assumption. Not clear from the execution. We can only speculate since the writers didn't show it clearly.

If it is denial from Sumo's side, then I guess we have to wait for Kancha to point it out as usual. In the last scene, the way Sumo was saying that Shravan wants the same thing she does - which is only to be BFFs shows that she is desperate to feel comfortable about the decision she's made.....what's not really acknowledged is the fact that she kinda made the decision on both hers and Shravan's behalf. The way she asked him, "Tum bhi yehi chahte ho na" kinda didn't leave much room for him to say anything else.

If she had given him the acknowledgement that she knew about his feelings, it would have been a more honest handling of the situation. But the fact that Sumo didn't have the courage to accept that shows that she is deliberately trying to twist it all into a "mutual" decision....when it really wasn't.

They need to show why Sumo so desperately craves a BFF....cuz she's hardly been a lonely girl. Yes, she's mentioned she lost touch with friends cuz of the Army transfers as all Army kids do....but for her to suddenly bring it up only for this scene with Shravan doesn't give a full picture. It kind of makes it seem like she was looking for an excuse for why she needs to friend-zone him, and this one worked out.

It was a lovely episode today but I just feel there is room to do better with Sumo's character going forward.

A few more thoughts after finishing a rewatch:

On one hand, I like that for once, a show is actually organically exploring friendship developing between two people rather than instantly making both of them fall in love at the same time. It adds more meaning to their relationship because it has a sense of exploration to it.

On the other hand, a few things still pinch me.....Sumo's use of "MAIN chahti hoon ki hum dono same cheezein expect karein.....MAIN jaanti thi tum bhi wohi chahte ho jo main chahti hoon".....this is a little too much MAIN from Sumo. I get that she has her own insecurities and denials but even then, this feels like imposition of her own viewpoints on Shravan....an expectation that Shravan fall in line with whatever she wants. If this is truly going to be a friendship, there needs to be an equality.

She put Shravan in a really tight spot by saying things like, "Kya tum mera sapna banoge?" and poor Shravan - he's just so desperate for any sense of regard and connection with her, that he was floored thinking that he could be a dream come true for her....even if that dream is to just be a friend.

Waise worth nothing....what kind of BFFs can't even hold hands, Sumo?😛....why the awkwardness simply cuz he held your hands in the puddle jumping scene?😆

Shravan is already so far gone in love, he is willing to do anything for a smile from her.....today, he even pretty much committed to becoming whatever she wants him to become. Today, she wants him to be BFF so he becomes BFF....tomorrow she will say join the Army, so he will join the Army? LOL will he really so blindly follow anything she tells him? I hope he has more of a spine than that and can take a stand for himself too.

It is one thing to be selfless in love and make an extra effort to put a smile on someone's face....but you shouldn't be doing it at the cost of losing your identity.

Shravan may have put on a smile for Sumo's benefit but clearly he was miserable inside and the wound was festering, which is why he lashed out at Bunty later. This isn't healthy for him either.

Which is why I really hope the precap is not a dream and some things are out in the open rather than doing this whole "I want whatever Sumo says and wants" angle. They can still be BFFs without Sumo imposing her own viewpoints on Shravan's.

*Edit: Kancha was the only person to even ask Sumo, "What about Shravan's feelings"? in the last scene😆.....chalo kisi ne toh puchha.....but why are Shravan's feelings being treated as some kind of object that can easily be pushed aside to fall in line with Sumo's wants? Sumo easily brushed this way saying, "Ab kuch dosti ke beech mein nahin aayega....na feelings, na confusion"😕😆.....does this girl really have such an over-simplified view of human emotions?😆

Waise toh Kancha is such a khurafaat ki dukaan who figured out Shravan ki feelings with a few hints only but she's still not raised the obvious question to Sumo directly ki, "ok, he likes you....do YOU like him?" Atleast get Sumo on the record on this now chaahe answer no hi sahi😆.....previously toh she used to brush it off saying that Shravan would never be interested in her cuz she's not his type.....but what now?

