They can't!!!!!
It can possibly be interpreted as homosexuality!!!!!!
Now there were LGBT themes in Hinduism but modern viewers won't be able to accept it and there would be protests and what not!!!!!
It is not worth showing all these things and inviting trouble!!!!!

Not several times only two times once to save Lord Shiva and to help the devas after samnudar mahtan.

Google the story don't make comment that you don't know nothing about google the story and
about lord aiaypa and don't rely on dkdm o any real context.

In SB, although there is no Ayyappa, the intro is given as:
Once Lord Shiva was desirous of seeing the Lord's Mohini form, knowing that it bewilders all. So he went to Vaikuntha along with Parvati and ganpret... Vishnu at first denied, but on Mahadev' request he agreed. Parvati and gan pret were offered first row seats and given all refreshments.😛

Vishnu then called Mahadev and said he would change into Mohini now. Shiva agreed. Vishnu then disappeared, and SHiva saw a charming and ravishing woman. His jaw dropped to the ground. He forgot hwo he was and running after her. Parvati raised her eyebrows as she sipped her drink. After a long chase, Vishnu came back to his normal self, and looked at Shiva, panting from chasing him. He burst out laughing. "I warned you," he said. SHiva too burst out laughing, and the ganprets clapped their hands. Parvati finished her refreshments and joined in the laughter...

I have omitted considerable details. And also, this story happens after Samudramanthan.
Mahabharata.. do you mean Mohini and Aravan story? BUt that is mostly in Tamilnadu only...
