Chapter 9

It was cold outside but nothing new for me. I was used to this weather. In fact, I loved this weather. I was walking next to Raghu and we were almost at the chemist. "Aunty ko kaunsi dawai chaiye?" I asked. "Woh, yeh wali," he said and handed me a prescription. I went up to the chemist and handed him the prescription and he gave me the medicine. "Yeh lo," I said, handing Raghu the packet. "Thanks," he said. We started on our way back to the Singhania house. "Raghu, Arjun ne tumse kuch kaha kya?" I asked. I was pretty sure that Arjun would have said something to him about what had happened in during the sangeet practice. "Haan, woh usne kaha tha... he told me to stay away from you," he said. "Yeh Arjun bhi na... kuch zayaada hi over protective hain. Tum chinta mat karna. Main usse baat karongi," I said. We smiled at each other and continued on our walk and made it back home.

It was nice going on a walk with. She was really sweet. She was different from most of the other girls that I had met. The sad part was that it came to an end. We went inside and went to our separate rooms after wishing each other good night. I remembered something that Riya told me on the plane. Something about skiing and Gulmarg. Suddenly I thought of something. "Miss. Kaul," I called and she turned around. "Haan?" she said. "Woh main soch raha tha ki kyun na hum sab skiing ke liye chale? Woh kya hain na, hum Kashmir aaye hain aur hum Gulmarg nahi gaye, you know, it would be so sad," I said. "That's an awesome idea. Hum sangeet ke baad zaroor challenge. Tume pata hain, I love skiing. Main sab intezam kar doongi," she said. "Yeah, that would be awesome," I said. "Well good night," she said and went into her room. This was one of the best trips of my life.

"Woh dono kitne cute hain, hain na?" I asked Mach Mach, as we saw Raghu and Antara walk in. "Haan, par hum unhe kyun dekh re hain?" he asked. "Pagal, hume un dono ki love story ko aage bhi toh barani hain," I said. "Par abhi tak toh unhe pyaar nahi hua," he said. "Tum na, bilkul yede ho. Antara theek hi kheti thi. Arre, un dono ke cheron par dikh raha hain ki voh ek doosre se bahut pyaar karte hain. Hume bas unko ehsaas dilana hain," I said. "Oh, acha," he said. "Waise, maine Antara ki Ma se baat ki thi. Unho ne kaha tha ki Antara Mumbai aana chati hain, usse waha par apni parai puri kar ke internship karni," I told him. "Acha, toh hum kya usse apne saath leke jayenge?" he asked. "Main bhi wahi soch rahi thi. Kal main Antara se baat karongi," I told him. "Haan kar lena, par abhi ke liye, main jao? Mujhe bahut neend aa rahi hain," he said. "Haan, tum jao. Good night," I said. I walked closer to where Raghu and Antara were standing. So they were planning on going skiing, acha plan hain, I thought. I looked at them and saw that there was only Raghu left standing there. I remembered that I had asked him to bring my medicine and went up to Raghu. "Sab theek toh hain na beta?" I asked. "Haan mom. Sab theek hain. Yeh lijiye, aap ki dawai," he said and handed me the medicine. "Waise mom, hum soch rahe they ki kyun nahum sab skiing ke liye chale?" he said. "Main toh nahi jaa ri, tum sab bache ho jaana," I said. "Par mom," he said. "Arre, meri koi umar thodi na hain iss sab ki. Aur main tume na to bol nahi rahi. Toh phir problem kya hain? Tum jao na baki sab ke saath," I told him. "Ok mom. Main chalta hoon. Mujhe sojana chayie. Good night," he said. "Good night beta," I said and headed towards my own room.

The next morning...

"Mama, aap please maan jao na, mujhe jaane do, please?" I said on the phone to my mom. "Par beta, tu wahan akeli, mujhe theek nahi lag ra," Ragini replied. "Mama, maine kab kaha ki main akeli jaa rahi hoon? Kitni baar toh bola hain ki Payal, Piya, Ishaan ji, Riya, Raghu aur Arjun bhi to ja rahe hain," I said. I saw Raghu come up to me and asked what I was doing. "Mom ko convince kar rahi hoon," I said. "Kya, Arjun bhi jaa raha hain?" she asked. "Haan Ma, wahi toh main keh rahi hoon, Arjun bhi aa raha hain. For the last time, main akeli nahi jaa rahi hoon," I said. "Agar yeh baat hain, toh theek hain, tum jao, par sambhal ke," she said. "Ma, you're the best! I love you so much! Thank you!!!! Ok abhi mujhe sangeet ki tayaari karni hain. Bye, main aap se baad mein baat karongi," I said and hung up. "Toh finally tumari mom maan gi," he said. "Haan aur kyun nahi maanti? Akhir main sab ki ladli jo hoon!" I said with a huge smile on my face. "Woh toh tum ho hi," he said, whispering. "Kya?" I asked. "Nahi. Kuch nahi. Tume sangeet ki tayaari nahi karni?" he asked. "Arre haan! Main chalti hoon, bye," I said and walked away to see the decorations.

Yedi, I thought. Sab kuch bhul jaati hain. I walked around looking at the decorations and saw Antara telling the worker to come down from the ladder. "Aap neeche aayie. Main karti hoon," she said and started to climb up on to the ladder. Her foot was about to slip as she climbed up. I ran to wear she was and caught her before she could reach the ground. I looked at her and lost myself in her simplicity and beauty.

I could feel my foot about to slip and was about to hit the ground. I braced myself for the hard impact of hitting the ground, but it never came. My eyes were closed but I could tell that I hadn't fallen. I slowly opened to find Raghu's face close to mine, so close that I could feel his breaths.

I was so close to her. She finally opened her eyes and looked at me with a grateful look in her eyes.

My head started to feel light. I closed my eyes and reached for my forehead with my hand. "Miss Kaul," was the last thing I heard, as I turned unconscious.