Excellent review. I pretty much agree with everything you said. We do need more clarity on exactly what Suman is thinking. We know so much about shravan because he is such an open character and he tells us as viewers exactly what he is thinking but sumo is a closed box. We really don’t know much about her other than some of the hints of how she reacts in situations. For example her waking up to draw when she is emotionally distressed. The only thing today is that I feel we did get a bit of a hint of why she is so emotionally repressed. Moving constantly in childhood definitely takes adds strain to how a child relates to the emotional world. Almost give you something equivalent of an avoidant attachment disorder even though she had stable parents. So if that were the case then her reluctance to moving into something more and risk losing friendship would actually make sense.

But I actually really liked her clearly spelling out that both people should be expecting the same from the relationship. Personally, that was an issue I had with shravan pursuing love in the guise of friendship. It’s kind of an unfair thing to do because it places a burden on the other person who was going along with things thinking it was friendship.

Definitely agree with you on shravan needing to express his individuality in the relationship. You cannot become something someone else wants. Someone has to like you for who you are. Otherwise it’s not healthy or sustainable. I kind of liked that Suman told him he shouldn’t alter his strengths to suit her. Also I really liked that she chose to have his fave coffee instead of her tea. That can be the start to balance in the relationship.

Overall though, I really liked the episode. Like you said it’s really interesting to explore the relationship through friendship-one sided love which is not usually done in ITV. It adds a lot of depth.

i kinda liked this part because its quite difficult to jubilation and suffering in one episode...normally tv shows drag confessions or feelings for several episodes here in one episode we saw a trigger point for both characters ...now, shravan saw that she has only considered him as a friend and he decided that he'll become what suman wants thereby sealing his feelings in the back of his mind before they get re-triggered in the future episodes whereas suman will start to ponder perhaps as to why shravan is not giving the special attention she subconsciously or consciously liked ...

Bechara was a little too much in his lala zone😆.

i liked this part because he just wanted suman to get to the main point over doing race, drinking coffee, hand wrestling, showing him the photos of his male friends, etc...we also get a short backstory as to why suman felt dejected in terms of losing out on her former male friends in her earlier years with whom she lost contacts & how she didnt want to the same thing to happen with shravan as this friendship was formed on a better level as compared to before from where they went from buddy to best buddies to dost to special dost to Best friends to best friends forever..

There was heartbreak on his face but he still put on a smile and shook hands simply for Sumo's sake.

here, i might sort be mixed because i wonder about how we discussed about the trigger point in a earlier discussion thread...i have a feeling that she's looking from the perspective in the sense that she feels if they get into a relationship, it might cause them to not be on speaking terms with each other hence seeing one side of the relationship, i feel even if they had began dating or something, it is not necessary that they wont speak forever or something like they can still remain good friends...but again, its somewhat reasonable that she might lose out on a good friendship bc shravan tends to get excited very easily as we've been seeing with him that he loves it when she gives him attention but feels dejected when she doesnt so like somewhat innocent or naive..so its better to shatter the mirror now than later ..obv this is start to change suman when she starts to notice the subtle changes in how shravan might start just treating her as a friend but wont do something extra special such as quickly standing up like in the episode where he got insulted by BB and she tried to cajole him or gifting her special dress or accidently admitting that he's been waiting for suman's surprise like in the 18th august episode before kanchan mentioned that there r other ppl in the house too😆..like he'll continue to cajole her and perhaps give her attention if she were to be upset on something but not from a lover's perspective for now...

And amazed that once again at his resilience to want to keep going with a smile even after heartbreak.

i feel for him because any guy wouldve easily assumed by suman's actions that she likes his special attention...he;s truly a hero because he was able to remain happy despite being happy and still saying that he'll become what suman wants out of this relationship thereby for now, he'll put his feelings aside and will still be her 2am friend in need...he said that he wont go anywhere when suman said that she didnt wanna lose out on a good friendship so i think there is some future premonition here and ive noticed that CVs already start dropping hints thru their dialogs whether its a joke or something and then the thing actually happens in the next episode or something😆

So did she friend-zone Shravan cuz she doesn't like him in that way or cuz she doesn't want to date at all?

interesting point...i think when we were discussing about how suman might regret "her tactic" in a previous thread, that might be a possibility in this case in a future episode where she might begin to wonder why she said those things in the first place...like for now, its fine that she said that she only wants friendship with shravan and nothing more but when shravan starts to reduce the special attention he used to give to suman as opposed to kanchan or his other friends this might bring a question in her mind so idk if the CVs have reserved an answer to this question for a future episode or something??😆 who knows i could be wrong here but lets see..she mentioned that even if she were to date someone it would have to be an army person, so today shravan mentioned that he'll become what she wants so idk if there something that could lead to a character development perhaps in shravan's case here...

Just as I thought ki now Shravan will resign himself to this friend-zone, BAM comes the precap😆.....so next week Shravan will actually work up the guts to still directly tell her that he's in love with her? I hope it's not a dream sequence....that would be a cop out😆.

i also hope that this is not a dream but rather an actual scene perhaps like he'll admit that he did have feelings but he might not let his feelings get the better of him so he'll also remain friends with suman...even suman felt somewhat guilty so i feel there might be a short trigger here...

Even if they want to continue the one-sided love angle for now, it would really help to put things out in the open....acknowledge the fact that he's in love with her and then I'd like to hear her thoughts on that too - she doesn't need to feel the same way but whatever she feels should be explained a bit better.

i agree like try to be more frank or something...i wonder about this because today suman mentioned that she only wanted friendship thru indirect hints such as running, drinking coffee, hand wrestling and show photos of her childhood friends....this time, perhaps it could be a more direct conversation or something idk...😆

I've liked the gradual approach so far.....SS have reached a turning point again, and I hope the writers don't brush this situation under the carpet again - momentum needs to be built from this point vis a vis Sumo's feelings ka evolution.

Thanks :) You've posted a lovely review as well :)

Re: Sumo's emotional repression....yes, we did get a little insight into the lack of 'settling' that happens when you're in an Army kid....you're constantly moving from place to place, your set of friends changing every few years. That said, this trait should have been hinted at a little earlier in the story to sort of build up the character rather than only showing it now. I get that she shared this with Shravan since she now feels comfortable with him, trusts him.....but even then, we could have gotten this hint before through other convos of hers with Kancha....which we never did. So it did feel like she only pulled this out now because she wants the friendship on her terms.

There is no problem in pointing out that two people should have clarity about each other's expectations in a relationship/friendship....but the WAY you put forward that idea matters. Rather than stating it as something SHE wants, Sumo could have said that as a general statement....ki ek friendship mein do logon ke same expectations hone chahiye....instead she only framed it as something she wants....'MAIN chahti hoon'....which I feel was slightly problematic. And frankly, I feel the whole thing could have been better handled if she atleast acknowledged what his feelings were....but she kept it so vague....heck, she could have spun up a generic story about what happens when different feelings enter a friendship....but she made the whole thing only about her own need for a BFF. That is what pinched me. She never even once directly asked him what he wants.....all she asked him if he wants to be her BFF. If she truly wants to be his BFF, why is there no interest in wanting to know what he feels and wants, why is it all about what he can give to her as a friend?

Suman is a riddle in many ways.....on one hand, she framed all this as wanting him to be her BFF on her terms....on the other hand, yes, she did things like choosing his fav. coffee instead of her fav tea today....and then yes, telling him to never back down if he feels he's in the right.

I'm hoping that last statement will be some catalyst to make Shravan stick up for himself and state his feelings directly rather than all this pretense of going along with whatever she wants without expressing his truth.

I loved the epi too.....there is just something very sweet and endearing about these two together....whether it was the first scene with the imagination sequence, then later the BFF zone convo or then the puddle jumping.....they are such an endearing duo together....especially when they smile together.

I don't want to get my hopes up....lol but this makes me wish the story actually lives up to the promise of exploring the depth in their relationship through the evolution of this friendship into a deeper love. The title of the show is all about how they are made for each other....but how do two people reach that stage? They aren't instant soulmates.....it would be interesting to see how they grow into that.

THIS. The real question is whether she meant what all said today. Denial is her general state these days....but even then, they haven't shown her explicitly telling Shravan she doesn't like him that way. It was all very vaguely implied....and mostly focused on implying that Shravan's feelings could mess up the friendship, so he needs to lock it away.

Once again very nice analysis...

@ B....very true.....👍🏼guess....that's...the characteristics of this PH....guess...they may want to change the dimension a bit...after all 3 consecutive shows with the similar dimension.......

@ B....feel the same way.....

@ B...very well explained.....

I've liked the gradual approach so far.....SS have reached a turning point again, and I hope the writers don't brush this situation under the carpet again - momentum needs to be built from this point vis a vis Sumo's feelings ka evolution.

@ B...hope that too..
